Design, Construction, And Characterization Of A Test Stand Used To Test Filter Media, Adam W. Parsons
Design, Construction, And Characterization Of A Test Stand Used To Test Filter Media, Adam W. Parsons
Theses and Dissertations
Air filters are routinely used to remove various aerosols ranging from radioactive particles to airborne viruses. The overall performance of a filter may be simplified to consider only two main performance characteristics: 1) the efficiency at which particles are removed by the filter, and 2) the filter’s resistance to air flow. Per the DOE Nuclear Air Cleaning Handbook, HEPA filters require a minimum filter efficiency of 99.97% for particles 0.3 micrometers in diameter. Understanding how filters will perform with respect to time and mass loading is essential towards building more robust filters that operate more efficiently and safely. Analyzing the …
Climate Sensitive Diameter Growth Models For Major Tree Species In Mississippi, Sujan Subedi
Climate Sensitive Diameter Growth Models For Major Tree Species In Mississippi, Sujan Subedi
Theses and Dissertations
Anticipated climate change and increasing wood demand require dependable diameter growth models for adaptive forest management. We used a mixed-effects modeling approach with Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data to fit diameter growth models for loblolly pine, other softwood species (slash pine, shortleaf pine, and longleaf pine), sweetgum, and other hardwood (southern red oak, red maple, and water oak) species. Climatic variables coupled with individual tree attributes and competition factors improved climate insensitive models. Growth of loblolly pine and sweetgum was positively correlated with mean temperature of the coldest month. Mean temperature of the warmest month negatively influenced diameter growth …
Novel Strategies In Near Infrared Spectroscopy (Nirs) And Multivariate Analysis (Mva) For Detecting And Profiling Pathogens And Diseases Of Agricultural Importance., Johjan Mariana Santos Rivera
Novel Strategies In Near Infrared Spectroscopy (Nirs) And Multivariate Analysis (Mva) For Detecting And Profiling Pathogens And Diseases Of Agricultural Importance., Johjan Mariana Santos Rivera
Theses and Dissertations
The time required for the identification of pathogens is an important determinant of infection-related mortality rates and disease spread for species of relevance in agriculture. Conventional identification methods require a processing time of at least one to twenty days. Therefore, inaccurate empirical treatments are often provided while awaiting further identification, such that most cases progress with further aggravation of symptoms, contamination of other animals or plants, generating economic loss from decreased yield, and increased mitigation costs. Thus, there is a need for innovative, non-destructive, and rapid analytical techniques that provide reagent-free, portable, reliable, and holistic approaches to detect diseases in …
A Comparative Study On The Functionality Of Porcine Dura As A Tissue-Engineered Dura Mater Graft For Clinical Applications, Ashma Sharma
A Comparative Study On The Functionality Of Porcine Dura As A Tissue-Engineered Dura Mater Graft For Clinical Applications, Ashma Sharma
Theses and Dissertations
Damage to dura mater may occur during intracranial or spinal surgeries, which can result in cerebrospinal fluid leakage as well as other potentially fatal physiological changes. As a result, biological scaffolds derived from xenogeneic materials are typically used to repair and regenerate dura mater post intracranial or spinal surgeries. In this study we explore the mechanics, structure, and immunological capacity of xenogeneic dura mater to be considered as a replacement for human dura. A comparative analysis is done between native porcine dura and a commercially available bovine collagen-based dura graft. Native porcine dura mater was decellularized and subjected to mechanical …
The Invasion Of Bigheaded Carps In The Tennessee River And Tennessee – Tombigbee Waterway, Spencer N. Vanderbloemen
The Invasion Of Bigheaded Carps In The Tennessee River And Tennessee – Tombigbee Waterway, Spencer N. Vanderbloemen
Theses and Dissertations
The Ohio River Basin, including the Ohio, Cumberland, and Tennessee rivers, and the contiguous Tennessee - Tombigbee Waterway are under threat due to the ongoing invasion of bigheaded carps. In the Tennessee River, bigheaded carps were first documented in Kentucky Lake in 2004. I tested whether there were differences in abundance of Gizzard Shad, a competitor, before and after the bigheaded carps invasion, but no effects were detected. I also surveyed bigheaded carps colonization of Bay Springs Lake in the Tennessee - Tombigbee Waterway. Catch rates with gillnets were low and conformed with those documented elsewhere in the Ohio Basin …
Characterization Of Corynespora Cassiicola Resistance To The Quinone Outside Inhibitor Fungicides, Elucidation Of Fitness Parameters, And Defining Alternative Fungicide Product Strategies In Mississippi Soybean, Xiaopeng Wang
