Many applications of ferroic materials, such as data storage and spintronics, are achieved through the control and manipulation of their domain wall (DW) orientations and configurations. Here we propose a rotational compatibility condition to identify low-energy DWs in perovskites with oxygen octahedral tilt instability. It is derived from the strong DW energy anisotropy arising from the rigidity and corner-sharing feature of the octahedral network. We analyze quantitatively the DWs in SrTiO3 and explain successfully the unusual ferroelectric DW width and energy in BiFeO3.

We have performed calculations of the fully differential cross sections for electron-impact ionization of magnesium atoms. Three theoretical approximations, the time-dependent close coupling, the three-body distorted wave, and the distorted wave Born approximation, are compared with experiment in this article. Results will be shown for ionization of the 3s ground state of Mg for both asymmetric and symmetric coplanar geometries. Results will also be shown for ionization of the 3p state which has been excited by a linearly polarized laser which produces a charge cloud aligned perpendicular to the laser beam direction and parallel to the linear polarization. Theoretical and …

In this work we use the classical trajectory Monte Carlo method within an eight-electron scheme to theoretically study photonic spectra that follow charge-exchange processes between highly charged ions of charge states 10+, 17+, 18+, and 36+ with neutral argon. The energy range considered is 18 eV/amu to 4 keV/amu, covering typical electron beam ion traps and solar wind energies. The role played by multiple electron capture processes for the different collision systems under consideration is explicitly analyzed and its contribution separated as arising from radiative decay and autoionizing multiple capture. For the present collision systems we find that multiple electron …

Oscillation Of Second-Order Emden–Fowler Neutral Delay Differential Equations, Ravi P. Agarwal, Martin Bohner, Tongxing Li, Chenghui Zhang
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We establish some new criteria for the oscillation of second-order Emden–Fowler neutral delay differential equations. We study the case of super linear and the case of sublinear equations subject to various conditions. The results obtained show that the presence of a neutral term in a differential equation can cause or destroy oscillatory properties. Several examples are provided to illustrate the relevance of new theorems.
Calculation For Moment Capacity Of Beam-To-Upright Connections Of Steel Storage Pallet Racks, Tuo Wang, Xianzhong Zhao, Yiyi Chen
Calculation For Moment Capacity Of Beam-To-Upright Connections Of Steel Storage Pallet Racks, Tuo Wang, Xianzhong Zhao, Yiyi Chen
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
Steel storage pallet rack structures are three-dimensional framed structures, which are widely used to store different kinds of goods. For the easy accessibility to stored products, pallet racks are not usually braced in the down-aisle direction. The down-aisle stability is mostly provided by the characteristics of beam-to-upright connections, and the characteristics of upright base connections. In this paper, calculation for moment capacity of beam-to-upright connections is carried out. A mechanical model is presented firstly. Based on the model, moment capacity is related to the failure capacity, directly determined by the failure mode, of the topmost tab of the beam-end-connector and …

Simplified Seismic Design For Mid-Rise Buildings With Vertical Combination Of Cold-Formed Steel And Concrete Framing, X. L. Yuan, L. Xu
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
Presented in this paper is a practical approach for the seismic design of mid-rise buildings with vertical combination of cold-formed steel and concrete framing. In current design practice the presence of vertical irregularities on both mass and stiffness inherited in such building structures creates a challenge for the seismic design. Currently, a two stage lateral force procedure prescribed in ASCE 7 is prescribed for evaluating the seismic load if the lateral stiffness of the lower structure of the building is considerably more rigid than the upper one. In the proposed approach the requirement associated with the two stage analysis procedure …

Design Equations For Tensile Rupture Resistance Of Bolted Connections In Cold-Formed Steel Members, Lip H. Teh, Benoit P. Gilbert
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
This paper summarises and re-examines the authors’ previous research results concerning the tensile rupture resistance of cold-formed steel bolted connections in a flat sheet, in a channel’s web, and in one leg of an angle section. Staggered bolted connections are also included. The fundamental shortcomings of the design equations given in the 2012 North American Specification for the Design of Cold-formed Steel Structural Members are described, and the alternative design equations proposed by the authors are shown. The alternative equations are checked against laboratory test results obtained by the authors and other researchers where the bolts had not been snug-tightened …

Acoustic Performance Of Different Cold-Formed Studs In Double-Leaf Walls By Finite Element Analysis And Experiment, V. B. Nguyen, T. Morgan, M. A. English, M. A. Castellucci
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
Cold-formed steel studs are often used in lightweight partition walls to provide structural stability but in the same time they change the acoustic performance of the whole system. The overall design of such lightweight structures for acoustic sound insulation becomes very complicated as the sound passing through stud needs to be quantified. One of the greatest challenges is to characterise the stud’s geometric effects on the sound transmission of the partition walls. This paper presents a Finite Element modelling approach and results into the acoustic performance of cold-formed studs in double-leaf walls which are placed in between a source room …

