Pedagogy using gamification has recently received much attention as a way of enhancing student learning and retention. Additionally, academic institutions are making extensive use of online resources to expand teaching beyond the traditional classroom setting. Both academic institutions and companies utilize virtual teams to accomplish remote teamwork, particularly in a post-COVID environment. Despite the growing interest in incorporating gamification into teaching for business school courses, prior researchers have paid little attention to team-based gamification in the online learning environment. The purpose of this study is to examine if team members' perceived team cohesion influences their perceptions of flow. Also, we …

The focal plane camera is the core component of the Wide Field-of-view Cherenkov/fluorescence Telescope Array (WFCTA) of the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Because of the capability of working under moonlight without aging, silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) have been proven to be not only an alternative but also an improvement to conventional photomultiplier tubes (PMT) in this application. Eighteen SiPM-based cameras with square light funnels have been built for WFCTA. The telescopes have collected more than 100 million cosmic ray events and preliminary results indicate that these cameras are capable of working under moonlight. The characteristics of the light funnels …

As reversing the pathology of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is impossible, the diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which is considered as the precursor of AD, has become a more tractable goal. Because both brain structural and functional alterations have been observed in MCI patients, many multimodal fusion approaches have been proposed to classify MCI from normal controls (NC) in clinical studies. Given the complex relationships between brain structure and function, deep learning-based models can be helpful in revealing potential non-linear relationships buried in multimodal neuroimaging data. Meanwhile, RNA expression microarray profile can be a complementary feature in brain diseases analysis …

We report the discovery of an extended very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray source around the location of the middle-aged (207.8 kyr) pulsar PSR J0622+3749 with the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). The source is detected with a significance of 8.2σ for E>25 TeV assuming a Gaussian template. The best-fit location is (right ascension, declination) =(95.47°±0.11°,37.92°±0.09°), and the extension is 0.40°±0.07°. The energy spectrum can be described by a power-law spectrum with an index of -2.92±0.17stat±0.02sys. No clear extended multiwavelength counterpart of the LHAASO source has been found from the radio to sub-TeV bands. The LHAASO observations are consistent with the …

The rise of on-demand healthcare and the unprecedented growth of electronic health records has given rise to big data opportunities and data analysis using machine learning. The massive and disparate data management using conventional databases is incredibly challenging and expensive to manage. It often requires specialized analytical tools for developing advanced data-driven capabilities and performing data analytics. This paper explores the capability of an open-source framework 'Apache Spark' capable of processing large amounts of data on clusters of nodes to analyze Big data and integrate technologies to provide decision support systems in healthcare settings. Next, we propose machine learning models …

Gravitational waves enable tests of general relativity in the highly dynamical and strong-field regime. Using events detected by LIGO-Virgo up to 1 October 2019, we evaluate the consistency of the data with predictions from the theory. We first establish that residuals from the best-fit waveform are consistent with detector noise, and that the low- and high-frequency parts of the signals are in agreement. We then consider parametrized modifications to the waveform by varying post-Newtonian and phenomenological coefficients, improving past constraints by factors of ∼2; we also find consistency with Kerr black holes when we specifically target signatures of the spin-induced …

The extension of the cosmic-ray spectrum beyond 1 petaelectronvolt (PeV; 1015 electronvolts) indicates the existence of the so-called PeVatrons—cosmic-ray factories that accelerate particles to PeV energies. We need to locate and identify such objects to find the origin of Galactic cosmic rays1. The principal signature of both electron and proton PeVatrons is ultrahigh energy (exceeding 100 TeV) γ radiation. Evidence of the presence of a proton PeVatron has been found in the Galactic Centre, according to the detection of a hard-spectrum radiation extending to 0.04 PeV (ref. 2). Although γ-rays with energies slightly higher than 0.1 …

Efficient, Positive, And Energy Stable Schemes For Multi-D Poisson–Nernst–Planck Systems, Hailiang Liu, Wumaier Maimaitiyiming

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we design, analyze, and numerically validate positive and energy-dissipating schemes for solving the time-dependent multi-dimensional system of Poisson–Nernst–Planck equations, which has found much use in the modeling of biological membrane channels and semiconductor devices. The semi-implicit time discretization based on a reformulation of the system gives a well-posed elliptic system, which is shown to preserve solution positivity for arbitrary time steps. The first order (in time) fully discrete scheme is shown to preserve solution positivity and mass conservation unconditionally, and energy dissipation with only a mild O (1) time step restriction. The scheme is also shown to …