Theses and Dissertations
Target spot, caused by Corynespora cassiicola, is a common lower canopy disease of soybean in the southern United States. Given the recent resurgence of target spot and increasing reports of resistance to the quinone outside inhibitor (QoI) fungicide class within C. cassiicola, a survey of C. cassiicola from the Mississippi soybean production system was initiated in 2019 to determine the nature of its resistance mechanisms. A total of 819 monoconidial isolates were collected from 228 geographic field locations in 75 Mississippi counties. The molecular mechanism of resistance was determined using a PCR-RFLP analysis by comparing nucleotide sequences in …
Perfectionism, Alcohol Intoxication, And Deliberate Self-Harm In Men And Women, Lissa N. Mandell
Perfectionism, Alcohol Intoxication, And Deliberate Self-Harm In Men And Women, Lissa N. Mandell
Theses and Dissertations
Previous research has demonstrated associations between deliberate self-harm (DSH) and perfectionism, although most of that research used retrospective self-report measures of DSH, which are prone to various cognitive biases. Although perfectionism has been associated with alcohol abuse, no research has examined how alcohol intoxication may moderate the relation between perfectionism and DSH. The aims of this experimental study were to determine if perfectionism is associated with a laboratory analogue of DSH (the Self-Aggression Paradigm) and examine the role of alcohol intoxication as a potential moderator. Using archival data, blood alcohol content (BAC) was manipulated by randomly assigning participants to reach …
Synoptic-Scale Identification And Classification Of Lake-Effect Snowstorms Off The North American Great Lakes, Jacob Wiley
Synoptic-Scale Identification And Classification Of Lake-Effect Snowstorms Off The North American Great Lakes, Jacob Wiley
Theses and Dissertations
The lee shores of the North American Great Lakes are subject to hazardous amounts of snowfall each winter as continental polar air masses are destabilized by the relatively warmer lakes which manifests as pronounced heat and moisture fluxes and subsequent convection and snow generation. This phenomenon, known as lake-effect snow (LES), has been studied by the atmospheric scientific community extensively as the local and mesoscale processes are becoming better understood through the implementation of in situ research projects and high-resolution numerical weather prediction models. However, considerably less research effort has inquired on what large-scale conditions are linked with lake-effect snow. …
Data-Driven Sparse Computational Imaging With Deep Learning, Robiulhossain Mdrafi
Data-Driven Sparse Computational Imaging With Deep Learning, Robiulhossain Mdrafi
Theses and Dissertations
Typically, inverse imaging problems deal with the reconstruction of images from the sensor measurements where sensors can take form of any imaging modality like camera, radar, hyperspectral or medical imaging systems. In an ideal scenario, we can reconstruct the images via applying an inversion procedure from these sensors’ measurements, but practical applications have several challenges: the measurement acquisition process is heavily corrupted by the noise, the forward model is not exactly known, and non-linearities or unknown physics of the data acquisition play roles. Hence, perfect inverse function is not exactly known for immaculate image reconstruction. To this end, in this …
Cross-Laminated Timber (Clt) Mechanical Properties Evaluation., Laurice Mara Spinelli Correa
Cross-Laminated Timber (Clt) Mechanical Properties Evaluation., Laurice Mara Spinelli Correa
Theses and Dissertations
As the use of engineered wood products as such as cross-laminated timber (CLT) evolves in United States, it’s imperative to understand its behavior under different circumstances as well as to explore new possible streams for product’s application. In that matter, it was proposed that a research study would be developed to evaluate the performance of CLT panels focusing on strength and stiffness properties. To accomplish this goal, three main objectives were traced: 1) To complete preliminary test on traditional lumber in order to observe notched wood failure behavior focusing on strength, ductility, and failure mode; 2) To perform mechanical testing …
Spatial-Spectral Analysis In Dimensionality Reduction For Hyperspectral Image Classification, Chiranjibi Shah
Spatial-Spectral Analysis In Dimensionality Reduction For Hyperspectral Image Classification, Chiranjibi Shah
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation develops new algorithms with different techniques in utilizing spatial and spectral information for hyperspectral image classification. It is necessary to perform spatial and spectral analysis and conduct dimensionality reduction (DR) for effective feature extraction, because hyperspectral imagery consists of a large number of spatial pixels along with hundreds of spectral dimensions.
