Inverse Limits And Atomic Projections, Włodzimierz J. Charatonik, Faruq A. Mena, Robert Paul Roe

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We consider generalized inverse limits of continua with bonding functions Fn that have the projection of Graph (Fn) onto the second (first) factor atomic and images (pre-image) of points are zero-dimensional. For such bonding functions we show that under some easily verified conditions that if the first (all) factor space(s) has a certain property then the inverse limit space must have this property. The properties considered include hereditary decomposability, hereditary indecomposability, hereditary unicoherence, arc-likeness, and tree-likeness. We illustrate the theorems by several examples.

For a sequence of three correlation consistent basis sets,1 an algebraic expression can be obtained from Feller's three-parameter exponential function for the complete basis set (CBS) limit of the Hartree–Fock (HF) energy.2 During the derivation of a general three-point algebraic expression for the HF CBS limit,3 it was recognized that Eq. (2) in our original paper4 had the wrong sign in the last term in the denominator. The correct equation is as follows: (Formula Presented). (Table Presented).

Researchers are investigating the use of biomaterials with aligned guidance cues, like those provided by aligned electro spun fibers, to facilitate axonal growth across critical-length peripheral nerve defects. To enhance the regenerative outcomes further, these aligned fibers can be designed to provide local, sustained release of therapeutics. The drug fingolimod improved peripheral nerve regeneration in preclinical rodent models by stimulating a pro-regenerative Schwann cell phenotype and axonal growth. However, the systemic delivery of fingolimod for nerve repair can lead to adverse effects, so it is necessary to develop a means of providing sustained delivery of fingolimod local to the injury. …

Factorization Of High-Order-Harmonic-Generation Yields In Impurity-Doped Materials, Van Hung Hoang, Anh-Thu Le Aug 2020

Factorization Of High-Order-Harmonic-Generation Yields In Impurity-Doped Materials, Van Hung Hoang, Anh-Thu Le

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a theoretical investigation of high-order-harmonic generation (HHG) from impurity-doped materials. Based on the analysis of the exact numerical solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) for one-dimensional models, we demonstrate the factorization of HHG yields as a product of an electron wave packet and the recombination cross section, in analogy to HHG from atoms and molecules in the gas phase. Furthermore, we show that the quantitative rescattering model based on this factorization accurately reproduces the TDSE results. This opens up new possibilities to study impurities in materials using the available techniques from strong-field physics.

Structure And Function Of A Flavin-Dependent S-Monooxygenase From Garlic (Allium Sativum), Hannah Valentino, Ashley C. Campbell, Jonathan P. Schuermann, Nazneen Sultana, Han G. Nam, Sophie Leblanc, John J. Tanner, Pablo Sobrado

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Allicin is a component of the characteristic smell and flavor of garlic (Allium sativum). A flavin-containing monooxygenase (FMO) produced by A. sativum (AsFMO) was previously proposed to oxidize S-allyl-L-cysteine (SAC) to alliin, an allicin precursor. Here, we present a kinetic and structural characterization of AsFMO that suggests a possible contradiction to this proposal. Results of steady-state kinetic analyses revealed that AsFMO exhibited negligible activity with SAC; however, the enzyme was highly active with L-cysteine, N-acetyl-L-cysteine, and allyl mercaptan. We found that allyl mercaptan with NADPH was the preferred substrate-cofactor combination. Rapid-reaction kinetic analyses showed that NADPH binds tightly (KD of …

Energy Stable Numerical Schemes For Ternary Cahn-Hilliard System, Wenbin Chen, Cheng Wang, Shufen Wang, Xiaoming Wang, Steven M. Wise

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present and analyze a uniquely solvable and unconditionally energy stable numerical scheme for the ternary Cahn-Hilliard system, with a polynomial pattern nonlinear free energy expansion. One key difficulty is associated with presence of the three mass components, though a total mass constraint reduces this to two components. Another numerical challenge is to ensure the energy stability for the nonlinear energy functional in the mixed product form, which turns out to be non-convex, non-concave in the three-phase space. to overcome this subtle difficulty, we add a few auxiliary terms to make the combined energy functional convex in the three-phase space, …

