Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This Paper Shows that, under Certain Weak Restrictions, a Two-Dimensional Discrete Markov Process Can Be Represented Either "Causally" by a One-Sided Difference Equation, or "Non causally" by a Multiple-Sided Difference Equation. the Former Representation is Pertinent to the Analysis of Image Coders and Processors that Operate Sequentially on Scanned Image Data. the Latter Representation is Applicable to the Analysis of Block Coders and Processors. the General Relation between the Two Representations is Given and the Specialized Forms Resulting under Separable Scene Covariance Studied. An Examination Of The Adaptive Random Search Technique, M. W. Heuckroth, J. L. Gaddy, L. D. Gaines
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Random search procedures have recently been successfully applied to the optimization of a variety of chemical engineering problems, including optimization of chemical processes by flow sheet simulation. These procedures represent the independent variables as random variables described by probability distributions. The adaptive random search procedure centers the distribution for each variable about the best search point found and examines this region for a better point. Thus, this technique has the ability of continuously moving the search region toward the optimum, which is particularly advantageous in following constraints. This study examines the efficiency of the adaptive random search technique as applied …
Mass Transfer To Drops Moving Through Power Law Fluids In The Intermediate Reynolds Number Region, Robert M. Wellek, Türker Gürkan
Mass Transfer To Drops Moving Through Power Law Fluids In The Intermediate Reynolds Number Region, Robert M. Wellek, Türker Gürkan
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The mass transfer rate to fluid spheres is calculated for power law and Newtonian fluids by using the intermediate Reynolds number stream functions of Nakano and Tien (1970) and Yamaguchi et al. (1974), respectively. The Sh increases with increases in Re and Pe and decreases in n. Better results are obtained with Nakano and Tien's functions when Re > 10 and with Yamaguchi's functions when Re < 10. Copyright © 1976 American Institute of Chemical Engineers

Mass Transfer In Dispersed And Continous Phases For Creeping Flow Of Fluid Spheres Through Power Law Fluids, Türker Gürkan, Robert M. Wellek
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The diffusion equation was numerically solved by an implicit finite-difference method for the purpose of calculating the continuous phase Sherwood number, Sh, for mass transfer from an internally circulating Newtonian droplet traveling through a non-Newtonian power-law-type continuous phase in the creeping flow regime. The Mohan stream functions were used in the calculations in order to approximate the velocity profile inside and outside the droplet. The calculated Sh is presented as a function of the Peclet number, Pe, power-law index, n, and a viscosity ratio parameter, X. Sh increases as n decreases in the pseudoplastic region. The dependence of Sh on …
Bit Penetration Into Rock-A Finite Element Study, J. K. Wang, T. F. Lehnhoff
Bit Penetration Into Rock-A Finite Element Study, J. K. Wang, T. F. Lehnhoff
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The sequence of rock failure mechanisms and quantitative information on stress, displacement and material failure in the process of bit penetration have been obtained through computer simulation. A finite element approach has been developed to simulate bit penetration from bit-rock interaction to chip formation. A mathematical rock failure model, based on available rock failure experiments, has been proposed to represent post-failure rock behavior and applied in the penetration simulations. The finite element code was developed for two-dimensional plane strain problems to consider non-linear material properties, geometric non-linearity, and fracture propagation. An anistropic element as well as variable stiffness and stress …

Geology, Mineralogy, And Fluid Inclusion Geothermometry Of The El Paso Gold Mine, Cripple Creek, Colorado, Charles Albon Lane
Masters Theses
"The Cripple Creek district consists of a deeply- eroded, breccia-filled volcanic subsidence basin. Subsidence of the basin occurred along fissures formed by fracturing during the Laramide orogeny. The material filling the crater probably developed first as fissure flows. Erosion of the volcanics formed the material now filling the basin. Volcanic activity was accompanied by intrusion of numerous sills, dikes, and stocks of several different rock types into the breccia and surrounding granite, punctuated by occasional explosive activity. The majority of the mines in the district lie within the volcanic center; however, a few important ones, most notably the El Paso …

Thomson's Monopoles, I. Adawi
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The angular momentum L of the electromagnetic field due to an electric point charge e, and a magnetic point charge (pole) g, is calculated by several methods to obtain J. J. Thomson's result that L = eg/c, and L is directed along the line joining the electric monopole to the magnetic monopole. The relation to Dirac's monopoles is discussed, and particle size is considered. © 1991, American Association of Physics Teachers. All rights reserved.