In the first proposed method, it employs spatial-aware collaboration-competition preserving graph embedding by imposing a spatial regularization term along with Tikhonov regularization in the objective function for DR of hyperspectral imagery. Moreover, Collaboration representation (CR) is an efficient classifier but without using spatial information. Thus, structure-aware collaborative …
Identification Of Pneumococcal Membrane Proteins Involved In Colonization/Biofilm Formation And Cognate Host Cellular Receptors, Yoonsung Hu
Theses and Dissertations
Colonization is prerequisite for infection and transmission of Streptococcus pneumoniae, or pneumococcus. Currently available pneumococcal conjugate and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccines can provide protection against a limited number of capsular serotypes. Implementation of vaccines has decreased the frequency of invasive pneumococcal disease and their colonization rates, but only in a serotype-dependent manner. This has led to serotype replacement in pneumococcal ecology and increased invasive disease caused by non-vaccine serotypes. Development of conserved protein-based vaccine that can provide protection against all pneumococcal serotypes is needed. Numerous surface proteins are conserved in all serotypes, and some are known to be involved in …
Is Agriculture Being Implemented In Private School Classrooms? The Impact Of Teacher Willingness And Availability Of Resources., Casey Moss
Theses and Dissertations
Agricultural literacy has been a topic of concern as most of the population have little to no understanding of agriculture, and the impact it has on society. Agricultural literacy can be defined as “having knowledge and understanding of agriculturally related scientific and technologically based concepts and processes required for personal decision making” (Meischen & Trexler, 2003, p.44). Numerous studies have been conducted to determine the significance of agricultural literacy beginning with elementary aged children and continuing through high school. The majority of studies conducted focus on public school students and teachers. This has led to a gap in the knowledge …
Plugging Into A New Age: The Impact Of Social Media Use On Undergraduate Students’ Perceptions Of Production Agriculture And Consumer Decisions, Shannon K. Allen
Plugging Into A New Age: The Impact Of Social Media Use On Undergraduate Students’ Perceptions Of Production Agriculture And Consumer Decisions, Shannon K. Allen
Theses and Dissertations
Today, 84% of young adults between the ages of 18-29 use at least one social media site (Pew Research Center, 2020) and are in the stages of emerging adulthood where they are making independent decisions for the first time (Arnett, 2000). As society becomes more technologically advanced, we become further removed from agriculture (Powell & Agnew, 2011; Dale et al., 2017). Thus, resulting in a separation between consumer and producer (Wilson & Lusk, 2020; Holt & Cartmell, 2013). This leaves the opportunity for society to turn to social media for agriculture information leading to negative perceptions of agriculture (Eyck, 2000; …
Developing A Model Of Driver Performance, Situation Awareness, And Cognitive Load Considering Different Levels Of Partial Vehicle Autonomy, Jessie E. Cossitt
Developing A Model Of Driver Performance, Situation Awareness, And Cognitive Load Considering Different Levels Of Partial Vehicle Autonomy, Jessie E. Cossitt
Theses and Dissertations
To fully utilize the abilities of current autonomous vehicles, it is necessary to understand the interactions between vehicles and their operators. Since the current state of the art of autonomous vehicles is partial autonomy that requires operators to perform parts of the driving task and be alert and ready to take over full control of the vehicle, it is necessary to know how operators' abilities are impacted by the amount of autonomy present in the system. Autonomous systems have known effects on performance, cognitive load, and situation awareness, but little is known about how these effects change in relation to …
Structural And Biological Analysis Of Faults In Basalts In Sheepshead Mountains, Oregon As An Earth Analogue To Mars, Allison Bohanon
Structural And Biological Analysis Of Faults In Basalts In Sheepshead Mountains, Oregon As An Earth Analogue To Mars, Allison Bohanon
Theses and Dissertations
Microbial life on Mars is not visible from orbit or by rover cameras, but the fracture networks and scarp morphologies associated with fractures they could live in are measurable. We conducted a field analogue study of 92 normal fault scarps in the Sheepshead Mountains, Oregon to examine the correlation between scarp morphology and vegetation growth in the Steens Basalt. While vegetation is not expected on Mars, the fracture networks that sustain vegetation offer the same micro-environment that would support and protect endoliths. Structural variables were measured in the field and infrared spectra of fault scarps were measured using a handheld …

