Isotope Effect Of Carbon Diffusion In An Fe-Si Alloy, Manfred Wuttig, E. T. Yen Jan 1969

Isotope Effect Of Carbon Diffusion In An Fe-Si Alloy, Manfred Wuttig, E. T. Yen

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The isotope effect of carbon diffusion in dilute iron silicon alloys containing 28Si and 30Si has been measured below room temperature using the Dis accommodation technique. The time dependence of the reluctivity has been analyzed in terms of two relaxation processes which are due to the reorientation of carbon interstitials in Fe-Fe and Fe-Si sites respectively. The ratio of the relaxation times of the two carbon isotopes 13C and 12C τ13/τ12 is 1.037 for the former and 1.007 for the latter process in the Fe+28Si alloy. The ratios of the relaxation times of the same carbon isotope 12C contained in …

A Determination Of The Speed Of Light By The Phase-Shift Method, John Rogers, Ronnie Mcmillan, Robert Pickett, Richard A. Anderson Jan 1969

A Determination Of The Speed Of Light By The Phase-Shift Method, John Rogers, Ronnie Mcmillan, Robert Pickett, Richard A. Anderson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A low-frequency, phase-shift method for the measurement of the speed of light has been developed. This technique gives results commensurate with other advanced laboratory methods. One advantage of this technique is that the apparatus is of reasonable size and most of the circuitry involves widely known amateur radio techniques. Furthermore, our use of a low modulating frequency permits use of the solid-state, electro-optical light shutter. This eliminates the rather dangerous liquid Kerr cell, thus making our apparatus more acceptable to application in the undergraduate advanced laboratory. From a pedagogical point of view, the student is allowed to use and become …

Mixed Magnetic Systems: A Model With Application To (1-X)Cdcr2s4 · Xcdcr2se4, Harry A. Brown

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Curie temperatures and asymptotic Curie temperatures are calculated for mixed magnetic systems by a semi-classical Bethe-Peierls-Weiss cluster approach. The systems are typified by (1-x) CdCr2Se4 · xCdCr2Se4 in which the substitution changes the anions but not the magnetic cations. It is found that next-nearest-neighbor interactions are needed to match the data but that, with them, excellent agreement can be obtained for a reasonably unique choice of the exchange integrals. © 1969.

Semiempirical Determination Of The Hydrogen Bond Energy For Water Clusters In The Vapor Phase. I. General Theory And Application To The Dimer, Richard W. Bolandee, James L. Kassner, Joseph T. Zung Jan 1969

Semiempirical Determination Of The Hydrogen Bond Energy For Water Clusters In The Vapor Phase. I. General Theory And Application To The Dimer, Richard W. Bolandee, James L. Kassner, Joseph T. Zung

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A simple semiempirical method is given for determining the hydrogen bond energy for water clusters in the vapor phase. This method is based on a general statistical-mechanical theory of clustering. The partition function for a system of clusters is used to determine the equilibrium distribution of clusters. In conjunction with available thermodynamic and spectroscopic data, the cluster equilibrium constants can be used to calculate the cluster potential energy and the hydrogen bond energy. Results for the water dimer agree quite well with other reported values obtained either by quantum-mechanical calculations or approximate thermodynamic estimates. A correct temperature dependence of the …

Generation Of Design Equations In Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Gary K. Maki, James H. Tracey, Robert J. Smith Jan 1969

Generation Of Design Equations In Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Gary K. Maki, James H. Tracey, Robert J. Smith

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

One step in the synthesis procedure for realizing an asynchronous sequential switching circuit is the generation of next-state and output state equations from a simplified and coded flow table description of the circuit. The usual approach for determining these equations is to first construct a state table from the coded flow table, and then construct transition and output tables. For large flow tables this can be quite a lengthy procedure. This note describes an algorithm which simplifies the synthesis procedure for normal fundamental-mode circuits by permitting the determination of these equations without explicit construction of the state table, transition table, …

