A new kinetic particle modeling framework was developed to investigate electrostatic transport of lunar regolith dust particles with applications to the concept of electrostatic sieving. the new approach is based on kinetic particle dynamics and includes major modules of sampling the particle size distribution, solving electric fields, and tracking motion of charged dust grains. a case study for a concept of electrostatic sieving was chosen to validate the new model. the simulation achieved similar performance of particle size classification as reported in the literature. the new model is computationally efficient (takes a few minutes on a PC-type laptop computer) so …

To date, the thermal and electrical properties of three-phase ceramics containing a boride phase, silicon carbide, and boron carbide have not been studied in detail. Further, the effect of the source of the boride powder has also not been investigated. This study produced three-phase ceramics containing titanium diboride, silicon carbide, and boron carbide using three different TiB2 sources: commercial powder, TiB2 synthesized by boro/carbothermal reduction, or (Ti,Cr)B2 synthesized by boro/carbothermal reduction to address the effect of the TiB2 source. Ceramics containing synthesized TiB2 or (Ti,Cr)B2 reached >99% relative density, while the ceramic produced from …

To ensure consistent performance of additively manufactured metal parts, it is advantageous to identify alloys that are robust to process variations. This paper investigates the effect of steel alloy composition on mechanical property robustness in laser-directed energy deposition (L-DED). In situ blending of ultra-high-strength low-alloy steel (UHSLA) and pure iron powders produced 10 compositions containing 10–100 wt.% UHSLA. Samples were deposited using a novel configuration that enabled rapid collection of hardness data. The Vickers hardness sensitivity of each alloy was evaluated with respect to laser power and interlayer delay time. Yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) sensitivities of …

Unstable periodic orbits (UPOs) play a key role in the theory of chaos, constituting the "skeleton" of classical chaotic systems and "scarring" the eigenstates of the corresponding quantum system. Recently, nonthermal many-body eigenstates embedded in an otherwise thermal spectrum have been identified as a many-body generalization of quantum scars. The latter, however, are not clearly associated to a chaotic phase space, and the connection between the single- and many-body notions of quantum scars remains therefore incomplete. Here, we find the first quantum many-body scars originating from UPOs of a chaotic phase space. Remarkably, these states verify the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, …

We present the most precise measurements to date for the spatial extension and energy spectrum of the γ-ray region between a pulsar's wind nebula and the interstellar medium, better known as the halo, present around Geminga and PSR B0656+14 (Monogem) using ∼2398 days of >1 TeV data collected by the HAWC observatory. We interpret the data using a physically motivated model for the diffuse γ-ray emission generated from positrons and electrons (e±) injected by the pulsar wind nebula and inverse Compton scattering with interstellar radiation fields. We find the morphologies of the regions inside these halos are characterized …

This paper investigates the origin of the γ-ray emission from MGRO J1908+06 in the GeV-TeV energy band. By analyzing the data collected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope, the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System, and High-Altitude Water Cherenkov, with the addition of spectral data previously reported by LHAASO, a multiwavelength study of the morphological and spectral features of MGRO J1908+06 provides insight into the origin of the γ-ray emission. The mechanism behind the bright TeV emission is studied by constraining the magnetic field strength, the source age, and the distance through detailed broadband modeling. Both spectral shape and …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A spinal cord injury (SCI) compresses the spinal cord, killing neurons and glia at the injury site and resulting in prolonged inflammation and scarring that prevents regeneration. Astrocytes, the main glia in the spinal cord, become reactive following SCI and contribute to adverse outcomes. The anti-inflammatory cytokine transforming growth factor beta 3 (TGFβ3) has been shown to mitigate astrocyte reactivity; however, the effects of prolonged TGFβ3 exposure on reactive astrocyte phenotype have not yet been explored. This study investigates whether magnetic core-shell electro spun fibers can be used to alter the release rate of TGFβ3 using externally applied magnetic fields, …

Egypt is famous for its fish wealth, given its large coasts and freshwater resources, especially of Nile Tilapia and Mugilid fish. It was estimated that domestic fish production increased from 889 thousand tonnes in 2005 to 1620 thousand tonnes in 2016. Thousands of tonnes of fish are consumed yearly, generating substantial amounts of fish waste and residues. Some 26% of the fish consumed is a typical waste. Fish wastes have a significant role in many processes and applications. They are used as feedstock for producing fish meals, a major by-product of fish waste oil. Fish oil is extracted for medical …

Boosting Predictive Accuracy Of Single Particle Models For Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Machine Learning, Emmanuel Olugbade, Jonghyun Park
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The accuracy of single particle (SP) models for lithium-ion batteries at high C-rates is constrained by lithium concentration gradients in the electrolyte, which affect ionic conductivity, overpotential, and reaction rates. This study addresses these limitations using extreme gradient boosting machine learning (ML). By training our ML model with data from a comprehensive electrochemical (P2D) model and performing sensitivity analysis on key battery parameters, we enhance predictive accuracy. Compared to conventional SP and P2D models under constant current loading, our ML-based SP model achieves similar predictive accuracy to P2D, with significant improvements in computational efficiency. Additionally, the ML-based SP model demonstrates …

