The Feasibility Of Using Bifidobacteria Bifidum (Atcc 700541) For The Production Of Prebiotic Oligosaccharides, Candice Marie Luehrs

Masters Theses

"Galactooligosaccharides (GOS) are prebiotics that are being used to influence intestinal microbiota towards health promoting, beneficial bacteria like bifidobacteria. Natural sources of GOS are not found in suitable levels to achieve the desired health effects so economically viable commercial production methods are important. Enzymatic conversion of lactose to GOS through transgalactosylation is a preferred method since the starting material is inexpensive and readily available. Enzymes used in batch production are purified from fungal or bacterial sources or remain in whole cells cultured for GOS production. Purified or unbound enzymes are single use whereas enzymes retained within whole cells can potentially …

On Optimizing Traffic Signal Phase Ordering In Road Networks, Jason Barnes, Vamsi Paruchuri, Sriram Chellappan

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Traffic signals are an elementary component of all urban road networks and play a critical role in controlling the flow of vehicles. However, current road transportation systems and traffic signal implementations are very inefficient. the objective of this research is to evaluate optimal phase ordering within a signal cycle to minimize the average waiting delay and thus in turn minimizing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. through extensive simulation analysis, we show that by choosing optimal phase ordering, the stopped delay can be reduced by 40% per car at each signal resulting in a saving of up to 100 …

Preservd - Privacy Ensured Service Discovery In Mobile Peer-To-Peer Networks, Santhosh Muthyapu, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Mark Linderman

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In mobile peer-to-peer networks, proposed service discovery protocols disregard the exposure of the participating peers' privacy details (privileged information). in these methods, the participating peers must provide their identities during the service discovery process to be authorized to utilize services. However, a peer may not be willing to reveal its privileged information until it identifies the service providing peer. So, these peers face a problem; should the service requesting or the service providing peer reveal the identity first. the protocol presented in [12] solves this problem to some extent and discover the services available in the service requester's vicinity in …

A Resource-Efficient Adaptive Caching Scheme For Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks, Dan Hirsch, Sanjay Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In a Mobile Ad-Hoc Network environment, wireless devices have finite resources such as memory, energy and they work within the wireless constraints such as limited bandwidth and unreliable communication. Therefore, storage space, bandwidth, and battery life must be managed effectively in order to extend the usefulness and lifespan of wireless devices and the network. Caching is one of those techniques which reduce the latency and tuning time for mobile devices in the wireless network. We propose a novel scheme that seeks to distribute the storage, bandwidth and energy burden through a resource-efficient adaptive caching scheme for mobile ad-hoc networks. Our …

A Memory Saving Vector Fast Multipole Algorithm For Solving The Augmented Efie, Yang G. Liu, Weng Cho Chew, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An augmented EFIE (A-EFIE)[9], [10] has been proposed to separate the contributions of the vector potential and the scalar potential for avoiding the imbalance at low frequencies. The corresponding low frequency fast multipole algorithm (LFFMA) [11] was also developed for solving the A-EFIE. Instead of the factorization of the scalar Green's function by using scalar addition theorem in the LF-FMA, we adopt the vector addition theorem for the factorization of the dyadic Green's function to realize memory savings. We are to develop a vector fast multipole algorithm for solving the A-EFIE. © 2010 IEEE.

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

During new fiber sensor development experiments, an easy-to-fabricate simple sensing structure with a trench and partially ablated fiber core is fabricated by using an 800 nm 35 fs 1 kHz laser. It is demonstrated that the structure forms a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with the interference between the laser light passing through the air in the trench cavity and that in the remained fiber core. The fringe visibilities are all more than 25 dB. The transmission spectra vary with the femtosecond (fs) laser ablation scanning cycle. The free spectral range (FSR) decreases as the trench length increases. The MZI structure is …

Purification Of Solar Grade Silicon Using Electromagnetic Field, Anping Dong, Lucas N.W. Damoah, Lifeng Zhang, Hui Zhu

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Non-metallic particles and the metallic impurity elements in the solar cell silicon have a strong detrimental effect on the conversion efficiency of the solar cell. Removing these impurities is one of the important tasks for silicon refining. the current paper proposed a new approach to purify silicon - electromagnetic (EM) separation. Since the non-metallic particles and the metallic impurity elements are non- or less conductive while the molten silicon is well conductive, under EM field, the Lorenz force will push the particles to the boundary layer, thus separate these inclusions. in the current study, a high frequency EM field was …