Analysis Of Comet Rotation Through Modeling Of Features In The Coma, Ien Harris
Theses and Dissertations
An integral field unit fiber array spectrograph was used to observe the emission spectra of radical species (C2, C3, CH, CN, and NH2) in multiple comets. The resultant azimuthal and radial division maps produced from the reduced data provide a unique method of analyzing features with these radicals in the comae, as well as how they behave over time. A Monte Carlo model was developed in order to simulate the behavior of particles from the outer nucleus and coma of each comet depending on various parameters including rotational period, outflow velocity, and active area location. The results from the model …

Comparison Of Abdominal Computed Tomography To Ultrasound In The Diagnosis Of Canine Biliary Disease Manifesting As Acute Abdominal Signs, Shanna Christine Marroquin
Theses and Dissertations
Biliary diseases are uncommon, potentially fatal causes of acute abdomen in dogs. Little information is present comparing the performance of computed tomography (CT) to ultrasound in identifying canine biliary pathology. Thirty-five client-owned dogs presenting for acute abdomen signs received an abdominal ultrasound and contrast-enhanced abdominal CT. Two authors reviewed the randomized, anonymized CT and ultrasound studies. Twenty-eight dogs had biliary pathology and seven dogs serving as controls had no evidence of biliary disease. The final diagnoses of patients with biliary pathology included cholelithiasis, gallbladder mucoceles, cholangiohepatitis/cholangitis, extrahepatic biliary obstruction, gallbladder wall edema, gallbladder wall mass, and cystic mucosal hyperplasia. Computed …
Determining Residual Control And Systemic Activity Of Commonly Used Insecticides In Soybean And Cotton, Jacob H. Smith
Determining Residual Control And Systemic Activity Of Commonly Used Insecticides In Soybean And Cotton, Jacob H. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Chemical control is a critical component of integrated pest management in cotton and soybean production. Residual efficacy of foliar insecticides can be highly variable and difficult to quantify due to several factors. The purpose of this research was to determine residual control and concentrations in flowering structures of commonly used insecticides. This research focused on the concentrations of active ingredient within the plant as well as efficacy over time. Previous research suggested chlorantraniliprole had a long residual and was highly lethal on corn earworm up to 28 days after treatment (DAT) in soybean; however, the results found in cotton were …
A Novel Chebyshev Wavelet Method For Solving Fractional-Order Optimal Control Problems, Ghodsieh Ghanbari
A Novel Chebyshev Wavelet Method For Solving Fractional-Order Optimal Control Problems, Ghodsieh Ghanbari
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents a numerical approach based on generalized fractional-order Chebyshev wavelets for solving fractional-order optimal control problems. The exact value of the Riemann– Liouville fractional integral operator of the generalized fractional-order Chebyshev wavelets is computed by applying the regularized beta function. We apply the given wavelets, the exact formula, and the collocation method to transform the studied problem into a new optimization problem. The convergence analysis of the proposed method is provided. The present method is extended for solving fractional-order, distributed-order, and variable-order optimal control problems. Illustrative examples are considered to show the advantage of this method in comparison …

Raw milk sales are legal in 30 states, including Mississippi, where regulations are largely management-based and not food-safety related. The research objectives were to analyze the microbial profile of raw goat milk from Mississippi farms and assess food safety practices and perceptions of dairy goat farmers. Deficiencies and opportunities for improvement in raw goat milk safety were identified. Staphylococcus spp. was present in most (70%) milk samples but aligned with drying-off. E. coli, Enterobacteriaceae, and coliforms were observed in 4, 10, and 12 samples, respectively; no Salmonella spp. or Listeria monocytogenes were detected. The survey highlighted farmers' need for …
Evaluating The Role Of Area, Isolation, And Human Behavior On Meso-Mammals In A Small Statistical Demographic Area, Brittney Palode
