A magnetic filter-type plasma source has been installed and characterized in a 10 ft long x 6ft diameter vacuum chamber. The plasma source was characterized with a fleet of diagnostic probes including an in-house cylindrical Langmuir probe. This resulted in the measurement of key plasma parameters such as electron number density, electron temperature, plasma potential, Debye length, ion current density, streaming ion energy, ion number density, and streaming ion velocity. By varying the flow rates, discharge current, and distance, single points measurements were taken at three locations downstream of the plasma source to establish an optimum operating condition to simulate …

This study underscores the profound influence of rock joints, both persistent and non-persistent with rock bridges, on the stability and behavior of rock masses—a critical consideration for sustainable engineering and natural structures, especially in rock slope stability. Leveraging the lattice spring-based synthetic rock mass (LS-SRM) modeling approach, this research aims to understand the impact of persistent and non-persistent joint parameters on rock slope stability. The Slope Model, a Synthetic Rock Mass (SRM) approach-based code, is used to investigate the joint parameters such as dip angle, spacing, rock bridge length, and trace overlapping. The results show that the mobilizing zones in …

A high entropy carbide (TaNbTiV)C was fabricated via spark plasma sintering of high entropy powders that were prepared using a molten salt method. The as-fabricated high entropy carbide was then investigated for its high-temperature oxidation behavior at 850 °C, under atmospheres with three different oxygen contents (20 vol%, 40 vol%, and 60 vol%). After the high-temperature oxidation process, the main phases observed in all the specimens were incompletely oxidized phase (NbxTi1-x)CyO2-y and oxides (Nb0.5Ta0.5)2O5, TiO2, and Nb2O5. Importantly, the …

Infection is a leading cause of total joint arthroplasty failure. Current preventative measures incorporate antibiotics into the poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement that anchors the implant into the natural bone. With bacterial resistance to antibiotics on the rise, the development of alternative antibacterial materials is crucial to mitigate infection. Borate bioactive glass, 13–93-B3, has been studied previously for use in orthopedic applications due to its ability to be incorporated into bone cements and other scaffolds, convert into hydroxyapatite (HA)-like layer, and enhance the osseointegration and antibacterial properties of the material. The purpose of this study is to better understand …

Given that employee performance goals are major determinants of work motivation and performance, examining the factors that influence goal setting has generated substantial research interest. Despite decades of work, however, the relationship between affect and goal setting is poorly understood. Based on mood-as-information and arousal-as-information theories, our study examines the extent that affective valence and affective arousal influence goal-setting processes and, in particular, the extent that the activation level moderates the effect of affective valence. Since theoretical perspectives that attempt to explain the process of goal setting are commonly based on an expectancy-value framework, we examined the effects of affective …

Personality measures are popular and useful in employment selection and academic contexts; however, concerns have been voiced regarding the strength of their association with desirable criteria. Contextualization (i.e., modifying measures to reflect the desired frame of reference, like work or school) has emerged as a promising option. Research has demonstrated that contextualizing personality measures increases predictive validity and enhances participants' perceptions of the assessments. However, few studies have compared contextualization methods to one another and, to date, only one study has compared the two most common forms of contextualization (i.e., instruction and tag contextualization), returning inconsistent findings. In a within-person, …

Image analysis techniques have been applied and shown to be a valuable tool in nuclear forensics analysis. The interlaboratory exercise reported here has tested quantitative and qualitative approaches for characterizing nuclear materials. Particle size, surface features and morphology descriptions were compared by four laboratories on a common image set generated by Scanning Electron Microscopy and Digital Light Microscopy. Quantitative analysis of the image sets through the Morphological Analysis for Materials software highlighted the strength of image analysis, but also that the application of the software alone can introduce significant bias in the analysis. Qualitative morphology descriptions following the process outlined …

Electrochemical processing of spent nuclear fuel in molten chloride salts results in radioactive salt waste. Chlorine removal from the salt has been identified as an effective and efficient first step in the management of high-level waste. In this work, a simple salt was dechlorinated with a phosphoric acid phosphate precursor, resulting in a glassy dechlorinated product. The dechlorination efficacy was evaluated in air and argon environments. This work serves as an initial step to advance the technological readiness level of h3po4-based dechlorination step toward implementation of iron phosphate waste forms to immobilize electrochemical fuel reprocessing salt waste streams.

