Circular Dichroism In Achiral Metasurfaces Induced By Spatially Selective Coupling With Molecules, Baojuan Han, Xiaodong Yang, Jie Gao

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Achiral metasurfaces with near-field optical chirality have attracted great attention in molecular sensing and chiral emission control. Here, the circular dichroism (CD) response of an achiral metasurface induced by spatially selective coupling with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) molecules is demonstrated. A designed achiral metasurface with a V-shaped resonator exhibits large optical chirality with a strongly dissymmetric distribution under circular polarization. By introducing a PMMA molecule layer on top of the metasurface, which covers the area with large optical chirality, CD in absorption of 0.38 and a dissymmetric factor of optical chirality gc of 0.16 are obtained. Furthermore, an analysis of the …

Collision-Free Exploration By Mobile Agents Using Pebbles, Sajal K. Das, Amit Kumar Dhar, Barun Gorain, Madhuri Mahawar

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we study collision-free graph exploration in an anonymous network. The network is modeled as a graph G = (V, E) where the nodes of the graph are unlabeled, and each edge incident to a node v has a unique label, called the port number, in {0, 1, ⋯, d - 1}, where d is the degree of the node v. Two identical mobile agents, starting from different nodes in G have to explore the nodes of G in such a way that for every node v in G, at least one mobile agent visits v and no …

Smevca: Stable Matching-Based Ev Charging Assignment In Subscription-Based Models, Arindam Khanda, Anurag Satpathy, Anusha Vangala, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The rapid shift from internal combustion engine vehicles to battery-powered electric vehicles (EVs) presents considerable challenges, such as limited charging points (CPs), unpredictable wait times for charging, and difficulty in selecting appropriate CPs for EVs. To address these challenges, we propose a novel end-to-end framework, called Stable Matching based EV Charging Assignment (SMEVCA) that efficiently assigns charge-seeking EVs to CPs with the assistance of roadside units (RSUs). The proposed framework operates within a subscription-based model, ensuring that the subscribed EVs complete their charging within a predefined time limit enforced by a service level agreement (SLA). The framework SMEVCA employs a …

Massera’S Theorem On Arbitrary Discrete Time Domains, Martin Bohner, Jaqueline G. Mesquita, Sabrina Streipert Jan 2025

Massera’S Theorem On Arbitrary Discrete Time Domains, Martin Bohner, Jaqueline G. Mesquita, Sabrina Streipert

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a general version of Massera's theorems for arbitrary discrete domains, based on a newly introduced definition for both linear and nonlinear equations. For scalar nonlinear equations, we identify sufficient conditions that ensure each µ-bounded solution approaches a periodic solution asymptotically. In the case of linear systems, we prove that the presence of a µ-bounded solution necessarily leads to a periodic solution. We also provide some examples to show the practical implications of our findings.

Estimation And Model Misspecification For Recurrent Event Data With Covariates Under Measurement Errors, Ravinath Alahakoon, Gideon K.D. Zamba, Xuerong Meggie Wen, Akim Adekpedjou

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

For subject i, we monitor an event that can occur multiple times over a random observation window [0, (Formula presented.)). At each recurrence, p concomitant variables, (Formula presented.), associated to the event recurrence are recorded—a subset ((Formula presented.)) of which is measured with errors. To circumvent the problem of bias and consistency associated with parameter estimation in the presence of measurement errors, we propose inference for corrected estimating equations with well-behaved roots under an additive measurement errors model. We show that estimation is essentially unbiased under the corrected profile likelihood for recurrent events, in comparison to biased estimations under a …

Existence Results For A Discrete Fractional Boundary Value Problem, David Barilla, Martin Bohner, Giuseppe Caristi, Shapour Heidarkhani, Shahin Moradi

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this study, we investigate the existence of at least one solution and the existence of an infinite number of solutions for a discrete fractional boundary value problem. Requiring an algebraic condition on the nonlinear term for small values of the parameter and requiring an additional asymptotical behavior of the potential at zero, we investigate the existence of at least one nontrivial solution for the problem. Moreover, under suitable assumptions on the oscillatory behavior of the nonlinearity at infinity, for exact collections of the parameter, we discuss the existence of a sequence of solutions for the problem. We also present …

Floquet Theory For First-Order Delay Equations And An Application To Height Stabilization Of A Drone’S Flight, Martin Bohner, Alexander Domoshnitsky, Oleg Kupervasser, Alex Sitkin

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we proposed a version of the Floquet theory for delay differential equations. We demonstrated that very natural assumptions for control in technical applications can lead us to a one-dimensional fundamental system. This approach allowed researchers to work with classical methods used in the case of ordinary differential equations. On this basis, new original unexpected results on the exponential stability were proposed. For example, in the equation x' (4)+a(t)x(t—-T(7)) = 0, t € [0, co), we avoided the assumption on the smallness of the product sup,j9,.) 41 SUP;< {9,00) TD) < 3/2 for asymptotic stability. We obtained that in the case of w-periodic coefficient and delay, the fact that the period w was situated in a corresponding interval can lead to exponential stability. We then applied our new tests of stability to the stabilization of a drone's flight, where smallness of the noted above product could not be achieved from a technical point of view. For an equation with periodic coefficient and delay, we got a formula of the solution's representation on the semiaxis.