Evaluating The Role Of Area, Isolation, And Human Behavior On Meso-Mammals In A Small Statistical Demographic Area, Brittney Palode
Theses and Dissertations
Urbanization offers unique challenges for wildlife. The urban landscape is fragmented and changes available resources for wildlife. Human-dominated landscapes can provide food, shelter, or cover through human-subsidized resources. However, to thrive in human-dominated landscapes, wildlife must adapt or disperse, otherwise they will die. In this study, I investigated how the urban landscape and human behavior influence urban wildlife occurrence. I established 35 camera sites during April 2020. I surveyed residential property dwellers around each camera site to determine what behavior they performed that could increase species occurrence. Gray fox and coyote site use decreased with increased isolation while no species …
A Novel Method For Sensitivity Analysis Of Time-Averaged Chaotic System Solutions, Christian A. Spencer-Coker
A Novel Method For Sensitivity Analysis Of Time-Averaged Chaotic System Solutions, Christian A. Spencer-Coker
Theses and Dissertations
The direct and adjoint methods are to linearize the time-averaged solution of bounded dynamical systems about one or more design parameters. Hence, such methods are one way to obtain the gradient necessary in locally optimizing a dynamical system’s time-averaged behavior over those design parameters. However, when analyzing nonlinear systems whose solutions exhibit chaos, standard direct and adjoint sensitivity methods yield meaningless results due to time-local instability of the system. The present work proposes a new method of solving the direct and adjoint linear systems in time, then tests that method’s ability to solve instances of the Lorenz system that exhibit …

A Modular Synthesis Of Processable And Thermally Stable Semi-Fluorinated Aryl Ether Polymers Via Step-Growth Polymerization Of Fluoroalkenes, Ketki Eknath Shelar
Theses and Dissertations
Tailored fluoropolymers remain the leading choice for a wide variety of advanced high-performance applications, including electronic/optical and energy conversion, owing to their unique blend of complementary high-performance properties. Amorphous semi-fluorinated polymers exhibit improved solubility and melt processability when compared to traditional perfluoropolymers. A leading class of semi-fluorinated aryl ether polymers includes perfluorocyclobutyl (PFCB), perfluorocycloalkenyl (PFCA), and fluoroarylene vinylene ether (FAVE) polymers. Monomers containing aromatic trifluorovinyl ethers (TFVE) are used to synthesize PFCB polymers via radical-mediated [2+2] cyclodimerization. On the other hand, FAVE and PFCA polymers are polymerized via base-mediated nucleophilic addition/elimination of bisphenols with TFVE monomers and decafluorocyclohexene respectively. The …

Characterization Of Quaternary Stratigraphy In The Mississippi Sound To Evaluate The Influence Of Geologic Heterogeneity On Submarine Groundwater Transport And Discharge, Zachary Peoples
Theses and Dissertations
Submarine Groundwater Discharge (SGD) through seafloor sediments is gaining recognition as an important component of coastal water quality. Stratigraphic features creating geologic heterogeneity, such as incised paleochannels, may influence preferential pathways for SGD. The central Mississippi Sound is underlain by paleochannels that were incised into Pleistocene sediments while the area was subaerially exposed during the last glacial maximum and are now buried by transgressive Holocene deposits. In this thesis, newly collected chirp, previously published seismic reflection, and sediment core data are used to characterize the three-dimensional structure of the Holocene-Pleistocene contact. Results indicate that Pleistocene paleochannels cross-cut the study area, …
The Effect Of Sprinkler Cooling On Water Conservation, House Environment, And Broiler Performance, Jonathan W. Moon
The Effect Of Sprinkler Cooling On Water Conservation, House Environment, And Broiler Performance, Jonathan W. Moon
Theses and Dissertations
Maintaining performance and mitigating heat stress of the modern broiler is a challenging task during hot weather conditions. Increased demand of high quality reasonably priced animal protein and predictions of future limited water availability make sustainability and water conservation a worthwhile goal for the poultry industry. The most used form for cooling broilers after wind speed is evaporative cool cell (CC) systems. Though highly effective at cooling the incoming air, they substantially increase the relative humidity inside the house, which hinders the bird’s ability to cool itself through evaporative respiration. Cool cells also utilize mass amounts of water. The objective …
