Supply Chains And Organizing Against Precarity, Benjamin Mckean
Supply Chains And Organizing Against Precarity, Benjamin Mckean
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
As the hegemonic form of international trade, transnational supply chains are potent symbols of global interdependence that can appear as both a cause of precarity, when oriented to them as a worker subjected to capital mobility and corporate domination, and as a welcome cushion to precarity, when oriented to them as a consumer seeking low prices and convenience. In this paper, I explore both how the pandemic-induced failings of transnational supply chains illuminate these contradictions of work and consumption and how we might reorient ourselves to these circumstances so that a broad coalition can more readily identify shared interests in …

Scrutinizing Precarity: In Search Of Emancipatory Potential, Jaime Aznar Erasun
Scrutinizing Precarity: In Search Of Emancipatory Potential, Jaime Aznar Erasun
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
This paper provides a review and discussion on the emancipatory potential of the notion of ‘precarity’. Since the 1980s, the notion of ‘precarity’ has been used increasingly by scholars and activists to account for variegated grievances. Specifically, it has been used to address issues related to the transformations of labour in the XXIst century: neoliberal reorganization of labour markets, increasing unavailability of stable jobs, increased personal debts, debilitating labour unions or the lack of accessible housing among other issues. However, beyond structural grievances voiced by everyday workers, precarity can also serve as an analytical tool to pin down socially induced …
The Social Murder Of Victoria Salazar: Neoliberal Capitalism And Working Class Precariousness In El Salvador, Steven Osuna
The Social Murder Of Victoria Salazar: Neoliberal Capitalism And Working Class Precariousness In El Salvador, Steven Osuna
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
On March 27, 2021, a Salvadoran refugee named Victoria Salazar was brutally killed by police in the Mexican resort town of Tulum, Quintana Roo. In this article, I introduce a “proletarian feminist analysis” to the study of Central American displacement and forced migration to argue that Victoria Salazar’s death is a “social murder.” Although Mexican police murdered Victoria Salazar, I contend that the social degradation and working-class precariousness in El Salvador and Mexico, all shaped by neoliberal capitalist relations of exploitation and afflicting cisgender and trans women in distinctive ways, set the conditions for Ms Salazar’s social murder.

Six Ways To Misunderstand Precarity: Reflections On Social Angst And Its Political Offspring, Albena Azmanova
Six Ways To Misunderstand Precarity: Reflections On Social Angst And Its Political Offspring, Albena Azmanova
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
These reflections develop a comprehensive conceptualization of precarity as a condition of politically and systemically generated economic and social vulnerability caused by insecurity of livelihoods – a form of disempowerment, experienced as incapacity to cope, itself rooted in a misalignment between responsibility and power. Precarity, thus understood, is a transversal social injustice cutting across differences in social class, education, employment, and income. It harms people’s material and psychological welfare and hampers society’s capacity to manage adversity and govern itself.
The article elaborates on the above conceptualization by addressing six fallacies in debates on precarity:
1: “There is nothing particularly new …
Introduction: On The Timeliness Of Precarity-Critique Today, Paul Apostolidis
Introduction: On The Timeliness Of Precarity-Critique Today, Paul Apostolidis
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
Now is a propitious time to re-examine the present forms and political implications of precarity. As my colleagues and I write the essays for this special issue of Emancipations, questions abound regarding the manifestations of precarity that have appeared since popular movements in France first adopted the slogan of ‘the precariat’ in the early 2000s. Then, ‘precarity’ fit as an intuitive name for people’s negatively altered living and working conditions as national governments, corporations and supra-national institutions consolidated neoliberal transformations as, indisputably, the new norm. Two decades hence, should this situation simply be reaffirmed as the not-so new normal?
