Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The evolution of the short-range structural signature of the Ir 4+ dimer state in CuIr2S4 thiospinel has been studied across the metal-insulator phase transitions as the metallic state is induced by temperature, Cr doping, and x-ray fluence. An atomic pair distribution function (PDF) approach reveals that there are no local dimers that survive into the metallic phase when this is invoked by temperature and doping. The PDF shows Ir4+ dimers when they exist, regardless of whether or not they are long-range ordered. At 100 K, exposure to a 98 keV x-ray beam melts the long-range dimer …

Usually, photons are described by plane waves with a definite 4-momentum. In addition to plane-wave photons, "twisted photons" have recently entered the field of modern laser optics; these are coherent superpositions of plane waves with a defined projection ℏm of the orbital angular momentum onto the propagation axis, where m is an integer. In this Letter, we show that it is possible to produce high-energy twisted photons by Compton backscattering of twisted laser photons off ultrarelativistic electrons. Such photons may be of interest for experiments related to the excitation and disintegration of atoms and nuclei, and for studying the …
Generalized Contact Process With Two Symmetric Absorbing States In Two Dimensions, Man Young Lee, Thomas Vojta
Generalized Contact Process With Two Symmetric Absorbing States In Two Dimensions, Man Young Lee, Thomas Vojta
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We explore the two-dimensional generalized contact process with two absorbing states by means of large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations. In part of the phase diagram, an infinitesimal creation rate of active sites between inactive domains is sufficient to take the system from the inactive phase to the active phase. The system, therefore, displays two different nonequilibrium phase transitions. The critical behavior of the generic transition is compatible with the generalized voter universality class, implying that the symmetry-breaking and absorbing transitions coincide. In contrast, the transition at zero domain-boundary activation rate is not critical.

We present dynamical (e, 2e) measurements for the electron impact ionization of formic acid and tetrahydrofuran molecules performed under similar kinematics. The experiments have been performed in the coplanar asymmetric geometry for a range of momentum transfers, at an incident electron energy of 250 eV and with an ejected electron energy of 10eV. The experimental results are compared with theoretical calculations carried out using the molecular 3-body distorted wave (M3DW) model.

We have used velocity-map imaging to measure the three-dimensional momenta of electrons rescattered from Xe and Ar following the liberation of the electrons from these atoms by 45 fs, 800 nm intense laser pulses. Strong structure in the rescattering region is observed in both angle and energy, and is interpreted in terms of quantitative rescattering (QRS) theory. Momentum images have also been taken with two-color (800 nm + 400 nm) pulses on Xe targets. A strong dependence of the spectra on the relative phase of the two colors is observed in the rescattering region. Interpretation of the phase dependence using …

A Stress-Strain Model For A Two-Phase Ultrafine-Grained Aluminum Alloy, P. S. De, J. Q. Su, R. S. Mishra
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Two-phase ultrafine-grained (UFG) aluminum alloys with different precipitate and low-angle boundary distributions were examined for their monotonic stress-strain behavior. Precipitates in combination with low-angle grain boundaries were found to determine the deformation micro mechanism. It is proposed that thermally activated vacancy movement plays a central role in this regard. the experimental stress-strain curves matched well with the trend predicted by a modified Blum-Zheng model based on vacancy-assisted dislocation annihilation mechanism. © 2010 Acta Materialia Inc. Hollow Hydroxyapatite Microspheres For Controlled Delivery Of Proteins, H. Fu, M. N. Rahaman, D. E. Day
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Hollow hydroxyapatite (HA) microspheres were prepared by reacting solid microspheres of a lithium-calcium-borate glass (106-150 microns) for 2 days in K2HPO4 solution (0.02 M; 37°C) and evaluated as a controlled delivery device for a model protein, bovine serum albumin (BSA). the as-prepared HA microspheres had a hollow core with a diameter equal to 0.6 the external diameter, a surface area of V100 m2/g, and a mesoporous shell wall (pore size of ≈13 nm). after loading the hollow HA microspheres with a solution of BSA, release of the BSA into a medium of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) …