Teleseismic P-Wave Attenuation Beneath The Southeastern United States, Ashutosh Shrivastava, Kelly H. Liu, Stephen S. Gao

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Seismic attenuation is an important parameter for characterizing subsurface morphology and thermal structure. In this study, we use P-wave amplitude spectra from 588 teleseismic events recorded by 477 broadband seismic stations in the southeastern United States to examine the spatial variations of seismic attenuation in the crust and upper mantle. The resulting seismic attenuation parameter (∆t*) measurements obtained using the spectral ratio technique reveal a zone of relatively low attenuation in the Gulf of Mexico Coastal Plain and the southwestern terminus of the Piedmont province. Spatial coherency analysis of the ∆t* observations suggests that the center of the low attenuation …

Sensitivity-Enhanced Microwave-Photonic Optical Fiber Interferometry Based On The Vernier Effect, Chen Zhu, Jie Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes optical carrier microwave interferometry (OCMI)-based optical fiber interferometers for sensing applications with improved measurement sensitivity with the assistance of the Vernier effect. Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPIs) are employed in the proof of concept. A single-FPI-OCMI system is first demonstrated for measurements of variations of temperatures by tracking the spectral shift of the interferogram in microwave domain. By cascading two FPIs with slightly different optical lengths, the Vernier effect is generated in the magnitude spectrum of the system with a typical amplitude-modulated signal. By tracking the shift of the envelope signal, temperature measurements are experimentally demonstrated with greatly enhanced …

Rapid growth in scientific data and a widening gap between computational speed and I/O bandwidth make it increasingly infeasible to store and share all data produced by scientific simulations. Instead, we need methods for reducing data volumes: ideally, methods that can scale data volumes adaptively so as to enable negotiation of performance and fidelity tradeoffs in different situations. Multigrid-based hierarchical data representations hold promise as a solution to this problem, allowing for flexible conversion between different fidelities so that, for example, data can be created at high fidelity and then transferred or stored at lower fidelity via logically simple and …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Today’s high-performance computing (HPC) applications are producing vast volumes of data, which are challenging to store and transfer efficiently during the execution, such that data compression is becoming a critical technique to mitigate the storage burden and data movement cost. Huffman coding is arguably the most efficient Entropy coding algorithm in information theory, such that it could be found as a fundamental step in many modern compression algorithms such as DEFLATE. On the other hand, today’s HPC applications are more and more relying on the accelerators such as GPU on supercomputers, while Huffman encoding suffers from low throughput on GPUs, …

We report on the population of 47 compact binary mergers detected with a false-alarm rate of < 1 yr-1 in the second LIGO-Virgo Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog. We observe several characteristics of the merging binary black hole (BBH) population not discernible until now. First, the primary mass spectrum contains structure beyond a power law with a sharp high-mass cutoff; it is more consistent with a broken power law with a break at 39.7+20.3-9.1 M⊙ or a power law with a Gaussian feature peaking at 33.1+4.0-5.6 M⊙ (90% credible interval). While the primary mass distribution must extend to …

Copper Selenide As Multifunctional Non-Enzymatic Glucose And Dopamine Sensor, Harish Singh, Jillian Bernabe, Justin Chern, Manashi Nath

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cu2Se, synthesized through one-pot hydrothermal synthesis, was identified as highly efficient bifunctional sensor for co-detection of glucose and dopamine with high selectivity. As-synthesized copper selenide could electro-oxidize glucose and dopamine at different applied potentials. Glucose oxidation was observed at 0.35 V while dopamine oxidized at 0.2 V. This copper selenide-based non-enzymatic sensor showed high sensitivity for both glucose (15.341 mA mM-1 cm-2) and dopamine (12.43 μA μM-1 cm-2) with low limit of detection (0.26 μM and 84 nM). Such high sensitivity and low LOD makes this sensor attractive for possible detection of …

