Answering The Call: Disrupting The Logics Of Capitalism Through Indigenous Economies, Madeline Jaye Bass May 2022

Answering The Call: Disrupting The Logics Of Capitalism Through Indigenous Economies, Madeline Jaye Bass

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

Capitalism, racialism, and indigenous exploitation are deeply entangled practices. In their implementation, they each rely on forms of extraction and subjugation with long-lasting impacts. Denise Ferreira da Silva uses a Black feminist practice of “reading” in order to explicate the ways lives are valued and lost within this pursuit of global capital. Despite overwhelming extraction, looking closely and reading into Indigenous lifeways and organizing practices encourages the pursuit of “otherwise worlds.” This essay uses a close reading of da Silva’s chapter on global capital, and the larger collection it comes from, as a way of exploring the economic practices of …

Contingent Conjunctures And Infrastructures Of Racial Capitalism: Activating And Confining Refugees After The 'Summer Of Migration', Mouna Maaroufi May 2022

Contingent Conjunctures And Infrastructures Of Racial Capitalism: Activating And Confining Refugees After The 'Summer Of Migration', Mouna Maaroufi

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

The article retraces the institutional, legal, and societal developments that have accompanied the increasing interlocking of asylum and workfare policies in Germany since the ‘summer of migration’ in 2015. By analyzing the infrastructures, narratives, but also conflicts and contingencies that underlie politics for labor market activation as they are experienced by refugees in Berlin and Brandenburg, ongoing social and institutional struggles around them are illustrated. The article argues that differential and contingent access to workfare measures corresponds to attempts to selectively and logistically activate potential workers for precarious segments and sectors. Infrastructures involved in such differential and confining activation are …

Expecting Blows: Sylvia Wynter, Sociogeny, And Exceeding Marxist Social Form, Sara-Maria Sorentino May 2022

Expecting Blows: Sylvia Wynter, Sociogeny, And Exceeding Marxist Social Form, Sara-Maria Sorentino

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

This article examines the relationship between Sylvia Wynter’s sociogenic principle and the question of “social form” in the critique of political economy. Despite their diverging emphases (the symbolic over the material, the slave over the laborer, sociogeny over social form), both Wynter and Marx pursue theoretical modes of inquiry that account for how empty reality principles reside over the reproduction of historical content and consciousness. In turning to the disavowed terms that heterodox Marxism, from value-form to world-systems theory, seeks to resuscitate, Wynter retains elements of Marxism’s interest in social forms reimagines the terms through which Marx’s critique can be …

White Dominion As Control: On Scientific Management And Racial Capitalism, Jonathan Masin-Peters May 2022

White Dominion As Control: On Scientific Management And Racial Capitalism, Jonathan Masin-Peters

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

This essay deepens the analysis of whiteness-as-dominion recently advanced by political theorist Ella Myers. Drawing on W.E.B. Du Bois, Myers focuses on the role that ideas of ownership and possession play in white racial identity. While I am persuaded that ownership and whiteness are cojoined, ownership does not necessarily imply control, although the former may be a prerequisite for the latter. I therefore argue that the idea of white dominion can be enhanced by paying greater attention to practices of racial control. More specifically, I focus on racialized modes of labor control via scientific management, or what recent scholars describe …

Electromechanical Fatigue Properties Of Dielectric Elastomer Stretch Sensors Under Orthopaedic Loading Conditions, Andrea Karen Persons May 2022

Electromechanical Fatigue Properties Of Dielectric Elastomer Stretch Sensors Under Orthopaedic Loading Conditions, Andrea Karen Persons

Theses and Dissertations

Fatigue testing of stretch sensors often focuses on high amplitude, low-cycle fatigue (LCF) behavior; however, when used for orthopaedic, athletic, or ergonomic assessments, stretch sensors are subjected to low amplitude, high-cycle fatigue (HCF) conditions. As an added layer of complexity, the fatigue testing of stretch sensors is not only focused on the life of the material comprising the sensor, but also on the reliability of the signal produced during the extension and relaxation of the sensor. Research into the development of a smart sock that can be used to measure the range of motion (ROM) of the ankle joint during …

Characterization Of Hydrogen Embrittlement Sensitivity In High Hardness Steels, David Ahlen Salley May 2022

Characterization Of Hydrogen Embrittlement Sensitivity In High Hardness Steels, David Ahlen Salley

Theses and Dissertations

High hardness steels can be affected by delayed brittle cracking often attributed to hydrogen embrittlement. Improved resistance to hydrogen embrittlement would be beneficial to many industries including military, automotive, and high-rise construction. While other prevention methods include coating, trapping, and barriers, design efforts in this study were focused on improving intrinsic properties to be more resistant to hydrogen embrittlement. Four alloys targeting 477 – 534 HB were designed and produced in-house and compared against a commercial grade 500 HB alloy. Charpy V-notch (CVN) impact toughness and tensile specimens were made according to ASTM E23 and ASTM E8 to characterize mechanical …

Computational Mechanics Implementation Of Performance Based Testing In Massive Concrete Structures, Gabriel Y. Riveros

ME 4233/6233 Fundamentals of FEA

Most of the nation’s critical water resource infrastructures are near or have exceeded their design lives. Consequently, there is a huge need for the development of assessment procedures that will change the way dams are maintained and operated with the intent of extending the service life. This is crucial for ensuring the safety and security of our nation’s public services. The combination of advanced computational mechanics and performance based testing (PBT) methods can be used to investigate the existing conditions of large concrete structures.

