Effect Of Thin Film Confined Between Two Dissimilar Solids On Interfacial Thermal Resistance, Zhi Liang, Hai-Lung Tsai
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A Non-Equilibrium Molecular Dynamics Model is Developed to Investigate How a Thin Film Confined between Two Dissimilar Solids Affects the Thermal Transport Across the Material Interface. for Two Highly Dissimilar (Phonon Frequency Mismatched) Solids, It is Found that the Insertion of a Thin Film between Them Can Greatly Enhance Thermal Transport Across the Material Interface by a Factor of 2.3 If the Thin Film Has One of the Following Characteristics: (1)a Multi-Atom-Thick Thin Film of Which the Phonon Density of States (DOS) Bridges the Two Different Phonon DOSs for the Solid on Each Side of the Thin Film; (2)a Single-Atom-Thick …
Pulmonary Diffusional Screening And The Scaling Laws Of Mammalian Metabolic Rates, Chen Hou, Michael Mayo
Pulmonary Diffusional Screening And The Scaling Laws Of Mammalian Metabolic Rates, Chen Hou, Michael Mayo
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
Theoretical considerations suggest that the mammalian metabolic rate is linearly proportional to the surface areas of mitochondria, capillary, and alveolar membranes. However, the scaling exponents of these surface areas to the mammals' body mass (approximately 0.9-1) are higher than exponents of the resting metabolic rate (RMR) to body mass (approximately 0.75), although similar to the one of exercise metabolic rate (EMR); the underlying physiological cause of this mismatch remains unclear. The analysis presented here shows that discrepancies between the scaling exponents of RMR and the relevant surface areas may originate from, at least for the system of alveolar membranes in …

Assessment Of Corrosion Potential Of Coarse Backfill Aggregates For Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls, Anita Thapalia, David M. Borrok, Soheil Nazarian, Jose Garibay
Assessment Of Corrosion Potential Of Coarse Backfill Aggregates For Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls, Anita Thapalia, David M. Borrok, Soheil Nazarian, Jose Garibay
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The service life of mechanically stabilized earth walls depends on the rate of corrosion of the metallic reinforcements used in their construction. The assessment of corrosion potential requires an accurate evaluation of pH, resistivity, and sulfate and chloride concentrations of aqueous solutions in contact with the surrounding aggregate. Highway agencies tend to use larger aggregates that contain only a small amount of fine material (passing the Number 40 sieve) in the backfill. Evaluation of the electrochemical parameters of coarse aggregates is challenging because traditional evaluation methods call for the use of fine material. In this study, the suitability of traditional …

The Role Of Eddies Inside Pores In The Transition From Darcy To Forchheimer Flows, Kuldeep Chaudhary, M. Bayani Cardenas, Wen Deng, Philip C. Bennett
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We studied the role of intra-pore eddies, from viscous to inertial flows, in modifying continuum-scale flow inside pores. Flow regimes spanning Reynolds Number Re ∼ 0 to 1350 are divided into three zones - one zone follows Darcy flow, and the other two zones describe non-Darcy or Forchheimer flow. During viscous flows, i.e., Re < 1, stationary eddies occupy about 1/5 of the pore volume. Eddies grow when Re > 1, and their growth leads to the deviation from Darcy's law and the emergence of Forchheimer flow manifested as a characteristic reduction in the apparent hydraulic conductivity Ka. The reduction in Ka is due to the narrowing of the flow channel which is …

Surfactant Induced Reservoir Wettability Alteration: Recent Theoretical And Experimental Advances In Enhanced Oil Recovery, Yefei Wang, Huaimin Xu, Weizhao Yu, Baojun Bai, Xinwang Song, Jichao Zhang
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Reservoir wettability plays an important role in various oil recovery processes. The origin and evolution of reservoir wettability were critically reviewed to better understand the complexity of wettability due to interactions in crude oil-brine-rock system, with introduction of different wetting states and their influence on fluid distribution in pore spaces. The effect of wettability on oil recovery of waterflooding was then summarized from past and recent research to emphasize the importance of wettability in oil displacement by brine. The mechanism of wettability alteration by different surfactants in both carbonate and sandstone reservoirs was analyzed, concerning their distinct surface chemistry, and …

Work In Progress - Virtual Facilitation And Procedural Knowledge Education, Ray Luechtefeld, Steve Eugene Watkins
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Engineering students acquire both conceptual and procedural knowledge as part of their education. While conceptual knowledge, such as understanding why certain design practices are required or having knowledge of the general principles of engineering development, is essential, procedural knowledge to enact specific engineering practices is also needed. This kind of knowledge, such as balancing chemical equations, solving calculus problems, or finding Thevenin-Norton equivalents, is usually taught through rote problem solving, sometimes with the guidance of teaching assistants or aid from the instructor if students find themselves "stuck". However, a Virtual Facilitator, designed to help students develop team skills, can also …