In this paper, we propose a novel method for human activity recognition from a collection of outdoor mobility traces acquired through wearable devices. Our method exploits the regularities naturally present in human mobility patterns to construct syntactic models in the form of finite state automata, thanks to an approach known as grammatical inference. We also introduce a measure of similarity that accounts for the intrinsic hierarchical …

A Comparison Study Using Particle Swarm Optimization Inversion Algorithm For Gravity Anomaly Interpretation Due To A 2d Vertical Fault Structure, Neil Lennart Anderson, Khalid S. Essa, Mahmoud Elhussein

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new approach to the inversion of gravity data utilizing the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is used to model 2D vertical faults. The PSO algorithm is stochastic in nature; its development was motivated by the communal in-flight performance of birds looking for food. The birds are represented by particles (or models). Individual particles have a location and a velocity vector. The location vectors represent the parameter value. PSO is adjusted with random particles (models) and searches for targets by updating generations. Herein, the PSO algorithm is applied to three synthetic data sets (residual only with and without noise, residual …

The laser powder directed energy deposition process is a metal additive manufacturing technique, which can fabricate metal parts with high geometric and material flexibility. The unique feature of in-situ powder feeding makes it possible to customize the elemental composition using elemental powder mixture during the fabrication process. Thus, it can be potentially applied to synthesize industrial alloys with low cost, modify alloys with different powder mixtures, and design novel alloys with location-dependent properties using elemental powder blends as feedstocks. This paper provides an overview of using a laser powder directed energy deposition method to fabricate various types of alloys by …

We Investigate The Ground State Properties And The Nonequilibrium Dynamics Of A Lattice Trapped Bosonic Mixture Consisting Of An Impurity Species And A Finite-Sized Medium. For The Case Of One As Well As Two Impurities We Observe That, Depending On The Lattice Depth And The Interspecies Interaction Strength, A Transition From A Strongly Delocalized To A Localized Impurity Distribution Occurs. In The Latter Regime The Two Species Phase Separate, Thereby Forming A Particle-Hole Pair. For Two Impurities We Find That Below A Critical Lattice Depth They Are Delocalized Among Two Neighboring Outer Lattice Wells And Are Two-Body Correlated. This Transition …

Automated Detection And Characterization Of Esd-Induced Soft Failures Using Image-And Audio-Based Methods, Omid Hoseini Izadi, Javad Meiguni, Kenji Araki, Hideki Shumiya, David J. Pommerenke

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Audio-and image-based soft failure detection methods are developed, which can detect both severe failures (such as system hang) and subtle ones (such as glitch or a momentary disturbance on display). Incorporating the developed detection methods with a robotic ESD (electrostatic discharge) tester, we developed a fully automated soft failure investigation tool. Using this fully automated tool, we obtained failure-specific susceptibility maps for a camera (our target device). These susceptibility maps not only illustrated the sensitive locations of the device, but they also showed what type of soft failure is correlated with which locations.

In order to achieve high accuracy in measurements of the multiple probe antenna measurement system (MPAMS), an omnidirectional calibration antenna with a small gain variation in the horizontal polarization (named calibration loop antenna, in convention) is required. This article presents such an antenna design. The proposed calibration loop antenna consists of four arc-folded dipoles with dimensions of 52 mm x52 mm x 1 mm, balun structures for suppressing common mode current, and four parasitic strips for impedance matching on each of the top and bottom planes. The experimental results show that the proposed calibration loop antenna has a small gain …

In this article, impedance mismatch effects on the characteristics of common-mode (CM) electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) filters are studied using three-dimensional (3-D) full-wave numerical simulations. The CM EBG filters considered herein are designed using standard printed circuit board technology and contain either microstrip (MS) differential pairs running above the EBG plane, or strip line (SL) differential pairs running on one of the layers next to the EBG plane. First, the terminations are fixed at 50 Ω, and the effects of the differential line impedance variations on the EBG filter parameters are studied. Overall, the considered variations in the widths of the …