Cold-Formed Steel Channel Sections With Web Stiffeners Subjected To Local And Distortional Buckling — Part Ii: Parametric Study And Design Rule, Liping Wang, Ben Young
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
A parametric study of cold-formed steel channel sections with web stiffeners subjected to bending was performed using finite element analysis (FEA). An accurate finite element model was used for the parametric study. The parametric study included 75 beams of plain and lipped channel sections with web stiffeners. The beams were simply supported and subjected to four-point bending. The strengths and failure modes of specimens obtained from experimental and FEA results were compared with design strengths predicted using the direct strength method (DSM) specified in the North American Specification for cold-formed steel structures. The comparison shows that the design strengths predicted …

Shape Optimisation Of Cold-Formed Steel Profiles With Manufacturing Constraints - Part Ii: Applications, Bin Wang, Benoit P. Gilbert, Adrien M. Molinier, Hong Guan, Lip H. Teh
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
This paper uses the Genetic Algorithm (GA)-based optimisation method for cold-formed steel (CFS) profiles with manufacturing constraints, developed in the companion paper, to shape-optimise simply-supported and singly-symmetric open-section columns. Having a uniform wall thickness of 0.047 inch (1.2 mm), the columns are subjected to a compressive axial load of 16,860 lbf (75kN) and optimised for yielding and global buckling. Column lengths ranging from 3.28 ft (1,000 mm) to 9.84 ft (3,000 mm) are investigated. The algorithm is run with and without considering the manufacturing constraints. Differences between the two types of cross-sections, i.e. manufacturable and non-manufacturable, are evaluated. The influence …

Development Of A New Beam-Column Design Method For Cold-Formed Steel Lipped Channel Members, Shahabeddin Torabian, Baofeng Zheng, Benjamin W. Schafer
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
The structural strength of cold-formed steel lipped channels under combined axial force and biaxial bending moments has been predicted by geometric and material nonlinear collapse analyses performed in ABAQUS and compared to both current, and a newly proposed, beam-column design method. The ABAQUS analyses utilizes a validated modeling protocol calibrated against previous testing by the authors, and including residual stresses and strains, and geometric imperfections; as well as, appropriate cross-section dimensions, member length, and boundary conditions. A total of 75 different lipped channel cross-sections have been selected and the capacity of the beam-column member has been examined under 127 combinations …

Cold-Formed Lean Duplex Stainless Steel Rectangular Hollow Sections In Combined Compression And Bending, Yuner Huang, Ben Young
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
An experimental investigation of cold-formed lean duplex stainless steel members in combined compression and minor axis bending is performed. The test specimens were cold-rolled from flat strips of lean duplex stainless steel grade EN 1.4162 into two rectangular hollow sections. Different eccentricities were applied to the rectangular hollow sections, so that a beam-column interaction curve for each series of test can be obtained. Initial overall geometric imperfections of the members were measured prior to testing. The ultimate loads and the failure modes of each specimen were obtained. Failure modes include flexural buckling as well as interaction of local and flexural …

The Impact Of Regulation Fd On The Information Environment: Evidence From The Stock Market Response To Stock Split Announcements, Lili Eng, Joohyung Ha, Sandeep Nabar
Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper examines the information environment effects of regulation fair disclosure (Reg FD). We investigate the stock market response to stock splits in the pre- and post-regulation periods. We find that abnormal returns around split announcement are positive in both periods, but the magnitude of the returns is smaller in the post-FD period relative to the pre-FD period. The difference between the pre- and post-FD period abnormal returns persists even after we control for factors that may affect split announcement returns. We also find that the magnitude of the association between announcement returns, and the unexpected portion of the split …

Runtime Self-Calibrated Temperature-Stress Cosensor For 3-D Integrated Circuits, Chun Zhang, Dian Ma, Changzhi Li, Yiyu Shi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
On-chip temperature and stress sensors are important for runtime system management techniques tackling thermomechanical reliability issues in 3-D integrated circuits (ICs). However, traditional temperature and stress sensor designs require large calibration overhead to improve accuracy, which incurs significant cost for massive production. To address the challenge, in this paper, we propose a novel temperature-stress cosensor design for 3-D ICs. By exploring the inherent reciprocity of temperature and stress mechanisms, it achieves runtime self-calibration such that no dedicated calibration effort is needed. Simulation results show that the cosensor achieves 0.26 C and 0.43 MPa accuracy on average in temperature and stress …

It is known that there is a correlation between a cell membrane potential and the proliferation of the cell. The high proliferation capacity of liver cells can also be attributed to its specific cell membrane potential as liver cell is recognized as one of the most depolarized of all differentiated cells. We hypothesized that this phenomenon can be emphasized by growing liver cells in conducting scaffolds that can increase the electrical communication among the cells. In this article, using tissue engineering techniques, we grew hepatocyte cells in scaffolds with various compositions. It was found that the scaffolds containing conducting polymer …

