A Cross Layer Routing Scheme For Passive Rfid Tag-To-Tag Communication, Haifeng Niu, S. Jagannathan
A Cross Layer Routing Scheme For Passive Rfid Tag-To-Tag Communication, Haifeng Niu, S. Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A routing protocol for Passive RFID tag-to-tag networks is not reported in contrast with routing protocols for battery powered mobile wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. In this paper, we provide a cross-layer approach for passive RFID tag-to-tag communication. In the data link layer, we designed the medium access control (MAC) protocol which is suitable for passive tag-to-tag communication. In the network layer, we developed the optimal link cost multipath routing (OLCMR) protocol by using modulation depth as the link cost. Simulation results verify that proposed routing protocol consumes less energy when it is compared to optimum link state routing …

Participatory sensing is an approach to data collection where individuals use their smartphones to capture different scenarios, and upload to a server to create knowledge. A fundamental issue in such data collection process is the coverage of the collected data that reflects how well the targeted area is monitored. To ensure coverage requirements, the traditional approaches require the server to know the location of the participating mobile devices that takes significant amount of energy. In this paper, we propose a novel framework called PLUS for data collection in participatory sensing ensuring partial coverage, where a mobile device does not send …

Online social communities often exhibit complex relationship structures, ranging from close friends to political rivals. As a result, persons are influenced by their friends and foes differently. Network applications can benefit from accompanying these structural differences in propagation schemes. In this paper, we study the optimal influence propagation policies for networks with positive and negative relationship types. We tackle the problem of minimizing the end-to-end propagation cost of influencing a target person in favor of an idea by utilizing the relationship types in the underlying social graph. The propagation cost is incurred by social and physical network dynamics such as …

Fides: A Trust-Based Framework For Secure User Incentivization In Participatory Sensing, Francesco Restuccia, Sajal K. Das
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Participatory sensing (PS) has recently attracted tremendous attention given its potential for a wide variety of sensing applications. Due to the fact that PS systems rely completely on the data provided by the users, incentivizing users' active participation while guaranteeing data reliability is paramount to effectively employ PS systems in practical scenarios. In this paper, we first define a set of attacks which compromise data reliability of existing PS applications. Next, we propose a scalable and secure trust-based framework, called FIDES, which relies on the concept of mobile security agents (MSAs) and Jsang's trust model to rule out incorrect reports …

Periodic data collection is an important application in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Since sensors are power constrained, building energy efficient data collection topology offers significant challenge. Compression of correlated data is one of the widely used techniques in WSNs where sensory data are compressed along their routes toward the sink. Consequently, a data compression tree is formed in which a sensor (say, child) selects its parent based on the degree of correlation among their sensed data, and the data of the child node is compressed at the parent node. In periodic data collection, the data collected by individual sensors can …

This project identifies metrics for measuring the benefit of rail infrastructure projects for key stakeholders. It is important that stakeholders with an interest in community economic development play an active role in the development of the rail network. Economic development activities in both rural and urban settings are essential if a nation is to realize growth and prosperity. Many communities have developed goals and visions to establish an economic development program, but they often fail to achieve their goals due to uncertainties during the project selection and planning process. Communities often select a project from a vast pool of ideas …

Efficient And Secure Code Dissemination In Sensor Clouds, Vimal Kumar, Sanjay Kumar Madria
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we present an efficient and secure code dissemination technique aimed at sensor clouds. Previous code dissemination techniques were geared toward traditional wireless sensor networks. They did not take into account, the dynamic nature of a sensor cloud, where the applications running on the motes may not just be updated but changed completely in successive code disseminations. The technique presented in this paper is based upon the observation that a large amount of code is common between applications in wireless sensor networks. Our technique first discovers the code common across various wireless sensor applications. It then distributes this …

E-Vet: Economic Reward/Penalty-Based System For Vehicular Traffic Management, Nilesh Padhariya, Ouri Wolfson, Anirban Mondal, Varun Gandhi, Sanjay Kumar Madria
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
We propose the E-VeT system for efficient vehicular traffic management in road networks using economy-based reward/penalty schemes. In E-VeT, base stations collaboratively facilitate dynamic vehicular route assignments for reducing the traffic congestion, average time of arrival and fuel consumption. The main contributions of this work are two-fold. First, it proposes an R2A (Revenue-based Route Allocation) scheme, which rewards vehicles for following system-assigned longer-time paths, and charges a fee for following system-assigned shorter-time paths. Furthermore, it penalizes vehicles for any deviations from the system-assigned paths. Second, it discusses a route allocation algorithm, which gives lesser-time paths as a preference to vehicles …