A Novel Data-Driven Analysis Method For Electromagnetic Radiations Based On Dynamic Mode Decomposition, Yanming Zhang, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electromagnetic radiations in complex electronic systems such as cell phones and computers are complex spatial oral correlations signals. Decomposing the electromagnetic radiation measured in the spatial oral domain is useful to gain physical insights into the process that generates radio frequency interference and the radiated spurious emission. In this article, a novel data-driven characterization method is proposed to analyze the electromagnetic radiations of both linear and nonlinear circuits. It employs the dynamic mode decomposition to simultaneously extract the temporal patterns and their corresponding dynamic modes. The temporal patterns show high-order harmonics generated by the nonlinearity. Then, these spatial oral coherent …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effect of vortex-induced mechanical stresses on the fluorescent properties of dye-containing poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(lactic acid) (PEG-b-PLA) block copolymer micelles has been investigated. PEG-b-PLA block copolymer micelles containing fluorescent dyes, 3,3′-dioctadecyloxacarbocyanine perchlorate (DiO) and/or 1,1′-dioctadecyl-3,3,3′,3′-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate (DiI), are prepared by a simple one-step procedure that involves the self-assembly of block copolymers and spontaneous incorporation of hydrophobic dyes into the core of the micelles. Upon vortexing, the micelle dispersion samples showed a decrease in fluorescence intensity in a rotational speed- and time-dependent manner. The results demonstrated that the vortexing can alter the fluorescent properties of the dye-containing PEG-b-PLA block copolymer micelle dispersion …

In a recent paper [C. Jin, S.-J. Wang, X. Zhao, S.-F. Zhao, and C. D. Lin, Phys. Rev. A 101, 013429 (2020)2469-992610.1103/PhysRevA.101.013429], we reported that the position and depth of the minima in the harmonic spectra of CO2 molecules can be dramatically manipulated by a slight change of the degree of alignment, thus providing a convenient method of shaping attosecond pulses which could lead to the splitting of a typical single attosecond burst into two. Here, we demonstrate that harmonic minima can also be dramatically controlled by changing the pump-probe angles to shape attosecond pulses. In the meanwhile, since …

On The Noisy Gradient Descent That Generalizes As Sgd, Jingfeng Wu, Wenqing Hu, Haoyi Xiong, Jun Huan, Vladimir Braverman, Zhanxing Zhu

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The gradient noise of SGD is considered to play a central role in the observed strong generalization abilities of deep learning. While past studies confirm that the magnitude and covariance structure of gradient noise are critical for regularization, it remains unclear whether or not the class of noise distributions is important. In this work we provide negative results by showing that noises in classes different from the SGD noise can also effectively regularize gradient descent. Our finding is based on a novel observation on the structure of the SGD noise: it is the multiplication of the gradient matrix and a …

Role Of Fluid Injection On Earthquake Size In Dynamic Rupture Simulations On Rough Faults, Jeremy Maurer, Eric M. Dunham, Paul Segall

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An outstanding question for induced seismicity is whether the volume of injected fluid and/or the spatial extent of the resulting pore pressure and stress perturbations limit rupture size. We simulate ruptures with and without injection‐induced pore pressure perturbations, using 2‐D dynamic rupture simulations on rough faults. Ruptures are not necessarily limited by pressure perturbations when (1) background shear stress is above a critical value, or (2) pore pressure is high. Both conditions depend on fault roughness. Stress heterogeneity from fault roughness primarily determines where ruptures stop; pore pressure has a secondary effect. Ruptures may be limited by fluid volume or …

Collective Modes At A Disordered Quantum Phase Transition, Martin Puschmann, Jack Crewse, Jose A. Hoyos, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the collective excitations, i.e., the Goldstone (phase) mode and the Higgs (amplitude) mode, near the superfluid-Mott glass quantum phase transition in a two-dimensional system of disordered bosons. Using Monte Carlo simulations as well as an inhomogeneous quantum mean-field theory with Gaussian fluctuations, we show that the Higgs mode is strongly localized for all energies, leading to a noncritical scalar response. In contrast, the lowest-energy Goldstone mode undergoes a striking delocalization transition as the system enters the superfluid phase. We discuss the generality of these findings and experimental consequences, and we point out potential relations to many-body localization.