A Unified Concept Of Periodicity On Any Time Scale And Applications, Martin Bohner, Jaqueline G. Mesquita, Sabrina H. Streipert Jan 2025

A Unified Concept Of Periodicity On Any Time Scale And Applications, Martin Bohner, Jaqueline G. Mesquita, Sabrina H. Streipert

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We introduce a novel definition of periodicity on arbitrary time scales, dependent on a strictly increasing and differentiable function. This removes the commonly used and restrictive assumption of a periodic time scale to define periodic functions. Our new definition furthermore allows for a wider class of functions to be studied using the theory of periodic systems. After providing crucial properties of these periodic functions, such as the translation invariance of integrals of periodic functions, we apply the concept of this new periodicity to linear dynamic equations. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a linear dynamic equation to have such …

This work presents new Kneser-type oscillation criteria for second-order quasilinear functional dynamic equations defined on arbitrary unbounded above time scales. Our approach employs the Riccati transformation technique in conjunction with the integral averaging method. The results show a significant improvement over recent Kneser-type oscillation criteria. We provided several illustrative examples to highlight the importance of our findings.

Development Of Dual-Scan Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (Nmr) Pulse Programs For Spin-Lattice Relaxation Measurements, Zachary Mayes Jan 2025

Development Of Dual-Scan Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (Nmr) Pulse Programs For Spin-Lattice Relaxation Measurements, Zachary Mayes

Doctoral Dissertations

This research develops and refines the Split Inversion Pulse and Recovery (SIP R) methodology for spin-lattice relaxation (T₁) measurements in NMR spectroscopy. SIP R introduces a two-scan difference technique using a split inversion pulse sequence, where the 180° pulse is split into two 90° pulses phase-shifted with respect to each other. This approach simplifies data fitting, requiring only two parameters to extract T₁ values, compared to the traditional inversion-recovery method, which needs three. The SIP-R-DS and SIP-R-S adaptations extend this framework by incorporating selective NMR resonance excitations, enhancing its applicability to cross-polarization experiments and enabling unobstructed NOE measurements. These adaptations …

Critical Heat Flux (CHF) is a fundamental parameter for ensuring the performance, reliability, safety, and economic viability of water-cooled nuclear reactors. Despite its significance, the absence of a deterministic theory for CHF prediction poses a substantial challenge in thermal engineering. Consequently, various experimental and numerical models have been developed, yet no universally accepted model comprehensively addresses the wide range of flow conditions encountered in practical applications. The accurate prediction of CHF remains a complex and critical task. This work introduces a novel Deep Decoder Type Cascaded feedforward Neural Network (DD-CFNN) to predict CHF across a broad spectrum of operating conditions. …

Quasi-2D perovskite made with organic spacers co-crystallized with inorganic cesium lead bromide inorganics is demonstrated for near unity photoluminescence quantum yield at room temperature. However, light emitting diodes made with quasi-2D perovskites rapidly degrade which remains a major bottleneck in this field. In this work, It is shown that the bright emission originates from finely tuned multi-component 2D nano-crystalline phases that are thermodynamically unstable. The bright emission is extremely sensitive to external stimuli and the emission quickly dims away upon heating. After a detailed analysis of their optical and morphological properties, the degradation is attributed to 2D phase redistribution associated …

Data-Driven Layout Design For Smart Remanufacturing: A Flexible Optimization Model And A Case Study, J. A. Afari, A. Gosavi, J. Hu, R. J. Marley

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Abstract: In remanufacturing, a vital segment of the sustainable, low-carbon circular economy, existing versions of the traditional unequal-areas facility layout problem (UA-FLP) model face significant limitations in designing layouts. To be specific, in the process of minimizing the material-handling cost (MHC), these models also alter departmental dimensions, often diverging from construction specifications. This poses a difficulty, as critical equipment required for remanufacturing, e.g., sorting and cleaning machines, have unalterable dimensions, which implies that departmental dimensions cannot be changed from specifications provided. To address this, a novel Flexible Envelope UA-FLP (FE-UA-FLP) model is proposed in this work for designing layouts wherein …