Generalized Natural Mode Expansion For Arbitrary Electromagnetic Fields, Q. I. Dai, W. C. Chew, L. (Lijun) J. Jiang
Generalized Natural Mode Expansion For Arbitrary Electromagnetic Fields, Q. I. Dai, W. C. Chew, L. (Lijun) J. Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A generalized natural mode expansion theory for investigating arbitrary electromagnetic fields is presented. When an inhomogeneity is bounded with impenetrable boundaries, the field excited by arbitrary sources is expanded with a complete set of eigenmodes, which are classified into trapped modes and exterior modes. As the boundaries tend to infinity, trapped modes remain unchanged, while exterior modes form a continuum. In numerical studies, unbounded systems can be emulated by placing perfectly matched layers (PMLs) at finite extent. Simulation shows that only a few natural modes are prominent in expanding the excited field in a properly functioning device. Such a reduced …

A Cross Layer Routing Scheme For Passive Rfid Tag-To-Tag Communication, Haifeng Niu, S. Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A routing protocol for Passive RFID tag-to-tag networks is not reported in contrast with routing protocols for battery powered mobile wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. In this paper, we provide a cross-layer approach for passive RFID tag-to-tag communication. In the data link layer, we designed the medium access control (MAC) protocol which is suitable for passive tag-to-tag communication. In the network layer, we developed the optimal link cost multipath routing (OLCMR) protocol by using modulation depth as the link cost. Simulation results verify that proposed routing protocol consumes less energy when it is compared to optimum link state routing …

An Energy Efficient Framework For Localization And Coverage In Participatory Urban Sensing, Adnan Khan, Sk Kajal Arefin Imon, Sajal K. Das
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Participatory sensing is an approach to data collection where individuals use their smartphones to capture different scenarios, and upload to a server to create knowledge. A fundamental issue in such data collection process is the coverage of the collected data that reflects how well the targeted area is monitored. To ensure coverage requirements, the traditional approaches require the server to know the location of the participating mobile devices that takes significant amount of energy. In this paper, we propose a novel framework called PLUS for data collection in participatory sensing ensuring partial coverage, where a mobile device does not send …

Fides: A Trust-Based Framework For Secure User Incentivization In Participatory Sensing, Francesco Restuccia, Sajal K. Das
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Participatory sensing (PS) has recently attracted tremendous attention given its potential for a wide variety of sensing applications. Due to the fact that PS systems rely completely on the data provided by the users, incentivizing users' active participation while guaranteeing data reliability is paramount to effectively employ PS systems in practical scenarios. In this paper, we first define a set of attacks which compromise data reliability of existing PS applications. Next, we propose a scalable and secure trust-based framework, called FIDES, which relies on the concept of mobile security agents (MSAs) and Jsang's trust model to rule out incorrect reports …

Efficient And Secure Code Dissemination In Sensor Clouds, Vimal Kumar, Sanjay Kumar Madria
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we present an efficient and secure code dissemination technique aimed at sensor clouds. Previous code dissemination techniques were geared toward traditional wireless sensor networks. They did not take into account, the dynamic nature of a sensor cloud, where the applications running on the motes may not just be updated but changed completely in successive code disseminations. The technique presented in this paper is based upon the observation that a large amount of code is common between applications in wireless sensor networks. Our technique first discovers the code common across various wireless sensor applications. It then distributes this …

This project identifies metrics for measuring the benefit of rail infrastructure projects for key stakeholders. It is important that stakeholders with an interest in community economic development play an active role in the development of the rail network. Economic development activities in both rural and urban settings are essential if a nation is to realize growth and prosperity. Many communities have developed goals and visions to establish an economic development program, but they often fail to achieve their goals due to uncertainties during the project selection and planning process. Communities often select a project from a vast pool of ideas …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
ATP release from erythrocytes in response to reduced oxygen (O2) tension stimulates local vasodilation, enabling these cells to direct perfusion to areas in skeletal muscle in need of O2. Erythrocytes of humans with type 2 diabetes do not release ATP in response to low O2. Both C-peptide and insulin individually inhibit low O2-induced ATP release from healthy human erythrocytes, yet when co administered at physiological concentrations and ratios, no inhibition is seen. Here, we determined: that 1) eryth-rocytes of healthy humans and humans with type 2 diabetes possess a C-peptide receptor (GPR146), 2) the combination of C-peptide and insulin at …

Enhanced Rare-Region Effects In The Contact Process With Long-Range Correlated Disorder, Ahmed K. Ibrahim, Hatem Barghathi, Thomas Vojta
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We investigate the nonequilibrium phase transition in the disordered contact process in the presence of long-range spatial disorder correlations. These correlations greatly increase the probability for finding rare regions that are locally in the active phase while the bulk system is still in the inactive phase. Specifically, if the correlations decay as a power of the distance, the rare-region probability is a stretched exponential of the rare-region size rather than a simple exponential as is the case for uncorrelated disorder. As a result, the Griffiths singularities are enhanced and take a non-power-law form. The critical point itself is of infinite-randomness …