We have studied the relationship between the initial glass composition and the structural changes associated with laser-induced refractive index modification in a series of Er-Yb doped and undoped zinc phosphate glasses. White light microscopy and waveguide experiments are used together with Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy to characterize the structural changes. The correlation between Raman peak shifts and fluorescence from phosphorus-oxygen hole center (POHC) defects indicates that fs-laser writing results in a depolymerization of the phosphate glass network. The results also show that the exact glass composition should be taken into account when fabricating waveguide devices in phosphate glasses, in order …

We report the relationship between the initial glass composition and the resulting microstructural changes after direct femtosecond laser waveguide writing with a 1 kHz repetition rate Ti:sapphire laser system. A zinc polyphosphate glass composition with an oxygen to phosphorus ratio of 3.25 has demonstrated positive refractive index changes induced inside the focal volume of a focusing microscope objective for laser pulse energies that can achieve intensities above the modification threshold. The permanent photo-induced changes can be used for direct fabrication of optical waveguides using single scan writing techniques. Changes to the localized glass network structure that produce positive changes in …

Doubly and triply differential data for single ionization of argon, neon and molecular nitrogen have been measured for positron and electron impact energies of 200, 250, and 500 eV. Ratios of triply to doubly differential ionization yields as functions of the projectile scattering angle and energy loss are compared in order to investigate differences associated with the sign of the projectile charge. for all three systems, systematic differences are observed in the relative contributions of binary interactions. These differences are shown to increase with increasing scattering angle. Nearly identical recoil intensities are found for positron and electron impact ionization of …

We have measured double differential cross sections (DDCS) for proton fragment formation for fixed projectile energy losses as a function of projectile scattering angle in 75 keV p + H2 collisions. An oscillating pattern was observed in the angular dependence of the DDCS with a frequency about twice as large as what we found earlier for nondissociative ionization. Possible origins for this frequency doubling are discussed.
Integrated Reliable And Robust Design, Gowrishankar Ravichandran
Integrated Reliable And Robust Design, Gowrishankar Ravichandran
Masters Theses
"The objective of this research is to develop an integrated design methodology for reliability and robustness. Reliability-based design (RBD) and robust design (RD) are important to obtain optimal design characterized by low probability of failure and minimum performance variations respectively. But performing both RBD and RD in a product design may be conflicting and time consuming. An integrated design model is needed to achieve both reliability and robustness simultaneously. The purpose of this thesis is to integrate reliability and robustness. To achieve this objective, we first study the general relationship between reliability and robustness. Then we perform a numerical study …

"The Missouri University of Science and Technology Subcritical Assembly (S&TSub) was brought back into service and upgraded with a new neutron detection system and internet access. Before the upgrade neutron counting was only possible in one location. Using a movable detection system housed in acrylic tubes measurements can now be taken in any empty fuel location and at any height within the tube, making three dimensional flux mapping a possibility. By connecting the new detection system to a Canberra Lynx Digital Signal Analyzer, remote users can have limited data collecting capabilities. To further enhance the potential of the facility, an …

The design of prestressed concrete members is restricted by the requirement that the extreme compressive fiber stress at midspan be less than 60% of the concrete compressive strength at release of prestressing. the purported purpose of this limit is to provide serviceability performance, but it places unnecessary limits on the capability of the materials. for this research program, six prestressed concrete girders were produced with high-strength, self-consolidating concrete and subjected to elevated compressive fiber stress levels ranging from 65% to 84% of initial concrete compressive strength at release of prestressing. Part 1 of this series analyzed time-dependent prestress losses and …

Reaction rates and reaction probabilities have been quantified on model indoor surfaces for the reaction of ozone with two monoterpenes (Δ3-carene and d-limonene). Molar surface loadings were obtained by performing breakthrough experiments in a plug-flow reactor (PFR) packed with beads of glass, polyvinylchloride or zirconium silicate. Reaction rates and probabilities were determined by equilibrating the PFR with both the terpene and the ozone and measuring the ozone consumption rate. to mimic typical indoor conditions, temperatures of 20, 25, and 30°C were used in both types of experiments along with a relative humidity ranging from 10% to 80%. the molar surface …

