Occupational And Environmental Factors Influencing Morale Of United States Federal Wildland Firefighters, Rachel M. Granberg, Ting Shen, Seth W. Pearson, Robin M. Verble
Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Background. Wildland firefighters have physically and psychologically demanding jobs that can result in social, economic and health-related stress. Previous studies have examined the physiological and physical effects of a career in wildland fire, but fewer studies have addressed psychological effects, and to date, none have directly analyzed the hiring and work experiences of wildland firefighters. Aims. We surveyed work experiences, health and well-being, and morale of wildland firefighters, explored factors that can improve recruitment and retention, and summarized broad patterns. Methods. We conducted a voluntary anonymous survey of 708 federal wildland firefighters via an online platform over 2 months in …

Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) was applied to gain insights into the electronic and vibrational spectroscopic properties of an important electron transport mediator, methyl viologen (MV2+). an organic dication, MV2+ has numerous applications in electrochemistry that include energy conversion and storage, environmental remediation, and chemical sensing and electrosynthesis. MV2+ is easily reduced by a single electron transfer to form a radical cation species (MV•+), which has an intense UV–visible absorption near 600 nm. the redox properties of the MV2+/MV•+ couple and light-sensitivity of MV•+ have made the system appealing for photo-electrochemical energy conversion (e.g., solar hydrogen generation from water) and …

In Quantum Chaotic Systems, The Spectral Form Factor (SFF), Defined As The Fourier Transform Of Two-Level Spectral Correlation Function, Is Known To Follow Random Matrix Theory (RMT), Namely A 'ramp' Followed By A 'plateau' In Late Times. Recently, A Generic Early-Time Deviation From RMT, So-Called The 'bump', Was Shown To Exist In Random Quantum Circuits As Toy Models For Many-Body Quantum Systems. We Demonstrate The Existence Of 'bump-Ramp-Plateau' Behavior In The SFF For A Number Of Paradigmatic And Stroboscopically-Driven 1D Cold-Atom Models: Spinless And Spin-1/2 Bose-Hubbard Models, And Nonintegrable Spin-1 Condensate With Contact Or Dipolar Interactions. Removal of quartz from iron ore was accomplished industrially via an anionic reverse flotation technique. However, in that kind of flotation, the interaction of the flotation reagents with the components of the feed sample makes the flotation a complicated system. Thus, the selection and optimization of regent dosages at various temperatures were performed using a uniform experimental design to estimate the optimum separation efficiency. Besides, the produced data as well as the reagent system were mathematically modeled at different flotation temperatures, and the graphical user interface GUI of MATLAB was conducted. The advantage of this procedure is that the user …

The Galactic Halo is a key target for indirect dark matter detection. The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory is a high-energy (∼300 GeV to >100 TeV) gamma-ray detector located in central Mexico. HAWC operates via the water Cherenkov technique and has both a wide field of view of ∼ 2 sr and a >95% duty cycle, making it ideal for analyses of highly extended sources. We made use of these properties of HAWC, and a new background-estimation technique optimized for extended sources to probe a large region of the Galactic Halo for dark matter signals. With this approach, we set …

For security, economic, and efficiency reasons, many businesses supply mobile devices to employees to use both in the workplace and remotely, accompanied by policies governing their appropriate use. Extant research has shown that work-issued mobile devices can disrupt employees' perceptions of work-life balance (WLB) and, indeed, WLB can impact employees' job satisfaction and performance. The global COVID-19 pandemic meant that more employees than usual performed their work remotely, but this situation may have not fit the preferred WLB for some. Did this encroachment mean that appropriate use policies were forgotten? We conducted two rounds of surveys, one pre-pandemic and the …

