Benzophenone-3 (also known as BP-3 or oxybenzone) is added to sunscreens, plastics, and some coatings to filter UV radiation. The suspected endocrine disruptor BP-3 has been detected in the air and settled dust of homes and is expected to redistribute from its original sources to other indoor compartments, including clothing. Given its physical and chemical properties, we hypothesized that dermal uptake from clothing could contribute to the body burden of this compound. First, cotton shirts were exposed to air at an elevated concentration of BP-3 for 32 days; the final air concentration was 4.4 μg/m3. Next, three participants wore the …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Although patients with primary insomnia experience sleep disruption, they are able to maintain normal performance on a variety of cognitive tasks. This observation suggests that insomnia may be a condition where predisposing factors simultaneously increase the risk for insomnia and also mitigate against the deleterious consequences of waking. To gain insight into processes that might regulate sleep and buffer neuronal circuits during sleep loss, we manipulated three genes, fat facet (faf), highwire (hiw) and the GABA receptor Resistance to dieldrin (Rdl), that were differentially modulated in a Drosophila model of insomnia. Our results indicate …

Powell, Nikesh S. Dattani, Rene F. K. Spada, Francisco B. C. Machado, Hans Lischka, Richard Dawes

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The association/dissociation reaction path for ozone (O2 + O ↔ O3) is notoriously difficult to describe accurately using ab initio electronic structure theory, due to the importance of both strong and dynamic electron correlations. Experimentally, spectroscopic studies of the highest lying recorded vibrational states combined with the observed negative temperature dependence of the kinetics of oxygen isotope exchange reactions confirm that the reaction is barrierless, consistent with the latest potential energy surfaces. Previously reported potentials based on Davidson-corrected internally contracted multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) suffer from a spurious reef feature in the entrance channel even when extrapolated …

Gw170817: Observation Of Gravitational Waves From A Binary Neutron Star Inspiral, Benjamin P. Abbott, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

On August 17, 2017 at 12-41:04 UTC the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo gravitational-wave detectors made their first observation of a binary neutron star inspiral. The signal, GW170817, was detected with a combined signal-to-noise ratio of 32.4 and a false-alarm-rate estimate of less than one per 8.0 x 104 years. We infer the component masses of the binary to be between 0.86 and 2.26 M⊙, in agreement with masses of known neutron stars. Restricting the component spins to the range inferred in binary neutron stars, we find the component masses to be in the range 1.17-1.60 M …

Generalized Debye Sources-Based Efie Solver On Subdivision Surfaces, Xin Fu, Jie Li, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Balasubramaniam Shanker Oct 2017

Generalized Debye Sources-Based Efie Solver On Subdivision Surfaces, Xin Fu, Jie Li, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Balasubramaniam Shanker

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The electric field integral equation is a well-known workhorse for obtaining fields scattered by a perfect electric conducting object. As a result, the nuances and challenges of solving this equation have been examined for a while. Two recent papers motivate the effort presented in this paper. Unlike traditional work that uses equivalent currents defined on surfaces, recent research proposes a technique that results in well-conditioned systems by employing generalized Debye sources (GDS) as unknowns. In a complementary effort, some of us developed a method that exploits the same representation for both the geometry (subdivision surface representations) and functions defined on …

The Comprehensive Handling Of Safety In An Autonomous Robot Capstone Project, John G. Ciezki, Steve Eugene Watkins Sep 2017

The Comprehensive Handling Of Safety In An Autonomous Robot Capstone Project, John G. Ciezki, Steve Eugene Watkins

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A systematic approach to safety issues is described in the context of an autonomous robot capstone project. The treatment of safety should not be an ad hoc or an after-thought aspect of design projects. Engineering students need to consider safety as an integral component of the design process and to identify and address hazards systematically in each stage of project work. Appropriate actions include researching professional standards and regulations, incorporating safety best practices, developing safety checklists and operating protocols, and providing significant safety documentation. Formal safety components were added to a capstone design project for electrical and computer engineering undergraduates …

