Shake Table Testing Of A Utility-Scale Wind Turbine, Ian Prowell, Chia Ming Uang, Ahmed Elgamal, J. Enrique Luco, Lanhui Guo
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Shake table tests were undertaken on a full-scale wind turbine (65-kW rated power, 22.6-m hub height, and 16-m rotor diameter) using the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation Large High Performance Outdoor Shake Table at the University of California, San Diego. Structural response characteristics and modal parameters are presented for base shaking imparted in two configurations, both parallel (configuration 1) and perpendicular (configuration 2) to the axis of rotation of the rotor. Results are summarized for a series of progressively stronger motions imparted in configuration 1, with analysis identifying damage sources leading to an overall loss in stiffness. Two sources of …
Compressive Sensing For 3d Microwave Imaging Systems, Hamed Kajbaf
Compressive Sensing For 3d Microwave Imaging Systems, Hamed Kajbaf
Doctoral Dissertations
"Compressed sensing (CS) image reconstruction techniques are developed and experimentally implemented for wideband microwave synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging systems with applications to nondestructive testing and evaluation. These techniques significantly reduce the number of spatial measurement points and, consequently, the acquisition time by sampling at a level lower than the Nyquist-Shannon rate. Benefiting from a reduced number of samples, this work successfully implemented two scanning procedures: the nonuniform raster and the optimum path.
Three CS reconstruction approaches are also proposed for the wideband microwave SAR-based imaging systems. The first approach reconstructs a full-set of raw data from undersampled measurements via …
Null Convention Logic Applications Of Asynchronous Design In Nanotechnology And Cryptographic Security, Jun Wu
Doctoral Dissertations
"This dissertation presents two Null Convention Logic (NCL) applications of asynchronous logic circuit design in nanotechnology and cryptographic security. The first application is the Asynchronous Nanowire Reconfigurable Crossbar Architecture (ANRCA); the second one is an asynchronous S-Box design for cryptographic system against Side-Channel Attacks (SCA). The following are the contributions of the first application: 1) Proposed a diode- and resistor-based ANRCA (DR-ANRCA). Three configurable logic block (CLB) structures were designed to efficiently reconfigure a given DR-PGMB as one of the 27 arbitrary NCL threshold gates. A hierarchical architecture was also proposed to implement the higher level logic that requires a …

Numerical Study Of Pressure Fluctuations Due To High-Speed Turbulent Boundary Layers, Lian Duan, Meelan M. Choudhari, Minwei Wu
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are used to examine the pressure fluctuations generated by fully developed turbulence in supersonic turbulent boundary layers with an emphasis on both pressure fluctuations at the wall and the acoustic fluctuations radiated into the freestream. The wall and freestream pressure fields are first analyzed for a zero-pressure gradient boundary layer with Mach 2.5 and Reynolds number based on momentum thickness of approximately 2835. The single and multi-point statistics reported include the wall pressure fluctuation intensities, frequency spectra, space-time correlations, and convection velocities. Single and multi-point statistics of surface pressure fluctuations show good agreement with measured data …
Design Of A Vortex Induced Vibration Based Marine Hydro-Kinetic Energy System, Varun Michael Lobo
Design Of A Vortex Induced Vibration Based Marine Hydro-Kinetic Energy System, Varun Michael Lobo
Masters Theses
"Hydrokinetic energy harvesting based on vortex induced vibration (VIV) of a bluff body is discussed. VIV is defined as the vibration incurred on a bluff body due to an external fluid flowing over it. These vibrations are the results of boundary layer separation from the surface of the body. An optimized VIV generator has been developed, that utilizes a non-contact type linear magnetic device for generation of energy. The cylinder was chosen such that at the mass ratio (m*) was always lower than the critical mass (m*critical= 0.52). The studies were based on two complementary …
Operation Of The Aerodynamic Plasma Actuator At High Altitude, Timothy Glen Nichols
Operation Of The Aerodynamic Plasma Actuator At High Altitude, Timothy Glen Nichols
Masters Theses
"A plasma actuator was operated at altitudes from 0 to 18288 meters to determine the mechanisms leading to decreased force production at low pressures. The actuator was driven with a 5 kHz sine wave and a peak to peak voltage of 13.4 kV at pressures of 760, 429, 321, 226, and 88 Torr. A passive measurement technique called the capacitive V-dot probe was adapted to the actuator in order to resolve the spatiotemporal evolution of the surface potential and electric field on the dielectric surface. At low pressures up to 20 times more plasma is present than at atmospheric conditions. …

