Process For The Purification Of Benzphetamine Hydrochloride, Keith Tomazi

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The present invention relates to the economical and separation of benzphetamine hydrochloride and methamphetamine by liquid extraction. An extraction process employing a suitable organic solvent and water at a pH in the range of from about 6 to about 8 provides excellent removal of the methamphetamine by dissolution in the water phase while the benzphetamine dissolves in the organic phase. Simple separation of the two phases results in separation of the two amines.

Introduction. While administration of ex vitro culture-expanded stem cells has been used to study immunosuppressive mechanisms in multiple models of autoimmune diseases, less is known about the uncultured, nonexpanded stromal vascular fraction (SVF)-based therapy. The SVF is composed of a heterogeneous population of cells and has been used clinically to treat acute and chronic diseases, alleviating symptoms in a range of tissues and organs.

Methods. In this study, the ability of human SVF cells was compared with culture-expanded adipose stem cells (ASCs) and bone-derived marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) as a treatment of myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (35-55)-induced experimental autoimmune encephalitis in …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multiple sclerosis (MS), characterized by chronic inflammation, demyelination, and axonal damage, is a complicated neurological disease of the human central nervous system. Recent interest in adipose stromal/stem cell (ASCs) for the treatment of CNS diseases has promoted further investigation in order to identify the most suitable ASCs. To investigate whether MS affects the biologic properties of ASCs and whether autologous ASCs from MS-affected sources could serve as an effective source for stem cell therapy, cells were isolated from subcutaneous inguinal fat pads of mice with established experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a murine model of MS. ASCs from EAE mice and …

A Linear Iteration Algorithm For A Second-Order Energy Stable Scheme For A Thin Film Model Without Slope Selection, Wenbin Chen, Cheng Wang, Xiaoming Wang, Steven M. Wise

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a linear iteration algorithm to implement a second-order energy stable numerical scheme for a model of epitaxial thin film growth without slope selection. the PDE, which is a nonlinear, fourth-order parabolic equation, is the L 2 gradient flow of the energy d x. the energy stability is preserved by a careful choice of the second-order temporal approximation for the nonlinear term, as reported in recent work (Shen et al. in SIAM J Numer Anal 50:105-125, 2012). the resulting scheme is highly nonlinear, and its implementation is non-trivial. in this paper, we propose a linear iteration algorithm to solve …

Electric-Field Induced Ferromagnetic Phase In Paraelectric Antiferromagnets, Maya D. Glinchuk, Eugene A. Eliseev, Yijia Gu, Long-Qing Chen, Venkatraman Gopalan, Anna N. Morozovska

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The phase diagram of a quantum paraelectric antiferromagnet EuTiO33 under an external electric field is calculated using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory. The application of an electric field E in the absence of strain leads to the appearance of a ferromagnetic (FM) phase due to the magnetoelectric (ME) coupling. At an electric field greater than a critical field, Ecr, the antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase disappears for all considered temperatures, and FM becomes the only stable magnetic phase. The calculated value of the critical field is close to the values reported recently by Ryan et al. [Nat. Commun. 4, 1334 (2013)10.1038/ncomms2329] …

Multi-Valued Parabolic Variational Inequalities And Related Variational-Hemivariational Inequalities, Siegfried Carl, Vy Khoi Le

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper we study multi-valued parabolic variational inequalities involving quasilinear parabolic operators, and multi-valued integral terms over the underlying parabolic cylinder as well as over parts of the lateral parabolic boundary, where the multi-valued functions involved are assumed to be upper semicontinuous only. Note, since lower semicontinuous multi-valued functions allow always for a Carathéodory selection, this case can be considered as the trivial case and therefore will be omitted. Our main goal is threefold: First, we provide an analytical framework and an existence theory for the problems under consideration. Unlike in recent publications on multi-valued parabolic variational inequalities, the …

Effects Of Mix Design Parameters And Rheological Properties On Dynamic Stability Of Self-Consolidating Concrete, B. Esmaeilkhanian, Kamal Khayat, A. Yahia, D. Feys Jan 2014

Effects Of Mix Design Parameters And Rheological Properties On Dynamic Stability Of Self-Consolidating Concrete, B. Esmaeilkhanian, Kamal Khayat, A. Yahia, D. Feys

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Stability is a crucial property for successful placement and performance of self-consolidating concrete (SCC). Dynamic stability refers to the segregation resistance of concrete during flow and is not thoroughly described in literature to date. In this research, a newly developed dynamic stability test, the Tilting-box test, was employed to evaluate the effect of different mix design parameters on the dynamic segregation of SCC. Paste volume, water-to-binder ratio (w/b), maximum size of aggregate (MSA), aggregate density, and aggregate grain-size distribution were shown to affect the dynamic stability of SCC, while the coarse aggregate shape did not have a significant influence. The …

