Double Beta Decay Of ¹²⁸Te, Edward W. Hennecke, Oliver Manuel, Dwarka D. Sabu

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The half-life of 128Te relative to the half-life of 130Te has been found to be t12128t12130=(1.59±0.05)×103 by measurement of the ββ-decay products, 128Xe and 130Xe, in a geologically old (2.4×109 yr) telluride ore. These results yield an upper limit on the lepton nonconservation parameter, η≤0.8×10-4. RADIOACTIVITY ββ-decay 128Te; measured T1/2=1.5×1024 yr; deduced η≤0.8×10-4. Detected excess 128Xe in old Te ore.

Differential Cross Sections For Elastic And Inelastic Scattering Of 15-100-Kev Li⁺ By He, John T. Park, Victor Pol, James E. Lawler, Jacob M. George, John E. Aldag, John W. Parker, Jerry Peacher Mar 1975

Differential Cross Sections For Elastic And Inelastic Scattering Of 15-100-Kev Li⁺ By He, John T. Park, Victor Pol, James E. Lawler, Jacob M. George, John E. Aldag, John W. Parker, Jerry Peacher

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Sets of energy-loss spectra for Li+ incident on He that were taken at a series of scattering angles were used to calculate differential cross sections. Differential cross sections are given for elastic scattering and for excitation of the He (n=2) states. The differential cross section is also given for excitation of states corresponding to a 60-eV energy loss. These inelastic differential cross sections exhibit maxima at scattering angles greater than zero. The velocity dependence of the cross sections can be compensated by displaying the elastic data in ρ-vs-τ plots and the inelastic data in ρ-vs-E3/2θ plots. When …

Creating The Electric Energy Economy, L. G. Hauser Jan 1975

Creating The Electric Energy Economy, L. G. Hauser

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

My remarks will be directed to four points:

First, that energy is the life blood of our economy, and that its use or conservation is far from a simple matter of personal habits of waste or frugality. In other words, the vital role energy plays in the production of goods and services should be distinguished from its use in their consumption.

Second, that our excessive dependence on our two scarcest energy resources -- oil and natural gas -- is the core of the energy problem, both U.S. and worldwide.

Third, that limiting our time horizon to this winter, next summer, …

Energy And Transportation Policy, James S. Sagner Jan 1975

Energy And Transportation Policy, James S. Sagner

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Energy shortages of recent years suggest a re-examination of national transportation policy. The lack of a coordinated approach to the solution of urban cogestion inhibits potential short-run responses to gasoline shortfalls. Longer-range policy, particularly in the context of severe financial constraints, must be carefully integrated with demonstrated patterns of urban travel and population and employment densities. Given these considerations, metropolitan areas now planning or constructing rapid rail facilities may be selecting inappropriate responses to the problem of urban access.

Subsolidus Equilibria And Metastable Phase Development In The System Zro₂-Al₂O₃-Sio₂, Charles Christopher Sorrell Jan 1975

Subsolidus Equilibria And Metastable Phase Development In The System Zro₂-Al₂O₃-Sio₂, Charles Christopher Sorrell

Bachelors Theses

"Subsolidus equilibria in the low silica portion of the system ZrO₂-Al₂O₃-SiO₂ were studied by X-ray diffraction of quenched samples fired at 1300°, 1400°, and 1480°C. Samples prepared as powders from combinations of a-Al₂O₃, Al(OH)₃, silicic acid, ZrO₂, and kaolinite reacted very slowly at 1300° and 1400°C and the trends toward equilibria are not apparent. A mixture of zircon and Al(OH)₃ reacted slowly at 1480°C to form mullite and ZrO₂, indicating that the latter phases are the stable assemblage rather than zircon and alumina. A gel prepared from aluminum nitrate, zirconyl nitrate, and colloidal silica reacted at 1480°C to form alumina, …

Toacs : An Interactive Computer Graphic Display Model Of A Theaterwide On-Line Air Combat Simulation, Herman William Blick Jan 1975