Intensity Dependence Of Multiple Orbital Contributions And Shape Resonance In High-Order Harmonic Generation Of Aligned N₂ Molecules, Cheng Jin, Julien B. Bertrand, R. R. Lucchese, H .J. Worner, Paul B. Corkum, D. M. Villeneuve, Anh-Thu Le, C. D. Lin
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We report measurements and theoretical simulations of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in aligned N₂ molecules using a 1200-nm intense laser field when the generating pulse is perpendicular to the aligning one. With increasing laser intensity, the minimum in the HHG spectra first shifts its position and then disappears. Theoretical simulations including the macroscopic propagation effects in the medium reproduce these observations and the disappearance of the minimum is attributed to the additional contribution of HHG from inner orbitals. We also predict that the well-known shape resonance in the photoionization spectra of N₂ should exist in the HHG spectra. It is …
Energy Recovery In Passenger Cars, Alberto A. Boretti
Energy Recovery In Passenger Cars, Alberto A. Boretti
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The turbocharged direct injection stoichiometric spark ignition gasoline engine has less than diesel full load brake engine thermal efficiencies and much larger than diesel penalties in brake engine thermal efficiencies reducing the load. This engine has, however, a much better power density, and therefore may operate at much higher brake mean effective pressure (BMEP) values over driving cycles thus reducing the fuel economy penalty of the vehicle. This engine also has the advantage of the very well developed three-way catalytic (TWC) converter after treatment to meet future emission regulations. Replacement of fossil gasoline with renewable gasoline-like fuels has major advantages. …

Advanced Vehicle Technologies (AVT), a Ballarat Australia based company, has developed the World's first diesel to 100% LPG conversion for heavy haul trucks. There is no diesel required or utilized on the trucks. the engine is converted with minimal changes into a spark ignition engine with equivalent power and torque of the diesel. the patented technology is now deployed in 2 Mercedes Actros trucks. the power output in engine dynamometer testing exceeds that of the diesel (in excess of 370 kW power and 2700 Nm torque). in on-road application the power curve is matched to the diesel specifications to avoid …
Effects Of Riblets On Skin Friction And Heat Transfer In High-Speed Turbulent Boundary Layers, Lian Duan, Meelan M. Choudhari
Effects Of Riblets On Skin Friction And Heat Transfer In High-Speed Turbulent Boundary Layers, Lian Duan, Meelan M. Choudhari
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Direct numerical simulations of spatially developing turbulent boundary layers over riblets are conducted to examine the effects of riblets on skin friction and heat transfer at high speeds. Zero-pressure gradient boundary layers under two flow conditions (Mach 2.5 with Tw/Tr = 1 and Mach 7.2 with Tw/Tr = 0.5) are considered. Simulations are conducted for boundary-layer flows over a clean surface and symmetric V-groove riblets. The DNS results at Mach 2.5 confirm the few existing experimental observations and show that a drag reduction of approximately 7% can be achieved for riblets with proper spacing. The comparisons in turbulence statistics and …

Ensuring Distributed Accountability For Data Sharing In The Cloud, Smitha Sundareswaran, Anna Squicciarini, Dan Lin
Ensuring Distributed Accountability For Data Sharing In The Cloud, Smitha Sundareswaran, Anna Squicciarini, Dan Lin
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Cloud computing enables highly scalable services to be easily consumed over the Internet on an as-needed basis. a major feature of the cloud services is that users' data are usually processed remotely in unknown machines that users do not own or operate. While enjoying the convenience brought by this new emerging technology, users' fears of losing control of their own data (particularly, financial and health data) can become a significant barrier to the wide adoption of cloud services. to address this problem, in this paper, we propose a novel highly decentralized information accountability framework to keep track of the actual …
Control And Operation Of Multiple Distributed Generators In A Microgrid, Shyam Naren Bhaskara
Control And Operation Of Multiple Distributed Generators In A Microgrid, Shyam Naren Bhaskara
Masters Theses
"Small sized synchronous generator based distributed generators (DG) often have low start-up times, and can serve as dispatchable generators in a microgrid environment. The advantage is that it allows the power network to operate in a true smart grid environment. The disadvantage is that such DGs typically tend to have low inertia and the prime movers driving these resources need to be controlled in real time for them to operate effectively in islanded, grid-connected modes and during transition from grid-connected mode to islanded mode and vice versa. When multiple DGs are present in the microgrid, the overall control can become …

