Multi-Stage Shear Testing Of A Cohesionless Soil, Robert Clyde Gullic Jan 1970

Multi-Stage Shear Testing Of A Cohesionless Soil, Robert Clyde Gullic

Masters Theses

"The multi-stage test is a procedure by which a soil's shear strength parameters can be evaluated by the use of a single sample of the material. The object of the investigation is to evaluate to what extent multi-stage testing can be used on a cohesionless material. Three types of tests, using conventional and multi-stage procedures are evaluated. They are: direct shear/consolidated drained, triaxial compression/consolidated drained and triaxial compression/consolidated undrained shear tests. It was found that multi-stage testing can easily be performed and the shear strength parameter thetaf obtained from these tests are in good agreement with those obtained from …

A Digital Computer Program For Studying Elasto-Plastic Structural Behavior Due To Cyclic Loading, Rameshchandra Chandulal Hazariwala Jan 1970

A Digital Computer Program For Studying Elasto-Plastic Structural Behavior Due To Cyclic Loading, Rameshchandra Chandulal Hazariwala

Masters Theses

"A computer program has been developed to study the behavior of plane stress structures under cyclic loading. Such phenomena as thermal ratcheting, alternate plasticity, shake-down and the Bauschinger effect may be considered. The incremental theory of plasticity has been used. The program deals with realistic conditions such as nonlinear strain hardening, nonlinear temperature distribution and occurrence of both compressive and tensile plastic flow. The concept of an average material property has been used. Thermal ratcheting of a beam subjected to a constant bending moment and a temperature cycle has been studied in detail. The analysis shows analytically that the rate …

A Comparative Study Of Experimental And Computed Compressibility Factors Of Methane-Nitrogen-Carbon Dioxide System, Piloo Eruchshaw Ilavia Jan 1970

A Comparative Study Of Experimental And Computed Compressibility Factors Of Methane-Nitrogen-Carbon Dioxide System, Piloo Eruchshaw Ilavia

Masters Theses

"Experimentally determined compressibility factors of a natural gas with impurities like carbon dioxide and nitrogen are found to differ with the values computed by various methods making use of compositional breakup of the gas. Compressibility factors for five mixtures of known composition were experimentally determined at room temperature, 100ºF, 125ºF, and 150ºF, and at pressure ranging between 1000 psi to 4000 psi. Using the known composition of the mixtures, compressibility factors were calculated by additive volume method and by Eilerts method. The deviation between computed and experimentally determined compressibility factors are at a maximum in the lower and higher pressure …

Chromatographic Determination Of Hydrocarbons Based On Retention Time Data For Squalene And Tetracyanoethylated Pentaerythritol Columns, Mehdi Honarpour Jan 1970

Chromatographic Determination Of Hydrocarbons Based On Retention Time Data For Squalene And Tetracyanoethylated Pentaerythritol Columns, Mehdi Honarpour

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the theory that when several members of a homologous series are injected into a gas chromatograph, at a given flow rate and column temperature, the lograrithm of their retention time as a function of some increasing property of the homologous series may be presented as a straight line and to develop their equations. Experimental procedure was accomplished for the normal paraffin series with 7 1/2% squalene and 10% Tetracyanoethylated Pentaerythritol (T.C.E.pageE.) columns and the relation between retention time and carbon number was determined. The same type of development was employed for aromatic …

Absolute Excitation Cross Sections Of He⁺ In 20-100 Kev He⁺-He Collisions Using Energy-Loss Spectrometry, Donald Roy Schoonover Jan 1970

Absolute Excitation Cross Sections Of He⁺ In 20-100 Kev He⁺-He Collisions Using Energy-Loss Spectrometry, Donald Roy Schoonover

Doctoral Dissertations

"Application of positive-ion energy-loss spectrometry has been extended to include experimental determination of absolute excitation cross sections of ground state helium ions. Helium ion-atom collisions were studied for impact energies ranging between 20-100 keV, in 10 keV intervals. The data were taken with an apparatus resolution between 0.6-o.8 eV FWHM. Cross sections for transitions from ground state to the second and third principal quantum levels of the ion plotted as a function of impact energy were still rapidly increasing at 100 keV. The cross sections at this energy were 1.64(± 0.28) x 10⁻¹⁸cm² for He⁺(l²s1/2) -> He⁺(n = …

Energy-Loss Spectra And Collision Cross Sections For Impact Of 20-120-Kev Positive Ions On Molecular Nitrogen, F. D. Schowengerdt, John T. Park Jan 1970

Energy-Loss Spectra And Collision Cross Sections For Impact Of 20-120-Kev Positive Ions On Molecular Nitrogen, F. D. Schowengerdt, John T. Park

