On Optimizing Sensor Data Collection, Processing, And Storage For Industrial Additive Manufacturing, Steven Thompson Jan 2025

On Optimizing Sensor Data Collection, Processing, And Storage For Industrial Additive Manufacturing, Steven Thompson

Masters Theses

The widespread adoption of digital data management methods for transformative technologies, such as additive manufacturing (AM), within the aerospace industry is impeded by poor interoperability between AM component manufacturing processes. Moreover, data quality may be compromised due to sensor failures or other corruptions. Additionally, massive amounts of data are collected during these processes, often needing to remain accessible for decades. These storage costs can place a significant financial burden on smaller suppliers. This work aims to make digital data management methods more affordable and, therefore, approachable for smaller suppliers.

First, the design and initial implementation of an affordable and adaptable …

Emi Mitigation, Material Characterization, Transformer Equivalent Circuit Modeling, Reza Vahdani

Masters Theses

Modern high-frequency electronic systems demand precise characterization and modeling techniques to ensure signal integrity and electromagnetic compatibility. This thesis presents three core studies focused on real-world challenges in high-speed and power electronics: EMI mitigation using 3D printed absorbers, wideband liquid dielectric characterization, and accurate transformer modeling.

The first study demonstrates a targeted approach to mitigating electromagnetic interference (EMI) in a commercial router. By using holography imaging to identify radiation hotspots, custom absorber structures were designed with commercially available materials, fabricated via 3D printing, and applied directly to emission sources. Radiated emission tests in a reverberation chamber showed up to 9 …

Augmentation Of Quality Of Service, Security, And Trust In Edge-Enhanced Iot Networks Leveraging Blockchain, Kyle Matthew Whitlatch

Masters Theses

The meteoric rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) has led to multiple architectural schemas to handle the data these devices create. Edge-enhancement is a technique where groups of IoT report to a median layer to aggregate the data before relaying to the endpoint. These edges also open opportunities to perform more operations to ensure devices are behaving properly before committing the data to long term storage. By interconnecting these edges with a technology like blockchain, it is possible to have an interconnected and responsive system to ensure the Quality of Service (QoS) of the IoT devices within the architecture …

Ground Testing Of Cryogenic Environments In Vacuum Conditions, Lucas A. Scott Jan 2025

Ground Testing Of Cryogenic Environments In Vacuum Conditions, Lucas A. Scott

Masters Theses

The environment in the vacuum of space is unforgiving and ever-changing. Not only facing the lack of a protective atmosphere, but powerful radiation and extreme temperature ranges as well. Equipment destined for space must be hardened to withstand them. Just launching satellites that are theoretically able to survive these conditions is unfeasibly costly in the event of failure. Because of this, spacecraft must be tested in a simulated environment that can match the harsh climate in space. Therefore, it is the goal of the Gas and Plasma Dynamics Lab's (GPDL) to test and prove specific methods of recreating these conditions. …

Active cooling reduced the steady state cell temperature by 17.9% and improved the cell …

Evaluating Tropospheric Delay Modeling For Enhanced Geospatial Accuracy, Adeyinka Olaoluwa Olaseinde Jan 2025

Evaluating Tropospheric Delay Modeling For Enhanced Geospatial Accuracy, Adeyinka Olaoluwa Olaseinde

Masters Theses

Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) is a vital technique for monitoring ground surface deformation across large spatial scales. However, variability in atmospheric water vapor, pressure, and temperature introduces tropospheric delays that can significantly affect measurement accuracy. These delays are often corrected using outputs from numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. RAiDER, an open-source Python package, facilitates this by estimating tropospheric delays using models such as the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR). Previous studies have shown that weather model–based corrections can substantially reduce atmospheric noise in InSAR data but also highlight persistent residual errors, especially at spatial scales smaller than the model grid …

Overall Tropospheric Noise Over The St. Louis Using Isce And Fringe Processing, Maryann Lee Jan 2025

Overall Tropospheric Noise Over The St. Louis Using Isce And Fringe Processing, Maryann Lee

Masters Theses

Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) is a satellite-based technique that is used to measure various aspects such as ground deformation, earthquakes, volcanic activity, and motions of glaciers. Although the technique has proved very useful, measurements errors such as ionospheric and tropospheric noise, and deformation often cause problems with making precise measurements. InSAR is a tool used in geodesy that is used to measure the change of surface deformation over time through a series of repeated SAR acquisitions. These errors in the acquisitions occur from factors of signal decorrelation, atmospheric delays, and phase unwrapping errors that affect the accuracy and precision …

Testing The Life-History Dependence Of Dietary Restriction Effects On Oxidative Molecular Damage In Hornworms, Fahime Taheri

