Digital Fault Calculations Of Large Systems Using Matrix Language And Generalized Equations, Saeed Abdel-Halim Khalifa Jan 1973

Digital Fault Calculations Of Large Systems Using Matrix Language And Generalized Equations, Saeed Abdel-Halim Khalifa

Masters Theses

"A new short circuit program has been developed for a large system. Several features have been provided to simplify handling of the system data. Various study cases are performed, efficiently, within the available computer memory. A master data bank is established from bus, feeder and transformer data. They can be modified internally to simulate various system configurations. Matrix formation is accomplished using a new sorting method and the IBM/360 Matrix Language MATLAN. A generalized set of ii ·equations have been developed and applied to calculate four types of faults.

The program consists of two phases of operations. In phase-1, input …

Penetration In Granite By Jets From Shaped-Charge Liners Of Six Materials, Ronald R. Rollins, George Bromley Clark, H. N. Kalia Jan 1973

Penetration In Granite By Jets From Shaped-Charge Liners Of Six Materials, Ronald R. Rollins, George Bromley Clark, H. N. Kalia

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new application of theory for three-dimensional collapse of conical liners shows why the two-dimensional analysis may offer a good approximation. Shaped-charge design parameters and rock target properties were investigated to determine their effects on penetration and breakage. Several metals, liner thicknesses, cone angles and standoff ranges for each were investigated. Effective standoff is greater for aluminum than more dense metals. Jets from the 60° monel, brass and steel liners gave the deepest penetration in granite. Jets from copper and brass liners gave equal penetration for 42° apex angles. Liners containing zinc produced small slugs or none at all. The …

Structure And Chemical Composition Of The Otoliths Of Cyprinus Carpio, Larry Paul Coen Jan 1973

Structure And Chemical Composition Of The Otoliths Of Cyprinus Carpio, Larry Paul Coen

Masters Theses

"The need for the study of microfossils such as foraminifera, conodonts, and otoliths as stratigraphic tools has been well established. However, disarticulated parts such as otoliths and conodonts cannot be effectively used unless they can be recognized. Otoliths, although somewhat unrecognized in the geological record, are far more abundant than articulated skeletons (Frizzell, 1965, p. 86). Therefore, much investigation is being conducted to reveal the origin, function, morphology, and usefulness of the otoliths of fishes.

In this investigation, the asteriscus, well developed only in Ostariophysins (of which the carp is a member), is studied for morphology. New tentative terms are …

A Study Of Homogeneous Catalysis By High-Pressure Kinetics. The Mechanism Of Catalysis Of A Diels—Alder Reaction, Bruce E. Poling, Charles A. Eckert Nov 1972

A Study Of Homogeneous Catalysis By High-Pressure Kinetics. The Mechanism Of Catalysis Of A Diels—Alder Reaction, Bruce E. Poling, Charles A. Eckert

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The application of high-pressure kinetics as a tool to investigate the detailed mechanism of catalysis of a reaction is demonstrated. Activation volumes have been determined for the Diels-Alder addition of 2, 3-dimethylbutadiene to n-butyl acrylate, both uncatalyzed and catalyzed with AICI3. Also, partial molal volumes of reactants and products have been measured. From these data it is shown that the volume profile along the reaction coordinate is similar for both the catalyzed and uncatalyzed reactions. Further, both reactions proceed by a concerted one-step mechanism through a compact transition state with maximum accumulation of double bonds. Thus, the role of the …

Eikonal Approximation For Coupled Equations For Multichannel Scattering, Rung T. Ling, Joseph C.Y. Chen, Jerry Peacher, Kenneth M. Watson Aug 1972

Eikonal Approximation For Coupled Equations For Multichannel Scattering, Rung T. Ling, Joseph C.Y. Chen, Jerry Peacher, Kenneth M. Watson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

It is well known that the Glauber approximation for scattering amplitudes is obtained by applying the eikonal approximation to the Fourier transform of the transition operator. The eikonal approximation can also be applied to the coupled equations of scattering obtained by the expansion of the state function in terms of a suitable set of functions. The scattering amplitude can thus be obtained by solving the set of eikonal coupled equations. The latter approach is analyzed for a special class of channel-coupling potentials. The first-order approximation to the derived eikonal coupled equations is the eikonal Born approximation. Numerical illustrations in this …

PREFACE This report was originally presented as a thesis to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, conferred in August 1972. The author wishes to thank Professor Arthur H. Nilson, Project Director, and Professor Robert G. Sexsmith, Principal Investigator, for the help and guidance that made this work possible. This investigation was supported by the American Iron and Steel Institute.

Molecular Model For Prenucleation Water Clusters, P. L. M. Plummer, Barbara N. Hale May 1972

Molecular Model For Prenucleation Water Clusters, P. L. M. Plummer, Barbara N. Hale

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A molecular model applicable to prenucleation water clusters is described. As an illustration the model is applied to water clusters having clathrate-like structures composed of five-menibered rings. This work was motivated by the apparent inadequacies of the corrected liquid drop model which (in addition to applying bulk properties to small clusters) predicts nucleation rates which may be as much as 1017 larger than experiment. We present the "energy of formation" at a temperature of 277°K for our molecular model for clusters ranging in size from 5 to 57 molecules. These results agree qualitatively with experiment and, we believe, provide …