Transients Analysis Of Distributed Systems, T. N. Trick, Jack J. Bourquin

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An isomorphic relation exists between the transient response of systems whose transfer functions are of the form H(s)=B and the transient response of systems whose transfer functions are of the form [formula omitted]. Several interesting conclusions are drawn from this relationship concerning the transient response of distributed systems. Structure Of Shock Waves With Nonequilibrium Radiation And Ionization, Harlan F. Nelson, R. Goulard Jan 1969

Structure Of Shock Waves With Nonequilibrium Radiation And Ionization, Harlan F. Nelson, R. Goulard

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The investigations of this study are concerned with: (1) the physical processes that occur in the precursor and in the nonequilibrium region behind a strong shock wave during its approach to equilibrium in an argon like gas; (2) the influence of different atom-atom collisional rates in the relaxation region on the precursor; and (3) the cause of precursor ionization, which in this study has been assumed to be the photoionization of both the ground and excited states. The argon like gas is regarded as a combination of two gases: one consisting of electrons and the other of atoms and ions. …

Methods For Evaluating The Performance Of Small Acoustic Filters, William S. Gatley, Raymond Cohen Jan 1969

Methods For Evaluating The Performance Of Small Acoustic Filters, William S. Gatley, Raymond Cohen

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Experimental methods are needed for determining the characteristics of small acoustic filters used in systems with pulsating gas flows. These characteristics could then be used to predict the performance of proposed filter designs in a particular system, according to plane wave acoustic theory. Dependence on trial-and-error experimentation in solving noise control problems would thus be minimized. A literature survey revealed only a few earlier attempts to evaluate the acoustic performance of small filters and filter elements. Three methods for determining reflection and transmission factors are described, evaluated, and compared. A method employing a standing wave tube of unique design is …

Diffusion Of Iron And Cobalt In Nickel Single Crystals, Charles Frederick Heuer Jan 1969

Diffusion Of Iron And Cobalt In Nickel Single Crystals, Charles Frederick Heuer

Doctoral Dissertations

"Diffusion coefficients of iron-59 in nickel have been determined in the temperature range 815°C to 1200°C. The temperature dependence can be represented by an Arrhenius type relationship,...The effect of the isotopic mass on the diffusion coefficient of cobalt in nickel has also been investigated. The isotope effect parameter, E, was found to vary from .26 to .84 over the temperature range 970.5°C to 1200°C. Both results are consistent with the single vacancy mechanism of diffusion. No evidence of divacancy contributions to the mass transport has been found"--Abstract, Page i.

Experimental Determination Of Dynamic Properties Of Aluminum Including Poisson's Ratio, Terry Lee Holman Jan 1969

Experimental Determination Of Dynamic Properties Of Aluminum Including Poisson's Ratio, Terry Lee Holman

Masters Theses

"Two rods of 7075-T651 aluminum are longitudinally impacted to investigate the material's dynamic properties. The test rod, initially at rest, is instrumented with strain gages to record the strain-time history after the impact rod, accelerated to uniform velocity by an air gun launcher, strikes the test rod. A camera records the strain-time pattern displayed on an oscilloscope. The experiment indicates a consistent rise time of approximately 9 µsec. Simple one-dimensional theory correlates well with the experimental data. Compensation is included for the transverse sensitivity of the gages used. The dynamic values for both the modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio …

Current Characteristics Of Electrically Sprayed Glycerine, Larry Eugene Stoddard Jan 1969

Current Characteristics Of Electrically Sprayed Glycerine, Larry Eugene Stoddard

Masters Theses

"The current carried by electrically-sprayed glycerine was measured, and an empirical relation was obtained for single-jet spraying, given by I = KIV0.45M0.55̇d-0.18 where V is the electrode voltage, Ṁ the mass-flow rate, and d the electrode spacing, the electrodes being a capillary and collecting plate. Peculiarities of the current waveform, including an exponentially rising envelope, for unstable-jet spraying and multiple-jet spraying, were recorded"--Abstract, page ii.