The Magnification Factor For Sodium Chloride Liesegang Circles Established With An Aerosol Centrifuge, O. Preining, Josef Podzimek, P. Yue
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Sodium chloride particles deposited on a gelatin film containing silver nitrate form in a humid environment clearly visible dark brown reaction spots (Liesegang circles) after development in u.v.-light. The size of these reaction spots depends on the mass of NaCl in the particles. To establish the spot size vs particle size relation, particles produced by nebulising NaCl-solutions and sea water were sampled in an aerosol centrifuge. The location of deposition yields the aerodynamic diameter of the particle, and the spot size is measured microscopically. In this way the spot size vs aerodynamic diameter relation is established experimentally in the so …

Development Of Helicopter Flight Path Models, Alfred Fermelia, Donald A. Gyorog, V. J. Flanigan
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The objective of this paper is to present general techniques for simulating helicopter flight trajectory response. During flight the pilot manipulates the controls either to trim the helicopter for steady flight by balancing the external forces and moments or to produce a desired maneuver by controlling the unbalance of these forces and moments. Discussions of the physical phenomena involved with the aerodynamics of the rotors and fuselage are given in [1] through [3]. The simulated control function will be composed forward-aft cyclic, lateral cyclic, pedal, and collective. This control will be represented by the vector

A Suboptimal Control Law To Improve The Transient Stability Of Power Systems, Aditya Kumar, Earl F. Richards
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The application of optimal control theory to damp the electromechanical oscillations associated with the transient conditions in power systems has been given little attention. A suboptimal control law which minimizes the sum of the performance indices of the two linear systems given by a piecewise linear model of a power system improves the transient stability better than the usual "optimal" control law obtained from a linearized model. Further, the suboptimal control law presented in this paper assures stability of the system for all disturbances resulting in rotor oscillations of magnitudes less than a preselected limit. Energy - Minerals - Environment: How Now Brown Cow?, Bobby G. Wixson
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
Energy, technical, social, political, economic, and environmental problems are all people related problems which will continue to increase along with the world's population. With the growing demands for more energy and minerals along with the constraints of protecting the environment, new approaches must be considered to these complex problems.
Energy sources, modifications, alternatives, and new developments must be considered for the present as short term resources (next 25- 30 years) and in the future as long range research necessary to develop and implement new technology (25 years on). Major energy sources and their environmental considerations are generally classified as:

Radiative lifetimes of the first P322 state of Mgu, Cau, Znu, Sru, Cdu, and Bau are reported as measured by the Hanle effect in a fast-flowing helium afterglow. They are, respectively, 3.65(0.12), 6.61(0.30), 2.4(0.3), 6.64(0.10), 2.86(0.25), 6.78(0.40) in units of 10-9 sec. The ions in the afterglow are created by Penning ionization of the neutral metal atoms, thus providing a steady-state, field-free region for observation. Comparisons are made with measurements by other methods, and discrepancies are discussed. © 1976 The American Physical Society.

Surface-Electromagnetic-Wave Dispersion Curves Are Usually Calculated using a Simple Equation Derived from Maxwell's Equations and Boundary Conditions. When Complex Dielectric Functions Are Used for the Two Media, the Component of the Propagation Vector Along the Surface, Kx, Becomes Infinite as the Frequency Approaches the Surface Polariton Frequency Ωs If Ω is Considered Complex and Kx is Real. on the Other Hand, If Kx is Considered Complex and Ω Real, the Dispersion Curves Bend Back Toward Smaller Kx as Ω Approaches Ωs. Process Optimization By Flow Sheet Simulation, L. D. Gaines, J. L. Gaddy
Process Optimization By Flow Sheet Simulation, L. D. Gaines, J. L. Gaddy
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Optimization of large or complex chemical processes often requires simplifying the system to reduce the mathematics to a form manageable by available algorithms or to reduce the time required to perform the computations. In many cases, such simplification alters the solution of the problem. Flow sheet simulation programs are ideally suited to the study of chemical processes, although the computational time is generally considered excessive for detailed optimization of complex systems by the usual procedures. This paper discusses the modifications needed to apply flow sheet simulation programs to the optimization of chemical processes. The advantages and disadvantages of the use …

The Internal Chemical Shift - A Key To Bonding In Aromatic Molecules. 2. Substituent Effects On The Carbon-13 Magnetic Resonance Spectra Of The 1,4-Disubstituted Benzenes, Donald W. Beistel, W. Dan Edwards
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Carbon-13 magnetic resonance shifts were determined for six families of 1,4-disubstituted benzenes. Linear least-squares correlations between the internal shifts of the families suggest an additivity relationship for 13C substituent effects at all four nonidentical ring carbons and at the α position when one of the substituents has a central carbon. The correlation of 1H and 13C shifts for these compounds is also linear, implying that the additivity relationships derived in a previous 1H study can be generalized to 13C.

Influence Of Turbidity On The Stratification Development Of A Deep Water Reservoir., David Allen Prouty
Influence Of Turbidity On The Stratification Development Of A Deep Water Reservoir., David Allen Prouty
Masters Theses
"The influence of turbidity on the diurnal temperature distribution and thermocline development in a deep water impoundment which is exposed to heating and cooling loads by convection, evaporation, and radiation is examined analytically. The diurnal behavior of the solar load, directional and spectral, is used with an isotropic multiple scattering model to simulate the attenuation of solar flux by turbid water. The diurnal behavior of the ambient temperature, humidity and wind speed were mathematically modeled to simulate the local (Phelps Co.) spring time of the year. The combined conduction and radiation energy transfer through the water was treated as a …