ATP release from erythrocytes in response to reduced oxygen (O2) tension stimulates local vasodilation, enabling these cells to direct perfusion to areas in skeletal muscle in need of O2. Erythrocytes of humans with type 2 diabetes do not release ATP in response to low O2. Both C-peptide and insulin individually inhibit low O2-induced ATP release from healthy human erythrocytes, yet when co administered at physiological concentrations and ratios, no inhibition is seen. Here, we determined: that 1) eryth-rocytes of healthy humans and humans with type 2 diabetes possess a C-peptide receptor (GPR146), 2) the combination of C-peptide and insulin at …

An Integrated Active Power Filter-Ultracapacitor Design To Provide Intermittency Smoothing And Reactive Power Support To The Distribution Grid, Deepak Somayajula, Mariesa L. Crow
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Grid integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) is increasing rapidly. Furthermore, smart grid technologies are making the grid more bi-directional providing opportunities to consumers to supply power back to the grid. Energy storage technologies like battery and ultracapacitor (UCAP) can be integrated through grid-tied inverters to support variable DERs such as solar and wind. In these cases, the energy storage with active power capability can improve grid performance by providing active and reactive power support. In this paper, the concept of providing active/reactive power support and renewable intermittency smoothing to the distribution grid by UCAPs is presented. UCAPs have a …

We show the emergence of light localization in arrays of coupled optical waveguides with randomness only in the imaginary part of their refractive index and develop a one-parameter scaling theory for the normalized participation number of Floquet-Bloch modes. This localization introduces a different length scale in the decay of the autocorrelation function of a paraxial beam propagation. Our results are relevant to a vast family of systems with randomness in the dissipative part of their impedance spatial profile.

Rapid degradation of magnesium (Mg) alloys is the major drawback preventing these materials from being applicable as tissue engineering scaffolds. In order to resolve this issue, in this paper, porous Mg scaffolds coated by polycaprolactone (PCL) were synthesized and their material properties and in vitro biodegradation were fully examined. The results indicated that PCL coating can significantly enhance the compressive strength and degradation resistance of Mg scaffolds. We showed that while the uncoated Mg scaffold degrades completely (100% weight loss) after 72 h, the degradation (weight loss) of the Mg scaffolds coated by 3% and 6% PCL is only 36% …

An Ultracapacitor Integrated Power Conditioner For Intermittency Smoothing And Improving Power Quality Of Distribution Grid, Deepak Somayajula, Mariesa L. Crow
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Penetration of various types of distributed energy resources (DERs) like solar, wind, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) onto the distribution grid is on the rise. There is a corresponding increase in power quality problems and intermittencies on the distribution grid. In order to reduce the intermittencies and improve the power quality of the distribution grid, an ultracapacitor (UCAP) integrated power conditioner is proposed in this paper. UCAP integration gives the power conditioner active power capability, which is useful in tackling the grid intermittencies and in improving the voltage sag and swell compensation. UCAPs have low energy density, high-power density, …

Novel Through-Silicon-Via Inductor-Based On-Chip Dc-Dc Converter Designs In 3d Ics, Umamaheswara Rao Tida, Cheng Zhuo, Yiyu Shi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
There has been a tremendous research effort in recent years to move DC-DC converters on chip for enhanced performance. However, a major limiting factor to implementing on-chip inductive DC-DC converters is the large area overhead induced by spiral inductors. Thus, we propose using through-silicon-vias (TSVs), a critical enabling technique in three-dimensional (3D) integrated systems, to implement on-chip inductors for DC-DC converters. While existing literature show that TSV inductors are inferior compared with conventional spiral inductors due to substrate loss for RF applications, in this article, we demonstrate that it is not the case for DC-DC converters, which operate at relatively …