Biomass burning emits vapors and aerosols into the atmosphere that can rapidly evolve as smoke plumes travel downwind and dilute, affecting climate- and health-relevant properties of the smoke. To date, theory has been unable to explain observed variability in smoke evolution. Here, we use observational data from the Biomass Burning Observation Project (BBOP) field campaign and show that initial smoke organic aerosol mass concentrations can help predict changes in smoke aerosol aging markers, number concentration, and number mean diameter between 40-262 nm. Because initial field measurements of plumes are generally > 10 min downwind, smaller plumes will have already undergone substantial …

Circular Dichroism In Atomic Resonance-Enhanced Few-Photon Ionization, A. H. N. C. De Silva, T. Moon, Daniel Fischer, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate few-photon ionization of lithium atoms prepared in the polarized 2p(mℓ = +1) state when subjected to femtosecond light pulses with left- or right-handed circular polarization at wavelengths between 665 and 920 nm. We consider whether ionization proceeds more favorably for the electric field co- or counter-rotating with the initial electronic current density. Strong asymmetries are found and quantitatively analyzed in terms of "circular dichroism"(CD). While the intensity dependence of the measured CD values is rather weak throughout the investigated regime, a very strong sensitivity on the center wavelength of the incoming radiation is observed. While the co-rotating …

Temperature-Dependent Rotationally Inelastic Collisions Of Ohˉ And He, Eric S. Endres, Steve Ndengué, Olga Lakhmanskaya, Seunghyun Lee, Francesco A. Gianturco, Richard Dawes, Roland Wester

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have studied the fundamental rotational relaxation and excitation collision of OHˉJ = 0 ↔ 1 with helium at different collision energies. Using state-selected photodetachment in a cryogenic ion trap, the collisional excitation of the first excited rotational state of OHˉ has been investigated and absolute inelastic collision rate coefficients have been extracted for collision temperatures between 20 and 35 K. The rates are compared with accurate quantum scattering calculations for three different potential-energy surfaces. Good agreement is found within the experimental accuracy, but the experimental trend of increasing collision rates with temperature is only in part reflected in the …

The power quality of the Electrical Power System (EPS) is greatly affected by electrical harmonics. Hence, accurate and proper estimation of electrical harmonics is essential to design appropriate filters for mitigation of harmonics and their associated effects on the power quality of EPS. This paper presents a novel statistical (Least Square) and meta-heuristic (Grey wolf optimizer) based hybrid technique for accurate detection and estimation of electrical harmonics with minimum computational time. The non-linear part (phase and frequency) of harmonics is estimated using GWO, while the linear part (amplitude) is estimated using the LS method. Furthermore, harmonics having transients are also …

Heavy Oil And Vapex Process: A Brief Review, Vijitha Mohan, Parthasakha Neogi, Baojun Bai

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Heavy oil recovery requires either heat or solvent assistance to reduce its high viscosity first and then the less viscous oil can be recovered. Processes that use vapor assisted petroleum extraction (VAPEX) utilize vaporized solvent. Solvent vapors are introduced through a top injection well to induce viscosity reduction and the less viscous oil is collected at the bottom production well. It is noteworthy, that the solvent itself when recovered, can be seen as an integral part of oil. Exact molecular weight and chemistry of heavy oil is uncertain making analysis of thermodynamic properties difficult, however this is overcome by making …

Encoding Time-Series Ground Motions As Images For Convolutional Neural Networks-Based Seismic Damage Evaluation, Xinzhe Yuan, Dustin Tanksley, Pu Jiao, Liujun Li, Genda Chen, Donald C. Wunsch

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Traditional methods for seismic damage evaluation require manual extractions of intensity measures (IMs) to properly represent the record-to-record variation of ground motions. Contemporary methods such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for time series classification and seismic damage evaluation face a challenge in training due to a huge task of ground-motion image encoding. Presently, no consensus has been reached on the understanding of the most suitable encoding technique and image size (width × height × channel) for CNN-based seismic damage evaluation. In this study, we propose and develop a new image encoding technique based on time-series segmentation (TS) to transform acceleration …

Dynamic Topography Of The St. Francois Mountains, Joshua Carpenter Apr 2021

Dynamic Topography Of The St. Francois Mountains, Joshua Carpenter

Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T

The purpose of this research project was to search for evidence of relict topographic surfaces in the St. Francois Mountains that preserve a history of regional and/or global forces. To accomplish this, topographic cross-sections were taken in Google Earth to examine changes in the region's topography with focus towards the following features: sub-horizontal surfaces, knickpoints, and valley floors. Elevation data was then collected and plotted in Excel. This revealed sub-horizontal surfaces between elevations of ~1780-1545 ft; knickpoints between ~1700-900 ft; and valley floors at ~1470-1350 ft. and ~1200-900 ft. The sub-horizontal surfaces are interpreted as relict peneplains preserved during periods …

