Substrate channeling is a strategy for enhancing flux and yield in enzymatic cascades and is increasingly relevant for applications in biocatalysis, biotechnology, and bioelectrochemical systems. However, efforts to engineer channeling are limited by the lack of high-throughput methods to evaluate and optimize channeling efficiency. Here, we present a fluorescence-based screening assay to rapidly assess substrate channeling in a model system involving fumarase and malate dehydrogenase, two sequential enzymes from the Krebs cycle. By expressing genetic fusions in Escherichia coli, quantifying intermediate (malate) and product (NADH) formation in lysate using orthogonal fluorescent readouts, and comparing product-to-intermediate ratios, we screened a library …

An Adaptive Immersive Training Framework For Miner Self-Escape Readiness In Underground Mining Emergencies, Muhammad Azeem Raza, Samuel Frimpong, Saima Ghazal
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Underground mining environments are complex and hazardous operations where emergencies continue to happen. Underground mine emergencies require rapid, high-stakes decision-making under conditions of uncertainty, stress, and limited visibility. Conventional mine emergency training largely relies on instruction-based approaches which provide insufficient exposure to the cognitive and behavioral demands of real underground emergency situations. There has been an identified need to train miners for knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (KSAOs). This study proposes an Adaptive Immersive Training Framework (AITF), a cognitively grounded architecture that integrates cognitive task analysis (CTA), KSAOs, and situational awareness assessment for miner self-escape training and readiness. The …

High-profile failures of infrastructure systems are often attributed to design flaws. However, these incidents can also stem from a broader set of interconnected decisions made by stakeholders involved in the planning, management, and operation of these systems. While ethical guidelines and professional codes are designed to prevent such failures, cognitive biases may undermine adherence. Previous research efforts, primarily focused on ethical violations using case studies, have overlooked how behavioral ethics constructs and professional conduct could drive these breaches. This paper addresses this knowledge gap by (1) conducting an analysis of three system failure cases at the micro, meso, and macro …

Highlights: What are the main findings? A Random Forest-based model using dual-polarimetric radar features achieves >99% accuracy in classifying precipitation and non-precipitation echoes. Multi-scale spatial variability features enhance discrimination between genuine precipitation and spurious echoes. Fusion of GOES-16 infrared satellite data with NEXRAD radar effectively removes non-precipitation echoes with precipitation-like signatures, including wind turbine clutter. A CAPPI scan strategy improves near-radar precipitation detection by recovering valid echoes misclassified at the lowest elevation due to side-lobe interference and limited sampling volume. What are the implications of the main findings? The model's robustness to noise and overfitting, combined with minimal hyperparameter tuning, …

The rapid adoption of drones across various domains, alongside advancements in computer vision, has driven growing interest in vision-based airborne object detection from moving aerial platforms. However, this task remains challenging due to the small scale of objects, camouflage within cluttered backgrounds, and occlusions. To address these challenges, we introduce an end-to-end detection framework that integrates a Drone Receptive Field Block (DRFB) to extract multiscale and geometrically diverse features, specifically designed to enhance the detection of small and camouflaged airborne objects. To model motion patterns over time while preserving spatial structure, particularly for detecting camouflaged, cluttered and occluded objects with …

Describing intermolecular forces is fundamental to modeling and predicting the behavior of molecular systems. In particular, long-range molecular interactions with electrostatic, induction, and dispersion as the main components play a critical role, especially for low-temperature and low-density regimes. Long-range interactions are often described through perturbation theory, representing the electronic charge distribution via a multipolar series of the moments and polarizability tensors corresponding to each molecule. However, while the theory is well established, obtaining the resulting analytical expressions (and their practical implementation) constitutes a highly complex and system-dependent task. To address this challenge, we developed long-range-fit (LRF), an interactive and user-friendly …

Multi-dimensional arrays are referred to as tensors. Tensor-valued predictors are commonly encountered in modern biomedical applications, such as electroencephalogram (EEG), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional MRI (fMRI), diffusion-weighted MRI, and longitudinal health data. In survival analysis, it is both important and challenging to integrate clinically relevant information, such as gender, age, and disease state along with medical imaging tensor data or longitudinal health data to predict disease outcomes. Most existing higher-order sufficient dimension reduction regressions for matrix- or array-valued data focus solely on tensor data, often neglecting established clinical covariates that are readily available and known to have predictive value. …

This article suggests that the two parallel wavy lines in Linear B sign 76 depict the river traveled nightly by the Egyptian sun god Ra. Also:
1. The Egyptian influence was likely exerted already on the Linear A and Cretan hieroglyphic antecedents of Linear B sign 76.
2. Variants of Linear B sign 76 contain a horizontal line across the two wavy vertical lines. The present article suggests the horizontal line might indicate one of the river’s twelve gates that Ra had to navigate through in his nightly journey.
3. But the single line for that one gate was likely …