Space-Time-Frequency Characterization In Electromagnetic Near-Field Scanning: A Data-Driven Approach, Yanming Zhang, Lijun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Near-field scanning has become a widely used tool for diagnosing electromagnetic compatibility and electromagnetic interference issues. However, the transient signal of the device under test often contains multiple frequency bands and exhibits nonstationarity, which poses a challenge for near-field scanning analysis. To address this issue, this article presents a method for analyzing time-resolved near-field radiation based on multiresolution dynamic mode decomposition (MRDMD). The MRDMD approach recursively and hierarchically applies the traditional dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) method. The distribution of DMD eigenvalues determines the slow and fast modes in each level's decomposition, where the slow modes are preserved, and the fast …

In order to improve the heat dissipation capability of the 5G base station, the electromagnetic and thermal performances of a base station antenna array are co-designed by adopting all-metal electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structures. The geometrical dimension of the EBG structure is determined through balancing the electromagnetic and thermal performances of the antenna array. The operating frequency band (voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) < 1.5) of the proposed antenna array can cover 3.4-3.8 GHz. Its realized gains, isolation, cross-polarized discrimination ratio, and half-power beamwidth are satisfactory compared with other state-of-the-art base station antennas. Most importantly, more than 9 C temperature reduction can be observed when comparing the heat dissipation capability of the proposed antenna array with the reference antenna array.

Bio electrocatalytic synthesis is the conversion of electrical energy into value-added products using biocatalysts. These methods merge the specificity and selectivity of biocatalysis and energy-related electrocatalysis to address challenges in the sustainable synthesis of pharmaceuticals, commodity chemicals, fuels, feedstocks and fertilizers. However, the specialized experimental setups and domain knowledge for bio electrocatalysis pose a significant barrier to adoption. This review introduces key concepts of bioelectrosynthetic systems. We provide a tutorial on the methods of biocatalyst utilization, the setup of bioelectrosynthetic cells, and the analytical methods for assessing bio electrocatalysts. Key applications of bio electrosynthesis in ammonia production and small-molecule synthesis …

In dynamic networks, where continuous topological changes are prevalent, it becomes paramount to find and update different graph properties without the computational burden of recalculating from the ground up. However finding or updating a multi-objective shortest path (MOSP) in such a network is challenging, as it involves simultaneously optimizing multiple (conflicting) objectives. In light of this, our paper focuses on shortest path search and proposes parallel algorithms tailored specifically for large incremental graphs. We first present an efficient algorithm that updates the single-objective shortest path (SOSP) whenever a new set of edges are introduced. Leveraging this SOSP update algorithm, we …

Multi-messenger astrophysics combines observations from multiple instruments to study transient astrophysical phenomena, many occurring at seconds-level timescales. To identify and precisely localize these events in the sky, current systems often search through extensive sensor data, requiring resource-intensive computation to achieve results on the timescale of the events themselves. We seek to reduce computational requirements so as to perform real-time event localization with limited computational resources suitable for an orbital platform. This work studies the performance of a computational pipeline for real-time gamma-ray burst (GRB) detection and localization aboard the Antarctic Demonstrator for the Advanced Particle-astro-physics Telescope (ADAPT), a balloon-borne prototype …

Additive manufacturing (AM) simulations are effective for materials that are well characterized and published; however, for newer or proprietary materials, they cannot provide accurate results due to the lack of knowledge of the material properties. This work demonstrates the process of the application of mathematical search algorithms to develop an optimized material dataset which results in accurate simulations for the laser directed energy deposition (DED) process. This was performed by first using a well-characterized material, Ti-64, to show the error in the predicted melt pool was accurate, and the error was found to be less than two resolution steps. Then, …

Oxidative Stress In Health And Disease, V. Prakash Reddy
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Oxidative stress, resulting from the excessive intracellular accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), reactive nitrogen species (RNS), and other free radical species, contributes to the onset and progression of various diseases, including diabetes, obesity, diabetic nephropathy, diabetic neuropathy, and neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and Parkinson's disease (PD). Oxidative stress is also implicated in cardiovascular disease and cancer. Exacerbated oxidative stress leads to the accelerated formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), a complex mixture of crosslinked proteins and protein modifications. Relatively high levels of AGEs are generated in diabetes, obesity, AD, and other …

