The University Of Missouri, A Centennial History 1839-1939, Jonas Viles Jan 1939

The University Of Missouri, A Centennial History 1839-1939, Jonas Viles

History of the University

The School of Mines and Metallurgy of the University of Missouri is unique among the various functional divisions of the parent institution at Columbia. Although governed by the same board of curators as manages the affairs of the University as a whole, it occupies a separate campus in another section of the state. The location of the school at Rolla, in Phelps county, has not, of course, in itself, given any particular or specific direction to the development of the institution; but it has made the story of the growth of the school necessarily a different one from what it …

Design Study Of A Three Span Continuous Tied-Arch Bridge, George Perry Steen Jan 1939

Design Study Of A Three Span Continuous Tied-Arch Bridge, George Perry Steen

Masters Theses

"In this study of the continuous tied-arch bridge, having one main span and two equal side-spans, the following items are endeavored: (1) To set up the total internal work equations and to find the values of the unknown forces or redundants. (2) To compute to maximum moments for design and to complete the design of the super-structure for one bridge. Details, such as the gusset plates, rivets, connection angles, etc., are not designed; the effect of such being allowed in the design for dead load as a certain per cent for details. (3) To set up hypothetical conditions for other …

The Reactions Of Acid Halides With Sodium, Magnesium, Zinc And Amalgams, William H. Webb Jan 1939

The Reactions Of Acid Halides With Sodium, Magnesium, Zinc And Amalgams, William H. Webb

Masters Theses

"The reactions of acid halides with metals are of interest because there seems to be a possibility of abstracting the halogens from two molecules of the halide, and thereby bringing about a coupling reaction; or the formation of an intermediate organo-metallic compound which would react with another molecule of the acid halide. The result of these reactions should be the formation of diacetyl and acetyl chloride and of dibenzoyl or benzil from benzoyl chloride. This procedure would be far better than the usual procedures for the preparation of these compounds...The results reported in the literature by different workers, on the …

Application Of Small-Scale, Movable-Bed River Models To Channel Improvement Studies Of The Middle Mississippi River, Eugene H. Woodman Jan 1938

Application Of Small-Scale, Movable-Bed River Models To Channel Improvement Studies Of The Middle Mississippi River, Eugene H. Woodman

Professional Degree Theses

"This paper deals primarily with the use of small-scale models in the study of plans for improving the channel for navigation in several reaches of the Middle Mississippi River. However, it was considered expedient to include a discussion of hydraulic model experimentation in general before dealing with specific cases, in order that the reader might obtain the greatest possible satisfaction from the discussion.

The first part of this paper includes: a discussion of the theory of models, wherein the value and utility of models are demonstrated; the application of models to hydraulic problems, including the requirements for a model to …

Oil And Gas Resources, Jackson County, Missouri, Joseph Robinson Clair Jan 1938

Oil And Gas Resources, Jackson County, Missouri, Joseph Robinson Clair

Masters Theses

"The oil and gas production in Jackson County, though rather small, is nevertheless of considerable economic importance. A portion of the county has been rather thoroughly developed but the remainder has had little prospecting. In order to aid further development in the region the Missouri Geological Survey engaged in the mapping of all the known wells in the county as a basis for preparing a structural contour map of the area. In addition, a member of the Survey staff is stationed permanently in Kansas City to give assistance to the operators in the region and to collect the logs of …

The Catalytic Vapor-Phase Hydrolysis Of Benzene And Toluene, Clemens Raebel Maise Jan 1938

The Catalytic Vapor-Phase Hydrolysis Of Benzene And Toluene, Clemens Raebel Maise

Masters Theses

"The vapor-phase synthesis of organic compounds represents a new field of study which has attracted the attention of investigators only within recent years. However, wide interest is apparent in this field and several processes of commercial importance have already been developed. Hydrolysis is perhaps the newest of all the types of vapor-phase synthesis; the literature consists of little more than a few patents...The vapor-phase hydrolysis of benzene and toluene, therefore, presented an interesting possibility. These two hydrocarbons are considered very stable toward water in the liquid-phase. The purpose of this investigation was to determine to what extent their stability toward …

Petrographic Analyses Of The Chepultepec Sandstones Of The Norris Reservoir Region, Tennessee, Chilton Eaton Prouty Jan 1938

Petrographic Analyses Of The Chepultepec Sandstones Of The Norris Reservoir Region, Tennessee, Chilton Eaton Prouty

Masters Theses

"The Norris Reservoir is located in northeastern Tennessee, in the Appalachian Valley. It includes all or portions of Anderson, Campbell, Claiborne, Granger, Knox, and Union counties. The area is shown by the map of Pate I. It is approximately thirty-five miles long in a northeast-southwest direction and about eighteen to twenty miles wide, in a northwest-southeast direction. The area is bounded on the northwest by the Cumberland escarpment and on the southeast by Clinch Mountain. The other boundaries are arbitrarily drawn near the town of Clinton to the southwest and near Tazewell to the northeast"--Introduction. Location and Nature of the …

A Study Of Methods For The Recovery Of Silver, Bromine, Iodine, And Sodium Thiosulfate From Used Photographic Fixing Baths, Leroy Agustave Bay Jan 1937

A Study Of Methods For The Recovery Of Silver, Bromine, Iodine, And Sodium Thiosulfate From Used Photographic Fixing Baths, Leroy Agustave Bay

Masters Theses

"Sodium thiosulfate was one of the pioneer reagents used in photography, and is still the most important reagent used in photographic fixing. The solubility of the silver halides in an excess of sodium thiosulfate makes it important as a reagent for removing the undeveloped silver halides from the film. The life of a fixing bath is controlled by the halogen content. As the ratio of halogens to sodium thiosulfate is increased, the time required for fixing is also increased until the ratio reaches such a point that fogging of the film results. Most of the solutions are discarded long before …

Pyrochemical Changes In Missouri Halloysite, Frank Joseph Zvanut Jan 1937

Pyrochemical Changes In Missouri Halloysite, Frank Joseph Zvanut

Doctoral Dissertations

"For centuries it has been known that the application of heat to a clay or a clay body produces changes that make it an entirely different substance from the original raw clay. Ever since the earliest civilizations produced crude building brick by baking formed clay bodies in the sun's rays, mankind has been speculating on the nature of the changes that convert soft, friable, plastic clays into hard, strong, non-plastic, rock-like masses. It has been only within the last two decades, however, that progress has been made in the solution of problems dealing with the resultant products in fired clay …

The U.S.G.S. Topographic Map: Its Value And Method Of Construction, Daniel Kennedy Jan 1935

The U.S.G.S. Topographic Map: Its Value And Method Of Construction, Daniel Kennedy

Professional Degree Theses

"Topographic maps, which differ from the base map in that they show not only relative distance and direction but also the accurate shape of the earths surface, are not new, but represent the constant improvement in mans efforts to reproduce on paper all that he sees and knows of regions of the globe.

While history records the first maps known to man as being made by the Babylonians on clay tablets centuries before Christ, the first relief map was made by the Ninth Inca who died in the year 1191. The present method of showing relief by contours was employed …