An Improved United-Atom Potential For Molecular Dynamics Simulation Of Saturated Properties Of N-Alkanes, Wazih Tausif, Jordan Hartfield, Alex George, Zhi Liang
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Multiple united-atom (UA) potential models have been developed in the literature to reproduce experimental saturated properties of n-alkanes using Monte Carlo simulations. When these UA potentials are employed in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, MD simulations often give relatively poor predictions of saturated properties of n-alkanes, particularly the saturated vapor densities, due to the challenges in accurate calculation of long-range intermolecular forces beyond the cutoff distance in an inhomogeneous system. In this work, a new set of UA Lennard-Jones (LJ) interaction parameters for n-alkanes is proposed to reproduce the saturated properties, including saturated liquid and vapor densities (ρf and ρ …

Twenty-year uninterrupted endeavor of titanium alloys printing has opened up a new paradigm in metal additive manufacturing (AM) to fabricate engineering components with required strength–density–corrosion combinations. Despite the remarkable advances in titanium AM, controlling the grain structure to print the parts with engineered microstructures, tailored mechanical properties, and minimum anomalies remains challenging. Numerous approaches have been implemented to address this challenge, such as printing parameter control, post-AM heat treatments, and thermomechanical processing. In addition to the aforementioned conventional approaches, novel techniques have been proposed that require employing hybrid manufacturing or developing the printer itself. One of the novel pathways in …

In view of the toxic effects of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), fast and effective assessment of their concentrations in marine mammals is important for understanding individual and population-level health impacts. This study developed an ultrasonic-based method that is less time-consuming, uses minimal solvent, and thus is more sustainable than the gold standard Soxhlet method for accurate analysis of organochlorine pesticides (OCs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and benzene hexachlorides (BHC) in false killer whale blubber. This method was developed by comparing concentrations of POPs obtained using the traditional Soxhlet and novel ultrasonic extraction methods using blubber from false killer whales (n = …

We explore the existence and dynamical generation of rogue waves (RWs) within a one-dimensional quantum droplet-bearing environment. RWs are computed by deploying a space-time fixed point scheme to the relevant extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation (eGPE). Parametric regions where the ensuing RWs are different from their counterparts in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation are identified. To corroborate the controllable generation—relevant to ultracold atom experiments—of these rogue patterns, we exploit two different protocols. The first is based on interfering dam break flows emanating from Riemann initial conditions, and the second refers to the gradient catastrophe of a spatially localized waveform. A multitude of possible …

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, have gained popularity in various fields such as agriculture, emergency response, and search and rescue operations. UAV networks are susceptible to potential security threats, such as wormhole attacks, jamming, spoofing, and false data injection. Time-Delay Attack (TDA) is a unique attack in which malicious UAVs intentionally delay packet forwarding, posing significant threats, especially in time-sensitive applications. It is challenging to distinguish malicious delay from benign network delay due to the dynamic nature of UAV networks, intermittent wireless connectivity, or the Store-Carry-Forward (SCF) mechanism during multi-hop communication. Some existing works propose machine learning-based …

Body armor is a vital piece of protective equipment for warfighters to defend against threats, necessitating continued development to improve comfort, weight, and protection. However, female warfighters often wear unisex body armor, designed primarily for the male torso. Current research has evaluated the short- and long-term detriments of female warfighters wearing these armors, focusing on comfort and performance. However, these studies do not comprehensively consider how a non-form-fitting armor compromises warfighter safety from battlefield threats. This research examines the geometric effects of female warfighters on armor protection level when defending against shock threats by evaluating the energy distribution on a …

Preferential fluid flow remains a major challenge in subsurface energy production and gas storage operations, resulting in excessive water production in mature oil fields, reduced heat extraction in geothermal reservoirs, and low sweep and storage efficiency in CO2-EOR projects. Polymer gels are widely used to mitigate high-permeability channels; however, conventional systems exhibit limited plugging efficiency and short lifetimes in ultra-high-temperature reservoirs due to poor thermal stability. This study presents a novel ultra-high-temperature-resistant preformed particle gel (UHT-PPG) developed for conformance control in reservoirs with temperatures of 150–275 °C and severe super-K or channeling problems. The material was evaluated in …

Implicit and hybrid particle-in-cell methods are widely used for efficient simulation of DC discharge plasma transport. However, their computations require solving anisotropic elliptic equations and face challenges related to mesh geometry, non-axisymmetry, and complex interfaces. Moreover, the accuracy of particle trajectories is critical for plasma etching and erosion studies, where errors near interfaces can significantly impact simulation results. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a three-dimensional anisotropic trilinear partially penalized immersed finite element (ATPPIFE) method, which captures interfaces on Cartesian meshes and effectively reduces discontinuities at interface element faces, ensuring that particle trajectories better align with real-world behavior. This study evaluates the two-group interfacial area transport equation (2G IATE) coupled with the S-Gamma (Sγ) population balance equation (PBE) model for beyond bubbly flow regimes in a vertical large-diameter pipe. The 2G IATE framework incorporates intergroup mass transfer mechanisms and is implemented within the Sγ model, which assumes a log-normal bubble size distribution. The numerical approach is validated against experimental data from Schlegel et al. (2012), with a focus on the void fraction and interfacial area concentration (IAC) distributions. The results show that 2G IATE improves the predictions of the void fraction and IAC, although its accuracy varies with …

