A Study Of Some Methods Of Concentrating Uranium And Radium In Carnotite Ore, H. L. Gibbs Jan 1932

A Study Of Some Methods Of Concentrating Uranium And Radium In Carnotite Ore, H. L. Gibbs

Masters Theses

"Carnotite ore is a source of radium and it is the recovery of this element which is chiefly sought in its treatment. The radium results from the radioactive disintegration of uranium which is one of the constituents of the yellow mineral carnotite. The ores are largely low grade. Higher grade pockets occur scattered in the deposits and because of their irregular occurrence are not easily located. The larger low grade deposits which are more easily accessible contain considerable quantities of calcium carbonate and oxide minerals. These cause a high consumption of the acid used in the chemical treatment of the …

The Purification Of Missouri Fire Clays, James Joseph Offutt Jan 1932

The Purification Of Missouri Fire Clays, James Joseph Offutt

Bachelors Theses

"At the present time there appears to be an unlimited supply of high grade fire clay available for most any purpose. But some time in the future there will rise the problem of purifying the low grade clay to such an extent that it will be used in high grade fire clay products. Whatever purification method may be employed it must be applicable on a commercial scale and the cost of purification must be very low. Until the present time little if any work along this line has been reported. Apparently no one has ever attempted any serious efforts to …

The Solubility Of Inorganic Salts In Carbon Disulfide: The Case Of Aluminum Bromide, Herman Henry Kaveler Jan 1928

The Solubility Of Inorganic Salts In Carbon Disulfide: The Case Of Aluminum Bromide, Herman Henry Kaveler

Masters Theses

"Since about 1890, the interest in solubility has turned to a large extent to the investigation of the solubility of compounds in organic solvents. This has resulted in a great deal of work being done on the solubility of inorganic salts in non-aqueous solvents. As this mass of data steadily accumulated, the theoretical considerations of solubility and the ideal solution made rapid advances, as Hildebrand has pointed out. We express as much wonder over these theoretical advances as chemists did over the discover "that salts do dissolve in organic compounds". To add some useful data to that already accumulated on …

Mining Geology In The Rosiclare Fluorspar District, Paul Castleton Hatmaker Jan 1927

Mining Geology In The Rosiclare Fluorspar District, Paul Castleton Hatmaker

Professional Degree Theses

"The Illinois-Kentucky Fluorspar district is the largest of its kind in the United States and is one of the most important in the world. It lies on either side or the Ohio River in the extreme southeastern part of Illinois and the western part of Kentucky. The mineralized area is relatively small, embracing about 1500 square miles in all. On the Illinois side, the village of Rosiclare is the center of activity. With the exception of Cave-in-Rock, practically the entire production of Illinois comes from the immediate vicinity of Rosiclare and is produced by two companies, the Rosiclare Lead and …

On The Permanent Growth Of Grey Iron, Walter Edward Remmers Jan 1927

On The Permanent Growth Of Grey Iron, Walter Edward Remmers

Professional Degree Theses

"After making a survey of the available information on the subject of permanent growth in grey iron castings, it was found that very little definite information is available and such as is available does not seem to satisfy all conditions. As is perhaps generally known, grey iron castings withstand a growth in volume upon repeated heating and cooling, which growth is a permanent deformation and is not a function of the temperature co-efficient"--Review of Published Work, page 3.

Mapping From Aerial Photographs And Its Relation To Mining Enterprises, Thomas Rae Thomas

Professional Degree Theses

"It is not my purpose to discuss aerial cameras or the theory of aerial photographs in this thesis but to confine my efforts to the very practical business of making maps from aerial photographs and to point out where this system of mapping can be used to advantage in the mining industry"--Introduction, page 3.