Realistic Models For Characterizing The Performance Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Ken Goss, Riccardo Musmeci, Simone Silvestri Sep 2017

Realistic Models For Characterizing The Performance Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Ken Goss, Riccardo Musmeci, Simone Silvestri

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly being adopted for military and civilian applications. UAVs available on the market are well known to be resource constrained, especially in terms of available energy. As a result, it is very challenging to predict the critical performance characteristics of a UAV, such as flight time or the ability of a UAV to complete a mission, given the system parameters. Nevertheless, such predictions would have several benefits, such as improving the effectiveness of mission planners and optimization algorithms in general, as well as enabling researchers to perform more realistic simulations. The goal of this paper …

Long-Range Interactions Of Hydrogen Atoms In Excited States. Iii. Ns−1s Interactions For N ≥ 3, Chandra M. Adhikari, V. Debierre, Ulrich D. Jentschura

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The long-range interaction of excited neutral atoms has a number of interesting and surprising properties such as the prevalence of long-range oscillatory tails and the emergence of numerically large van der Waals C6 coefficients. Furthermore, the energetically quasidegenerate nP states require special attention and lead to mathematical subtleties. Here we analyze the interaction of excited hydrogen atoms in nS states (3 ≤ n ≤ 12) with ground-state hydrogen atoms and find that the C6 coefficients roughly grow with the fourth power of the principal quantum number and can reach values in excess of 240000 (in atomic units) for states …

All-Sky Search For Periodic Gravitational Waves In The O1 Ligo Data, Benjamin P. Abbott, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website. Sep 2017

All-Sky Search For Periodic Gravitational Waves In The O1 Ligo Data, Benjamin P. Abbott, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report on an all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency band 20-475 Hz and with a frequency time derivative in the range of [-1.0,+0.1] x 10-8 Hz/s. Such a signal could be produced by a nearby spinning and slightly nonaxisymmetric isolated neutron star in our galaxy. This search uses the data from Advanced LIGO's first observational run, O1. No periodic gravitational wave signals were observed, and upper limits were placed on their strengths. The lowest upper limits on worst-case (linearly polarized) strain amplitude h0 are ∼4 x 10-25 near 170 Hz. For a circularly …

Exploring Potential Flaws And Dangers Involving Machine Learning Technology, David Nicholas Skoff Aug 2017

Exploring Potential Flaws And Dangers Involving Machine Learning Technology, David Nicholas Skoff

Missouri S&T’s Peer to Peer

This paper seeks to explore the ways in which machine learning and AI may influence the world in the future and the potential for the technology to be misused or exploited. In 1959 Arthur Samuel defined machine learning as “the field of study that gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed” (Munoz). This paper will also seek to find out if there is merit to the current worry that robots will take over some jobs based in cognitive abilities. In the past, a human was required to perform these jobs, but with the rise of more complex …

The Continuous Synthesis Of Pd Supported On Fe3o4 Nanoparticles: A Highly Effective And Magnetic Catalyst For Co Oxidation, Hany A. Elazab, Sherif Moussa, Kendra W. Brinkley, B. Frank Gupton, M. Samy El-Shall

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report a facile approach used for the simultaneous reduction and synthesis of a well dispersed magnetically separable palladium nanoparticle supported on magnetite (Pd/Fe3O4 nanoparticles) via continuous flow synthesis under microwave irradiation conditions, using a Wave Craft's microwave flow reactor commercially known as Arrhenius One, which can act as a unique process for the synthesis of highly active catalysts for carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation catalysis. The prepared catalysts are magnetic, which is an advantage in the separation process of the catalyst from the reaction medium. The separation process is achieved by applying a strong external magnetic field …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have measured fully differential cross sections for electron capture in 75 keV p+H2 collisions with subsequent dissociation of the intermediate molecular H2+ ion by vibrational excitation using different projectile coherence lengths. Data were obtained for two molecular orientations as a function of projectile scattering angle. Two types of interference, single- and molecular two-center interference, were identified. The two-center interference structure is phase shifted by π compared to what we expected. Furthermore, the presence of projectile coherence effects could be reconfirmed.

