Transient Fluid Flow Phenomena During Continuous Casting: Part Ii-Cast Speed Change, Temperature Fluctuation, And Steel Grade Mixing, Yufeng Wang, Lifeng Zhang
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Many complicated phenomena are associated with transient stages during the continuous casting process, especially inside the casting mold cavity. a deep understanding of the phenomena and optimized control over the process ensure the high-quality product and low costs. This work presents a three-dimensional numerical simulation of transient fluid flow phenomena during steel continuous casting. in the Part II, the process of casting speed change (increase or decrease), temperature fluctuation, and steel grade mixing in a slab mold were investigated. the phenomena, such as flow pattern, inclusion removal fraction, temperature variation, top surface profile, and steel transportation, were addressed to evaluate …

A Simple Model To Calculate Dendrite Growth Rate During Steel Continuous Casting Process, Mujun Long, Lifeng Zhang, Fei Lu
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In the current paper, the relationship between the casting speed and the dendrite growth during steel continuous casting process was studied; and a simple mathematical model to calculate the primary dendrite growth rate according to the casting speed was developed. the model was used to predict the distribution of the dendrite growth rate along width direction and casting direction during a continuous casting process, indicating a dendrite growth rate of 0.1-3.0 mm/s, which is much higher than that in regular ingot casting. the dendrite growth rate fluctuates along casting direction because of the different cooling intensity in each zone of …
Reaction Dynamics In Double Ionization Of Helium By Electron Impact, Marcelo F. Ciappina, Michael Schulz, Tom Kirchner
Reaction Dynamics In Double Ionization Of Helium By Electron Impact, Marcelo F. Ciappina, Michael Schulz, Tom Kirchner
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present theoretical fully differential cross sections (FDCS) for double ionization of helium by 500 eV and 2 keV electron impact. Contributions from various reaction mechanisms to the FDCS were calculated separately and compared to experimental data. Our theoretical methods are based on the first Born approximation. Higher-order effects are incorporated using the Monte Carlo event generator technique. Earlier, we successfully applied this approach to double ionization by ion impact, and in the work reported here it is extended to electron impact. We demonstrate that at 500 eV impact energy, double ionization is dominated by higher-order mechanisms. Even at 2 …

Design Charts For Retaining Walls In Seismic Areas, Yingwei Wu, Shamsher Prakash
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Retaining walls have failed either by sliding away from the backfill or due to combined action of sliding and rocking displacements, during earthquakes. Performance based design of the retaining walls in seismic areas must account for the likely displacements, in addition to calculating the usual factors of safety against failure in bearing, sliding and overturning. a realistic model for estimating dynamic displacement has been developed, which accounts for the combined action of sliding and rocking and takes into consideration, non-linear soil stiffness in sliding, and rocking, geometrical and material damping in sliding, and rocking, and coupling effects. This model was …

Unintrusive measurement of field modulus and moisture content of roadway subgrade and fill materials greatly enhances field control during construction. Establishing a measurement method in a laboratory setting provides an initial assessment of a tool's possible usefulness in the field. an ultrasonic test system was used in this research in order to determine the wave velocities of cylindrical soil specimens in a laboratory setting in support of a Briaud Compactive Device (BCD) research project. the BCD is a non-destructive test method that can quickly determine soil modulus both in the laboratory and the field. Cylindrical soil samples of silt were …

It is evident that the low frequency full wave electromagnetic modelling is necessary for IC packaging analysis. Considering the complexity, it is very difficult to solve the whole problem directly. Even though the domain decomposition method is a legitimate approach for these types of problems, the domain decomposition method based on the equivalence principle has the low frequency breakdown issue. In this paper, we developed a low frequency augmented equivalence principle algorithm (AEPA) with the augmented electric field integral equation (AEFIE) for packaging and IC analysis. On the equivalence surfaces, not only the electric current and the magnetic current, but …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper proposes a frequency-domain detection scheme for single-carrier multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) underwater acoustic (UWA) communication using low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. the new scheme employs turbo equalization technology together with iterative decoding technique, leading to a double-layer turbo detection structure. in the outer-layer turbo equalization, a soft-decision frequency-domain equalizer (FDE) iteratively exchanges soft information with the soft-decision LDPC channel decoder. within each outer-layer iteration, the LDPC decoder performs inner-layer iterative decoding with sum-product algorithm. the new scheme achieves excellent detection performance attributing to the double layers of iterative operation, which has been tested by experimental data measured in two undersea …

Recently Population-Based Incremental Learning (PBIL) algorithm has been applied to a range of problems in engineering with promising results. However, in most of the literature the standard PBIL with fixed learning rate has been used. It has been shown that when applied to dynamic environment as the one encountered in power systems, adaptive learning rate is more appropriate to use. in this paper, Population-Based Incremental Learning (PBIL) algorithm with adaptive learning rate is used to tune the parameters of a power system controller for damping power oscillations in a multi-machine power system. the optimization of controller's parameters has been performed …

