Pneumatic Ore Concentration, Robert Winters Johnson, Walter William Weissbach Jan 1916

Pneumatic Ore Concentration, Robert Winters Johnson, Walter William Weissbach

Bachelors Theses

"The concentration of lead and zinc ores by means of air is practically an unexplored field, although the subject is by no means a new one. Considerable research work has been done and several methods, processes and machines have been developed, but little or nothing has been accomplished towards making air separation a success. the lack of success has been due mainly to two reasons:- (1) That very little has been known about the internal conduct of air currents, and (2) that nearly all methods and machines so far worked out have presupposed the fact that the ore to be …

An Investigation Of Blended Cements, Byron Lee Ashdown Jan 1916

An Investigation Of Blended Cements, Byron Lee Ashdown

Bachelors Theses

"It is generally accepted to be a fact that the coarser particles of a cement are practically inert, and that it is only the finest particles that possess the cementing qualities. Exactly what percentage of the whole is active, or possesses the cementing properties, is not known. Since but few experiments pertaining to such have been performed there is consequently little data to be found"--Introduction, page 3.

Flotation Applied To Silicate Sludge, Yaro Klepel, Greene Erskine Jan 1916

Flotation Applied To Silicate Sludge, Yaro Klepel, Greene Erskine

Bachelors Theses

"Within the past few years great success has been made of the flotation of sulfids, and to a certain extent of carbonates.

Since sulfids are easily recovered by flotation it seems practicable that silicates could be made to float by first sulfidizing them, and then subjecting them to ordinary flotation treatment.

This problem involves the treatment of a silicate sludge obtained from the Joplin district, the sludge will easily pass through a 250 mesh screen. At the present time this sludge is being sent to the tailings pond.

The experimental work of this thesis was done along the line of …

The Flotation Of A West Joplin, Mo. Slime, John Stone Hoffman, James Joseph Dowd Jan 1916

The Flotation Of A West Joplin, Mo. Slime, John Stone Hoffman, James Joseph Dowd

Bachelors Theses

"Owing to the high price of zinc and the success attending flotation in other districts, intense interest was aroused in the flotation of slimes of the South-West Missouri District. These slimes are the accumulation of the finer particles of the ore during the milling process and their metallic content is generally higher than that of the original ore. They have been disposed of, in the past, by sluicing them to the tailings ponds because no economical method of saving the zinc had been discovered. The object of our experiments was to economically extract from these slimes, by flotation, a product …

An Investigation In Concrete, Don H. Morgan Jan 1916

An Investigation In Concrete, Don H. Morgan

Bachelors Theses

"It is the purpose of this investigation to determine the effect of blending a portland cement with a fine silica sand. A blended cement such as this has been used successfully and economically in several important works. The United States Reclamation Service and the Los Angeles Aqueduct commission have made use of such a blended cement in several important structures. This dilution, so to say, of the cement results is a decrease in cost without a loss of strength. In this investigation it has been assured that the cement retained on a #200 sieve is inert and may be replaced …

The Cost Of Producing Electricity At The Hamilton, Missouri Light And Power Company, Bernerd William Adams Jan 1916

The Cost Of Producing Electricity At The Hamilton, Missouri Light And Power Company, Bernerd William Adams

Bachelors Theses

"For those seeking information on the cost of producing electricity in steam plants, an unlimited amount of data may be found in the technical journals and text books. This information, however, is obtained from a careful analysis of the daily and hourly records kept by the largest central stations, hence, production costs are available only where the yearly out-put is several million kilowatt-hours. the small isolated stations of from one hundred to two hundred kilowatt capacity have not as a rule, become progressive enough to keep a complete record of operating costs...The test hereinafter reported was conducted from August 3rd. …

Construction And Maintenance Of Kansas City Boulevard Pavements, Ralph Robert Benedict Jan 1916

Construction And Maintenance Of Kansas City Boulevard Pavements, Ralph Robert Benedict

Professional Degree Theses

"In the first years of the history of the Park and Boulevard System of this city, road surfaces for boulevards received careful consideration for people were not satisfied with a good earth road well maintained. As the years have passed and the great changes have come in the methods of transportation, the evolution of pavements has had to keep pace with these changes"--page 1.