Regeneration Of Carbon Aerogel Exhausted In Water Purification, Sanjay Tewari
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Carbon has been used electrochemically in various forms for water treatment and the carbon aerogel is one of them. Carbon Aerogels (CA) are used as electrodes due to their high surface capacity and high electrical conductivity. They are also known as Carbon Nanofoams (CNF). CA electrodes attract oppositely charged ions that are nearby. This concept is known as Capacitive De-Ionization (CDI). The use of CA in CDI for water purification is well documented, but not much work has been done on regeneration of CA electrodes. Once saturated, these electrodes lose their ability to adsorb additional ions and it must be …

Computer programming education helps to prepare pre-college students to function in a technology-based society and to promote technical careers. However, opportunities are limited for pre-college students to learn computer programming and effective programming instruction can be difficult. A set of introductory, self-paced tutorials in Squeak Smalltalk has been developed for students in high school and middle school. This work describes two supplementary exercises that address the needs of new learners, especially those at younger ages. Students are given tools for drawing and image manipulation. The optional exercises integrate basic concepts while allowing more interactivity and customization through creative "play." © …

Simulations Of Pulse Signals With X-Parameters, Nick K.H. Huang, Lijun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Nonlinearity is becoming increasingly important to IC technologies. From the PHD formalism, X-parameter models provide an accurate frequency-domain method under large-signal operating points to characterize their nonlinear behaviors. In this work, X-parameter models are investigated to handle time-domain pulse signals which is critical to IC signal integrity but was not studied before. Two representative circuits, an analog LNA and a digital CMOS buffer, were employed to characterize the X-parameter performance. The results obtained in this paper provide the first hand data for pulse signal responses of X-parameters in signal integrity modelings. © 2011 IEEE.

Mixed Integral-Differential Skin-Effect Models For Peec Electromagnetic Solver, Giulio Antonini, Albert E. Ruehli, Lijun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Efficient modeling of the broadband skin-effect for conducting 3D shapes is a challenging issue for the solution of large electromagnetic problems. The inclusion of such models in an EM solver can be very costly in compute time and memory requirements. Several properties of a model are desirable for the solution of practical problems such as the broadband frequency domain or the time domain applicability. In this paper, we present a model which meets some of these challenges and which is suitable for the PEEC solution method. © 2011 IEEE.

Several compact, low profile and metal-attachable RFID tag antennas with a loop-fed method are proposed for UHF RFID systems. The structure of the proposed antennas comprise of two parts: (1) The radiator part consists of two shorted patches, which can be treated as two quarter-wave patch antennas or a cavity. (2) A small loop printed on the paper serves as the feeding structure. The small loop provides the needed inductance for the tag and is connected to the RFID chip. The input impedance of the antenna can be easily adjusted by changing loop dimensions. The antenna has the compact size …

The gravitational-wave (GW) sky may include nearby pointlike sources as well as stochastic backgrounds. We perform two directional searches for persistent GWs using data from the LIGO S5 science run: one optimized for pointlike sources and one for arbitrary extended sources. Finding no evidence to support the detection of GWs, we present 90% confidence level (C.L.) upper-limit maps of GW strain power with typical values between 2 - 20 x 10-50 strain2 Hz-1 and 5 - 35 x 10-49 strain2Hz-1sr-1 for pointlike and extended sources, respectively. The latter result is the …

Thermal Correction To The Molar Polarizability Of A Boltzmann Gas, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Mariusz Puchalski, Peter J. Mohr
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Metrology in atomic physics has been crucial for a number of advanced determinations of fundamental constants. In addition to very precise frequency measurements, the molar polarizability of an atomic gas has recently also been measured very accurately. Part of the motivation for the measurements is due to ongoing efforts to redefine the International System of Units (SI), for which an accurate value of the Boltzmann constant is needed. Here we calculate the dominant shift of the molar polarizability in an atomic gas due to thermal effects. It is given by the relativistic correction to the dipole interaction, which emerges when …

Thermal history of the Universe between inflation and big-bang nucleosynthesis has not yet been revealed observationally. It will be probed by the detection of primordial gravitational waves generated during inflation, which contain information on the reheating temperature as well as the equation of state of the Universe after inflation. Based on the Fisher information formalism, we examine how accurately the tensor-to-scalar ratio and reheating temperature after inflation can be simultaneously determined with space-based gravitational wave detectors such as the DECI-hertz Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory and the Big-Bang Observer. We show that the reheating temperature is best determined if it is around …

Conveying gas containing sulfur through a sulfur tolerant planar solid oxide fuel cell (PSOFC) stack for sulfur scrubbing, followed by conveying the gas through a non-sulfur tolerant PSOFC stack. The sulfur tolerant PSOFC stack utilizes anode materials, such as LSV, that selectively convert H2S present in the fuel stream to other non-poisoning sulfur compounds. The remaining balance of gases remaining in the completely or near H2S-free exhaust fuel stream is then used as the fuel for the conventional PSOFC stack that is downstream of the sulfur-tolerant PSOFC. A broad range of fuels such as gasified coal, …

