An Augmented Electric Field Integral Equation For Layered Medium Green's Function, Yongpin P. Chen, Lijun Jiang, Zhi Guo Qian, Weng Cho Chew Mar 2011

An Augmented Electric Field Integral Equation For Layered Medium Green's Function, Yongpin P. Chen, Lijun Jiang, Zhi Guo Qian, Weng Cho Chew

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes an augmented electric field integral equation (A-EFIE) for layered medium Green's function. The newly developed matrix-friendly formulation of layered medium Green's function is applied in this method. By separating charge as extra unknown list, and enforcing the current continuity equation, the traditional EFIE can be cast into a generalized saddle-point system. Frequency scaling for the matrix-friendly formulation is analyzed when frequency tends to zero. Rank deficiency and the charge neutrality enforcement of the A-EFIE for layered medium Green's function is discussed in detail. The electrostatic limit of the A-EFIE is also analyzed. Without any topological loop-searching algorithm, …

Deterministic Integrated Tuning Of Multicavity Resonances And Phase For Slow-Light In Coupled Photonic Crystal Cavities, T. Gu, S. Kocaman, Xiaodong Yang, J. F. Mcmillan, M. B. Yu, G.-Q. Lo, D.-L. Kwong, C. W. Wong

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present the integrated chip-scale tuning of multiple photonic crystal cavities. The optimized implementation allows effective and precise tuning of multiple cavity resonances (up to ~1.60 nm/mW) and intercavity phase (~0.038 π/mW) by direct local temperature tuning on suspended silicon nanomembranes. Through designing the serpentine metal electrodes and careful electron-beam alignment to avoid cavity mode overlap, the coupled photonic crystal L3 cavities preserve their high quality factors. The deterministic resonance and phase control enables switching between the all-optical analog of electromagnetically-induced-transparency to flat-top filter lineshapes, with future applications of trapping photons and optoelectronic modulators.

Compton Upconversion Of Twisted Photons: Backscattering Of Particles With Non-Planar Wave Functions, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Valery G. Serbo

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Twisted photons are not plane waves, but superpositions of plane waves with a defined projection hm of the orbital angular momentum onto the propagation axis (m is integer and may attain values m≫ 1). Here, we describe in detail the possibility to produce high-energy twisted photons by backward Compton scattering of twisted laser photons on ultra-relativistic electrons with a Lorentz-factor γ=E/(mec2)≫ 1. When a twisted laser photon with the energy hω~1 eV performs a collision with an electron and scatters backward, the final twisted photon conserves the angular momentum m, but its energy hω' is increased …

Differential Cross Sections For Single Ionization Of H₂ By 75-Kev Proton Impact, Uttam Chowdhury, Michael Schulz, Don H. Madison Mar 2011

Differential Cross Sections For Single Ionization Of H₂ By 75-Kev Proton Impact, Uttam Chowdhury, Michael Schulz, Don H. Madison

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have calculated triply differential cross sections (TDCS) and doubly differential cross sections (DDCS) for single ionization of H2 by 75-keV proton impact using the molecular three-body distorted-wave-eikonal initial-state (M3DW-EIS) approach. Previously published measured DDCS (differential in the projectile scattering angle and integrated over the ejected electron angles) found pronounced structures at relatively large angles that were interpreted as an interference resulting from the two-centered potential of the molecule. Theory treating H2 as atomic H multiplied by a molecular interference factor only predicts the observed structure when assumptions are made about the molecular orientation. Here we apply the …

High-Order-Harmonic Generation Using Gas-Phase H₂O Molecules, Song-Feng Zhao, Cheng Jin, R. R. Lucchese, Anh-Thu Le, C. D. Lin Mar 2011

High-Order-Harmonic Generation Using Gas-Phase H₂O Molecules, Song-Feng Zhao, Cheng Jin, R. R. Lucchese, Anh-Thu Le, C. D. Lin

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate high-order-harmonic generation of isotropically distributed gas-phase H₂O molecules exposed to an intense laser field. The induced dipole of each individual molecule by the laser field is first calculated using the recently developed quantitative rescattering theory. In a thin medium, harmonic spectra generated coherently from all the molecules are then calculated by solving Maxwell's equation of propagation. By using accurate transition dipoles of H₂O, we show that the harmonics in the lower plateau region are quite different from models that employ the simpler strong-field approximation. We also examine the magnitude and phase of the harmonics and their dependence on …

Fuel Cycle Co2-E Targets Of Renewable Hydrogen As A Realistic Transportation Fuel In Australia, Alberto Boretti

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The claim of catastrophic manmade climate change or global warming through anthropogenic CO2 has presently focused the interest on the tailpipe emissions of CO2 per km, with recent legislations obsessively targeting these emissions of CO2 with defectively implemented procedures. with a variety of different propulsion solutions (electric, hybrid electric, hybrid mechanic, conventional) and different fuels (Diesel, Petrol, alternative fossil, alternative renewable) available in the near future, a more comprehensive approach based on the full fuel cycle, and eventually also the full life cycle of the vehicle appear to be necessary. the paper is a contribution to trigger …

Oversampled Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing In Doubly Selective Fading Channels, Jingxian Wu, Yahong Rosa Zheng Mar 2011