Toacs : An Interactive Computer Graphic Display Model Of A Theaterwide On-Line Air Combat Simulation, Herman William Blick

Masters Theses

"On-line interactive graphics is a very effective research tool for examining the concepts, components and design parameters of theater warfare involving multiple aircraft. The aim of the present research is to design an on-line computer system which utilizes interactive graphic displays to develop a dynamic, two-sided mathematical model of theaterwide tactical fighter combat operations. The model, called TOACS, is very useful in simulating and evaluating airborne defense systems and the problems common to this type of simulation — such as the formulation of battle strategy for the commitment and guidance of interceptors against threat aircraft -- as well as those …

Tertiary Welded Tuffs Of The Ryan Spring Area, Needle Range, Beaver County, Utah, Peter Carlyle Rauch Jan 1975

Tertiary Welded Tuffs Of The Ryan Spring Area, Needle Range, Beaver County, Utah, Peter Carlyle Rauch

Masters Theses

"The Needle Range of southwestern Utah is composed of Paleozoic sediments overlain by a thick sequence of Tertiary volcanic rocks primarily of the welded tuff class. The area has undergone at least four stages of post-eruptive structural deformation. The most significant stage is that which formed the range by normal Basin and Range type faulting. The faults strike northwest and tilt the volcanic layers northeast.

The volcanic section is composed primarily of the Needles Range Formation (Oligocene) overlain by the Isom Formation and underlain by several flows and ash flows, one of which has been tentatively correlated to the Escalante …

Theoretical And Experimental Investigation Of A Viscous Ring Nutation Damper., Roy Alexander Campbell Iii Jan 1975

Theoretical And Experimental Investigation Of A Viscous Ring Nutation Damper., Roy Alexander Campbell Iii

Masters Theses

"The dynamics of passive dampers applied to high s peed gyro systems is reviewed briefly and the partially filled viscous ring nutation damper is investigated. Particular attention is given to 1 the broken ring or nutation synchronous configuration where the fluid moves as a rigid slug and the damping is greatest. In this mode the damping is assumed to be viscous and expressions for a linear damping constant are presented. Data from an experimental, high-speed gyro is used to verify the theoretical analysis"-- Abstract, p. 1

A Strategic Planning Model For Implementing Community Development Block Grant Programs., John M. Lang Jan 1975

A Strategic Planning Model For Implementing Community Development Block Grant Programs., John M. Lang

Masters Theses

"As problems of metropolitan areas have multiplied, the federal government has been drawn into an ever-increasing intimate funding association with city governments. Although federal funding for ii urban problems may have been considered a panacea by some, most local government agencies have now discovered that their problem has shifted in emphasis from where to find funds to that of meeting federal standards and requirements of application in order to get the funds.

The impact of federal programs on local government management is evident in the recently enacted federal Housing and Community Development Act of 1974. Title I of the act …

Universality Of Management Principles And Applicability Of American Management Know-How In Less Developed Countries., Minas Lessanu Jan 1975

Universality Of Management Principles And Applicability Of American Management Know-How In Less Developed Countries., Minas Lessanu

Masters Theses

"The title is the Universality of management principle through the history and development of management thoughts. It illustrates the gradual education of management principles. Then it goes on to discuss certain problems of the field of management, in particular the problems associated with semetics.

The thesis then discloses the different management principles in the different managerial functions of planning, organizing staffing and controlling. It then shows these principles to be universal and finally discloses the different environmental constraints that evolved and concludes that they are universal, but their applicability is to a certain extent possible and highly dependent on the …

A Study Of The Potential Performance Improvements Available From The Ga(W)-1 Airfoil As Compared To The Naca 2412 Airfoil., Robert Keith Rice Jan 1975

A Study Of The Potential Performance Improvements Available From The Ga(W)-1 Airfoil As Compared To The Naca 2412 Airfoil., Robert Keith Rice

Masters Theses

"A direct comparison of the current NACA 2412 section general aviation airfoil and the recently developed GA(W)-1 airfoil was conducted in the University of Missouri - Rolla's subsonic wind tunnel. Finite aspect ratio performance of both airfoils equipped with 30 percent chord flaps was studied to predict possible performance gains for general aviation aircraft available from the GA(W)-1 section.