We investigated magnetic susceptibility (MS) variations in hydrocarbon contaminated sediments. Our objective was to determine if MS can be used as an intrinsic bioremediation indicator due to the activity of iron-reducing bacteria. A contaminated and an uncontaminated core were retrieved from a site contaminated with crude oil near Bemidji, Minnesota and subsampled for MS measurements. The contaminated core revealed enriched MS zones within the hydrocarbon smear zone, which is related to iron-reduction coupled to oxidation of hydrocarbon compounds and the vadose zone, which is coincident with a zone of methane depletion suggesting aerobic or anaerobic oxidation of methane is coupled …

Efforts toward improving the predictiveness in tier-based approaches to virtual screening (VS) have mainly focused on protein kinases. Despite their significance as drug targets, small molecule kinases have been rarely tested with these approaches. In this paper, we investigate the efficacy of a pharmacophore screening-combined structure-based docking approach on the human inducible 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase, an emerging target for cancer chemotherapy. Six out of a total 1364 compounds from NCI's Diversity Set II were selected as true actives via throughput screening. Using a database constructed from these compounds, five programs were tested for structure-based docking (SBD) performance, the MOE of which showed …

Current cell culture practices are dependent upon human operators and remain laborious and highly subjective, resulting in large variations and inconsistent outcomes, especially when using visual assessments of cell confluency to determine the appropriate time to subculture cells. Although efforts to automate cell culture with robotic systems are underway, the majority of such systems still require human intervention to determine when to subculture. Thus, it is necessary to accurately and objectively determine the appropriate time for cell passaging. Optimal stem cell culturing that maintains cell pluripotency while maximizing cell yields will be especially important for efficient, cost-effective stem cell-based therapies. …

Finite Element Based Generalized Impedance Boundary Condition For Complicated Em Calculation, Shiquan He, Zaiping Nie, Jun Zh Huang, Lijun Jiang, Weng Cho Chew
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, a finite element based generalized impedance boundary condition (FEM-GIBC) is proposed to solve complicated electromagnetic (EM) problems. Complex structures with arbitrary inhomogeneity and shapes are modeled with the finite element method, and their scattering contributions are transformed to generalized impedance conditions on their boundaries. For each sub-domain, a special GIBC can be established and it is only related to the structures in this domain. Hence, for finite periodic structures, a representative GIBC can be formulated at the boundary of a unit cell. After the GIBC at each boundary is established, the electromagnetic coupling between each impedance boundary …

This paper reports on improvement of the physical and mechanical properties of Y2O3-ZrO2 ceramics through compositional optimization, the use of nanograined powders and utilization of microwave sintering. ZrO2 with 2-5 mol% Y2O3, prepared from nanopowders, was sintered in both conventional and microwave furnaces under exactly the same heating schedule. It was found that microwave sintering improves physical and mechanical properties of Y2O3-ZrO2 ceramics compared with conventional sintering. Compositions containing 2 mol% Y2O3 exhibit the greatest improvement due to retention of tetragonal ZrO …

Electrically small structures embedded in a planarly layered medium are modeled by the augmented electric field integral equation (EFIE) method in this paper. By separating charge as extra unknown list, and enforcing the current continuity equation, an augmented EFIE (A-EFIE) can be setup. The matrix-friendly formulation of layered medium Green's function is applied and the frequency scaling of the impedance matrix in the moment method is analyzed when the frequency tends to zero. Rank deficiency and the charge neutrality enforcement is also discussed in detail. Numerical results show that the low frequency breakdown of electrically small structures embedded in a …

In this paper, we present a new method for the feed model for the method of moments (MoM). It is derived from a more accurate model with the realistic size of the excitation, in order to replace the commonly-used delta-gap excitation model. This new model is formulated around the electric field integration equations (EFIE) where the terms for magnetic current and magnetic field can be removed. Hence it is much simpler to implement and reduces the numerical complexity. In addition, a variational formulation is derived to provide second order accuracy of the input admittance calculation. Moreover, this new formulation can …

A New Closed-Form Evaluation Of Layered Medium Green's Function, Yongpin P. Chen, Weng Cho Chew, Lijun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A new closed-form evaluation of layered medium Green's function is proposed in this paper. The discrete complex image method (DCIM) is extended to sampling along the Sommerfeld branch cut, to capture the far field interaction. Contour deformation technique is applied to decompose the Green's function into radiation modes (branch cut integration) and guided modes (surface-wave poles). The matrix pencil method is implemented to get a closed-form solution, with the help of an alternative Sommerfeld identity. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of this method. © 2011 IEEE.

Low frequency full wave electromagnetic modeling is of great importance to a number of applications. But it is also a great challenge in the research of computational electromagnetics (CEM). To address this issue, in this paper, we will discuss incorporating the augmented electric field integral equation (A-EFIE) into the low frequency augmented equivalence principle algorithm (A-EPA) method. It effectively improves the low frequency simulation stability. But this method involves the calculation of the translation process which is exceptionally time-consuming and memory-consuming. In order to surmount this problem, we use the adaptive cross approximation (ACA) to accelerate the calculation of this …