Effects Of Interaction Conditions On Internal Network Structure Of Crumb Rubber-Modified Asphalts, Mohyeldin Ragab, Magdy Abdelrahman Jan 2014

Effects Of Interaction Conditions On Internal Network Structure Of Crumb Rubber-Modified Asphalts, Mohyeldin Ragab, Magdy Abdelrahman

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Investigation of the effect of interaction conditions on the development of the internal network structure of crumb rubber-modified asphalt (CRMA) was carried out. Enhancements in the CRMA physical properties, such as stiffness, expressed in the complex modulus (G*), and elasticity, expressed in the phase angle (δ), as a result of the development of three-dimensional (3-D) entangled network structure were achieved. These results came from controlling the interaction conditions of CRMA synthesis to regulate the crumb rubber-modified (CRM) components that were responsible for the formation of the 3-1) entangled network structure. Dissolution tests and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were performed on the …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Dysregulation of the complement system is increasingly recognized as a contributing factor in age-related macular degeneration. Although the complement regulator CD46 is expressed ubiquitously in humans, in mouse it was previously thought to be expressed only on spermatozoa. We detected CD46 mRNA and protein in the posterior ocular segment (neuronal retina, retinal pigment epithelium, and choroid) of wild-type (WT) C57BL/6J mice. Cd46-/- knockout mice exhibited increased levels of the membrane attack complex and of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the retina and choroid. The Cd46 -/- mice were also more susceptible to laser-induced choroidal neovascularization (CNV). In Cd46 …

Secure K-Nearest Neighbor Query Over Encrypted Data In Outsourced Environments, Yousef Elmehdwi, Bharath K. Samanthula, Wei Jiang Jan 2014

Secure K-Nearest Neighbor Query Over Encrypted Data In Outsourced Environments, Yousef Elmehdwi, Bharath K. Samanthula, Wei Jiang

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

For the past decade, query processing on relational data has been studied extensively, and many theoretical and practical solutions to query processing have been proposed under various scenarios. With the recent popularity of cloud computing, users now have the opportunity to outsource their data as well as the data management tasks to the cloud. However, due to the rise of various privacy issues, sensitive data (e.g., medical records) need to be encrypted before outsourcing to the cloud. In addition, query processing tasks should be handled by the cloud; otherwise, there would be no point to outsource the data at the …

Linking Solid Particle Packing Of Eco-Scc To Material Performance, Florian V. Mueller, Olafur H. Wallevik, Kamal Khayat Jan 2014

Linking Solid Particle Packing Of Eco-Scc To Material Performance, Florian V. Mueller, Olafur H. Wallevik, Kamal Khayat

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The concept of Eco-SCC aims to achieve self-compacting concrete (SCC) design for intermediate compressive strength mixtures that are commonly used in the ready-mix concrete industry. Contrary to many other approaches, in which the reactive cement clinker is replaced by a less reactive component, Eco-SCC involves the reduction of the total powder content. In the approach presented in this paper, the lubricant volume is increased by using a non-reactive filler. An improved particle packing with an enhanced lattice effect can minimize the lubricant demand and enhance the stability of the concrete. The effect of particle-size distribution on stability and performance of …

Educating Apostles Of The Homeland: Tourism And "Honismeret" In Interwar Hungary, Andrew Behrendt

History and Political Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Promoters of domestic tourism in Hungary between the world wars laid blame for poor business at the feet of many causes. But their loudest and most persistent accusation was that Hungarians did not travel their homeland because they did not properly “know it.” At the same time, geographers, educators, and politicians made the nearly identical claim that Hungarians were lacking in honismeret, or “knowledge of one’s homeland,” and needed to banish their ignorance if they were to truly and adequately love their country. This article explores one confluence of these two streams. Between 1934 and 1942, metropolitan authorities sponsored an …

Content Distribution In Delay-Tolerant Networks Using Social Context, Roy Cabaniss, Sanjay Madria Jan 2014

Content Distribution In Delay-Tolerant Networks Using Social Context, Roy Cabaniss, Sanjay Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Wireless communication technologies have given rise to the development of Delay Tolerant Networks, a collection of devices that route data opportunistically. These networks can be used to distribute data, such as news articles, advertisements, and media, to interested clients. To deliver content efficiently, the Social Content Distribution (SCD) schema collects social context data and request patterns. Nodes then are designated as mobile repositories, or throw boxes, which house large content stores. Clients request specific articles from nearby repositories. Which nodes will request data can be predicted based on request and social patterns, so the SCD schema can fulfill content requests …

Effects Of Chemical Stabilizers On An Expansive Clay, Honghua Zhao, Louis Ge, Thomas M. Petry, Yi Zhen Sun Jan 2014

Effects Of Chemical Stabilizers On An Expansive Clay, Honghua Zhao, Louis Ge, Thomas M. Petry, Yi Zhen Sun

