Function CAD provides for mixed, hierarchical models of environment, process and function with relationships represented via flows of material, energy and signal. This paper discusses the technical details of the Function CAD software including its two major components: (1) the library, libFCAD, for handling the internal representation of the model and (2) the GUI for user-Based model manipulation and visualization. the application of Function CAD within a computational, function- based conceptual design process is discussed along with the plugin …

Sorting Results Of Automated Concept Generators Based On Design For Manufacture And Assembly, Kerry R. Poppa, Robert B. Stone Jun 2010

Sorting Results Of Automated Concept Generators Based On Design For Manufacture And Assembly, Kerry R. Poppa, Robert B. Stone

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Early in the design process, it is desirable to produce a large number of potential solutions. Completely exploring a problem's solution space is an unreasonable expectation for an unaided designer or design team. Computational tools have emerged to help designers more fully explore possible solutions. These automated concept generators use knowledge from existing designs and the desired functionality of the new product to suggest solutions. Existing automated concept generation methods produce many candidate solutions, but often provide unmanageably large sets of solutions. Techniques are needed to organize the set of concepts into smaller groups, more easily parsed by the human …

A Natural Language To Component Term Methodology: Towards A Form Based Concept Generation Tool, Matt Robert Bohm, Robert B. Stone Jun 2010

A Natural Language To Component Term Methodology: Towards A Form Based Concept Generation Tool, Matt Robert Bohm, Robert B. Stone

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Over the last few decades design researchers have put forward theories and proposed methodologies that increase the chance that a design team will reliably arrive at the optimal solution to a given design problem. Studies, however, bear out that theories and methodologies alone will not guarantee an optimal or even good design solution. Instead, a breadth of knowledge across multiple engineering domains and the time and tools to thoroughly evaluate the design space are as important as any prescriptive design method. This work presents one of the underlying engineering technologies needed to leverage artificial intelligence approaches to thoroughly search the …

Developing A Lean Value Model For Product Development, Salik Yadav, Venkat Allada

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a value quantification model for multistage product development using lean principles. the proposed value model considers four main stages of product development (PD) including conceptual development, systems design, detailed design and prototyping. the model determines an optimal solution for each of the design variables to maximize the value at each of the PD stages. the value at each of the PD stages is formulated as a function of the six factors: (a) importance of customer requirements (b) cost of customer's ownership, (c) parts/service availability, (d) weighted average cost of capital, (e) information evolution and (f) risk reduction. …

Approximation Of Stationary Statistical Properties Of Dissipative Dynamical Systems: Time Discretization, Xiaoming Wang Jun 2010

Approximation Of Stationary Statistical Properties Of Dissipative Dynamical Systems: Time Discretization, Xiaoming Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We consider temporal approximation of stationary statistical properties of dissipative infinite-dimensional dynamical systems. We demonstrate that stationary statistical properties of the time discrete approximations, i.e., numerical scheme, converge to those of the underlying continuous dissipative infinite-dimensional dynamical system under three very natural assumptions as the time step approaches zero. the three conditions that are sufficient for the convergence of the stationary statistical properties are: (1) uniform dissipativity of the scheme in the sense that the union of the global attractors for the numerical approximations is pre-compact in the phase space; (2) convergence of the solutions of the numerical scheme to …

The Anorexigenic And Hypertensive Effects Of Nesfatin-1 Are Reversed By Pretreatment With An Oxytocin Receptor Antagonist, Gina L.C. Yosten, Willis K. Samson Jun 2010

The Anorexigenic And Hypertensive Effects Of Nesfatin-1 Are Reversed By Pretreatment With An Oxytocin Receptor Antagonist, Gina L.C. Yosten, Willis K. Samson

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Nesfatin-1 is an 82-amino acid protein encoded by the nucleobindin2 gene. When injected intracerebroventricularly, nesfatin-1, via a melanocortin 3/4 receptor-dependent mechanism, potently decreased both food and water intakes and elevated mean arterial pressure in a dose-related manner. Because nesfatin-1 colocalized with oxytocin in hypothalamus and because nesfatin-1 had direct depolarizing effects on oxytocin-producing neurons in hypothalamic slice preparations, we hypothesized that the actions of nesfatin-1 required the presence of functional oxytocin receptors. We, therefore, pretreated conscious, unrestrained male rats with the oxytocin receptor antagonist, ornithine vasotocin (OVT), before treatment with nesfatin-1. We found that pretreatment with OVT reversed the effects …