Enhanced Rare-Region Effects In The Contact Process With Long-Range Correlated Disorder, Ahmed K. Ibrahim, Hatem Barghathi, Thomas Vojta
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We investigate the nonequilibrium phase transition in the disordered contact process in the presence of long-range spatial disorder correlations. These correlations greatly increase the probability for finding rare regions that are locally in the active phase while the bulk system is still in the inactive phase. Specifically, if the correlations decay as a power of the distance, the rare-region probability is a stretched exponential of the rare-region size rather than a simple exponential as is the case for uncorrelated disorder. As a result, the Griffiths singularities are enhanced and take a non-power-law form. The critical point itself is of infinite-randomness …

Dmctcp: Desynchronized Multi-Channel Tcp For High Speed Access Networks With Tiny Buffers, Cheng Cui, Lin Xue, Chui Hui Chiu, Praveenkumar Kondikoppa, Seung Jong Park
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
The past few years have witnessed debate on how to improve link utilization of high-speed tiny-size buffer routers. Widely argued proposals for TCP traffic to realize acceptable link capacities mandate: (i) over-provisioned core link bandwidth; and (ii) non-bursty flows; and (iii) tens of thousands of asynchronous flows. However, in high-speed access networks where flows are bursty, sparse and synchronous, TCP traffic suffer severely from routers with tiny buffers. We propose a new congestion control algorithm called Desyn-chronized Multi-Channel TCP (DMCTCP) that creates a flow with multiple channels. It avoids TCP loss synchronization by desynchronizing channels, and it avoids sending rate …

Investigating The Fractal Nature Of Individual User Netflow Data, Levi Malott, Sriram Chellappan
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Modeling and characterizing Internet traffic has been a widely studied problem since the conception of the Internet. The self-similar, bursty nature of the traffic has led to a number of conventional statistical models that unfortunately provide relatively weak modeling power. Recently, fractal analysis techniques have emerged to better characterize and model Internet traffic data. However, past research studies have focused on describing and quantifying the fractal nature of Internet traffic on user groups, instead of a single user. In this paper the authors investigate the issue of individual users exhibiting fractal (self-similar behavior) behavior across multiple application types. Using real …

E-Darwin: Energy Aware Disaster Recovery Network Using Wifi Tethering, Mayank Raj, Krishna Kant, Sajal K. Das
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we propose a novel architecture called Energy Aware Disaster Recovery Network using Wi-Fi Tethering (E-DARWIN). The underlying idea is to make use of Wi-Fi Tethering technology ubiquitously available on wireless devices, like smartphones and tablets, to set up an ad hoc network for data collection in disaster scenarios. To this end, we design novel mechanisms, which aid in autonomous creation of the ad hoc network, distribution of data capturing task among the devices, and collection of data with minimum delay. Specifically, we design and implement a distributed coalition formation game for distributing the data capturing task among …

Optimal Pmu Placement For Identification Of Multiple Power Line Outages In Smart Grids, Jie Wu, Jinjun Xiong, Prasenjit Shil, Yiyu Shi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Placing appropriate numbers of PMUs is critical to collect phase angle data for best identifying multiple line outages in wide-area transmission system, because of high deployment costs. This work focuses on exploring the global optimal strategy of PMU deployment for maximizing the average identification capability of multiple line outages. Inspired by Kullback-Leibler (KL) distance, this paper proposes the closed-form mathematical model to describe the average identification capability of multiple simultaneous line outages. Using IEEE 14-bus system, the optimal trade-off between the average identification capability and the number of PMUs is characterized. The proposed model successfully portrays the statistical identification performance …

Performance Analysis Of Real-Time Traffic Over 802.11n Wireless Local Area Networks: An Experimental Study, John Podolanko, Sajib Datta, Sajal K. Das
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we describe a practical model of analyzing the performance of 802.11n Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) carrying real-time voice over IP (VoIP) traffic. In particular, we determine the response-time and packet loss of client nodes using traffic generators and network monitors. We demonstrate that there exists a correlation between the number of VoIP calls on a WLAN and the response time and packet loss between the nodes. We also determine maximum number of calls that can be handled on a WLAN before call quality is degraded. In addition, we calculate bandwidth utilization of the WLAN based on …