Automated Breast Cancer Diagnosis Using Deep Learning And Region Of Interest Detection (Bc-Droid), Richard Platania, Jian Zhang, Shayan Shams, Kisung Lee, Seungwon Yang, Seung Jong Park

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Detection of suspicious regions in mammogram images and the subsequent diagnosis of these regions remains a challenging problem in the medical world. There still exists an alarming rate of misdiagnosis of breast cancer. This results in both over treatment through incorrect positive diagnosis of cancer and under treatment through overlooked cancerous masses. Convolutional neural networks have shown strong applicability to various image datasets, enabling detailed features to be learned from the data and, as a result, the ability to classify these images at extremely low error rates. In order to overcome the difficulty in diagnosing breast cancer from mammogram images, …

Quantum Oscillations In The Anomalous Spin Density Wave State Of Feas, Daniel J. Campbell, Chris Eckberg, Kefeng Wang, Limin Wang, Halyna Hodovanets, Dave Graf, David Parker, Johnpierre Paglione

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Quantum oscillations in the binary antiferromagnetic metal FeAs are presented and compared to theoretical predictions for the electronic band structure in the anomalous spin density wave state of this material. Demonstrating a method for growing single crystals out of Bi flux, we utilize the highest quality FeAs to perform torque magnetometry experiments up to 35 T, using rotations of field angle in two planes to provide evidence for one electron and one hole band in the magnetically ordered state. The resulting picture agrees with previous experimental evidence for multiple carriers at low temperatures, but the exact Fermi surface shape differs …

Development Of A Hybrid Manufacturing Process For Precision Metal Parts, Leon Hill, Todd E. Sparks, Frank W. Liou Aug 2017

Development Of A Hybrid Manufacturing Process For Precision Metal Parts, Leon Hill, Todd E. Sparks, Frank W. Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper summarizes the research and development of a hybrid manufacturing process to produce fully dense metal parts with CNC-level precision. High performance metals, such as titanium alloys, nickel superalloys, tool steels, stainless steels, etc. can benefit from this process. Coupling the additive and the subtractive processes into a multi-axis workstation, the hybrid process, can produce and repair metal parts with accuracy. The surface quality of the final product is similar to the industrial milling capability. To achieve such a system, issues of the metal deposition process and the automated process planning of the hybrid manufacturing process will be discussed.

Aluminum Matrix Syntactic Foam Fabricated With Additive Manufacturing, M. Spratt, Joseph William Newkirk, K. Chandrashekhara Aug 2017

Aluminum Matrix Syntactic Foam Fabricated With Additive Manufacturing, M. Spratt, Joseph William Newkirk, K. Chandrashekhara

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Syntactic foams are lightweight structural composites with hollow reinforcing particles embedded in a soft matrix. These materials have applications in transportation, packaging, and armor due to properties such as relatively high specific stiffness, acoustic dampening, and impact absorption. Aluminum matrices are the most widely studied of metal matrix syntactic foams, but there is little to no research in regards to processing the foams with additive manufacturing. It is theorized that the fast cooling rates and limited kinetic energy input of additive could reduce two issues commonly associated with processing syntactic foams: microsphere flotation in the melt and microsphere fracture during …

Thermal Modeling Of 304l Stainless Steel Selective Laser Melting, Lan Li, Cody S. Lough, Adriane Repogle, Douglas A. Bristow, Robert G. Landers, Edward C. Kinzel

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper describes the continuum thermal modeling of the Selective Laser Melting (SLM) process for 304L stainless steel using Abaqus. Temperature dependent thermal properties are obtained from literature and incorporated into the model capturing the change from powder to fully dense stainless steel. The thermal model predicts the temperature history for multi-track scans under different process parameters (laser power, effective scanning speed, hatch spacing) which is used to extract the melt-pool size, solidification rate, and temperature gradients. These are compared to experimental results obtained from a Renishaw AM250 in terms of the melt pool size, grain structure, and cell spacing. …