A Man Out West Is A Man, Nikola Andric

Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T

The goal of this research is to analyze who the cowboys were and show how the standard set for the cowboy in novels remained consistent during the period between 1902 and 1953. The presentation allows readers to think of their idea of a cowboy and then compare it with the idea of the cowboy drawn from the books used in the research. It is a great opportunity to find out who the perfect cowboy is, what cowboys' relationships with their horses look like, what is considered good, and what is considered evil during those fifty years. Above all, the most …

Small-Scale Wind Power Prediction, Nathan Skelton Apr 2021

Small-Scale Wind Power Prediction, Nathan Skelton

Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T

This study is focused on the development of viable power generation modeling for small scale wind power installations. Armed with a viable model, businesses and individuals would have another option to reliably power small-scale buildings or installations. This study defines small-scale wind power turbines as those installed on buildings, or otherwise operating under 30 meters (~100 feet). Both of these installation environments provide inconsistent wind speeds, among other properties, that most wind power models do not address. Through the development of a sample wind turbine and accompanying weather station, multiple methods of prediction have been implemented with varying degrees of …

Tempered Fbm With Reflecting Walls, Zachary Miller Apr 2021

Tempered Fbm With Reflecting Walls, Zachary Miller

Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T

Fractional Brownian Motion (FBM) is a Gaussian stochastic process with long-range correlations and a paradigmatic model for anomalous diffusion. For FBM confined by reflecting boundaries, recent work [1] demonstrated unusual accumulation and depletion of particles close to the walls. In many applications of FBM to physics, chemistry, and beyond, the long-range correlations are cut off (tempered) beyond a certain time scale [2]. Here, we study the behavior of tempered FMB in the presence of reflecting walls. More specifically, we analyze the probability density of tempered FBM on a one-dimensional interval between two reflecting wall.

Water Splitting By Mixed Chalcogenide Catalysts, Isabella Feltenstein Apr 2021

Water Splitting By Mixed Chalcogenide Catalysts, Isabella Feltenstein

Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T

The depleting supply of fossil fuels has led to deeper investigation of water-splitting as a sustainable energy source. Specifically, using transition metal chalcogenides to catalyze the water-splitting reaction through oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions. While the decreasing electronegativity of the chalcogenide group increases their activity, it also decreases their stability, leading to the investigation of mixed anion chalcogenides in order to keep both the stability and activity high. This research will further the understanding and efficiency of water-splitting for energy storage and inspire more research in the future. In these experiments, cobalt telluroselenide (Cox-Tey-Sez) and nickel telluroselenide (Nix-Tey-Sez) catalysts were …

Thermal Modeling Of Li-Ion Batteries Using Sp+3d Model, Derrick Barger Apr 2021

Thermal Modeling Of Li-Ion Batteries Using Sp+3d Model, Derrick Barger

Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T

An ideal battery model must gather sufficient electrochemical data about the system while remaining being computationally efficient. To prevent failure from thermal runaway, understanding the thermal characteristics of a battery is essential.

To achieve this, we have developed a single particle (SP) model, a simplified but accurate approach to battery modeling, and compared this to a previously designed 3D model. After validating the battery electrochemistry, equations were introduced to calculate the heat generation with a coupled 3D heat transfer component to provide data on the cell temperature. This same model was used to simulate a multi-cell pack.

The results indicate …

Chemically Resolved Nuclear Spin Relaxation, Megan Sly Apr 2021

Chemically Resolved Nuclear Spin Relaxation, Megan Sly

Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T

In Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy, the excitation of nuclear spins is used to generate spectra of radiofrequency resonance signals. The signal frequencies are typically used to determine the structure of chemical compounds, while the relaxation of the spins to thermodynamic equilibrium provides useful information about the molecular vicinity of a material. When a chemical compound occurs in different molecular environments, a single resonance signal can have multiple relaxation times. To quantify how much material is in how many different environments, a multi-exponential analysis was developed resolving resonance signals and relaxation times in two-dimensional contour plots. Samples of known resonance …