Densification behavior, grain growth kinetics, mechanical and thermal properties of pressurelessly sintered zirconium diboride–silicon carbide (ZrB2–SiC) fabricated by extrusion of high solids loading pastes have been studied. The effects of sintering temperature (1600–2300°C), heating rate during constant heating rate sintering (10–50°C/min), and time during isothermal sintering (3–24 h) on density and grain size were examined. The apparent activation energy for densification was determined to be 940 ± 90 kJ/mol, suggesting lattice diffusion as the dominant sintering mechanism. Grain growth of both ZrB2 and SiC followed a normal grain growth power law with grain growth exponent n = 2 indicating diffusion-controlled …

Ductile iron is renowned for its superior mechanical properties, higher strength, and ductility, combined with excellent castability and the economy of using a scrap melting process. The matrix structure as well as morphology and distribution of graphite nodules significantly influences mechanical properties of as-cast ductile iron. Boron contamination of the scrap supply has presented some difficulties in controlling the microstructure and mechanical properties of certain gray and ductile iron grades. In the current study, the effect of boron levels up to 95 ppm was determined on graphite nodularity and distribution in as-cast ductile iron castings as a function of section …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The electrical properties of high-purity magnesium oxide (MgO) samples sintered between 1500 and 1650°C were investigated up to 800°C. Dielectric constant, loss tangent and electrical conductivity were measured between 25 and 800°C. Optimum electrical properties were obtained for the sample sintered at 1600°C. The impurities in polycrystalline and single crystal MgO were discussed to understand their effect on electrical properties and the role of grain boundaries. Higher dielectric losses of polycrystalline samples as compared to the single crystal MgO were attributed to the presence of grain boundaries. MgO could be a useful dielectric material for capacitor applications up to 600°C.

Industry 4.0 mandates a shift from traditional total productive maintenance (TPM) methods, which rely on periodic data gathering and subsequent offline modeling for maintenance scheduling, towards more data-driven and online decision-making approaches. Further, Industry 4.0 emphasizes reducing intervention from high-skilled managers and leveraging real-time data for decision-making, which is characteristic of models rooted in either renewal-theoretic or Markov chains for traditional TPM methods. Digital Twins (DTs), which are virtual representations of physical systems, play a crucial role in this paradigm by enabling online decision-making of maintenance scheduling directly at the workstation level. In this paper, a simulation-based DT (S-DT) is …

We revisit the derivation of multipole contributions to the atom-wall interaction previously presented in Łach et al. [G. Łach, M. DeKieviet, and U. D. Jentschura, Phys. Rev. A 81, 052507 (2010)10.1103/PhysRevA.81.052507]. A careful reconsideration of the angular momentum decomposition of the second-, third-, and fourth-rank tensors composed of the derivatives of the electric-field modes leads to a modification for the results for the quadrupole, octupole, and hexadecupole contributions to the atom-wall interaction. Asymptotic results are given for the asymptotic long-range forms of the multipole terms, in both the short-range and long-range limits. Calculations are carried out for hydrogen and positronium …

Accurate seismic source location has always been the most important purpose of micro seismic and seismic monitoring. The location accuracy inside the existing monitoring networks is generally high, whereas the accuracy in the external area and sensor accessories area tends to be low. This scenario contributes to an overall limitation in the effective monitoring area. The seismic source location was performed in this study using P waves and S waves to improve the location accuracy outside the monitoring networks and in the adjacent area and enlarge the high-accuracy control area of the monitoring networks. Moreover, the mechanism of seismic source …

Musical pleasure stems from an interplay of social, emotional, and cognitive factors. In adults, there are large individual differences in musical reward, with some individuals (deemed "hyperhedonic" to music) reporting very high reward and others (deemed "anhedonic" to music) reporting very low reward. Musical anhedonia is, therefore, a selective lack of pleasure in response to music, defined by self-reported low musical reward in the absence of generalized anhedonia. While this phenomenon has been investigated in adults in recent years, little is known about musical anhedonia or musical reward more generally in children. To address this, we investigated parents' perceptions of …