A Flood Frequency Study For Small Watersheds In Missouri, Ronald Anthony Rusch

Masters Theses

"The quantity and quality of streamflow data available on small watersheds in Missouri has improved in the last ten years. However, it will be years before there is sufficient data on both the large and small watersheds to enable investigators to conduct extensive studies in the state. This study of 70 small watersheds within the state of Missouri presents a technique to estimate the discharge from watershed of 25 square miles or less...Results from this study may be used in the design of small hydraulic structures such as culverts, bridges, and dams for small reservoirs"--Abstract, page ii.

An Impact Sensitivity Study Of Reactive Materials, Carl E. Delong Jan 1969

An Impact Sensitivity Study Of Reactive Materials, Carl E. Delong

Masters Theses

"The impact sensitivity of a potassium chlorate, stabilized red phosphorous, Quso, and magnesium oxide mixture in a 34/14/4/2 ratio has been found to be about 18 ł 5 gram-centimeters for a 50% sensitivity to initiation. Chi-square tests at the 95% confidence level have determined that it is not possible to reject the hypothesis that the distribution is either normally distributed or log-normally distributed within the 50% range. Humidity, aging, and some additives were found to desensitize the mixture. Energy versus drop weight and test height curves show that momentum considerations are crucial over large test ranges in studies of impact …

Fault Diagnosis Of Sequential Circuits, Virgil Willis Hughes Jan 1969

Fault Diagnosis Of Sequential Circuits, Virgil Willis Hughes

Masters Theses

"Compared to the problem of combinational network (CN) diagnosis, that of sequential network (SN) diagnosis has been an extremely difficult one. Present techniques of SN diagnosis are difficult to apply, and generally lead to lengthy test schedules or additional logic. This paper presents a new approach to the SN diagnostic problem which results in a substantially simpler technique than those found in the literature. The approach is to modify the SN so that it can be diagnosed from a combinatoric point of view. This is accomplished by the addition of outputs for testing purposes to certain lines in the circuit--no …

A Geochemical Study Of The Maquoketa Formation In Pike County, Missouri, John Siegfried Trapp Jan 1969

A Geochemical Study Of The Maquoketa Formation In Pike County, Missouri, John Siegfried Trapp

Masters Theses

"Statistical interpretation of geochemical data was used to determine the environment of deposition of the Maquoketa Formation in Pike County, Missouri. A cyclic sequence was noted which can be best explained by cyclic climatic changes. During the study it was found that elemental relationships which would be expected in a freshly deposited sediment can be found in core samples. In samples from outcrops and quarry faces these relationships have been destroyed. As these elemental relationships reflect mineralogical relationships, serious doubts have arisen as to the validity of petrographic studies of samples taken from outcrops. This study indicates weathering may be …

The Background Concentrations Of Copper, Lead, And Zinc In Streams Of The "New Lead Belt", Missouri, Nicholas Howard Tibbs Jan 1969

The Background Concentrations Of Copper, Lead, And Zinc In Streams Of The "New Lead Belt", Missouri, Nicholas Howard Tibbs

Masters Theses

"This study was initiated to determine the background concentrations of copper, lead, and zinc in the streams of the Viburnum Trend or New Lead Belt of southeast Missouri. Analytical methods were developed for atomic adsorption spectroscopy. These methods initially consisted of coextraction of cooper, lead, and zinc using the APDC/MIBK system, and finally of extraction of copper by APDC/MIBK and direct analysis of lead and zinc using the newly developed "Sampling Boat" technique. The data obtained from these analyses were arranged in histograms and critically analyzed. The background concentrations were established to be 4-6 ppb for all three elements. Methods …

Rotational Excitation Of Polar Molecules By Electrons, Marvin H. Mittleman, Jerry Peacher, Balazs F. Rozsnyai Dec 1968

Rotational Excitation Of Polar Molecules By Electrons, Marvin H. Mittleman, Jerry Peacher, Balazs F. Rozsnyai

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Rotational excitation of polar molecules is calculated in the approximation that the electron transit time is short compared with rotational periods with the result of an E-1 behavior of the cross section. Diffusion cross sections are calculated for Δl=0,1,2. Significant corrections to the Born approximation are obtained for large dipole moments. The range (in energy) of applicability of the result is discussed in terms of the energy dependence of the corrections, and a novel energy dependence of these corrections is encountered and explained.