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Expansive clays exhibit a high potential for the volume change behavior when the soil moisture changes. The estimated annual cost of the damage to the facilities built on expansive clay in the United States exceeds 9 billion dollars. Because of the physicochemical nature of the expansive clay, the use of chemical agents to improve their engineering properties is common. This research investigated the effects of chemical agents on an expansive soil from Texas through a laboratory injection method. The agents used in this study included lime, potassium-based agents, and a group of ionic agents. Swelling tests, chemical tests, and soil …

Qos Aware Geographic Opportunistic Routing In Wireless Sensor Networks, Long Cheng, Jianwei Niu, Jiannong Cao, Sajal K. Das, Yu Gu Jan 2014

Qos Aware Geographic Opportunistic Routing In Wireless Sensor Networks, Long Cheng, Jianwei Niu, Jiannong Cao, Sajal K. Das, Yu Gu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

QoS routing is an important research issue in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), especially for mission-critical monitoring and surveillance systems which requires timely and reliable data delivery. Existing work exploits multipath routing to guarantee both reliability and delay QoS constraints in WSNs. However, the multipath routing approach suffers from a significant energy cost. In this work, we exploit the geographic opportunistic routing (GOR) for QoS provisioning with both end-to-end reliability and delay constraints in WSNs. Existing GOR protocols are not efficient for QoS provisioning in WSNs, in terms of the energy efficiency and computation delay at each hop. To improve the …

State Involvement In Limiting Textbook Choice By School Districts, Michelle Phillips Jan 2014

State Involvement In Limiting Textbook Choice By School Districts, Michelle Phillips

Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Who gets to decide what textbooks are used in America's public-school classrooms varies by state. States can let each school district decide, provide standards that must be followed and make available an incomplete listing of books meeting those standards, or allow schools to choose books only from a list provided by the state. I present a model that provides an explanation for state limits on textbook selection by school districts. I examine the roles played by decision making costs, effectiveness of voters, religious composition, power of teachers, and propensity of state governments to interfere with or to help districts in …

Earnings Management And Corporate Spinoffs, Ying Chou Lin, Kenneth Yung Jan 2014

Earnings Management And Corporate Spinoffs, Ying Chou Lin, Kenneth Yung

Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this study we examine whether firms manage earnings before pursuing corporate spinoffs. Using a sample of 226 completed spinoffs between 1985 and 2005, we find strong evidence of pre-spinoff earnings management among parent firms involved in non-focus-increasing spinoffs. We also find higher levels of earnings management among parent firms that have a higher level of information asymmetry prior to spinoff announcements. Our regression results show a significant negative relation between income-increasing earnings management and the announcement period returns for non-focus-increasing spinoffs. In addition, a significant positive relation is found between income-increasing earnings management and the announcement period returns for …

A Simple Turbulence Model For Stably Stratified Wall-Bounded Flows, F. Karimpour, S. K. Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this study, we present a simple zero-equation (algebraic) turbulence closure scheme as well as the standard k-Ïμ model for stably stratified wall-bounded flows. We do this by proposing a parameterization for the turbulent Prandtl number (Prt) for stably stratified flows under the influence of a smooth solid wall. The turbulent Prandtl number is the linking bridge between the turbulent momentum and scalar fluxes in the context of Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations. Therefore, it is important to use appropriate parameterizations for Prt in order to define the right level of momentum and scalar mixing in stably stratified flows. To date, …

Analysis And Modeling Of Resilience For Networked Systems, Kamlesh Ashok Joshi Jan 2014

Analysis And Modeling Of Resilience For Networked Systems, Kamlesh Ashok Joshi

Masters Theses

"A cyber physical system (CPS) has two main subsystems; a physical infrastructure that is responsible for managing and implementing physical tasks, e.g., generation and distribution of a physical commodity, and a cyber infrastructure that is used to support and enhance these physical operations through computing, communication, and control. Imperfect cyber control can lower the efficacy and even reliability of existing physical infrastructures. As such, justifiable reliance on CPSs requires rigorous investigation of the effect of incorporating cyber infrastructure on functional and non-functional aspects of system performance. One non-functional metric of note is resilience, defined as the ability of a system …

Numerical Analysis Of The Fractional Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation, Kyle Thicke Jan 2014

Numerical Analysis Of The Fractional Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation, Kyle Thicke

Honors Academy

Fractional partial differential equations (PDEs) have found success in recent decades in modeling several different phenomena in science and engineering. Analytic solutions for fractional PDEs are rare, so numerical approximations are often used instead. In the literature, few numerical methods for solving fractional PDEs with Riesz space fractional derivatives have been proposed. In particular, we are aware of no energy conserving method for solving the fractional nonlinear Schrodinger equation. We remedy this situation by modifing two methods found in the literature so that they are energy conserving. The first method which we call the Crank-Nicolson L2 method is proven to …