Oversampled Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing In Doubly Selective Fading Channels, Jingxian Wu, Yahong Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new oversampled orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OOFDM) scheme is proposed for doubly selective fading environment. the proposed OOFDM scheme employs oversampling in the time domain and linear processing in the frequency domain, both at the receiver without changing the structure of conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmitters. the time-frequency processing enables a two-dimensional Doppler-frequency grid of the fading channel, such that each data symbol is modeled equivalently as being transmitted at multiple subcarriers and various Doppler spreads simultaneously, while retaining the same spectral efficiency as conventional OFDM systems. Optimum combining ensures coherent combining of the data samples spread …

Wireless-sensor networks (WSNs) are networks of autonomous nodes used for monitoring an environment. Developers of WSNs face challenges that arise from communication link failures, memory and computational constraints, and limited energy. Many issues in WSNs are formulated as multidimensional optimization problems and approached through bioinspired techniques. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a simple, effective, and computationally efficient optimization algorithm. It has been applied to address WSN issues such as optimal deployment, node localization, clustering, and data aggregation. This paper outlines issues in WSNs, introduces PSO, and discusses its suitability for WSN applications. It also presents a brief survey of how …

Synthesis Of Latex Based Antibacterial Acrylate Polymer/Nanosilver Via In Situ Miniemulsion Polymerization, Mostafa Yazdi Mamaghani, Malihe Pishvaei, Babak Kaffashi

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Silver nanoparticles were incorporated into poly-{methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate-acrylic acid} using two different approaches. The first approach was based on dispersing the nano silver particles in acrylic latex (previously synthesized by the emulsion polymerization) and the second is the in-situ polymerization of acrylate monomers in the presence of silver nanoparticles by Mini emulsion polymerization. Mini emulsion polymerization can yield a better dispersion of nano silver in the polymeric particles because organic particles can be dispersed directly in the monomer droplets becoming encapsulated upon polymerization. Morphological investigations were performed using SEM and TEM. FTIR and thermal analyses revealed the silver nanoparticles to …

Study Of Emission Turbulence-Radiation Interaction In Hypersonic Boundary Layers, L. (Lian) Duan, M. P. Martín, I. Sohn, D. A. Levin, M. F. Modest

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Direct numerical simulations are conducted to study the effects of emission turbulence-radiation interaction in hypersonic turbulent boundary layers, representative of the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle at peak-heating condition during reentry. A nondimensional governing parameter to measure the significance of emission turbulence-radiation interaction is proposed, and the direct numerical simulation fields with and without emission coupling are used to assess emission turbulence-radiation interaction. Both the uncoupled and coupled results show that there is no sizable interaction between turbulence and emission at the hypersonic environment under investigation. An explanation of why the intensity of emission turbulence-radiation interaction in the hypersonic boundary layer …

The Structural Role Of Titanium In Ca-Sr-Zn-Si/Ti Glasses For Medical Applications, A. W. Wren, F. R. Laffir, A. Kidari, Mark R. Towler

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Glasses for medical applications are used in particulate form or as a cement component. This work was undertaken to determine structural changes in 0.48SiO2-0.36ZnO-0.12CaO-0.04SrO glass when the SiO2 is substituted with 5 mol% increments of TiO2. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) was used to determine the presence of crystallinity. This occurred after additions of 20 mol% TiO2. Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Network connectivity (NC) calculations determined that by increasing the TiO2 content, the Tg and NC reduced (Tg 670 °C to 632 °C, NC 1.83 to -1.14) suggesting that TiO2 acts as …

Search For Gravitational Waves Associated With The August 2006 Timing Glitch Of The Vela Pulsar, J. Abadie, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The physical mechanisms responsible for pulsar timing glitches are thought to excite quasinormal mode oscillations in their parent neutron star that couple to gravitational-wave emission. In August 2006, a timing glitch was observed in the radio emission of PSR B0833-45, the Vela pulsar. At the time of the glitch, the two colocated Hanford gravitational-wave detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave observatory (LIGO) were operational and taking data as part of the fifth LIGO science run (S5). We present the first direct search for the gravitational-wave emission associated with oscillations of the fundamental quadrupole mode excited by a pulsar timing glitch. …

Neutrino Mass Constraint From The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Power Spectrum Of Luminous Red Galaxies And Perturbation Theory, Shun Saito, Masahiro Takada, Atsushi Taruya

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We compare the model power spectrum, computed based on perturbation theory, with the power spectrum of luminous red galaxies (LRG) measured from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 catalog, assuming a flat, cold dark matter-dominated cosmology. The model includes the effects of massive neutrinos, nonlinear matter clustering and nonlinear, scale-dependent galaxy bias in a self-consistent manner. We first test the accuracy of the perturbation theory model by comparing the model predictions with the halo power spectrum in real- and redshift-space, measured from 70 simulation realizations for a cold dark matter model without massive neutrinos. We show that the …

Medium Propagation Effects In High-Order Harmonic Generation Of Ar And N₂, Cheng Jin, Anh-Thu Le, C. D. Lin

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report theoretical calculations of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) by intense infrared lasers in atomic and molecular targets taking into account the macroscopic propagation of both fundamental and harmonic fields. On the examples of Ar and N₂, we demonstrate that these ab initio calculations are capable of accurately reproducing available experimental results with isotropic and aligned target media. We further present detailed analysis of HHG intensity and phase under various experimental conditions, in particular, as the wavelength of the driving laser changes. Most importantly, our results strongly support the factorization of HHG at the macroscopic level into a product of …