In the past detonation nanodiamonds (DNDs), sized 3–5 nm, have been praised for their colloidal stability in aqueous media, thereby attracting vast interest in a wide range of applications including nanomedicine. More recent studies have challenged the consensus that DNDs are monodispersed after their fabrication process, with their aggregate formation dynamics poorly understood. Here we reveal that DNDs in aqueous solution, regardless of their post-synthesis de-agglomeration and purification methods, exhibit hierarchical aggregation structures consisting of chain-like and cluster aggregate morphologies. With a novel characterization approach combining machine learning with direct cryo-transmission electron microscopy and with X-ray scattering and vibrational spectroscopy, …

Route Planning Systems (RPS) are a core component of autonomous personal transport systems essential for safe and efficient navigation of dynamic urban environments with the support of edge-based smart city infrastructure, but they also raise concerns about user route privacy in the context of both privately owned and commercial vehicles. Numerous high-profile data breaches in recent years have fortunately motivated research on privacy preserving RPS, but most of them are rendered impractical by greatly increased communication and processing overhead. We address this by proposing an approach called Hierarchical Privacy-Preserving Route Planning (HPRoP), which divides and distributes the route-planning task across …

Fluidized bed reactors are essential in a wide range of industrial applications, encompassing processes such as Fischer–Tropsch synthesis and catalytic cracking. The optimization of performance and reduction in energy consumption in these reactors necessitate the use of efficient heat transfer mechanisms. The present work examines the considerable impact of tube end geometries, superficial gas velocity, and radial position on heat transfer coefficients within fluidized bed reactors. It was found that the tapered tube end configurations have been empirically proven to improve energy efficiency in fluidized bed reactors significantly. For example, at a superficial gas velocity of 0.4 m/s, the tapered …

Limestone calcined clay cement (LC3) is a sustainable alternative to ordinary Portland cement, capable of reducing the binder's carbon footprint by 40% while satisfying all key performance metrics. The inherent compositional heterogeneity in select components of LC3, combined with their convoluted chemical interactions, poses challenges to conventional analytical models when predicting mechanical properties. Although some studies have employed machine learning (ML) to predict the mechanical properties of LC3, many have overlooked the pivotal role of feature selection. Proper feature selection not only refines and simplifies the structure of ML models but also enhances these models' prediction performance and interpretability. This …

Convolutional neural networks (CNN) have demonstrated good accuracy and speed in spatially registering high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) images. However, some functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) images, e.g., those acquired from arterial spin labeling (ASL) perfusion fMRI, are of intrinsically low SNR and therefore the quality of registering ASL images using CNN is not clear. In this work, we aimed to explore the feasibility of a CNN-based affine registration network (ARN) for registration of low-SNR three-dimensional ASL perfusion image time series and compare its performance with that from the state-of-the-art statistical parametric mapping (SPM) algorithm. Depression is a common mental health disorder that can cause consequential symptoms with continuously depressed mood that leads to emotional distress. One category of depression is Concealed Depression, where patients intentionally or unintentionally hide their genuine emotions through exterior optimism, thereby complicating and delaying diagnosis and treatment and leading to unexpected suicides. In this article, we propose to diagnose concealed depression by using facial micro-expressions (FMEs) to detect and recognize underlying true emotions. However, the extremely low intensity and subtle nature of FMEs make their recognition a tough task. We propose a facial landmark-based Region-of-Interest (ROI) approach to address the …

In this article, copper-based chalcogenides (Cu2 X, X= O, S, Se, and Te) have been systematically studied to examine the effect of decreasing anion electronegativity and increasing covalency on the electrocatalytic performance. Among the copper chalcogenides, Cu2Te has the highest oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity and can sustain high current density of 10 and 50 mA cm−2 for 12 h. The difference in intrinsic catalytic activity of these chalcogenide surfaces have been also probed through density functional theory calculations, which …