Defects Classification Of Laser Metal Deposition Using Acoustic Emission Sensor, Haythem Gaja, Frank W. Liou Aug 2017

Defects Classification Of Laser Metal Deposition Using Acoustic Emission Sensor, Haythem Gaja, Frank W. Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Laser metal deposition (LMD) is an advanced additive manufacturing (AM) process used to build or repair metal parts layer by layer for a range of different applications. Any presence of deposition defects in the part produced causes change in the mechanical properties and might cause failure to the part. In this work, defects monitoring system was proposed to detect and classify defects in real time using an acoustic emission (AE) sensor and an unsupervised pattern recognition analysis. Time domain and frequency domain, and relevant descriptors were used in the classification process to improve the characterization and the discrimination of the …

Review Of Am Simulation Validation Techniques, Aaron Flood, Frank W. Liou Aug 2017

Review Of Am Simulation Validation Techniques, Aaron Flood, Frank W. Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Due to the complexity of Additive Manufacturing (AM), it can require many trial runs to obtain processing parameters which produce a quality build. Because of this trial and error process, the drive for simulations of AM has grown significantly. Simulations only become useful to researchers if it can be shown that they are true representations of the physical process being simulated. All simulations have different methods of validation to show that they are an accurate representations of the process. This paper explores the various methodologies for validation of laser based metal AM simulations, focusing mainly on the modeling of the …

Inverse Design Of Perfectly Transmitting Eigenchannels In Scattering Media, Milan Koirala, Raktim Sarma, Hui Cao, Alexey Yamilov Aug 2017

Inverse Design Of Perfectly Transmitting Eigenchannels In Scattering Media, Milan Koirala, Raktim Sarma, Hui Cao, Alexey Yamilov

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Light-matter interactions inside a turbid medium can be controlled by tailoring the spatial distribution of energy density throughout the system. Wavefront shaping allows selective coupling of incident light to different transmission eigenchannels, producing dramatically different spatial intensity profiles. In contrast to the density of transmission eigenvalues that is dictated by the universal bimodal distribution, the spatial structures of the eigenchannels are not universal and depend on the confinement geometry of the system. Here, we develop and verify a model for the transmission eigenchannel with the corresponding eigenvalue close to unity. By projecting the original problem of two-dimensional diffusion in a …

Bounding The Moment Deficit Rate On Crustal Faults Using Geodetic Data: Methods, Jeremy Maurer, Paul Segall, Andrew M. Bradley Aug 2017

Bounding The Moment Deficit Rate On Crustal Faults Using Geodetic Data: Methods, Jeremy Maurer, Paul Segall, Andrew M. Bradley

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The geodetically derived interseismic moment deficit rate (MDR) provides a first-order constraint on earthquake potential and can play an important role in seismic hazard assessment, but quantifying uncertainty in MDR is a challenging problem that has not been fully addressed. We establish criteria for reliable MDR estimators, evaluate existing methods for determining the probability density of MDR, and propose and evaluate new methods. Geodetic measurements moderately far from the fault provide tighter constraints on MDR than those nearby. Previously used methods can fail catastrophically under predictable circumstances. The bootstrap method works well with strong data constraints on MDR, but can …

Recovery Of Phosphate Minerals From Plant Tailings Using Direct Froth Flotation, Ashraf Alsafasfeh, Lana Z. Alagha Aug 2017

Recovery Of Phosphate Minerals From Plant Tailings Using Direct Froth Flotation, Ashraf Alsafasfeh, Lana Z. Alagha

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Wastes produced from the phosphate industry presents many challenges due to the high economic and environmental impacts involved with their disposal. However, the relative scarcity of high-grade phosphate ores has driven researchers to recover and recycle these valuable wastes (secondary sources). The goal of this study was to investigate the possibility of upgrading the P2O5 content in tailings produced from a phosphorous production plant using direct froth flotation. Characterization assays, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and mineral liberation analysis (MLA), were first conducted to identify the mineralogical and morphological characteristics of …