The zigzag and offset path have been the two most popular path patterns for tool movement in machining process. Different from the traditional machining processes, the quality of parts produced by the metal deposition process is much more dependent upon the choice of deposition paths. Due to the nature of the metal deposition processes, various tool path patterns not only change the efficiency but also affect the deposition height, a critical quality for metal deposition process. This paper presents the research conducted on calculating zigzag pattern to improve efficiency by minimizing the idle path. the deposition height is highly dependent …

Finite Horizon Markov Control With One-Step Variance Penalties, Abhijit Gosavi
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Variance-penalized Markov decision processes (MDPs) for an infinite time horizon have been studied in the literature for asymptotic and one-step variance; in these models, the objective function is generally the expected long-run reward minus a constant time the variance, where variance is used as a measure of risk. for the finite time horizon, asymptotic variance has been considered in Collins [1], but this model accounts for only a terminal reward, i.e., reward is earned at the end of the time horizon. in this paper, we seek to develop a framework for one-step variance in the finite time horizon in which …

For many evolutionary algorithms a key obstacle to finding the global optima is insufficient solution diversity, causing the algorithm to become mired in a local optimum. Solution diversity can be influenced by algorithm parameters including population size, mutation operator and diversity preservation techniques. This study examines the combined effect of population size, mutation value and the geography imposed by the combinatorial graphs on a set of five standard evolutionary algorithm problems. a tradeoff can be seen between the initial diversity of the population size, introduction of new diversity from mutation, and the preservation of diversity from combinatorial graph. with an …

The primary focus of the healthcare sector has been to provide patients with the best quality of care. Recently, the escalating cost of supplies and the severe competition among healthcare providers has significantly increased the pressure on material managers to operate more cost-efficiently without compromising high patient care standards. While other sectors have experienced success through the deployment of supply chain management practices, the healthcare sector has not seen major improvements in this area; however, in spite of the uniqueness and complexity of the healthcare supply chain, opportunities for improvements are plentiful. This article provides an assessment of material management …

A Reinforcement Learning Approach For Inventory Replenishment In Vendor-Managed Inventory Systems With Consignment Inventory, Zheng Sui, Abhijit Gosavi, Li Lin
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In a Vendor-Managed Inventory (VMI) system, the supplier makes decisions of inventory management for the retailer; the retailer is not responsible for placing orders. There is a dearth of optimization models for replenishment strategies for VMI systems, and the industry relies on well-understood, but simple models, e.g., the newsvendor rule. in this article, we propose a methodology based on reinforcement learning, which is rooted in the Bellman equation, to determine a replenishment policy in a VMI system with consignment inventory. We also propose rules based on the newsvendor rule. Our numerical results show that our approach can outperform the newsvendor. …

It is found from previous studies on the immunity issues of CATV coaxial cables due to contact failure that, when contact resistance is small, the contact distribution and the number of contact points become factors that affect the degradation in immunity of the cables. However, when contact resistance is relatively large, the effects of the contact distribution and the number of contact points are negligible. in this paper, the physics of this phenomenon is further studied. Simulation results, validated by measurement, reveal that the contact distribution and the number of contact points contribute to parasitic inductances that could change the …

During earthquake excitations, reinforced concrete bridge columns can be subjected to a combination of axial load, shear force, flexural moments, and torsional moments. the torsional moment can be much more significant in columns of bridges that are skewed, curved, have unequal spans, or unequal column heights. Combined loading including torsion can result in complex flexural and shear failure of these bridge columns. This paper presents an experimental study on the seismic behavior of square reinforced concrete columns under combined cyclic flexural and torsional moments. the columns in this study were designed with an aspect ratio of six and tested under …

Effect Of Process Parameters On Abnormal Grain Growth During Friction Stir Processing Of A Cast Al Alloy, S. Jana, Rajiv S. Mishra, J. A. Baumann, G. Grant
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The effects of process parameters and friction stir processing (FSP) run configurations on the stability of nugget microstructure at elevated temperatures were evaluated. Cast plates of an Al-7Si-0.6Mg alloy were friction stir processed using a combination of tool rotation rates and tool traverse speeds. All single pass runs showed some extent of abnormal grain growth (AGG), whereas multi-pass runs were more resistant to AGG. Additionally, higher tool rotation rate was found to be beneficial for controlling AGG. These effects were analyzed by comparing the result of this work with other published results and AGG models. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.

Turbo detection for mobile transceivers is proposed for high data-rate single-carrier multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) underwater acoustic (UWA) communications. the proposed detection scheme employs a MIMO Doppler preprocessor and a low-complexity MIMO turbo linear equalizer (LE). the Doppler preprocessor estimates the motion-induced Doppler shift and compensates it via symbol resampling. the preprocessed signal is then detected by the MIMO turbo LE that utilizes soft-decision minimum mean square error (MMSE) linear equalization with maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) channel decoding, thus improving the detection performance iteratively while maintaining low complexity. the proposed turbo detection scheme has been tested by field trial data …
