We report results of a deep all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves from isolated neutron stars in data from the S6 LIGO science run. The search was possible thanks to the computing power provided by the volunteers of the Einstein@Home distributed computing project. We find no significant signal candidate and set the most stringent upper limits to date on the amplitude of gravitational wave signals from the target population. At the frequency of best strain sensitivity, between 170.5 and 171 Hz we set a 90% confidence upper limit of 5.5 x 10-25, while at the high end of …

This paper presents a neural network approach to classify student graduation status based upon selected academic, demographic, and other indicators. A multi-layer feedforward network with backpropagation learning is used as the model framework. The model is trained, tested, and validated using 5100 student samples with data compiled from admissions records and institutional research databases. Nine input variables consist of categorical and numeric data elements including: high school rank, high school quality, standardized test scores, high school faculty assessments, extra-curricular activity score, parent's education status, and time since high school graduation. These inputs and the multi-layer neural network model are used …

Runtime noise management systems typically rely on on-chip noise sensors to accurately capture voltage emergencies. As such, the threshold voltage for noise sensors to report emergencies serves as a critical tuning knob between the system failure rate and false alarms. Unfortunately, the problem of optimal threshold voltage computation remains open in literature despite its importance. The problem is further complicated by process variations, which introduce significant variations in load currents and thus in noise across different chips. A uniform noise margin may not work optimally for all the chips. In this paper, we first formulate the problem of minimizing the …

Over-provisioned femtocell networks can be used to serve indoor locations that see high peak loads, such as airports or train stations. However, networks designed for high peak loads are mostly under-utilized, which is wasteful from an energy-use perspective. This paper introduces a femtocell selective activation problem. We motivate the use of selective activation in femtocell networks using real femtocell power measurements. We formally define the selective activation problem, and introduce GreenFemto, a distributed femtocell selective activation algorithm. We prove that GreenFemto converges to a locally Pareto optimal solution. Detailed simulations of an LTE wireless system are used to demonstrate the …

A novel mechanism of rifampicin (Rif) resistance has recently been reported in Nocardia farcinica. This new mechanism involves the activity of rifampicin monooxygenase (RifMO), a flavin-dependent monooxygenase that catalyzes the hydroxylation of Rif, which is the first step in the degradation pathway. Recombinant RifMO was overexpressed and purified for biochemical analysis. Kinetic characterization revealed that Rif binding is necessary for effective FAD reduction. RifMO exhibits only a 3-fold coenzyme preference for NADPH over NADH. RifMO catalyzes the incorporation of a single oxygen atom forming an unstable intermediate that eventually is converted to 20-N-hydroxy-4-oxo-Rif. Stable C4a-hydroperoxyflavin was not detected by rapid …

We consider the problem of identifying the source of failure in a network after receiving alarms or having observed symptoms. To locate the root cause accurately and timely in a large communication system is challenging because a single fault can often result in a large number of alarms, and multiple faults can occur concurrently. In this paper, we present a new fault localization method using a machine-learning approach. We propose to use logistic regression to study the correlation among network events based on end-to-end measurements. Then based on the regression model, we develop fault hypothesis that best explains the observed …

This paper presents updated estimates of source parameters for GW150914, a binary black-hole coalescence event detected by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) in 2015 [Abbott et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 061102 (2016).]. Abbott et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 241102 (2016).] presented parameter estimation of the source using a 13-dimensional, phenomenological precessing-spin model (precessing IMRPhenom) and an 11-dimensional nonprecessing effective-one body (EOB) model calibrated to numerical-relativity simulations, which forces spin alignment (nonprecessing EOBNR). Here, we present new results that include a 15-dimensional precessing-spin waveform model (precessing EOBNR) developed within the EOB formalism. We find good agreement …

We investigate the zero-temperature superfluid to insulator transitions in a diluted two-dimensional quantum rotor model with particle-hole symmetry. We map the Hamiltonian onto a classical (2+1)-dimensional XY model with columnar disorder which we analyze by means of large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. For dilutions below the lattice percolation threshold, the system undergoes a generic superfluid-Mott glass transition. In contrast to other quantum phase transitions in disordered systems, its critical behavior is of conventional power-law type with universal (dilution-independent) critical exponents z=1.52(3), ν =1.16(5), ß/ν =0.48(2), γ/ν=2.52(4), and η = -0.52(4). These values agree with and improve upon earlier Monte Carlo results …

In recent decades, "post-WIMP" interactions have revolutionized user interfaces (UIs) and led to improved user experiences. However, accounts of post-WIMP UIs typically do not provide theoretical explanations of why these UIs lead to superior performance. In this article, we use Norman's 1986 model of interaction to describe how post-WIMP UIs enhance users' mental representations of UI and task. In addition, we present an empirical study of three UIs; in the study, participants completed a standard three-dimensional object manipulation task. We found that the post-WIMP UI condition led to enhancements of mental representation of UI and task. We conclude that the …

