Cornell University School Of Civil Engineering Tests On Light Beams Of Cold-Formed Steel, Cornell University School Of Civil Engineering Mar 1944

Cornell University School Of Civil Engineering Tests On Light Beams Of Cold-Formed Steel, Cornell University School Of Civil Engineering

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

I. SCOPE OF THIS REPORT This report contains the complete evaluation of test results of the I-beam tests reported on in the 33rd and 34th Beam Reports. In considering the results of this evaluation, two factors should be kept in mind which adversely affect the accuracy of results: (l) These beams were designed primarily to serve as control specimens for future channel tests. Their usefulness in verifying the equivalent width approach is somewhat impaired by the fact that the compression flanges represent only a rather small part of the total cross-sectional area. Thus, a moderate change of equivalent width of …

A Study Of The Flow Properties Of Concentrated Clay-Water Mixtures, William Joseph Smothers Jan 1944

A Study Of The Flow Properties Of Concentrated Clay-Water Mixtures, William Joseph Smothers

Doctoral Dissertations

"The study of flow properties of many substances is of prime importance in varied industries. The ceramic industry is mainly concerned with these measurements on a relatively stiff ceramic body, i.e., one which contains only enough water to retain its shape after the deforming force is relieved.

Various types of instruments have been devised to measure flow properties in the so-called "true plastic range." Since the primary measurements were made on instruments of the transpiration type to devise the laws of viscous and plastic flow, it was felt that an instrument employing the flow of the plastic material through an …

The Use Of Carbon Dioxide For Dislodging Coal In Mines, Durward Rice Schooler Jan 1944

The Use Of Carbon Dioxide For Dislodging Coal In Mines, Durward Rice Schooler

Professional Degree Theses

"The coal mining industry prior to 1940, was undoubtedly facing a period when operating economies and efficient utilization of labor, machines and modern practices were more necessary than ever before. With its markets definitely threatened by other sources of heat and power produced with a minimum of labor, "Coal" had to exert every effort to secure the lowest possible production cost and also to produce a more satisfactory product with greater safety to men and mines...Many attempts have been, with various methods, to invent a method of breaking down coal that would fulfill the requirements stated above. In 1924 or …

Floods Of May 1943 In Missouri, John August Short Jan 1944

Floods Of May 1943 In Missouri, John August Short

Professional Degree Theses

"The year 1943 will be remembered for a long time as a year of great floods in the Middle West. Floods were occurring in some section of Missouri from April to June. The period of highest stream flow in general occurred during the month of May, and it is the May flood to which this paper pertains. It is quite possible that the importance of this flood is not generally recognized. Although everyone realizes that it was a major catastrophe, only planners for the future, particularly designing engineers, can fully appreciate the benefits which will be obtained from the information …

Drainage As A Factor In The Development And Operation Of A Mine, Peter Paul Ribotto Jan 1944

Drainage As A Factor In The Development And Operation Of A Mine, Peter Paul Ribotto

Professional Degree Theses

"Peele's "Mining Engineers' Handbook" lists six of the more vital factors influencing the method of development and operation of a mine. These are (1) topography, (2) local geology, (3) location and mining of oreshoots, (4) haulage problems, (5) drainage, and (6) ventilation and safety. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a scheme for studying the drainage factor and to show how much a scheme works out in actual practice. Even the casual observer will note the interdependence and interrelationship among the factors listed. So closely tied together are they that the reasonable discussion of an item such as …

Design Of A Submergible Seadrome Light--Universal Type--Suitable For Military Use In All Areas And For Transportation By Aircraft, Frederick Marion Mueller Jan 1944

Design Of A Submergible Seadrome Light--Universal Type--Suitable For Military Use In All Areas And For Transportation By Aircraft, Frederick Marion Mueller

Professional Degree Theses

"This thesis was written in consideration of problems arising in present day use of battery operated seadrome lights. The information contained has been compiled to explain the development of a radically new design in seadrome lighting. Use of a selected single lighted strip is the basis of the design. The seadrome light described is a submergible type and is essentially a modification and combination of the 100 watt beacon lights, used with the Type B-2 portable field lighting set; and the American Gas Accumulator Company Portable Lighting Set PAM-2. The beacon was modified in that it was made waterproof and …

The Combustion Of Phosphorus, Erwin Charles Hoeman Jan 1944

The Combustion Of Phosphorus, Erwin Charles Hoeman

Professional Degree Theses

"Phosphorus first joined the ranks of large-tonnage industrial raw materials about ten years ago, with the development of the electric furnace method for its production from rock phosphate. For many years before the present era of large-scale production, phosphorus had been little more than a laboratory curiosity. Thereafter, it found extensive application in pyrotechnics, match tips, rat poisons, and other uses not requiring more than a few hundred of tons in a year. Phosphoric acids were generally produced by the reaction of sulfuric acid with rock phosphate. The development and growth of electro-thermal processes for the reduction of rock phosphate …

Geological Reconnaissance Of The Coldwater River, Mississippi, Pinckney Ronald Mabrey Jan 1944

Geological Reconnaissance Of The Coldwater River, Mississippi, Pinckney Ronald Mabrey

Professional Degree Theses

"This report was the result of an assigment [sic] to make a geologic reconnaissance of the headwaters of Coldwater River in northwest Mississippi, on which a site for a flood control dam had been made. At the time of the last field work in November, 1940, the boring program for borrow areas and for foundation had been completed.

The Sardis dam on the Little Tallahatchie River, some 35 miles southeast of site for the Arkabutla dam had been recently completed, it being the first of several designed for flood control purposes in the Yazoo basin, Mississippi. This was a hydraulic …

Cornell University School Of Civil Engineering Tests On Light Beams Of Cold-Formed Steel, Cornell University School Of Civil Engineering

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

I. SCOPE OF THIS REPORT (1) Twenty-six tension tests were carried out on specimens cut from the steel from which the beams of the present series were formed. (2) Two specimens of beam 6 - 3 - 16 were tested in the same manner as described in the preceding report. These are replacement specimens furnished by the manufacturer for two beams damaged in the original shipment. (3) The greater part of the evaluation of the results of all twenty-six beam tests was completed and the entire evaluation will be discussed in the next report.

Cornell University School Of Civil Engineering Tests On Light Beams Of Cold-Formed Steel, Cornell University School Of Civil Engineering

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

I. SCOPE OF THIS REPORT 24 symmetrical I-beams were tested in bending. They represent 12 different types of beams, with two beams of each type. The beams are formed from two identical channels, furnished with lips on both flanges, joined by bolting in the web. These tests complete the entire series of such I-beams, except for one type (two specimens) which arrived in damaged condition and are now being replaced by the manufacturer.