Masters Theses

DR and ambient temperature are two environmental factors widely implicated in shaping organismal maintenance and longevity through effects on metabolic rate and oxidative damage. This study tests whether DR and reduced body temperature independently or interactively reduce oxidative protein damage in the gut of tobacco hornworm larvae, a short-lived ectotherm whose life history may constrain typical DR responses. Larvae hatched from eggs were allocated to two feeding regimes (AL and DR) and to 20 °C and 30 °C. At a defined endpoint, guts dissected and homogenized, and analyzed for protein carbonyl content and total protein. Protein damage was expressed as …

Application Of Edge-Enhanced Phase Analysis To Active Microwave Thermographic Measurements, Douglas Blaine Fleetwood

Masters Theses

Nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E) encompasses a range of inspection techniques that assess materials, components, and structures while maintaining their integrity and performance. Among these techniques, thermography is particularly attractive due to its non-contact imaging approach with easy-to-interpret results. Active Microwave Thermography (AMT) has emerged as a promising NDT&E inspection technique that utilizes electromagnetic energy to heat materials through dielectric and magnetic absorption, with subsequent infrared imaging used to detect subsurface defects. While AMT offers significant advantages including material-specific heating optimization and lower power requirements compared to conventional thermographic methods, the technique faces a persistent challenge related to the thermal …

Biological Computing From Microscopic To Macroscopic Evolution, Xiaofeng Ding Jan 2025

Biological Computing From Microscopic To Macroscopic Evolution, Xiaofeng Ding

Masters Theses

A unified theory from microscopic to macroscopic DNA-based biological systems is explained in terms of the rule components used when the system size is increased. Even though the eight female rules in each ruleset are provided with an equal probability of the computation-state outcomes, the initial ensemble of the computation states will exponentially settle into one dominant rule that supports the nutrition needed for growth. The remaining seven rules form into two minority groups to provide the biological characteristics of the system's growth from a micro to macroscopic evolution. The object of this study is to prove that such a …

Advancing Thermodynamic Modeling In Materials Design: From Phase Stability In Metallic Systems To Ferroelectric Property Prediction In Functional Oxide, Kyaw Hla Saing Chak

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation advances the CALPHAD (CALculation of PHase Diagrams) approach for thermodynamic modeling which often lacks sufficient description of crystal lattices for critical phases in multicomponent system. Additionally, CALPHAD does not consider the structural features and its connection with functional properties for functional materials. To address these issues, a novel dual-ordered sublattice model for the κ-phase in Fe-Al-C system, (Fe,Al)3(Fe,Al)1(C,Va)1(C,Va)3, is introduced that improves predictions of equilibrium compositions and phase stability by accounting for both substitutional and interstitial ordering. For the Fe-B-C system, new sublattice formulations for FCC [(Fe)1(C,B,Va)1] and BCC [(Fe,B)1(C,B,Va)3], phases enhance boron solubility predictions and reveal insights …

Mechanisms governing MAX-phase etching set the properties and stability of resulting MXenes, yet the details of this complex process remain poorly understood. Combining thermodynamic analysis of surface chemistries with ab initio molecular dynamics and enhanced free-energy sampling, we directly model elementary steps at the MAX/etching solution interface. We find that purely thermodynamic analysis overestimates etching selectivity, which is governed by the kinetics of elementary reaction steps. Our calculations reveal that initial exposure to water drives localized, thermodynamically favored edge oxidation that seeds MXene-like terminations into the uppermost layers of Ti3AlC2 with oxygen occupying the interlayer space between …

Formation Of Hydrocarbons And Carbon Oxides In Mxene Reactions With Water Under Varying Oxidative Conditions, Shuohan Huang, Guanglei Xiang, Vadym Mochalin

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Titanium carbide / carbonitride MXenes have garnered significant attention due to their remarkable properties, versatile solution processability, and broad range of potential applications. However, when exposed to the environment, MXenes are susceptible to degradation, which ultimately leads to the formation of metal oxides, a process that may be regarded as either disadvantageous or beneficial, depending on the application of a MXene and our knowledge about the underlying mechanisms. Therefore, it is very important to understand the reactivity of MXenes in different environments and conditions. Although researchers have made efforts to understand MXene degradation in air and water, our knowledge of …

Electrochemical Observation And Ph Dependence Of All Three Expected Redox Couples In An Extremophilic Bifurcating Electron Transfer Flavoprotein With Fused Subunits, Debarati Das, Wassim El Housseini, Monica Brachi, Shelley D. Minteer, Anne Frances Miller