Measurement Of Refractive Index Change Of Optical Fiber Core Induced By Femtosecond Laser Scanning, Y. Han, T. Wei, Hai-Lung Tsai, Hai Xiao

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report a new method to measure the refractive index change in optical fiber core induced by femtosecond (fs) laser exposure. An in-line Fabry-Perot interferometer, serving as the measurement platform, is constructed on a commercial single-mode optical fiber by onestep femtosecond (fs) laser fabrication. A positive refractive index change is observed and measured accurately as the laser pulse energy surpasses the ablation threshold.

Observations Of Temporal Group Delays In Slow-Light Multiple Coupled Photonic Crystal Cavities, S. Kocaman, Xiaodong Yang, J. F. Mcmillan, M. B. Yu, D. L. Kwong, C. W. Wong

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We demonstrate temporal group delays in coherently coupled high- Q multicavity photonic crystals, in an all-optical analog to electromagnetically induced transparency. We report deterministic control of the group delay up to 4x the single cavity lifetime in our room-temperature chip. Supported by three-dimensional numerical simulations and theoretical analyses, our multipump beam approach enables control of the multicavity resonances and intercavity phase, in both single and double transparency peaks. The standing-wave wavelength-scale photon localization allows direct scalability for chip-scale optical pulse trapping and coupled-cavity quantum electrodynamics.

Quantum Inspired Pso For The Optimization Of Simultaneous Recurrent Neural Networks As Mimo Learning Systems, Bipul Luitel, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Training a single simultaneous recurrent neural network (SRN) to learn all outputs of a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system is a difficult problem. a new training algorithm developed from combined concepts of swarm intelligence and quantum principles is presented. the training algorithm is called particle swarm optimization with quantum infusion (PSO-QI). to improve the effectiveness of learning, a two-step learning approach is introduced in the training. the objective of the learning in the first step is to find the optimal set of weights in the SRN considering all output errors. in the second step, the objective is to maximize the learning of …

Influence Of Morphology And Processing On Xps Characterisation Of Sro-Ca-Zno-Sio2 Glass, F. R. Laffir, A. W. Wren, Mark R. Towler

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A study was conducted to demonstrate the influence of morphology and processing on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) characterization SrO-Ca-ZnO-SiO2 glass. The glass formulation being investigated was originally synthesized for developing a novel glass polyalkenoate cement (GPC). High resolution photoelectron spectra of Zn 2p, Ca 2p, Sr 3d, Si 2p, O 1s, and C 1s were recorded for the different forms of glass. It was observed that there was preferential enrichment of Zn2+ with an increase in the proportion of NBO for the investigated BT101 glass. The relative atomic concentration of Zn in BT101 glass was high and resulted …

Comment On "Coincidence Studies Of He Ionized By C⁶⁺, Au²⁴⁺, And Au⁵³⁺", Michael Schulz, Robert Moshammer, Daniel Fischer, Joachim Hermann Ullrich

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In a recent article, McGovern [Phys. Rev. APLRAAN1050-294710.1103/PhysRevA. 81.042704 81, 042704 (2010)] suggested that the normalization of our measured fully differential cross section for ionization of helium by Au53+ needs to be checked. In this comment we confirm that the normalization of the published data is correct. Furthermore, we point out that, for a conclusive comparison between experiment and theory, an accurate inclusion of the experimental resolution using correct experimental parameters in the calculation is important.