Measurement Of Positron Annihilation Line Shapes With A Ge(Li) Detector, H. (Henry) P. Hotz, J. M. Mathiesen, J. P. Hurley Dec 1968

Measurement Of Positron Annihilation Line Shapes With A Ge(Li) Detector, H. (Henry) P. Hotz, J. M. Mathiesen, J. P. Hurley

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We observed that the annihilation radiation photopeak in a Ge(Li) detector is considerably broader than that of a γ ray of the same energy. It seems reasonable to assume that the increased width is the result of the Doppler broadening of the annihilation photopeak, i.e., the longitudinal Doppler shift of the radiations is measured, while the transverse shift is measured in the usual angular-correlation experiments. By using a computer stripping program to remove the distortion produced by the finite energy resolution of our detector, we obtain momentum distributions in agreement with those which have been published. Only one detector is …

Longitudinal Optical Phonon-Plasmon Coupling In Cds, Robert John Bell, Thomas J. Mcmahon, Donald G. Rathbun Dec 1968

Longitudinal Optical Phonon-Plasmon Coupling In Cds, Robert John Bell, Thomas J. Mcmahon, Donald G. Rathbun

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The longitudinal optical phonon-plasmon interaction theory of Varga is shown to be applicable to Gadoped CdS through the region of the first reflectivity minumum (2.5 to about 30 μ). The theoretical reflectivity vs wavelength for several concentrations of Ga-doped CdS are compared with experiment. The agreement between theory and experiment is particularly good for high dopant concentrations. A plot of the wavelength at minimum reflectivity vs impurity concentrations shows that the Varga theory does well in explaining the data. When phonon damping is introduced into the Varga dielectric function, the reflectivity over the whole region of resonance is more realistic. …

Modified Phase Representation And Effects Of Inelasticity In N/D Calculation Of P-Wave Pion-Pion Scattering, Barbara N. Hale, Arnold Tubis Oct 1968

Modified Phase Representation And Effects Of Inelasticity In N/D Calculation Of P-Wave Pion-Pion Scattering, Barbara N. Hale, Arnold Tubis

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

An N/D formalism based on a modified phase representation is used to study the effects of inelasticity on the ρ-wave pion-pion amplitude. The effects of high-energy inelasticity are introduced in terms of the assumed behavior of the high-energy phase (not phase shift) of the partial-wave amplitude. Using a ρ-exchange input force with the experimental ρ mass and a ρ width of about 100 MeV, and the assumption that the average phase is (1/2)π, for total c.m. energies greater than about 8Mπ, we find that there is no appreciable reduction in the width of the calculated ρ-wave resonance. We …

Design Recommendations For Diaphragm-Braced Beams, Columns And Wall-Studs, T. V. S. R. Apparao, George Winter, S. J. Errera

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION Light gage steel panels are often used as wall sheathing, roof decking or floor covering in steel framed buildings. These panels carry loads normal to their plane by virtue of their bending strength. Also, diaphragms formed by interconnecting such panels can resist shear deformation in their plane. Because of this shear resisting capacity, diaphragms can be very effective in bracing columns and beams of a steel frame against lateral buckling and, thus, increase the load carrying capacity of these members. For wall columns, such diaphragm bracing may be either directly attached or connected to girts which in turn are …

Investigation Of Torsional-Flexural Buckling Of Thin-Walled Open Sections With Unequal End Eccentricities, Nuri Celebi, George Winter Oct 1968

Investigation Of Torsional-Flexural Buckling Of Thin-Walled Open Sections With Unequal End Eccentricities, Nuri Celebi, George Winter

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION Compression members of thin walled open sections may buckle in the torsional-flexural mode at loads lower than the Euler buckling load, because of their low torsional rigidity. Doubly symmetric sections, loaded eccentrically in the plane of symmetry, buckle in the torsional-flexural mode when sufficient strength against flexural yielding is provided in the plane of loading. In singly symmetric sections, the shear center and centroid do not coincide. When such sections are loaded in the plane of symmetry, flexural buckling out of the plane of loading is possible only if the load acts at the shear center. Otherwise, torsional flexural …