Robustness Analysis Of Slow Learning In Iterative Learning Control Systems, John R. Singler, Douglas A. Bristow
Robustness Analysis Of Slow Learning In Iterative Learning Control Systems, John R. Singler, Douglas A. Bristow
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper examines robust stability and robust transient growth in Iterative Learning Control (ILC). It is well known that small perturbations in system dynamics can result in very large transient growth of some ILC systems. Even larger perturbations can result in instability. One ad hoc technique commonly employed to improve robustness is to slow the learning rate by reducing the learning filter gain or lowpass filtering the error signal. Here, pseudospectra analysis is used to analyze the robustness of ILC algorithms with slow learning. It is found that robustness bounds can be increased and transient growth decreased with decreasing learning …

Biomedical images are often referenced for clinical decision support (CDS), educational purposes, and research. The task of automatically finding the images in a scientific article that are most useful for the purpose of determining relevance to a clinical situation is traditionally done using text and is quite challenging. We propose to improve this by associating image features from the entire image and from relevant regions of interest with biomedical concepts described in the figure caption or discussion in the article. However, images used in scientific article figures are often composed of multiple panels where each sub-figure (panel) is referenced in …

This paper presents a novel state and output feedback control law for the tracking control of a class of multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) continuous time nonlinear systems with unknown dynamics and disturbance input. First the state feedback-based control law is designed which consists of the robust integral of a neural network (NN) output plus the sign of the tracking error signal multiplied with an adaptive gain. the two-layer NN learns the system dynamics in an online manner while the NN residual reconstruction errors and the bounded system disturbances are overcome by the error sign signal. Both of the NN output and error …

Stochastic Optimal Control Design For Nonlinear Networked Control System Via Neuro Dynamic Programming Using Input-Output Measurements, Hao Xu, Sarangapani Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Neuro dynamic programming (NDP) techniques for optimal control of nonlinear network control system (NNCS) are not addressed in the literature. Therefore, in this paper, a novel NNCS representation incorporating the unknown system uncertainties and network imperfections is introduced first by using input and output measurements. Then, an online neural network (NN) identifier is introduced to estimate the control coefficient matrix. Subsequently, the critic NN and action NN are employed along with the NN identifier to determine the forward-in-time, time-Based stochastic optimal control of NNCS without using value and policy iterations. Instead, value function and control inputs are updated at every …

Towards Transient Growth Analysis And Design In Iterative Learning Control, Douglas A. Bristow, John R. Singler
Towards Transient Growth Analysis And Design In Iterative Learning Control, Douglas A. Bristow, John R. Singler
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this article the problem of bounding transient growth in iterative learning control (ILC) is examined. While transient growth is not a desirable property, the alternative, robust monotonic convergence, leads to fundamental performance limitations. to circumvent these limitations, this article considers the possibility that some transient growth, if properly limited, is a viable and practical option. Towards this end, this article proposes tools for analysing worst-case transient growth in ILC. the proposed tools are based on pseudospectra analysis, which is extended to apply to ILC of uncertain systems. Two practical problems in norm-optimal ILC weighting parameter design are considered. Using …

The entity-relationship model has long been employed for conceptual modeling of databases. Methodologies and heuristics have been developed, both for effective modeling and for translating entity-relationship models into relational models. One aspect of modeling that is often overlooked in design methodologies is the use of optional versus mandatory participation (i.e., minimum participation) on the development of relational databases. This tutorial complements existing instructional material on database design by analyzing the syntactic implications of minimum participation in binary, unary, and n-ary relationship sets and for the special case where the E-R diagram depicts a database where 3NF is not in BCNF. …

Development Of A Fuel Cell Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle And Vehicle Simulator For Energy Management Assessment, Andrew Meintz
Doctoral Dissertations
"This dissertation offers a description of the development of a fuel cell plug-in hybrid electric vehicle focusing on the propulsion architecture selection, propulsion system control, and high-level energy management. Two energy management techniques have been developed and implemented for real-time control of the vehicle. The first method is a heuristic method that relies on a short-term moving average of the vehicle power requirements. The second method utilizes an affine function of the short-term and long-term moving average vehicle power requirements. The development process of these methods has required the creation of a vehicle simulator capable of estimating the effect of …