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Inelastic energy-loss spectra induced by impact of H+, H2+, and Ar+ on N2 have been measured at incident ion energies of 20-120 keV, with an energy resolution of about 2 eV. Prominent peaks are observed at energy losses of 9.5 and 13.8 eV. The first of these is well resolved and is attributed to excitation of the Lyman-Birge-Hopfield (LBH) system of N2. The peak at 13.8 eV is believed due primarily to excitation of the bu1 band of the Worley-Jenkins series. The locations of these features on the energy-loss scale do not agree with results of the electron impact work …

Mass Transfer From Spherical Gas Bubbles And Liquid Droplets Moving Through Power-Law Fluids In The Laminar Flow Regime, Robert M. Wellek, Cheng Chun Huang Jan 1970

Mass Transfer From Spherical Gas Bubbles And Liquid Droplets Moving Through Power-Law Fluids In The Laminar Flow Regime, Robert M. Wellek, Cheng Chun Huang

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Calculated mass transfer coefficients for the continuous phase are presented for internally circulating spheres of a Newtonian fluid traveling through a power-law-type continuous phase in the so-called creeping-flow region. The Nakano and Tien stream functions allow the Sherwood number to be computed as a function of the Peclet number, power-law index, and a viscosity ratio parameter. The Hirose and Moo-Young relation is shown to be a limiting case of this numerical solution. Mass transfer rates increase as the fluids become more pseudoplastic and/or the continuous phase consistency index increases, all other factors held constant. © 1970, American Chemical Society. A Heavy-Ion Energy Loss Spectrometer, John T. Park, F. D. Schowengerdt Dec 1969

A Heavy-Ion Energy Loss Spectrometer, John T. Park, F. D. Schowengerdt

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A high-resolution system for the measurement of the energy loss spectra of 20-250 keV heavy ions incident on gas targets is described. The high resolution is obtained by decelerating the ion beam to a low, well-defined energy before performing the energy analysis. The energy loss spectrum is determined by changing the accelerator energy to compensate for energy lost in collisions with the gas atoms. The system is arranged so that normal fluctuations in the accelerator's power supply do not affect the energy resolution. The resolving power of the system is 2.5x104. The primary proton beam has a detected WHM of …

Charge-Transfer Cross Sections For Negative Ions On Atomic And Molecular Targets, W. (William) R. Snow, R. D. Rundel, R. Geballe Dec 1969

Charge-Transfer Cross Sections For Negative Ions On Atomic And Molecular Targets, W. (William) R. Snow, R. D. Rundel, R. Geballe

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Charge-transfer cross sections for H- on O, O2, and NO2; O- on H, O, H2, O2, and NO2; and C- on H and O have been measured over an energy range of 0.5 to 4 keV using a modulated crossed-beam apparatus. The experimental cross sections are compared with theories of resonant and non-resonant charge transfer based on a two-state approximation. For the reactions H-+O O-+H, the cross sections are found to be consistent with detailed balancing. The effect of electron detachment on charge-transfer …

Entropy Of The Mixed State Of Some Low-Κ Type-Ii Superconductors, Don Carlos Hopkins, R. R. Rice, J. M. Carter, J. D. Hayes Dec 1969

Entropy Of The Mixed State Of Some Low-Κ Type-Ii Superconductors, Don Carlos Hopkins, R. R. Rice, J. M. Carter, J. D. Hayes

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The entropy of the mixed state of type-II superconductors with low κ(∼1) is studied for the alloys Pb0.96Tl0.04 and In0.88Sn0.12. The current theories are reviewed for approximations valid near Hc1 and near Hc2. The experiments show for the most reversible sample (Pb0.96Tl0.04) that (SB)T of the mixed state depends only on temperature, and that (ST)B increases linearly with B from its value for the superconducting state until it drops discontinuously to its normal state value at Hc2. There is no abrupt increase in the specific …

Some New Approaches To Shallow Impurity States, Wayne E. Tefft, Robert John Bell, Harold V. Romero Dec 1969

Some New Approaches To Shallow Impurity States, Wayne E. Tefft, Robert John Bell, Harold V. Romero

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A variational calculation of shallow surface impurity states including image-charge and anisotropic mass effects was performed using two different sets of orthogonal functions. The first set was obtained by varying the Bohr radius in the hydrogenic functions, separately for each state. In the second set the Bohr radius was allowed to become anisotropic, and the elements were separately treated as variational parameters. In each case it was shown that with certain restrictions on the variational parameters the set remained complete and orthogonal. General expressions for the energy eigenvalues for both the bulk and surface problem obtained from the first set …

The Use Of Electrochemical Techniques To Study Turbulence Close To A Wall, Kamalesh K. Sirkar, Thomas J. Hanratty Sep 1969