Performance based testing (PBT) is a new and innovative non-destructive testing technique that we are implementing …

Comparison Of Johnson-Cook And Linear Elastic-Perfectly Plastic Material Models For Ballistic Impact Case, Logan J. Callahan, Marella Failla, Harrison Williams

ME 4233/6233 Fundamentals of FEA

In an effort to characterize the linear elastic-perfect plastic (J2) and Johnson-Cook (JC) Strengthening and Damage material models for an Aluminum target material being struck by a steel penetrator, finite element analysis (FEA) will be used to simulate the residual velocities from ballistic impacts, using various velocities of the penetrator. The object is to define the point at which the J2 material model is no longer accurate and therefore requires the use of the JC material models.

Numerical Analysis Of Taylor Impact With Various Nose Shapes, Jean C. Santiago Padilla, Erik M. Chappell May 2022

Numerical Analysis Of Taylor Impact With Various Nose Shapes, Jean C. Santiago Padilla, Erik M. Chappell

ME 4233/6233 Fundamentals of FEA

The Taylor impact test is an experimental technique used to determine dynamic material response and to validate constitutive models used in numerical simulations. It generally consists of shooting a cylinder rod of a select material against a rigid target at different velocities. After impact, the plastic deformation of the cylinder is recorded and is directly compared to numerical predictions. Another application for Taylor impact was proposed by Li et al. (2021) where the nose shape of the cylinder is modified to create different loading environments that can test electronic equipment in penetration weapons. FEA models where designed in ABAQUS/Explicit to …

Development And Prototyping Of Motion Capture Hand Cluster Using 3d Printing, Griffin Adcock May 2022

Development And Prototyping Of Motion Capture Hand Cluster Using 3d Printing, Griffin Adcock

Honors Theses

Motion capture is being used to analyze the pitching motion of Mississippi State’s softball pitchers. The motion capture requires that the athletes be covered in clusters of reflective markers for the cameras to track their movement. The current cluster responsible for tracking the pitching hand of a softball player is continually being destroyed as the outer edge of the pitcher’s hand and the cluster contact her thigh. A new cluster was designed to only cover a small portion of the back of the hand, which eliminated the risk of breaking the cluster during pitching. The hand cluster was produced using …

Speech Therapy For Asd: Funding Curriculum, Potential For Success, Lillian Mcelreath May 2022

Speech Therapy For Asd: Funding Curriculum, Potential For Success, Lillian Mcelreath

Honors Theses

Speech Language Pathologists (SLP), in the past decade, have emerged as some of the most important advocates for autism services and research (Prizant, 2017). The SLP’s unique role in language therapy, combined with their background in neurodevelopmental communication and child development, has made them an important part of autism services and research. Hence, states have allocated funding to service and research advancement for this specific population. However, different states provide different levels of supports to individuals with autism. States lacking specific mandates that provide therapy and support to this population could be hindering the success of a growing population. In …

Investigating Differing Covid-19 Vaccine Attitudes Within Families, Sarah Dulaney

Honors Theses

The dynamic between the young adult and their immediate parent(s) is unique as it is in limbo between childhood and the young adult starting their own family. Although young adults can legally make their own vaccine decisions, parental influence can be a major factor in their decision making (Patel, Zochowski, Peterman et al., 2012). The aim of this study is to investigate the sociological phenomena behind the differing attitudes between family members on the topic of COVID-19 vaccination. As COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc on the health and stability of society, understanding the factors that influence vaccine attitudes can inform …

The Price On Our Tap: A Policy And Quantitative Analysis Of County-Level Water Affordability In Alabama, Mayukh Datta

Honors Theses

This thesis examines disparities in water affordability in Alabama by exploring the relationship between water expenditure and other variables based on a quantitative analysis of a four-year water provider-level, panel data set. I utilize ordinary least squares to answer the following research question: "After controlling for income, what variables affect water expenditure in Alabama, and particularly, what impact does race have on water affordability and expenditure in Alabama?" This analysis is motivated by the on-going water and sewer affordability crisis that currently affects nonwhite households in the broader United States. Given that there are very few policies addressing water affordability, …

Prediction Of Residual Stresses In L-Pbf Ti-6al-4v Fatigue Specimens Using A Thermo-Mechanical Finite Element Model, Haley Petersen, Brad J. Sampson Apr 2022

Prediction Of Residual Stresses In L-Pbf Ti-6al-4v Fatigue Specimens Using A Thermo-Mechanical Finite Element Model, Haley Petersen, Brad J. Sampson

ME 4233/6233 Fundamentals of FEA

Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) is an additive manufacturing process that is becoming widely adopted in the automotive, aerospace, and biomedical industries. It uses a laser to melt metal in the form of powder to build parts in a layer-by-layer fashion based on an imported CAD geometry. The constant remelting of previous layers can produce unwanted thermally induced residual stresses in the part due to large thermal gradients, which can drastically reduce the fatigue life of the material. Predicting these residual stresses within the as-built part would be advantageous because one could better understand how the part will perform in …

A Computational Approach For The Estimation Of Elastic Behavior Of Metal Matrix Composites, Emmanuel Michalakis Apr 2022

A Computational Approach For The Estimation Of Elastic Behavior Of Metal Matrix Composites, Emmanuel Michalakis

ME 4233/6233 Fundamentals of FEA

Composite materials are being widely used in many industries for their properties and efficiency. The current work presents a computational approach that can estimate the elastic behavior of metal composites and porous materials using finite element models of representative volume elements (RVEs) which have been used to test and design particulate composite materials. The required size of the RVE for the determination of elastic properties, the effects of the elastic modulus fraction Einc/Emat on the homogenized elasticity and the convergence of the homogenized properties E11, E22 and E33 with the size of the RVE is explored.