Advancing our understanding of few-body dynamics in simple atomic systems is a fundamental objective in atomic scattering research. The underlying problem is that the Schrödinger equation is not analytically solvable for more than two mutually interacting particles. This involves a comprehensive exploration of various channels, such as ionization, capture, and excitation. A common theoretical approach to describe ion-atom collisions is based on perturbation theory, where the scattering amplitude is expanded in powers of the interaction potential. Here, understanding the few-body problem means accurately describing the relative importance of the higher- vs the first order terms.
In the case of ionization, …

Turbulence in compressible flows plays a central role in applications such as air-fuel mixing in supersonic combustors and is significantly more complex than incompressible turbulence due to the presence of fluctuating thermodynamic quantities. As such, models like the Strong Reynolds Analogy (SRA) are used to relate these quantities. However, SRA validity has been examined primarily in boundary-layer flows. In this work, a newly developed Two-Point Focused Laser Differential Interferometry (2-FLDI) system is implemented in a two-dimensional parallel supersonic jet. The diagnostic is described in detail, including optical alignment procedures, calibration methods, and data analysis techniques. Measurements acquired at multiple streamwise …

This work aims to develop a reliable algorithm for stall detection during excavator digging by analyzing key operational variables such as velocity and angular displacements from machine monitoring data. The work develops and validates a heuristic algorithm to detect stalling events and trains a support vector machine classification algorithm to distinguish between "normal" digging cycles and cycles with stalling. This work is a novel attempt at using a classification algorithm to categorize digging cycles into normal and those with stalling events based on machine monitoring data alone. The developed classification algorithm achieved a sensitivity of 100%, indicating it correctly identified …

In bound systems whose constituent particles are heavier than the electron, the dominant radiative correction to energy levels is given by light-fermion (electronic) vacuum polarization. In consequence, relativistic and recoil corrections to the one-loop vacuum-polarization correction are phenomenologically relevant. Here, we generalize the treatment, previously accomplished for systems with orbiting muons, to bound systems of constituents with more general spins: spin-0, spin-1=2, and spin-1. We discuss the application of our more general expressions to various systems of interest, including spinless systems (pionium), muonic hydrogen and deuterium, and devote special attention to the excited non-S states of deuteronium, the bound system …

Metal-coated optical fibers are widely employed in sensing applications owing to their superior mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. However, their calibration at elevated temperatures is hindered by hysteresis, manifested as discrepancies between heating and cooling cycles, primarily caused by residual strain from mismatched thermal expansion coefficients (TECs) between the metal coating and silica cladding. This research introduces an optimal heat treatment procedure aimed at minimizing the impact of the mismatch in TECs between the cladding and the coating materials that causes the residual strain in gold (Au) and copper (Cu) coated fibers for achieving reliable distributed high temperature sensing up …

In sensor-driven dynamic systems, missing data can severely degrade parameter estimation accuracy. This article investigates the impact of missing data on phase estimation in a mass-spring-damper system using an information-theoretic framework based on the Cramér-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB). Closed-form CRLB expressions are derived for four scenarios: complete data, missing completely at random (MCAR) deletion, MCAR-based imputation, and missing at random (MAR) missingness via a selection-weighted formulation. These bounds are used as theoretical benchmarks to evaluate classical imputation methods (last observation carried forward (LOCF), linear interpolation) and advanced approaches (Kalman filtering, Rauch-Tung-Striebel (RTS) smoothing, Bayesian inference, and transformer-based imputation) through Monte …

In this paper, a novel deep learning (DL) approach has been proposed to realize high-resolution electromagnetic (EM) inversion imaging. The newly proposed approach is based on the deep convolutional double-module structure (DCDMS), consisting of the pixel-interpolating module and the corresponding quality-improving module. While the pixel-interpolating module roughly increases the 'resolution' of the initial input, the following quality-improving module realizes quantitative EM imaging in high resolution. The input of the proposed DCDMS adopts the mixed input scheme, consisting of the received EM scattered field and the initial reconstruction in much low resolution computed from Gauss-Newton method. The output of the proposed …

Extending Fischoff, we used vignettes to examine people's perceptions of a hypothetical rap fan accused of murder. Study 1 (N = 300) used a 2 (murder accusation) x 2 (inclusion of rap lyrics) x 2 (fan gender) experiment, asking participants to judge how capable of murder and sexually aggressive they found the fan. The presentation of lyrics and murder accusation were associated with the fan being more capable of murder, while rap lyrics and participants' rap attitudes were associated with the fan being more sexually aggressive. Thematic analysis revealed that, in conditions containing both the lyrics and the murder accusation, …

Aerodynamic levitation combined with laser beam heating has become an established technique for studying the structure of materials at ultra-high temperatures and under non-equilibrium conditions. This article briefly highlights some recent technical and scientific advancements in understanding the relationships between a material's behavior and its structure, investigated using diffraction methods. It focuses on three evolving frontiers: sophisticated sample environments for accessing metastable states and reactive chemistries, high-flux photon and neutron probes to reveal atomic structure, and advanced computational modeling frameworks. Free from contamination, containerless processing (levitation) can minimize heterogeneous nucleation at the interface, enabling access to deeply supercooled melts or …