Results show that the NACA 2412 airfoil with a standard slotted type flap gives a maximum lift coefficient of 1.88 with the flap deflected 30 degrees and a test Reynolds number of 4.Sxl0 5 based on wing chord. The GA(W)-1 section …

An Experimental Study Of Mass Transfer To Droplets In Aqueous Polymer Solutions., Richard Gerard Schafermeyer Jan 1975

An Experimental Study Of Mass Transfer To Droplets In Aqueous Polymer Solutions., Richard Gerard Schafermeyer

Masters Theses

"Instantaneous and time-average mass transfer coefficients for 1 the free-fall period was obtained for transfer of iodine from nonNewtonian continuous phases to carbon tetrachloride drops. The nonNewtonian continuous phases were aqueous solutions of carboxymethyl cellulose and carboxy polymethylene. Although a few exceptions were found, the continuous phase mass transfer coefficients were, in general, found to decrease with increasing time of drop contact. Comparisons of the experimental data to theoretical relations showed that changes in drop internal circulation probably occurred for that data which showed a time effect for the mass transfer coefficient. Several explanations for the time effect were offered, …

Decoupled Explosive Charge Effects On Blasting Performance, Roberto Ucar Jan 1975

Decoupled Explosive Charge Effects On Blasting Performance, Roberto Ucar

Masters Theses

"This investigation was performed to determine the burden at which hard rock would break utilizing decoupled and unstemmed charges when the free surface parallel to the borehole was the wall of an open hole. This open hole was created by burn cuts and by drilling holes of 7-7/8 in. and 12 in. diameter. Additional tests were performed using partially stemmed charges where the stemming was the same size as the explosive charge.

The explosive used was a 0.75 lb. slurry charge, 1.5 in. diameter and 10 in. long. The diameter and depth of the borehole were 2 in. and …

Computer Simulation Of Radiation Effects In Fe₃Al By Using Alternating Direction Implicit Numerical Techniques., Dean Lewis Tibbitts Jan 1975

Computer Simulation Of Radiation Effects In Fe₃Al By Using Alternating Direction Implicit Numerical Techniques., Dean Lewis Tibbitts

Masters Theses

"An analysis was conducted to see if the alternating direction implicit (a.d.i.) numerical technique could be applied to a many-body dynamical radiation damage model.

The computer program which resulted was named ADI. It was numerically stable for small time steps used in conjunction with low ev knock-ens. It was also able to relax the a toms in the system simultaneously in the implicit direction. However, an existing explicit computer code, which was to be replaced by ADI, proved to be more numerically stable and about 40% faster"-- Abstract, p. ii

Documentation Of A Short Circuit Program For Fault And Protection Studies., Alejandro Gonzales Jan 1975

Documentation Of A Short Circuit Program For Fault And Protection Studies., Alejandro Gonzales

Masters Theses

"For a given power system of no more than 100 buses and 400 line ends (source lines have one line end, radial lines have one line end and regular lines have two) a digital computer program is presented which determines the short circuit currents needed to implement a protective relaying design, The program uses the ZBUS method of analysis and calculates the currents at all buses, searches for the maximum and minimum values of the current contributed by the lines connected to the faulted bus under normal conditions (all lines in) and under single and double line outages. Maximum and …

An Analysis Of A Network Of Finite-Queue, Multiple-Server Facilities., Juanita Kaye Shukers Grau Jan 1975

An Analysis Of A Network Of Finite-Queue, Multiple-Server Facilities., Juanita Kaye Shukers Grau