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Intermolecular interactions in bulk water are dominated by pairwise and non-pairwise cooperative interactions. While accurate descriptions of the pairwise interactions are available and can be tested by precise low-frequency spectra of the water dimer up to 550 cm−1, the same does not hold for the three-body interactions. Here, we report the first comprehensive spectrum of the water trimer in the frequency region from 70 to 620 cm−1 using helium-nanodroplet isolation and free-electron lasers. By comparison to accompanying high-level quantum calculations, the experimentally observed intermolecular bands can be assigned. The transition frequencies of the degenerate translation, the degenerate in-plane and the …

Groundwater Storage Loss Associated With Land Subsidence In Western United States Mapped Using Machine Learning, Ryan G. Smith, Sayantan Majumdar

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Land subsidence caused by groundwater extraction has numerous negative consequences, such as loss of groundwater storage and damage to infrastructure. Understanding the magnitude, timing, and locations of land subsidence, as well as the mechanisms driving it, is crucial to implementing mitigation strategies, yet the complex, nonlinear processes causing subsidence are difficult to quantify. Physical models relating groundwater flux to aquifer compaction exist but require substantial hydrological data sets and are time consuming to calibrate. Land deformation can be measured using interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) and GPS, but the former is computationally expensive to estimate at scale and is subject …

Advancing our understanding of the connections among groundwater, food, and climate is critical to meet global food demands while optimizing water resources usage. However, our understanding of the linkages among groundwater, food, and climate is still limited. Here, we offer a Bayesian framework to simulate crop yield at a regional scale and quantify its relationships and associated uncertainty with climate, groundwater, agricultural, and energy-related variables. We implemented the framework in the rice-producing regions of Louisiana from 1960-2015. To build a parsimonious model, we used a probability-based variable selection approach to detect the key drivers of rice yield. Rice yield increased, …

In this paper, the optimal regulation of linear continuous-time systems with state and input delays is introduced by utilizing a quadratic cost function and state feedback. The Lyapunov-Krakovskii functional incorporating state and input delays is defined as a value function. Next, the Bellman type equation is formulated, and a delay Algebraic Riccati equation (DARE) over infinite time horizon is derived. By using the stationarity condition for the Bellman type equation, the optimal control input is obtained. It is demonstrated that the proposed optimal control input makes the closed-loop system asymptotically stable. Finally, simulation results confirm the theoretical claims by applying …

This paper proposes a decoupling capacitor placement optimization method based on the cavity model and Lagrange multiplier. The variable conditions associating with coordinates (x,y) of input impedance expression based on the cavity model are combined with the Lagrange multiplier method. The decoupling capacitor optimum placement within a defined area of the board can be found through the proposed analytical method. The example of finding an optimum location of the decoupling capacitor within a defined area of the power delivery network is exposed, the results are compared to the brute-force method to prove the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Distributed Adaptive State Estimation And Tracking Scheme For Nonlinear Systems Using Active Passive Sensor Networks, Akhilesh Raj, S. Jagannathan, Tansel Yucelen

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a novel adaptive neural network (NN) based distributed state estimation scheme for a heterogeneous sensor network (HSN), to estimate the state vector of an unknown nonlinear process/target by using sensed output when the target input remains unknown. The active nodes in the HSN can sense the target output based on the detection range. By using a connected graph, the active nodes will communicate their estimated state vector from their adaptive NN observer to other passive nodes in the neighborhood that cannot sense the target, so that they can estimate the target state vector. Next, a subset of …