Time-Domain Partial Element Equivalent Circuit Solver Including Non-Linear Magnetic Materials, Daniele Romano, Giulio Antonini, Albert E. Ruehli
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents a novel partial element equivalent circuit formulation to handle 3-D non-linear problems. Since the displacement currents are taken into account, the proposed formulation is not restricted to low-frequency applications, although the propagation delays are neglected. The non-linear problem is solved by means of the Newton-Raphson algorithm. Special care is taken in order to analytically compute the Jacobian of the problem. Furthermore, an adaptive setting of the time step is adopted in the transient analysis allowing to maintain the size of the time step as large as possible while preserving the accuracy. Computed results for a closed magnetic …

Cranioplasty is the surgical repair of a deficiency or deformity of the skull. The purpose of cranioplasty is to provide protection for the brain following cranial surgery, and to offer relief to psychological disadvantages while increasing social performance. There are several materials that had been used for cranioplasty, but an ideal product has yet to be developed, hence the ongoing research into biologic and non-biologic alternatives to the existing materials. This article critiques the products currently used for cranioplasty in order to facilitate the development of new materials, which can improve patient outcomes.

Magic Wavelength For The Hydrogen 1s-2s Transition: Contribution Of The Continuum And The Reduced-Mass Correction, Chandra M. Adhikari, A. Kawasaki, Ulrich D. Jentschura

Recently, we studied the magic wavelength for the atomic hydrogen 1S-2S transition [A. Kawasaki, Phys. Rev. A 92, 042507 (2015)PLRAAN1050-294710.1103/PhysRevA.92.042507]. An explicit summation over virtual atomic states of the discrete part of the hydrogen spectrum was performed to evaluate the atomic polarizability. In this paper, we supplement the contribution of the continuum part of the spectrum and add the reduced-mass correction. The magic wavelength, at which the lowest-order ac Stark shifts of the 1S and 2S states are equal, is found to be 514.6 nm. The ac Stark shift at the magic wavelength is -221.6Hz/(kW/cm2), and the slope …

We compare GW150914 directly to simulations of coalescing binary black holes in full general relativity, including several performed specifically to reproduce this event. Our calculations go beyond existing semianalytic models, because for all simulations - including sources with two independent, precessing spins - we perform comparisons which account for all the spin-weighted quadrupolar modes, and separately which account for all the quadrupolar and octopolar modes. Consistent with the posterior distributions reported by Abbott et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 241102 (2016)] (at the 90% credible level), we find the data are compatible with a wide range of nonprecessing and …

High-Frequency Instabilities Of Stationary Crossflow Vortices In A Hypersonic Boundary Layer, Fei Li, Meelan Choudhari, Pedro Paredes-Gonzalez, Lian Duan
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Hypersonic boundary layer flows over a circular cone at moderate incidence angle can support strong crossflow instability in between the windward and leeward rays on the plane of symmetry. Due to more efficient excitation of stationary crossflow vortices by surface roughness, such boundary layer flows may transition to turbulence via rapid amplification of the high-frequency secondary instabilities of finite-amplitude stationary crossflow vortices. The amplification characteristics of these secondary instabilities are investigated for crossflow vortices generated by an azimuthally periodic array of roughness elements over a 7° half-angle circular cone in a Mach 6 free stream. The analysis is based on …

Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) is an additive manufacturing process in which material is deposited by blowing powdered metal into a melt pool formed by a laser beam. When fabricating parts, the substrate is subjected to motion control such that the melt pool traces a prescribed path to form each part layer. Advantages of LMD include relatively efficient powder usage, the ability to create functionally-graded parts and the ability to repair high-value parts. The process, however, is sensitive to variations in process parameters and a need for feedback measurements and closed-loop control has been recognized in the literature [1, 2]. To …

This paper investigates modal analysis as a validation technique for additively manufactured parts. The Frequency Response Function (FRF) is dependent on both the geometry and the material properties of the part as well as the presence of any defects. This allows the FRF to serve as a “fingerprint” for a given part of given quality. Once established, the FRF can be used to qualify subsequently printed parts. This approach is particularly attractive for metal parts, due to the lower damping as well as use in high-value applications where failure is unacceptable. To evaluate the efficacy of the technique, tensile specimens …

This paper is a continuation of the recent study by Bohner et al [9] on oscillation properties of nonlinear third order functional differential equation under the assumption that the second order differential equation is nonoscillatory. We consider both the delayed and advanced case of the studied equation. The presented results correct and extend earlier ones. Several illustrative examples are included.