Project AS-8
This report details the development and testing of an innovative robotic system for underwater mapping and bridge scour inspection, integrating a 3D sonar with a modified remotely operated vehicle (ROV). The system addresses limitations in traditional scour monitoring methods, such as safety concerns and poor visibility after flooding. The research approach included laboratory experiments, pool testing, and field trials at two bridge sites in Missouri, with procedures developed for both water surface and underwater deployments. The system effectively mapped underwater structures and scour conditions, especially in hard-to-reach areas, revealing critical scouring, exposed pier footings and debris accumulation. The water surface …

Final Report - Probability Of Detection In Corrosion Monitoring With Fe-C Coated Lpfg Sensors, Genda Chen, Ying Zhou, Pengfei Ma
Project SN-8
This project aimed to develop and evaluate two statistical methods for determining the probability of detection (POD) in corrosion monitoring using Fe–C coated long-period fiber grating (LPFG) sensors. These methods, referred to as the Size-of-Damage-at-Detection (SODAD) method and the Random Parameter Model (RPM), addressed limitations in traditional POD models by considering the time dependency inherent in sensor data. The goal was to assess steel mass loss at 90% detection probability and establish the largest undetectable mass loss threshold at a 95% lower confidence bound. Both methods were assessed for computational efficiency, sensitivity to distribution assumptions, and robustness under varying model …

Located in the southern field of view of the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory, the eHWC J1825-134 region is one of the most complicated gamma-ray emission sites on the galactic plane. The region contains a few PeVatron candidates that can accelerate particles up to PeV energies. Disentangling the overlapping gamma-ray emission and associating it with accelerators is crucial to understand the mechanism of cosmic-ray acceleration and gamma-ray production near the accelerators. In this talk, I will present each of the gamma-ray sources resolved in this region using 1910 days of HAWC data, including their spectra. Also, we have studied their …

The Advanced Particle-astrophysics Telescope (APT) is a planned space-based observatory designed to localize MeV to TeV transients such as gamma-ray bursts in real time using onboard computational hardware. The Antarctic Demonstrator for APT (ADAPT) is a prototype high-altitude balloon mission scheduled to fly during the 2025–26 season. Gamma-ray-induced scintillations in CsI tiles will be captured by perpendicular arrays of optical fibers running across both tile surfaces, as well as SiPM-based edge detectors to improve light collection and calorimetry. Signal samples are captured by analog waveform digitizer ASICs then sent to the front end of the computational pipeline, which is designed …

Understanding the complete nature of Galactic sources that accelerate cosmic rays up to 1015 eV energy (Galactic PeVatrons) is still an unsolved problem in high-energy astrophysics. Although supernova remnants have long been considered as the best candidates for Galactic PeVatrons, a clear association of SNRs with PeVatrons needs further exploration. Recently, the LHAASO collaboration published its first catalog of 90 very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray sources, and a few of them have no obvious counterparts at other wavelengths. Here, we will present morphology and spectral analysis of one such unassociated source LHAASO J2108+5157 using VERITAS and HAWC data.

High energy γ-ray observations are an essential probe of cosmic-ray acceleration mechanisms. The detection of the highest energy γ rays and the shortest timescales of variability are the key to improve our understanding of the acceleration processes and the environment of the cosmic accelerators. The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) experiment is a large field-of-view, multi-TeV, γ-ray observatory continuously operating at 4100 m a.s.l. since March 2015. The HAWC observatory has an order of magnitude better sensitivity, angular resolution, and background rejection than the previous generation of water-Cherenkov arrays. The improved performance allows us to discover new TeV sources, to detect …

The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory is highly suitable for large-scale survey work. The high duty time (95%), large instantaneous FoV (2 sr), and sensitivity over the 300 GeV to more than 100 TeV energy range make it ideal for creating a catalog of very high energy (VHE) sources. Over the lifetime of the HAWC observatory, 4 catalogs have been produced 3 of which were constructed utilizing the full HAWC energy range while another used a restricted (>56 TeV) range. This talk will focus on the status of the planned 4HWC (full energy range) catalog including the newly developed …

Monocular Depth Estimation (MDE) plays a crucial role in vision-based Autonomous Driving (AD) systems. It utilizes a singlecamera image to determine the depth of objects, facilitating driving decisions such as braking a few meters in front of a detected obstacle or changing lanes to avoid collision. In this paper, we investigate the security risks associated with monocular vision-based depth estimation algorithms utilized by AD systems. By exploiting the vulnerabilities of MDE and the principles of optical lenses, we introduce 𝐿𝑒𝑛𝑠𝐴𝑡𝑡𝑎𝑐𝑘, a physical attack that involves strategically placing optical lenses on the camera of an autonomous vehicle to manipulate the perceived …

