Stochastic Adaptive Event-Triggered Control And Network Scheduling Protocol Co-Design For Distributed Networked Systems, Hao Xu, Avimanyu Sahoo, Sarangapani Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In a distributed 'networked control system' (NCS), multiple physical systems or agents are connected to their corresponding controllers through a shared packet-switched communication network. For such distributed NCS, periodic sampled controller design is unsuitable to handle packet-switched closed-loop control systems, and a novel stochastic optimal adaptive event-sampled controller scheme is proposed in the application layer for each physical system or agent expressed as an uncertain linear dynamic system. Lyapunov stability analysis will be utilized to derive the event trigger condition. In addition, a network scheduling protocol is also required for such NCS. Traditional network scheduling protocols are unsuitable for such …

A Revisit Of The Equilibrium Assumption For Predicting Near-Wall Turbulence, Farid Karimpour, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this study, we revisit the consequence of assuming equilibrium between the rates of production (P) and dissipation (∈) of the turbulent kinetic energy (k) in the highly anisotropic and inhomogeneous near-wall region. Analytical and dimensional arguments are made to determine the relevant scales inherent in the turbulent viscosity (νt) formulation of the standard k-∈ model, which is one of the most widely used turbulence closure schemes. This turbulent viscosity formulation is developed by assuming equilibrium and use of the turbulent kinetic energy (k) to infer the relevant velocity scale. We show that such turbulent viscosity formulations are not suitable …

This work presents a systematic investigation into the basis set convergence of harmonic vibrational frequencies of (H2O)2 and (HF)2 computed with second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) and the coupled-cluster singles and doubles method with perturbative connected triples, CCSD(T), while employing correlation-consistent basis sets as large as aug-cc-pV6Z. The harmonic vibrational frequencies presented here are expected to lie within a few cm-1 of the complete basis set (CBS) limit. For these important hydrogen-bonding prototype systems, a basis set of at least quadruple-ζ quality augmented with diffuse functions is required to obtain harmonic vibrational frequencies within 10 …

Sr-HA/Glass composites were produced. Phase composition of composites was evaluated. Their physical and mechanical properties were determined. Sintered composites mainly consisted of Sr-HA/β-TCP, or β-TCP/Ca2ZnSi2O7. The composites had porosity up to 4 times those of undoped Sr-HA. Compared to undoped Sr-HA, the Sr-HA/Glass composites had lower biaxial flexural strength and hardness. The Weibull modulus for the composites ranged from 2.77 to 18.74.

Connecting Peptide, or C-peptide, is a product of the insulin prohormone, and is released with and in amounts equimolar to those of insulin. While it was once thought that C-peptide was biologically inert and had little biological significance beyond its role in the proper folding of insulin, it is now known that C-peptide binds specifically to the cell membranes of a variety of tissues and initiates specific intracellular signaling cascades that are pertussis toxin sensitive. Although it is now clear that C-peptide is a biologically active molecule, controversy still remains as to the physiological significance of the peptide. Interestingly, C-peptide …

Understanding the relation between underlying matter distribution and biased tracers such as galaxies or dark matter halos is essential to extract cosmological information from ongoing or future galaxy redshift surveys. At sufficiently large scales such as the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale, a standard approach for the bias problem on the basis of the perturbation theory (PT) is to assume the "local bias" model in which the density field of biased tracers is deterministically expanded in terms of matter density field at the same position. The higher-order bias parameters are then determined by combining the power spectrum with higher-order statistics …
Laminar And Turbulent Regime Changes In Drinking Water Contact Tanks, Taylor C. Barnett, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy
Laminar And Turbulent Regime Changes In Drinking Water Contact Tanks, Taylor C. Barnett, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Transitions in flow regimes that can occur in drinking water contact tanks may significantly affect the disinfection efficiency of the system. To demonstrate these effects, the authors investigated the internal velocity fields and flow regime of a drinking water contact tank located in Jamestown, Colo. The baffling factor (BF) of the system fluctuated annually between 0.5 and 0.6 because of a shift in flow regime caused by changes in the flow rate of the system. The authors studied the effects of the regime change from laminar to turbulent flow (or vice versa) using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models and physical …