The Use Of Electrochemical Techniques To Study Turbulence Close To A Wall, Kamalesh K. Sirkar, Thomas J. Hanratty

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

Electrochemical techniques can be used to measure the time averaged velocity gradient and the two components of the fluctuating velocity gradient at a solid surface. A chemical reaction Is carried out at the surface of a small electrode embedded in the wall. The voltage applied to the electrode Is large enough that the current flowing in the circuit is controlled by the mass transfer rate. The probes are the mass transfer analog of the hot wire or hot film anemometer. If the test electrode is part of a large electrode surface, it can be used to measure local time averaged …

Turbulence Measurements In Shear Flow Liquid Systems, Robert S. Brodkey, M. F. Cohen, J. S. Knox, G. L. Mckee Sep 1969

Turbulence Measurements In Shear Flow Liquid Systems, Robert S. Brodkey, M. F. Cohen, J. S. Knox, G. L. Mckee

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

The paper is a composite of a number of years of work on turbulence measurements in a variety of liquid flow systems. The trials and tribulations of such measurements are emphasized. Pipe flow Is considered in some detail, and the consistency between results of various investigators is analyzed. Other systems discussed are a stirred tank unit and a multi-jet reactor configuration. Statistical turbulence measurements such as autocorrelation, spectrum, probability density, flatness factor, and skewness factor are considered in terms of obtaining these from digital signals obtained by conversion of the normal analog signals. Descriptive parameters of statistical turbulence, such as …

The Structure Of A Turbulent Water Jet, Philip J. Morris Sep 1969

The Structure Of A Turbulent Water Jet, Philip J. Morris

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

Experimental studies are made to determine the structure of a turbulent water jet.

The paper is divided into two parts. The first gives practical information about the techniques and instrumentation developed to make measurements with hot-wire anemometers in water. A short theoretical discussion is given on the dynamic response of heated fibre in liquids. The second part reports on the results obtained in a one-inch water jet at Reynolds numbers between 12,000 and 20,000. Mean axial velocity measurements are made in the initial five diameters of the jet and the results are used to predict the nature of the vortex …

Turbulence Measurements In Water, Francois J. Resch Sep 1969

Turbulence Measurements In Water, Francois J. Resch

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

Turbulence measurements in water have been undertaken using hot film anemometers in a circular conduit. Two different types of film probe were tested and the problem of drift of the calibration curves was carefully studied. A heat transfer law was established for conical hot film probes.

Some turbulence measurements, made at the axis of the pipe, were compared with the corresponding measurements undertaken in air flow. The comparison led to the conclusion that turbulence measurements can be carried out in water with the same degree of accuracy as those carried out in dynamically similar air flow.

Frequency Response Studies For A Wedge Probe In Viscoelastic Fluids, J. M. Rodriguez, Gary Kent Patterson, J. L. Zakin Sep 1969

Frequency Response Studies For A Wedge Probe In Viscoelastic Fluids, J. M. Rodriguez, Gary Kent Patterson, J. L. Zakin

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

The response of a hot-film wedge probe in viscoelastic fluids has been investigated by imposing on the probe a sinusoidal vibration of known amplitude and frequency. Root-mean-square (rms) velocities calculated from the displacement of the probe were compared to rms velocities obtained with a constant temperature anemometer. The tests were performed under turbulent flow conditions and also at flow rates where viscoelastic effects (i.e., decrease of heat transfer rates from the probe to the fluid and drag reduction) were observed.

The frequency range covered was narrow ( < 100 cps). This limitation was imposed by the decision to superimpose the sinusoidal vibrations on the turbulence signal, in order to have dynamic conditions similar to those encountered in actual turbulence measurements. Measurements were performed in mineral oil and four solutions of polyisobutylene (Vistanex L-200) In mineral oil.

The experimental technique was established by measuring the response of the probe in …

Experimental Investigation Of The Hydrodynamic Stability Of Flow In Rotating Pipes Using Thermistors, Hassan M. Nagib, Ludwig Wolf Jr. Sep 1969

Experimental Investigation Of The Hydrodynamic Stability Of Flow In Rotating Pipes Using Thermistors, Hassan M. Nagib, Ludwig Wolf Jr.

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

The hydrodynamic stability of flow in a rotating pipe Is investigated experimentally using thermistors. The experimental apparatus consists of a rotating pipe made of lucite, 3-1/4 inch inside diameter, six feet long, equipped with porous plugs at the ends to minimize recirculation. The working fluid is water and a range of axial and tangential Reynolds numbers up to 7,000 and 20,000, respectively, is covered. Thermistors were chosen for this study since their high electrical resistivity yields strong signals which permit the use of inexpensive and convenient electronics. They also have a high temperature coefficient of electrical resistance which minimizes the …