A Novel Phase-Locked-Loop And Its Application In Statcom System, L. Shi, Mariesa L. Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Phase-Locked-Loop (PLL) plays important role in grid connected power electronics system. a good PLL system can detect the grid phase angle and frequency fast and accurately, and additionally it can extract the positive sequence exactly. in real applications, source signal (voltage or current) usually includes harmonic distortion, unbalanced components. Conventional PLL strategy cannot solve the unbalanced and harmonic distortion problems. Different PLL solutions are proposed in literature in recent years. the general considerations for these different approaches are to design positive sequence estimator to eliminate the negative sequence components and use filters to filter out the higher order harmonic distortions. …

Reconciling Motor Performance Indicators From Theoretical Calculations And Laboratory Tests, Himanshu Hirlekar, Badrul H. Chowdhury, Stephen Ruffing

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Quite often because of the complexity in the design of large industrial motors, the theoretical motor parameter calculations do not match actual results from laboratory tests. Thus, it becomes important to predict the amount of discrepancy between the two methods to develop confidence in the motor parameter calculations. This paper discusses the development of multiple artificial neural networks (ANNs) designed to predict the ratios of measured parameters to calculated parameters, given the geometry and construction of the motor. These ratios represent correction factors which can be applied to the values calculated from the theoretical program, which, in this case, is …

Photovoltaic power plants pose some challenges when integrated with the power grid. the PV plants always focus on extracting the maximum power from the arrays. This makes the PV system unavailable for helping in regulating the grid frequency as compared to conventional generators. the objective of this paper is to introduce a pseudo power point tracking which provides frequency regulation functionality to PV systems. This method is fast and helps in creating a reserve which can be utilized for frequency stability. Control technique discussed in this paper allows the control over the amount of active power injected into the grid. …

Evaluation Of Hydraulic Efficiency Of Disinfection Systems Based On Residence Time Distribution Curves, Jordan M. Wilson, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Hydraulic efficiency is a vital component in evaluating the disinfection capability of a contact system. Current practice evaluates these systems based upon the theoretical detention time (TDT) and the rising limb of the residence time distribution (RTD) curve. This evaluation methodology is expected because most systems are built based on TDT under a "black box" approach to disinfection system design. Within recent years, the proliferation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has allowed a more insightful approach to disinfection system design and analysis. Research presented in this study using CFD models and physical tracer studies shows that evaluation methods based upon …

An ontology can be used to represent and organize the objects, properties, events, processes, and relations that embody an area of reality [1]. These knowledge bases may be created manually (by individuals or groups), and/or automatically using software tools, such as those developed for information retrieval and data mining. Recently the National Science Foundation funded a large collaborative development project for the semi-automated construction of an ontology of amphibian anatomy (AmphibAnat [2]). to satisfy the extensive community curation requirements of that project, a generic, Web-Based, multi-user, relational database ontology management system (RDBOM [3]) was constructed, based upon a novel theoretical …

Dihomotopic Deadlock Detection Via Progress Shell Decomposition, David A. Cape, Stephen C. Jackson, Bruce M. Mcmillin Dec 2010

Dihomotopic Deadlock Detection Via Progress Shell Decomposition, David A. Cape, Stephen C. Jackson, Bruce M. Mcmillin

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The classical problem of deadlock detection for concurrent programs has traditionally been accomplished by symbolic methods or by search of a state transition system. This work examines an approach that uses geometric semantics involving the topological notion of dihomotopy to partition the state space into components, followed by search of a reduced state space. Prior work partitioned the state-space inductively. in this work, a decomposition technique motivated by recursion coupled with a search guided by the decomposition is shown to effectively reduce the size of state transition systems. the reduced state space yields asymptotic improvement in overall runtime for verification. …

Supporting Islanded Microgrid Operations In The Presence Of Intermittent Wind Generation, Nikhil K. Ardeshna, Badrul H. Chowdhury

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Although microgrids have the potential to solve several sticky problems that beset the present-day grid, indiscriminate application can cause serious problems. Thorough studies are needed on many aspects to identify the potential problems and to develop effective mitigation techniques. Microgrids can operate in parallel with the main grid or as an isolated system to support customers isolated from the grid. during parallel operations, the microgrid supplies only a fraction of the power demand of the grid. However, in islanded operations, the microgrid must continue to supply 100% of power to the customers. Both types of operations are studied to identify …
