Prediction Of Landslides Using Surface Wave Analysis Incorporating With Gis: A Case Study In Selangor, Malaysia, Zamri Chik, S. M. Taohidul Islam
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Sites Bukit Antarabangsa, Selangor and at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Selangor were investigated using Multichannel Analysis of Surface Wave (MASW) method. Surface wave method is incorporated with Geographic Information System (GIS) to investigate the hazardous zone for landslides that allows online data to obtain near surface soil profiles. Low frequency seismic signals are used to get 2-D tomography profiles of surface soil near landslides. It is possible to identify landslide risks, if geological and geotechnical properties of soil are known. The effects of different man-made factors for landslides are characteristic properties of soil, slope geometry, road construction etc. The results of …

The National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak) is replacing the 1907-era two-track bascule bridge over the Niantic River between East Lyme and Waterford, Connecticut, along the heavily traveled Northeast Corridor. Prestressed concrete sheet pile retaining walls were selected to support the new higher approach embankments along both the east and west approaches to the new bridge. Along the west approach a two-tiered wall design was utilized to support a new recreational walkway elevated above the 100-year storm surge elevation for the Niantic Bay, while at the same time keeping the walkway below the level of the adjoining tracks. The design of …

The total number of river crossings along the five intervening sections of this road is 36.The Niger Delta Sub-region lies at the southern-most portion of Nigeria. Geotechnical investigations along the road profiles showed between 10-18 meters of thick Organic Clays (OH) underlain by 2.50-4.50m thick Silty-clays (OL) along the first three Sections (A,B,&C) of the road. These have saturated densities (γsat) of 10-15.40 kN/m2; PI ~15.00-35.00%; cohesion (c) ≤24.50-68.50kPa, low strength …
Deep Excavation In An Urban Area: A Case Study, Mohammad Sharif Rajabi, Farzin Kalantary
Deep Excavation In An Urban Area: A Case Study, Mohammad Sharif Rajabi, Farzin Kalantary
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Due to regulations requiring provision of car park in the typical multi-story buildings in the urban areas and the high cost of land, deep excavation adjacent to existing structures have become common-place in Iran. Limiting lateral as well as vertical displacement of the adjacent structures has proven to be a major geotechnical challenge especially in the coarse grained alluvium of Tehran where determination of geotechnical parameters is tedious. Often active temporary support methods such as "rigid pad – anchoring" and/or "anchored soldier piles" are used in combination with nailing. However, arriving at the optimum design for such projects for the …

Csx Railroad Bridge Replacements, Matthew D. Breitenbach, Dawn Edgell, Gary F. Goodheart
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This paper will discuss the geotechnical aspects of foundation design, construction support, and the team work necessary to replace and upgrade 14 bridges along an existing, trafficked rail line through Central Illinois. Seven bridges were constructed using previously completed designs and seven bridges were constructed using a multi-disciplinary design-build approach. The geotechnical team provided construction support for the Phase I bridges while concurrently conducting geotechnical investigations and developing design criteria for the Phase II bridges. The project also involved many logistical considerations including minimizing bridge “out of service time” to less than ten hours for the construction of each bridge, …

Sensor Application Of Poly (Ethylene Glycol) Diacrylate Hydrogels Chemically-Anchored On Polymer Surface, Zhan Gao, Chang-Soo Kim, David B. Henthorn
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We demonstrate a device process combining two photo patternable polymers, poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG)-diacrylate-based-hydrogel and epoxy-based photoresist SU-8, to implement an optofluidic bioanalytical platform through a surface anchoring technique. As an exemplary sensor application, optical dissolved oxygen sensors are fabricated and their performance characterized. The PEG-rich hydrogel is used as a matrix material for the immobilization of oxygen-responsive fluorophore, dichlorotris (1, 10-phenanthroline) ruthenium (II) hydrate. This hydrogel is chemically anchored on the surface of negative-tone photoresist, SU-8, through a free radical reaction in which 1-hydroxycyclohexyl phenyl ketone served as the surface bound photo initiator. The sensor exhibits a reversible Stern-Volmer …
Modeling And Verification Of Security Properties For Critical Infrastructure Protection, Ravi Akella, Bruce M. Mcmillin
Modeling And Verification Of Security Properties For Critical Infrastructure Protection, Ravi Akella, Bruce M. Mcmillin
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Recently, studies have revealed new security issues in critical infrastructures, emphasizing the need for verification of security properties. Any mechanism to verify the security of such systems should merge the cyber and physical aspects in a unified way. This paper proposes a novel direction using process algebras to model and verify security properties within a cyber-physical system (CPS). Specifically, we adopt the π-calculus to perform security analysis of a representative CPS, an advanced electric smart grid. We present the verification of an information flow security property, non- deducibility, defined in terms of more discriminating behavioral equivalences available in π-calculus compared …