Kers Braking For 2014 F1 Cars, Alberto A. Boretti
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Small, high power density turbocharged engines coupled to kinetic energy recovery systems are one of the key areas of development for both passenger and racing cars. in passenger cars, the KERS may reduce the amount of thermal energy needed to reaccelerate the car following a deceleration recovering part of the braking energy. This translates in a first, significant fuel energy saving. Also considering the KERS torque boost increasing the total torque available to accelerate the car, large engines working at very low brake mean effective pressures and efficiencies over driving cycles may also be replaced by small higher power density …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This project focused on the design and production of metallic bipolar plates for use in PEM fuel cells. Different metals were explored and stainless steel was found out to be best suited to our purpose. Following the selection of metal, it was calculated that to produce 0.7 W of power, the bipolar plate should have an active surface of 25cm2. The bipolar plates were designed with different flow field patterns and manufactured. Different flow field patterns that were used were the straight design, serpentine, multiple serpentine, pintype, interdigitated design and other custom designs. These plates were then assembled along with …

Inherent And Model-Form Uncertainty Analysis For Cfd Simulation Of Synthetic Jet Actuators, Daoru Frank Han, Serhat Hosder
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A mixed (aleatory and epistemic) uncertainty quantification (UQ) method was applied to computational uid dynamics (CFD) modeling of a synthetic jet actuator. A test case, (ow over a hump model with synthetic jet actuator control) from the CFDVAL2004 work-shop was selected to apply the Second-Order Probability framework implemented with a stochastic response surface obtained from Quadrature-Based Non-Intrusive Polynomial Chaos (NIPC). Three uncertainty sources were considered: (1) epistemic (model-form) uncertainty in turbulence model, (2) aleatory (inherent) uncertainty in free stream veloc-ity and (3) aleatory uncertainty in actuation frequency. Uncertainties in both long-time averaged and phase averaged quantities were quantified using a …

All-Sky Search For Periodic Gravitational Waves In The Full S5 Ligo Data, J. Abadie, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We report on an all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency band 50-800Hz and with the frequency time derivative in the range of 0 through -6 x 10-9Hz/s. Such a signal could be produced by a nearby spinning and slightly nonaxisymmetric isolated neutron star in our Galaxy. After recent improvements in the search program that yielded a 10x increase in computational efficiency, we have searched in two years of data collected during LIGO's fifth science run and have obtained the most sensitive all-sky upper limits on gravitational-wave strain to date. Near 150Hz our upper limit on …

We studied three-dimensional angular distributions and longitudinal momentum spectra of electrons ejected in transfer plus ionization (TI), i.e., the ejection of one and the capture of a second target electron, for ion-helium collisions. We observe a pronounced structure strongly focused opposite to the projectile beam direction, which we associate with a new correlated TI mechanism proposed recently. This process contributes significantly to the total cross sections over a broad range of perturbations η, even at η as large as 0.5, where uncorrelated TI mechanisms were thought to be dominant.

Cross-section data for electron impact induced ionization of bio-molecules are important for modelling the deposition of energy within a biological medium and for gaining knowledge of electron driven processes at the molecular level. Triply differential cross sections have been measured for the electron impact ionization of the outer valence 7b 2 and 10a 1 orbitals of pyrimidine, using the (e, 2e) technique. The measurements have been performed with coplanar asymmetric kinematics, at an incident electron energy of 250 eV and ejected electron energy of 20 eV, for scattered electron angles of -5°, -10°, and -15°. The ejected electron angular range …

Effective Dielectric Constant Of Two Phase Systems, Vladimir Petrovsky, Piotr Z. Jasinski, Fatih Dogan
Effective Dielectric Constant Of Two Phase Systems, Vladimir Petrovsky, Piotr Z. Jasinski, Fatih Dogan
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Theoretical approaches to electrical characterization of two phase systems are mostly limited to the systems where the individual components exhibit the same type of conductivity (pure dielectric or pure conductive systems). In this article, the brick wall geometry is extended to the mixed conductive systems with percolation. Impedance spectroscopy techniques were used for experimental investigation of slurries. Various metal oxide powders and host liquids were analyzed using a wide range of solids loadings. Comparison of experimental results with theoretical predictions shows good fitting of the experimental data. Parameters (the values of permittivity for both phases and percolation threshold) calculated from …

Cerium-based conversion coatings were deposited on as-cast aluminum alloy 380 substrates by a spontaneous immersion process. In this study, the effects of rinsing temperature prior to immersion in the coating deposition solution were studied with respect to the surface morphology, electrochemical response, and corrosion resistance of the coatings. Panels rinsed at 25 degrees celsius prior to coating had large cracks and holes in the coating. In contrast, panels rinsed at 100 degrees celsius prior to coating had a uniform coating morphology with fewer, smaller cracks. Electrochemical testing revealed that coatings deposited on substrates rinsed at 100 degrees celsius had higher …