Comparison Of Operating Expenses And Capital Expenditures Of Two Different Types Of Boiler Rooms Covering Extensions Expected During The Next Twenty Years, George Hewitt Boyer Jan 1916

Comparison Of Operating Expenses And Capital Expenditures Of Two Different Types Of Boiler Rooms Covering Extensions Expected During The Next Twenty Years, George Hewitt Boyer

Professional Degree Theses

"This thesis applies to a central power station located in a rapidly growing manufacturing city with a present population of 40,000. The station is connected by high voltage transmission lines with six hydro and steam generating stations located in other cities. These transmission lines are mainly for emergency purposes so that this report considers that the station here studied will carry its full load. The boiler room is the only part of the station considered in this thesis as a previous study showed that there was ample space in the engine room for turbo-generator for years to come"--Introduction, page 1.

Cyaniding The Buckhorn Clay, Paul Richardson Cook Jan 1916

Cyaniding The Buckhorn Clay, Paul Richardson Cook

Professional Degree Theses

"The Buckhorn, Nevada, gold mine is peculiar in being a shallow kaolinized mass of material with basalt walls, having no direct connection with any of the usual gold bearing rocks, the average ore containing 16% water of hydratum. the cyaniding of this hydrant clayey material offered unusual difficulties compared with the usual gold quartz ore of Nevada. The ore body was thoroughly developed; then the mill was built according to the latest cyanide practice, with such changes as was thought the peculiar nature of this ore demanded. Upon starting the mill, the ore proved more difficulty to handle than had …

A Wet Process For The Extraction Of Mercury, Robert Glenn Sickly Jan 1916

A Wet Process For The Extraction Of Mercury, Robert Glenn Sickly

Professional Degree Theses

"In this paper it will be the aim of the writer to deal as exclusively as possible with the Mercury Extraction Process as applied at the High-Grade Plant of the Buffalo Mines, Limited, Cobalt, Ontario, Canada. it will be necessary at times to refer to the treatment of the ore for the extraction of silver"--Introduction, page 2.

Land Drainage In Central Iowa, Ernst Lorenze Chamberlain Jan 1916

Land Drainage In Central Iowa, Ernst Lorenze Chamberlain

Professional Degree Theses

"The problems encountered in land drainage are comparatively simple when seen from an engineering point of view. Most problems do not require a fine scientific or mathematical analysis but are rather questions to be decided by good judgment or practical common sense. The most difficult problems encountered are financial, legal and political, therefore, in this paper considerable attention is paid to the Iowa drainage law, facts learned from practical drainage men and to the organization and operation of the different financing systems for drainage"--page 1.

Preliminary Report On The Property Of The Ruby Copper Company, Colwell Arba Pierce

Professional Degree Theses

"The property of the Ruby Copper Company is located in Township 21 S., Range 15 E., near the southern end of the Santa Rita Mountains, Wrightson Mining District, Santa Cruz County, Arizona. It is reached by a good wagon road from the town of Pantagonia, which, because of its location on the Benson to Nogales Branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad, is the supply point for a large mining section--page 1.

Method And Cost Of Rock Excavation, Inlet Swamp Drainage District, Lee County, Illinois, Arch W. Naylor Jan 1916

Method And Cost Of Rock Excavation, Inlet Swamp Drainage District, Lee County, Illinois, Arch W. Naylor

Professional Degree Theses

"The Inlet Swamp Drainage District, comprising 32000 acres of rich muck land, lies in Lee County Illinois, between the Chicago and Northwestern Railway, the Illinois Central Railway and the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway. The District is fifteen miles long and from one to five miles wide. The watershed has approximately five times the area of the swamp, and in early days, as much as one-half the thirty two thousand acres was under water for practically the entire year. It was not unusual in the Spring, for the swamp to be under from two to five feet of water. …

Mill Test And Conclusion Leading To The Design Of An Addition To Florida Pebble Phosphate Concentrator, Norman L. Ohnsorg

Professional Degree Theses

"The fact that 30% to 50% of the phosphate mined in this district is lost as tailing due to an inadequate method of concentration has caused no small concern and many attempts have been to develop a method, of economic value, for saving the phosphate lost"--Existing Conditions of Milling, Page 1.

Notes On Mine Operations Of The American Zinc Company Of Tennessee, Homer Kent Sherry Jan 1916

Notes On Mine Operations Of The American Zinc Company Of Tennessee, Homer Kent Sherry

Professional Degree Theses

"The zinc ores mined at and near Mascot, Tennessee, are found in the upper part of the Knox dolomite which according to Keith was laid down in the middle Cambrian or Silurian age. This formation has a thickness of several thousand feet and is composed of layers of dolomite, limestone, sandstone, shale and some chert. The ore bearing portion at least is much folded with minor faulting and high brecciation. The axis of the folds lie Northeast by Southwest with the faulting in the same direction. The ore being mined is found on the Southeast dip in a fairly definite …