Visualizing Graph Features For Fast Port Scan Detection, Maggie Cheng, Quanmin Ye, Robert F. Erbacher
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Detection of sophisticated network scans, such as low and slow scans, requires correlation of large amounts of network data over long periods of time. The volume of data obfuscating such scans can be overwhelming and makes computation challenging. Such scans pose network security risks since identifying running services, the goal of executing such scans, is the first step in launching an attack on the scanned host. To detect sophisticated scans, we propose the integration of graph feature extraction techniques with visualization to simultaneously optimize computational complexity and human analyst time. The integrated approach uses graph modeling and preprocessing to make …

Vulnerability Analysis Of A Smart Grid With Monitoring And Control System, Maggie Xiaoyan Cheng, Mariesa Crow, Robert F. Erbacher
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Large scale power outage is typically the consequence of cascading failures propagated through a power system. To mitigate failure propagation, wide area monitoring and control system is introduced. However, as the physical system is tightly coupled with the cyber system, new threats are introduced due to possible cyber-attacks and failures of the communication system. This paper presents a new framework for vulnerability analysis. Under this framework, we can identify the vulnerable components and the critical components of a cyber physical system. Distinct from previous work, our model considers the interaction between the different components of the cyber physical system and …

Absolute cross sections for single- and double-electron loss and single- and multiple-electron capture of 15-1000 keV oxygen projectiles (q = -1, 0, 1, 2) colliding with the methane molecule are presented. The experimental data are used to examine cross-section scaling characteristics for the electron loss of various projectiles. In addition, a modified version of the free-collision model was employed for the calculation of the single- and total-electron-loss cross sections of oxygen projectiles presented in this work. The comparison of the calculated cross sections with the present experimental data shows very good agreement for projectile velocities above 1.0 au. The comparison …

A Wideband Microstrip To Bilateral Slotline Transition Using Constant Impedance Bilateral Slotline And Heart-Shaped Irregular Cavity, Fenghan Lin, Yong Chang Jiao, Yihong Qi
A Wideband Microstrip To Bilateral Slotline Transition Using Constant Impedance Bilateral Slotline And Heart-Shaped Irregular Cavity, Fenghan Lin, Yong Chang Jiao, Yihong Qi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A microstrip to bilateral slot line (BS) transition is proposed in this letter, which contains a 50-Ω constant impedance BS and a heart-shaped slot line cavity. Unlike traditional slot line transitions, the proposed transition does not suffer from matching issues when losses are incurred by multi-section impedance transformers and this transition has a potential to operate from 530 MHz to over 20 GHz if a K-connector is used. This letter will illustrate the discovery of BS with constant impedance first and then its application in design of the 50-Ω BS. The heart-shaped slot line cavity is proposed for bandwidth improvement. …
Modeling Local Via Structures Using Innovative Peec Formulation Based On Cavity Green's Functions With Wave Port Excitation, Hanfeng Wang, Jun Fan
Modeling Local Via Structures Using Innovative Peec Formulation Based On Cavity Green's Functions With Wave Port Excitation, Hanfeng Wang, Jun Fan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Complex via structures such as noncircular antipads are rigorously studied, in the local region close to vias, using an innovative partial-element equivalent-circuit (PEEC) formulation based on the cavity Green's functions. The problem under study is an essential building block that can be used to model complex multilayer structures. With the usage of the cavity Green's functions, the number of unknowns is significantly reduced. Further, nonorthogonal quadrilateral mesh is used to better accommodate the complex shape of the antipads in practical designs. A novel wave port excitation method is proposed, which is new for the PEEC formulations. Singularity extraction in self-element …

Characterization Of Adipose-Derived Stromal/Stem Cells From The Twitcher Mouse Model Of Krabbe Disease, Xiujuan Zhang, Julie A. Semon, Shijia Zhang, Amy L. Strong, Brittni A.. Scruggs, Jeffrey M. Gimble, Bruce A. Bunnell
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
Background: Krabbe disease, also known as globoid cell leukodystrophy, is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disease caused by the genetic deficiency of galactocerebrosidase (GALC), a lysosomal enzyme responsible for the degradation of several glycosphingolipids like psychosine and galactosylceramide. In order to investigate whether GALC deficiency in Krabbe disease affects adipose-derived stromal/stem cell (ASC) properties and if the ASCs could be used as a source of autologous stem cell therapy for patients with Krabbe disease, ASCs isolated from subcutaneous adipose tissue of Twitcher mice (a murine model of Krabbe disease) and their normal wild type littermates were cultured, expanded, and characterized for …

Inadequate sleep has become endemic, which imposes a substantial burden for public health and safety. At present, there are no objective tests to determine if an individual has gone without sleep for an extended period of time. Here we describe a novel approach that takes advantage of the evolutionary conservation of sleep to identify markers of sleep loss. To begin, we demonstrate that IL-6 is increased in rats following chronic total sleep deprivation and in humans following 30 h of waking. Discovery experiments were then conducted on saliva taken from sleep-deprived human subjects to identify candidate markers. Given the relationship …