Masters Theses

"An algorithm for listing all possible steady states and for generating the transition matrix for a series of finite-queue, multiple-server facilities is described. This algorithm is compared to a previously developed one. The new algorithm is better since it works for multiple servers and does not require an extra pseudo-facility. Using the list of states and the matrix generated by the new algorithm, exact steady state probabilities can be calculated. Then the probabilities can be used to obtain system statistics which cannot be calculated otherwise"-- Abstract, p. ii

Fluid Inclusion Geothermometry Of Tri-State Sphalerite, Chi-Sheng Wei Jan 1975

Fluid Inclusion Geothermometry Of Tri-State Sphalerite, Chi-Sheng Wei

Masters Theses

"Fluid inclusions in successively deposited generations of sphalerite from the Tri-State district have been examined for geothermometry as a function of time. The main stage of vug-filling sphalerite has been studied most intensively and as many as 83 fluid inclusions have been examined in a single crystal. These sphalerite crystals are commonly zoned, and their filling temperatures exhibit a general pattern of declining temperature from their cores outward, from about 135°C down to 90°C. The decline is not a steady one, but rather it is characterized by fluctuations commonly about 15-20°C. Some fluctuations have magnitudes as great as 50-60°C, with …

Effects Of Colloidal Materials And Polyelectrolytes On Carbon Adsorption In Aqueous Solution., Jack Taylor Garrett Jr.

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of certain colloidal materials and long-chain polyelectrolytes on the adsorption efficiency of some selected activated carbons which were manufactured from both coal-based and lignite-based materials. Phenol was used as the adsorbate to determine the adsorption efficiency.

At the beginning of the study, four brands of activated carbon (i.e. Filtrasorb 400, Darco, Norit, and Witco 256) were tried, based on the preliminary adsorption data, two activated carbons were subsequently selected for use throughout the entire study. These were Calgon's Filtrasorb 400 and American Norit's Norit activated carbons. The former represents a …

The Availability And Development Of An Automated Accounting System For Small Businesses., Margy Rice Beckmeyer Jan 1975

The Availability And Development Of An Automated Accounting System For Small Businesses., Margy Rice Beckmeyer

Masters Theses

"A good accounting system is a very essential part of the successful operation of a small business but is often lacking. Therefore, the objective of this research is to furnish a general automated accounting system suitable for use by the small business firm.

To determine the feasibility, a statistical survey was made to evaluate the availability of automated accounting systems now available to small business. The results of the survey suggest that computer systems are presently available to small business firms at economical prices, but to minimize cost the small firm may need to supply its own accounting program.

The …

An Analysis Of The Role And Effectiveness Of The Contract Manager In Government Contracting., Daniel Martin Wilson Jan 1975

An Analysis Of The Role And Effectiveness Of The Contract Manager In Government Contracting., Daniel Martin Wilson

Masters Theses

"The contract manager in carrying out the contract management function of government contracting represents a vital element of the procurement process. He is charged with responsibilities for assuring that a product or service is delivered in a timely manner and is of specified quality, quantity and price. However, research and a survey of his role reveal that he is regarded a s a functional specialist, guided by a mass of procedural requirements, and he is not included in the managerial hierarchy of contracting.

Because his role does not accord him the status or authority commensurate with the importance of the …

The Spheriodization Of Tool Steels., Siri Ram Rai Jan 1975

The Spheriodization Of Tool Steels., Siri Ram Rai

Masters Theses

"Four different tool steels--AISI 01, Sl, A9 and Tl5--were obtained in the 1/2-inch diameter hot rolled and air-cooled condition from the steel mill. The lower critical temperatures of these steels were determined. The spheroidization of each steel by three different spheroidizing procedures was evaluated with the use of hardness testing and metallographic techniques. Isothermal annealing completely spheroidized each steel yielding coarse carbides and low hardness. Cyclic annealing was an effective spheroidization procedure only for 01 and Tl5 steels. Hardening and tempering resulted in rather fine spheroidized structures in these steels. The total time consumed to produce the best spheroidized structures …