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Bifurcating enzymes employ energy from a favorable electron transfer to drive unfavorable transfer of a second electron, thereby generating a more reactive product. They are therefore highly desirable in catalytic systems, for example, to drive challenging reactions such as nitrogen fixation. While most bifurcating enzymes contain air-sensitive metal centers, bifurcating electron transfer flavoproteins (bETFs) employ flavins. However, they have not been successfully deployed on electrodes. Herein, we demonstrate immobilization and expected thermodynamic reactivity of a bETF from a hyperthermophilic archaeon, Sulfolobus acidocaldarius (SaETF). SaETF differs from previously biochemically characterized bETFs in being a single protein, representing a concatenation of the …

Spinosad is a widely used insecticide effective in controlling Aedes aegypti populations, but the molecular mechanisms underlying resistance remain poorly understood. This study explores the role of a serine protease, AeaSP (AAEL002624), in the potential detoxification ability of spinosad. Our results showed the crude protein of Ae. aegypti degraded approximately 48% of spinosad in vitro within 1 h; based on our previous research, AeaSP was believed to be potentially involved in the degradation of spinosad. Subsequently, AeaSP was recombinantly expressed in vitro, and its enzymatic activity was tested using BAEE as a substrate, with a Michaelis constant (KM) of 0.88 …

Tricatalytic Organocatalyst-Enzyme Hybrid Cascade For Improving Complete Oxidation Of Glucose To Carbon Dioxide, Adam Milam, Rokas Gerulskis, Jose Intano, Shelley D. Minteer

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Advancing energy harvesting is crucial for the development of wearable and implantable technologies. Given the high concentration of complex fuels, such as glucose, in biological fluids, biofuel cells present a promising avenue for exploration. However, glucose fuel cells that have been published to date typically catalyze only one or two of the maximum 12 oxidation steps for glucose, resulting in low energy density. Although known multienzyme cascades, which are sequential biochemical reactions where multiple enzymes work in tandem to convert a substrate into a final product, have addressed this inefficiency, they come with several trade-offs, such as reduced power density …

Enhanced Biofuel Cells Based On A Hybrid Enzymatic/Bimetallic Composite For Complete Lactate Catalytic Electrooxidation, Jefferson Honorio Franco, João Victor Bonaldo, Shelley D. Minteer, Adalgisa R. De Andrade

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

We describe complete lactate electrooxidation in an enzymatic biofuel cell that combines the catalytic action of the bimetallic composite Ru@Pt-CNT and the enzyme oxalate oxidase (OxOx). The Ru@Pt-CNT/OxOx hybrid electrode was 2.0-fold more catalytically active than the electrode containing the bimetallic composite only. During chronoamperometric experiments, the hybrid electrode achieved a 35% higher maximum current density (2.65 ± 0.15 mA cm-2) than the Ru@Pt-CNT electrode. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed that the hybrid electrode had lower charge transfer resistance than the Ru@Pt-CNT electrode, confirming that OxOx had a high affinity for lactate during the bioelectrocatalytic reaction on the electrode …

This study explores additive manufacturing of carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites using the Composite-Based Additive Manufacturing (CBAM) process. Carbon/Nylon 12 and Carbon/PEEK composites were fabricated and evaluated through mechanical (compression, tensile, flexural, and impact) and thermal (DSC and TGA) tests. Carbon/PEEK exhibited superior mechanical performance, with 97.5% higher tensile strength, 79.8% higher elastic modulus, and 59.6% higher flexural strength compared to Carbon/Nylon 12. Thermal testing showed that Carbon/PEEK had higher thermal stability, beginning degradation at 350 °C versus 298 °C for Carbon/Nylon. These results indicate that CBAM-fabricated Carbon/PEEK composites are suitable for applications requiring high strength and temperature resistance.

Metal-Free Photoredox Catalysis For The S-Trifluoromethylation Of Thiols, Raheemat Rafiu, Puspa Aryal, V. Prakash Reddy

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The S-trifluoromethylation of thiols is accomplished using a simple and cost-effective organic catalyst (diacetyl) along with a bench-stable and environmentally friendly trifluoro methylating reagent (Langloi's reagent). Under optimized conditions (2.5 equivalents of Langlois reagent, Blue LED irradiation, 48-h reaction time at room temperature), the reaction yielded up to 81% S-trifluoro methylated product. This method's high yields, compatibility with a broad substrate scope (aliphatic, heteroaromatic, and aromatic thiols), and environmentally friendly conditions demonstrate its potential for broader synthetic applications. In contrast to traditional methods that rely on organometallic catalysts and environmentally hazardous reagents, this novel photoredox catalysis method offers a more …