Water is a precious global resource that is important in most currently employed coal beneficiation practices. These widely accepted processes deliver consistent and precise separation efficiencies at desired product yields and throughputs. Although favored, the water usage related to wet processing may be impractical and unsustainable in certain regions. Consequently, present-day practices used in coal processing may soon have to adapt, irrespective of any improved technical and economic feasibility offered. Therefore, the development of efficacious dry beneficiation methods has become an appealing research topic. This review assembles information pertaining to the principle and success of commercially available and experimental phase …

Tripodal ligands that can encapsulate single or multiple metal sites in C3-symmetric geometric configurations constitute valuable targets for novel catalysts. Of particular interest in ligand development are efforts toward incorporating apical elements that exhibit little if any electron donicity, to enhance the electrophilic nature of a trans positioned active oxidant (e.g., metal-oxo, -nitrene). The tripodal ligand TMG3trphen-Arene has been synthesized, featuring an arene platform 1,3,5-substituted with phenylene arms possessing tetramethylguanidinyl (TMG) residues. Compound [(TMG3trphen-Arene) Cu3(μ-Cl)3] has been subsequently synthesized by extracting a Cu3(μ-Cl)3 cluster from anhydrous CuCl and shown to encapsulate a crown-shaped …

Classically, a continuous function f:R→R is periodic if there exists an ω>0 such that f(t+ω)=f(t) for all t∈R. The extension of this precise definition to functions f:Z→R is straightforward. However, in the so-called quantum case, where f:qN0→R (q>1), or more general isolated time scales, a different definition of periodicity is needed. A recently introduced definition of periodicity for such general isolated time scales, including the quantum calculus, not only addressed this gap but also inspired this work. We now return to the continuous case and present the concept of ν-periodicity that connects these different formulations of periodicity for …

We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation in three space dimensions with a focusing cubic nonlinearity and defocusing quintic nonlinearity and in the presence of an external inverse-square potential. We establish scattering in the region of the mass-energy plane where the virial functional is guaranteed to be positive. Our result parallels the scattering result of [11] in the setting of the standard cubic-quintic NLS.

We unravel stationary states in the form of dark soliton stripes, bubbles, and kinks embedded in a two-dimensional droplet-bearing setting emulated by an extended Gross-Pitaevskii approach. The existence of these configurations is corroborated through an effectively reduced potential picture demonstrating their concrete parametric regions of existence. The excitation spectra of such configurations are analyzed within the Bogoliubov-de Gennes framework exposing the destabilization of dark soliton stripes and bubbles, while confirming the stability of droplets, and importantly unveiling spectral stability of the kink against transverse excitations. Additionally, a variational approach is constructed providing access to the transverse stability analysis of the …

Transfer-learned models have achieved promising performance in numerous fields. However, high-performing transfer-learned models contain a large number of parameters. In this paper, we propose a transfer learning approach with parameter reduction and potential high performance. Although the high performance depends on the nature of the dataset, we ensure the parameter reduction. In the proposed SpinalNet shared parameters, all intermediate-split-incoming parameters except the first-intermediate-split contain a shared value. Therefore, the SpinalNet shared parameters network contains three parameter groups: (1) first input-split to intermediate-split parameters, (2) shared intermediate-split-incoming parameters, and (3) intermediate-split-to-output-split parameters. The total number of parameters becomes lower than the …

Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft attract attention due to their unique characteristics of reduced noise, moderate pollutant emission, and lowered operating cost. However, the benefits of electric vehicles, including eVTOL aircraft, are critically challenged by the energy density of batteries, which prohibit long-distance tasks and broader applications. Since the takeoff process of eVTOL aircraft demands excessive energy and couples multiple subsystems (such as aerodynamics and propulsion), multidisciplinary analysis and optimization (MDAO) become essential. Conventional MDAO, however, iteratively evaluates high-fidelity simulation models, making the whole process computationally intensive. Surrogates, in lieu of simulation models, empower efficient MDAO with the …

In directed energy deposition (DED), accurately controlling and predicting melt pool characteristics is essential for ensuring desired material qualities and geometric accuracies. This paper introduces a robust surrogate model based on recurrent neural network (RNN) architectures—Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Bidirectional LSTM (Bi-LSTM), and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU). Leveraging a time series dataset from multi-physics simulations and a three-factor, three-level experimental design, the model accurately predicts melt pool peak temperatures, lengths, widths, and depths under varying conditions. RNN algorithms, particularly Bi-LSTM, demonstrate high predictive accuracy, with an R-square of 0.983 for melt pool peak temperatures. For melt pool geometry, the GRU-based …
