Application Of Small-Scale, Movable-Bed River Models To Channel Improvement Studies Of The Middle Mississippi River, Eugene H. Woodman Jan 1938

Application Of Small-Scale, Movable-Bed River Models To Channel Improvement Studies Of The Middle Mississippi River, Eugene H. Woodman

Professional Degree Theses

"This paper deals primarily with the use of small-scale models in the study of plans for improving the channel for navigation in several reaches of the Middle Mississippi River. However, it was considered expedient to include a discussion of hydraulic model experimentation in general before dealing with specific cases, in order that the reader might obtain the greatest possible satisfaction from the discussion.

The first part of this paper includes: a discussion of the theory of models, wherein the value and utility of models are demonstrated; the application of models to hydraulic problems, including the requirements for a model to …

Sinking And Equipping Inclined Shafts Of More Than 60 Degree Dip, Wilford Stillman Wright Jan 1938

Sinking And Equipping Inclined Shafts Of More Than 60 Degree Dip, Wilford Stillman Wright

Professional Degree Theses

"The advisability of putting down an inclined shaft in preference to the vertical type should be carefully considered before a definite choice is made. One, of course, presupposes the existence of a dipping ore body that is to be prospected or developed for subsequent mining. Unless a vein has been previously developed there is no certainty that it maintains the same degree of pitch for any great distance below surfaces. If straight, the proposed inclined shaft may depart considerably from the downward course of the vein with the result, that, at least some of the anticipated advantages of the shaft …

Hydrography Of The Larger Springs Of The Ozark Region Of Missouri, Warwick Lewis Doll Jan 1938

Hydrography Of The Larger Springs Of The Ozark Region Of Missouri, Warwick Lewis Doll

Professional Degree Theses

"This thesis is based upon a study of the larger springs of the Ozark Region of Missouri and is designed to answer many requests for information about the large springs.

Special studies were made to determine the probable location and approximate area of the drainage areas of the large springs (previous writers have referred to the drainage areas as being “very large" or "enormous", apparently, without any very definite idea as to the extent or the drainage areas). The average run-off per square mile from the assumed drainage area, herein called the "spring factor", was determined for the largest springs. …

A Comparison Of Methods For The Determination Of Iron In Clays And Related Ceramic Materials, Hoyt Gillum Thompson Jan 1938

A Comparison Of Methods For The Determination Of Iron In Clays And Related Ceramic Materials, Hoyt Gillum Thompson

Masters Theses

"Iron is always present in clay and ceramic products. This element has a definite effect upon the properties of substances containing it, hence it is important for the ceramist to know the exact amount of this element present in a ceramic material. Many methods have been devised for the precise determination of iron, both in large and small amounts. Of the many methods used, the American Society for Testing Materials has listed only two for the examination of clays, refractories, and similar material...However the amounts of iron for which these methods are most suitable are not given. Nor does the …

The Sorption Of Metallic Ions By Wood Pulp During Purification, Harold Edgar Boyd Jan 1938

The Sorption Of Metallic Ions By Wood Pulp During Purification, Harold Edgar Boyd

Masters Theses

"The cost of producing cellulose acetate, and the difficulties attending its dissolving, plasticizing, and application to specific uses are problems which must be investigated before the ultimate commercial development of the material can be realized. The price of the cellulose used as raw material for acetylation is one of the primary factors influencing the cost of the finished product. At present, cotton linters constitutes the chief practical souce [sic] of acetate, being almost pure alpha-cellulose, and cheaper than staple cotton, our other source of high alpha-cellulose, Wood pulp is the only other material offering promise as a substitute for cotton, …

Line And Grade Control Of The Subaqueous Midtown Hudson Tunnel, Lauren Preston Tuttle Jan 1937

Line And Grade Control Of The Subaqueous Midtown Hudson Tunnel, Lauren Preston Tuttle

Professional Degree Theses

"The entire system unifies all Preliminary Survey, Construction Control, and Independent Traverse work; bringing them under one common balanced system; thus, their precise relation is definitely established regardless of which side of the Hudson River the unit occurs. The establishing of a complete system is a subject within itself, and as this paper deals with the method of obtaining and carrying to completion the method of control for the river section of the tunnel, we shall limit our reference to the Triangulation system to the River Quadrangle"--Triangulation System. General, page 1.

Manufacture And Application Of Rubber Belting, Lynn Harbison Jan 1937

Manufacture And Application Of Rubber Belting, Lynn Harbison

Professional Degree Theses

"Rubber belting is one of the major products manufactured by the rubber companies and a wide variety of applications is found among many industries. These applications require belts which will meet the needs of the purchasing party both from a cost and a maintenance viewpoint. Belts are installed and operated for two basic purposes, namely, transmission of power and conveyance of level...Transmission and conveyor belting are fundamentally the same for one important factor; this factor is power transmission. Other data are necessary to make and select a belt of the proper type, construction and size. The subject of rubber being …

The Development Of A New Process For The Manufacture Of Insulating Refractories, Miles E. Tyrrell Jan 1937

The Development Of A New Process For The Manufacture Of Insulating Refractories, Miles E. Tyrrell

Bachelors Theses

"In as much as the grinding of insulating brick to size after the firing operation is one of the most important and at the same time one of the most expensive operations involved in their manufacture, it was felt that the development of a method for manufacture of insulating brick which would do away with the necessity of grinding after firing would be a very worth while project. With this object in mind it was decided that the logical method would be to incorporate the pore structure in the mix while green and at the same time to add some …

Drilling For Placer Deposits Of Gold And Platinum In The Jungles Of Colombia, Theodore Owen Seiberling Jan 1936

Drilling For Placer Deposits Of Gold And Platinum In The Jungles Of Colombia, Theodore Owen Seiberling

Professional Degree Theses

"In the following report I have made no attempt to "white-wash" or to exaggerate conditions as I found them in the Choco. In plain language I have endeavored to give the reader a picture of the obstacles met, and overcome by the engineer in his search for placer deposits of gold and platinum with the prospect drill in the jungle"--Foreword, page 1.