Gravitational waves from a variety of sources are predicted to superpose to create a stochastic background. This background is expected to contain unique information from throughout the history of the Universe that is unavailable through standard electromagnetic observations, making its study of fundamental importance to understanding the evolution of the Universe. We carry out a search for the stochastic background with the latest data from the LIGO and Virgo detectors. Consistent with predictions from most stochastic gravitational-wave background models, the data display no evidence of a stochastic gravitational-wave signal. Assuming a gravitational-wave spectrum of ΩGW(f)=Ωα±(f/fref)α±, we place 95% confidence level …

Many applications of ferroic materials, such as data storage and spintronics, are achieved through the control and manipulation of their domain wall (DW) orientations and configurations. Here we propose a rotational compatibility condition to identify low-energy DWs in perovskites with oxygen octahedral tilt instability. It is derived from the strong DW energy anisotropy arising from the rigidity and corner-sharing feature of the octahedral network. We analyze quantitatively the DWs in SrTiO3 and explain successfully the unusual ferroelectric DW width and energy in BiFeO3.
Secure Degrees Of Freedom For The Mimo Wiretap Channel With A Multiantenna Cooperative Jammer, Mohamed Nafea, Aylin Yener
Secure Degrees Of Freedom For The Mimo Wiretap Channel With A Multiantenna Cooperative Jammer, Mohamed Nafea, Aylin Yener
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A multiple antenna Gaussian wiretap channel with a multiantenna cooperative jammer (CJ) is considered and the secure degrees of freedom (s.d.o.f.), with N antennas at the sender, receiver, and eavesdropper, is derived for all possible values of the number of antennas at the cooperative jammer, K. In particular, the upper and lower bounds for the s.d.o.f. are provided for different ranges of K and shown to coincide. Gaussian signaling both for transmission and jamming is shown to be sufficient to achieve the s.d.o.f. of the channel, when the s.d.o.f. is integer valued. By contrast, when the channel has a non-integer …

Stability Design Criteria For Distribution Systems With Solid-State Transformers, Darshit G. Shah, M. L. Crow
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Due to recent advancements in semiconductor technology, power-electronic converters for high-voltage, high-power, and high-frequency applications will soon be commercially available. The theoretical concept of a distribution solid-state transformer (SST) is not recent, but with the use of advanced electronic switches and control strategies, the SST may soon become a practical reality. In this paper, conventional single-phase distribution transformers are replaced by solid-state transformers in a distribution test system to investigate their interactive dynamics. Under certain circumstances, instabilities due to harmonic resonance are observed. A design criterion for a solid-state transformer during no-load conditions has been proposed in order to avoid …

The cloud computing is an emerging model in which computing infrastructure resources are provided as a service over the internet. Data owners can outsource their data by remotely storing them in the cloud and enjoy on-demand high quality services from a shared pool of configurable computing resources. However, since data owners and the cloud servers are not in the same trusted domain, the outsourced data may be at risk as the cloud server may no longer be fully trusted. Therefore, data confidentiality, availability and integrity are of critical importance in such a scenario. The data owner encrypts data before storing …

Factors Affecting The Seismic Behavior Of Segmental Precast Bridge Columns, Haitham Dawood, Mohamed Elgawady, Joshua Hewes
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This manuscript discusses the design parameters that potentially affect the lateral seismic response of segmental precast post-tensioned bridge piers. The piers consist of precast circular cross section segments stacked one on top of the other with concentric tendons passing through ducts made in the segments during casting. The bottommost segments of the piers were encased in steel tubes to enhance ductility and minimize damage. An FE model was used to investigate different design parameters and how they influence the lateral force — displacement response of the piers. Design parameters investigated included the initial post-tensioning stress as a percentage of the …

We have performed calculations of the fully differential cross sections for electron-impact ionization of magnesium atoms. Three theoretical approximations, the time-dependent close coupling, the three-body distorted wave, and the distorted wave Born approximation, are compared with experiment in this article. Results will be shown for ionization of the 3s ground state of Mg for both asymmetric and symmetric coplanar geometries. Results will also be shown for ionization of the 3p state which has been excited by a linearly polarized laser which produces a charge cloud aligned perpendicular to the laser beam direction and parallel to the linear polarization. Theoretical and …

In this work we use the classical trajectory Monte Carlo method within an eight-electron scheme to theoretically study photonic spectra that follow charge-exchange processes between highly charged ions of charge states 10+, 17+, 18+, and 36+ with neutral argon. The energy range considered is 18 eV/amu to 4 keV/amu, covering typical electron beam ion traps and solar wind energies. The role played by multiple electron capture processes for the different collision systems under consideration is explicitly analyzed and its contribution separated as arising from radiative decay and autoionizing multiple capture. For the present collision systems we find that multiple electron …