Phase Transitions Of The Generalized Contact Process With Two Absorbing States, Man Young Lee, Thomas Vojta Jun 2010

Phase Transitions Of The Generalized Contact Process With Two Absorbing States, Man Young Lee, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the generalized contact process with two absorbing states in one space dimension by means of large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. Treating the creation rate of active sites between inactive domains as an independent parameter leads to a rich phase diagram. In addition to the conventional active and inactive phases we find a parameter region where the simple contact process is inactive, but an infinitesimal creation rate at the boundary between inactive domains is sufficient to take the system into the active phase. Thus, the generalized contact process has two different phase transition lines. The point separating them shares some …

Miniaturized Superconducting Metamaterials For Radio Frequencies, Cihan Kurter, John A. Abrahams, Steven Mark Anlage Jun 2010

Miniaturized Superconducting Metamaterials For Radio Frequencies, Cihan Kurter, John A. Abrahams, Steven Mark Anlage

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have developed a low-loss, ultrasmall radio frequency (rf) metamaterial operating at ~76 MHz. This miniaturized medium is made up of planar spiral elements with diameter as small as ~λ/658 (λ is the free space wavelength), fashioned from Nb thin films on quartz substrates. The transmission data are examined below and above the superconducting transition temperature of Nb for both a single spiral and a one dimensional array. The validity of the design is tested through numerical simulations and good agreement is found. We discuss how superconductors enable such a compact design in the rf with high loaded-quality factor (in …

Counterintuitive Consequence Of Heating In Strongly-Driven Intrinsic Junctions Of Bi₂Sr₂Cacu₂O8+Δ Mesas, Cihan Kurter, Lutfi Ozyuzer, Thomas Proslier, John F. Zasadzinski, David G. Hinks, Kenneth E. Gray

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Anomalously high and sharp peaks in the conductance of intrinsic Josephson junctions in Bi2 Sr2 CaCu2 O 8+δ (Bi2212) mesas have been commonly interpreted as superconducting energy gaps but here we show they are a result of strong self-heating. This conclusion follows directly from a comparison to the equilibrium gap measured by tunneling in single break junctions on equivalent crystals. As the number of junctions in the mesa, N, and thus heating increase, the peak voltages decrease and the peak width abruptly sharpens for N≥12. Clearly these widely variable features vs N cannot all represent the equilibrium …

Synthesis Of Pegylated Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes By A Photoinitiated Graft From Polymerization, Pu Zhang, David B. Henthorn

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A considerable amount of research has been devoted to carbon nanotubes because of their unique electrical, mechanical, optical, and chemical properties. Here, in this report, we introduce a novel, simple ultraviolet initiated "graft from" polymerization method to synthesize PEGylated carbon nanotubes. This grafting procedure significantly enhanced nanotube aqueous dispersibility and long-term stability in solution. Mass of grafted polymer chains was easily modulated by adjusting polymerization reaction time, and nanomaterials containing up to 80% polymer by weight were synthesized. Nanotube morphology was characterized by SEM, TEM before and after the functionalization. in addition, the covalent bonding of polymer chains to the …

Static And Fatigue Bond Characteristics Of Frp Rebars Embedded In Fiber-Reinforced Concrete, Huanzi Wang, Abdeldjelil Belarbi

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A research project was initiated to develop a nonferrous hybrid reinforcement system for concrete bridge decks by using continuous fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) rebars and discrete randomly distributed polypropylene fibers. This hybrid system may eliminate problems related to the corrosion of steel reinforcement while providing requisite strength, stiffness, and desired ductility, which are shortcomings of FRP reinforcing system in plain concrete. This article presents the results of a part of this research program, i.e., the bond behaviors of this hybrid reinforcing system under monotonic and fatigue loading. Test results indicate that the addition of polypropylene fibers does not increase the ultimate …

Forecasting Consumer Satisfaction For Vehicle Ride Using The Mahalanobis-Taguchi Gram-Schmidt Technique, Elizabeth A. Cudney, Kenneth Ragsdell, Kioumars Paryani

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Consumers assess and perceive quality and performance at the vehicle level, but important cost-effective decisions at the sub-system or component level must be made by the producer in order to economically satisfy consumer needs by providing affordable products. Consumers evaluate vehicle attributes such as ride, handling, roominess, braking, and acceleration. These vehicle level attributes are influenced by factors at all levels of the vehicle architecture, and these factors are often correlated. the goal of this research is to efficiently forecast consumer satisfaction measured as a function of available vehicle level performance data. This article presents the application of the Mahalanobis-Taguchi …