We report on a comprehensive all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency band 100-1500 Hz and with a frequency time derivative in the range of [-1.18,+1.00] x 10-8 Hz/s. Such a signal could be produced by a nearby spinning and slightly nonaxisymmetric isolated neutron star in our galaxy. This search uses the data from the initial LIGO sixth science run and covers a larger parameter space with respect to any past search. A Loosely Coherent detection pipeline was applied to follow up weak outliers in both Gaussian (95% recovery rate) and non-Gaussian (75% recovery rate) bands. No …
Nonresonant Two-Photon Transitions In Length And Velocity Gauges, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Nonresonant Two-Photon Transitions In Length And Velocity Gauges, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We reexamine the invariance of two-photon transition matrix elements and corresponding two-photon Rabi frequencies under the "gauge" transformation from the length to the velocity gauge. It is shown that gauge invariance, in the most general sense, only holds at exact resonance, for both one-color as well as two-color absorption. The arguments leading to this conclusion are supported by analytic calculations which express the matrix elements in terms of hypergeometric functions, and ramified by a "master identity" which is fulfilled by off-diagonal matrix elements of the Schrödinger propagator under the transformation from the velocity to the length gauge. The study of …

Theory Of Noncontact Friction For Atom-Surface Interactions, Ulrich D. Jentschura, M. Janke, Maarten F M De Kieviet
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The noncontact (van der Waals) friction is an interesting physical effect, which has been the subject of controversial scientific discussion. The direct friction term due to the thermal fluctuations of the electromagnetic field leads to a friction force proportional to 1/Z5 (where Z is the atom-wall distance). The backaction friction term takes into account the feedback of thermal fluctuations of the atomic dipole moment onto the motion of the atom and scales as 1/Z8. We investigate noncontact friction effects for the interactions of hydrogen, ground-state helium, and metastable helium atoms with α-quartz (SiO2), gold (Au), …

This paper presents a full three-dimensional (3D) comparison between experiment and theory for 24 MeV O8+ single ionization of the 2s ground state of lithium and the 2p excited state. Two theoretical approximations are examined: the three-body continuum distorted-wave (3DW) and three-body continuum distorted-wave-eikonal initial state (3DW-EIS). Normally, there is a significant difference between these two approaches and the 3DW-EIS is in much better agreement with experiment. In this case, there is very little difference between the two approaches and both are in very good agreement with experiment. For the excited 2p state, the 3D cross sections would exhibit …
Contact Process With Temporal Disorder, Hatem Barghathi, Thomas Vojta, José A. Hoyos
Contact Process With Temporal Disorder, Hatem Barghathi, Thomas Vojta, José A. Hoyos
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We investigate the influence of time-varying environmental noise, i.e., temporal disorder, on the nonequilibrium phase transition of the contact process. Combining a real-time renormalization group, scaling theory, and large scale Monte-Carlo simulations in one and two dimensions, we show that the temporal disorder gives rise to an exotic critical point. At criticality, the effective noise amplitude diverges with increasing time scale, and the probability distribution of the density becomes infinitely broad, even on a logarithmic scale. Moreover, the average density and survival probability decay only logarithmically with time. This infinite-noise critical behavior can be understood as the temporal counterpart of …
Self “Sensor”Ship: An Interdisciplinary Investigation Of The Persuasiveness, Social Implications, And Ethical Design Of Self-Sensoring Prescriptive Applications, Denise A. Baker
Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
This dissertation research investigates the social implications of computing artifacts that make use of sensor driven self-quantification to implicitly or explicitly direct user behaviors. These technologies are referred to here as self-sensoring prescriptive applications (SSPA’s). This genre of technological application has a strong presence in healthcare as a means to monitor health, modify behavior, improve health outcomes, and reduce medical costs. However, the commercial sector is quickly adopting SSPA’s as a means to monitor and/or modify consumer behaviors as well (Swan, 2013). These wearable devices typically monitor factors such as movement, heartrate, and respiration; ostensibly to guide the users to …
Analysis Of The Gauss-Bingham Distribution For Attitude Uncertainty Propagation, Jacob E. Darling, Kyle J. Demars
Analysis Of The Gauss-Bingham Distribution For Attitude Uncertainty Propagation, Jacob E. Darling, Kyle J. Demars
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Attitude uncertainty quantification typically requires a small angle assumption, and thus an inherent small uncertainty assumption, to be made. This small angle assumption can be eliminated by employing the Bingham distribution to represent the attitude uncertainty in the attitude quaternion directly. Moreover, an extension to the Bingham distribution, termed the Gauss-Bingham distribution, can be used to represent correlated attitude quaternion and angular velocity uncertainty to enable attitude uncertainty propagation. In order to evaluate the potential accuracy gain using the Gauss-Bingham distribution for attitude uncertainty quantification, the Gauss-Bingham distribution method for attitude uncertainty propagation is compared to the propagation step of …