The Correlated Non-Equilibrium Dynamics Of Few-Boson Systems In One-Dimensional Finite Lattices Is Investigated. Starting From Weak Interactions We Perform A Sudden Interaction Quench And Employ The Numerically Exact Multi-Layer Multi-Configuration Time-Dependent Hartree Method For Bosons To Obtain The Resulting Quantum Dynamics. Focusing On The Low-Lying Modes Of The Finite Lattice We Observe The Emergence Of Density-Wave Tunneling, Breathing And Cradle-Like Processes. In Particular, The Tunneling Induced By The Quench Leads To A 'global' Density-Wave Oscillation. The Resulting Breathing And Cradle Modes Are Inherent To The Local Intrawell Dynamics And Connected To Excited-Band States. Moreover, The Interaction Quenches Couple The Density-Wave …

In this paper, a novel neural network (NN) adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) control scheme for distributed parameter systems (DPS) governed by parabolic partial differential equations (PDE) is introduced in the presence of control constraints and unknown system dynamics. First, Galerkin method is utilized to develop a relevant reduced order system which captures the dominant dynamics of the DPS. Subsequently, a novel control scheme is proposed over finite horizon by using NN ADP. To relax the requirement of system dynamics, a novel NN identifier is developed. More-over, a second NN is proposed to estimate online the time-varying non-quadratic value function from …

Experimental cross sections and cross-section ratios reported in the literature for direct double ionization of the outer shells of helium, neon, and argon atoms resulting from bare ions ranging from protons to uranium and for antiprotons are analyzed in terms of a first- and second-order interference model originally proposed by McGuire [J. H. McGuire, Phys. Rev. Lett. 49, 1153 (1982) PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.49.1153]. Empirical formulas for the various contributions to double ionization plus information about the phase difference between the first- and second-order mechanisms are extracted from the data. Projectile and target scaling's are also extracted. Total cross sections and their ratios …

A price responsive demand (PRD) market has been perceived as the future of electricity markets with the capability of achieving economic benefits. It lays the foundation of demand response at the customer level. Time of use structures have been implemented widely to achieve load reshaping. This paper introduces a clustering-based methodology for obtaining optimal time of use structures (optimal number of levels and rate durations) based on historical load profiles and real-time prices. The study takes into account variation in weekday and weekend load profiles and also seasonal variations. A new hybrid policy that bridges the gap between seasonal time-of-use …

Robust Adaptive Channel Estimation In Mimo Underwater Acoustic Communications, Zengli Yang, Yahong Rosa Zheng
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
For underwater acoustic (UWA) communications, a robust iterative channel estimation based minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) adaptive turbo equalizer is proposed and studied for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detection. Rather than the classical MMSE or normalized least mean squares (NLMS) estimation algorithms, the improved proportionate NLMS (IPNLMS) is adopted for the iterative MIMO channel estimator. The MIMO channel estimation is performed jointly with the MMSE equalizer and the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) decoder. With inter-block interference removed, the MIMO MMSE equalization is performed with overlapped information subblocks without guard intervals, thus a high transmission efficiency is guaranteed, and performance degradation is prevented. …

Concrete dilation is one of the main parameters that controls the stress-strain behavior of confined concrete. Several analytical studies have been carried out to predict the stress-strain behavior of concrete encased in fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP), which is crucial for structural design. However, none of these studies have provided a simple formula to determine the dilation parameter that is always required in the finite element (FE) material modelling of concrete. This paper presents a simple empirical model predicting the confined concrete dilation parameter within the theoretical framework of a Karagozian and Case type concrete plasticity model. A set of 105 FRP-confined …

Water pollution through natural and anthropogenic activities has become a global problem causing short-and long-term impact on human and ecosystems. Substantial quantity of individual or mixtures of organic pollutants enter the surface water via point and nonpoint sources and thus affect the quality of freshwater. These pollutants are known to be toxic and difficult to remove by mere biological treatment. To date, most research on the removal of organic pollutants from wastewater were based on the exploitation of individual treatment process. This single-treatment technology has inherent challenges and shortcomings with respect to efficiency and economics. Thus, application of two advanced …