Does Anxiety Sensitivity Mediate Age-Related Differences In Anxiety In Middle-Aged And Older Adults?, Katherine F. Peterson
Does Anxiety Sensitivity Mediate Age-Related Differences In Anxiety In Middle-Aged And Older Adults?, Katherine F. Peterson
Theses and Dissertations
Anxiety is a mental illness that can have significant deleterious impacts on an individual’s functioning. Although anxiety has been studied in older adults, there is conflicting evidence on differences in anxiety as a function of age. Anxiety sensitivity is a construct that is positively related to anxiety but has limited research in older adults. Extant literature suggests that older adults experience less anxiety sensitivity than do younger adults. According to Socioemotional Selectivity Theory, this may be due to older adults letting go of the things that make them anxious. The current study proposed that age impacts self-rated anxiety such that …
Natural Capital Value Of Fisheries Under Environmental Stressor: A Case Of Blue Crab Under Hypoxia In The Gulf Of Mexico, Shelby Leigh Brewer
Natural Capital Value Of Fisheries Under Environmental Stressor: A Case Of Blue Crab Under Hypoxia In The Gulf Of Mexico, Shelby Leigh Brewer
Theses and Dissertations
Environmental threats to fisheries are a rising concern for fishery managers. Gulf of Mexico hypoxia is particularly concerning. In order to properly manage Gulf fisheries, the sustainability of species stock and its natural capital values should be analyzed. As an empirical effort, I use blue crab in Louisiana waters as a case study to build a bioeconomic model of blue crab under hypoxia. I apply the natural capital valuation approach to estimate the blue crab value function under hypoxia in order to assess blue crab sustainability. I find that blue crab management in Louisiana under hypoxia is not sustainable, being …
Flow And Thermal Transport In Additively Manufactured Metal Lattices Based On Novel Unit-Cell Topologies, Inderjot Kaur
Flow And Thermal Transport In Additively Manufactured Metal Lattices Based On Novel Unit-Cell Topologies, Inderjot Kaur
Theses and Dissertations
The emergence of metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) over the last two decades has opened venues to mitigate the challenges associated with stochastic open-cell metal foams manufactured through the traditional foaming process. Regular lattices with user-defined unit cell topologies have been reported to exhibit better mechanical properties in comparison to metal foams which extend their applicability to multifunctional heat exchangers subjected to both thermal and mechanical loads. The current study aims at investigating the thermal-hydraulic characteristics of promising novel unit cell topologies realizable through AM technologies. Experimental investigation was conducted on four different topologies, viz (a) Octet, (b) Face-diagonal (FD) cube, …
The Level Of Burnout And Job Satisfaction Among Mississippi Agriculture Educators And The Potential Level Of Impact From The Covid-19 Pandemic, Anna Hollis
Theses and Dissertations
Many states across the country have felt the impact of a nationwide teacher shortage. Specifically, the state of Mississippi has experienced a shortage of certified agricultural education teachers. Unfortunately, during a time, a novel virus (Coronavirus or COVID-19) swept the entire world and shook the academic world to its core. Like the majority, educators were encouraged to adopt a variety of approaches to better flow with the changes in their “normal” routines. Many researchers have suggested that teachers are leaving education due to little resources, recognition, and high job demands, which correlates to poor job satisfaction and symptoms of burnout. …
Effects Of Anthropogenic Global Change On A Grassland Prairie Community, Carter Wolff
Effects Of Anthropogenic Global Change On A Grassland Prairie Community, Carter Wolff
Theses and Dissertations
Anthropogenic global change is altering food web dynamics. Global change comprises factors, like temperature, sound, light and more. In this dissertation, I evaluate how two factors, sound and temperature, alter prairie communities. In Chapter 1, I test if sound influences grasshopper respiration rate, thereby altering diet. Some sound frequencies increased grasshopper respiration rate while others decreased respiration rate. Frequencies that elevated respiration rate led to grasshoppers consuming more carbohydrate-rich foods compared to protein-rich foods. This diet change stems from a carbon deficit due to increased respiration rate and could act as a mechanism by which sound pollution indirectly alters plant …
Bayesian Network Development For Depots Location Selection With Biomass Supply System Excellence, Alaa Ashraf Abulhamail
Bayesian Network Development For Depots Location Selection With Biomass Supply System Excellence, Alaa Ashraf Abulhamail
Theses and Dissertations
The renewable energy of the wood pellet market has taken great attention over the last few periods. However, the returns from the pellet business depend largely on how well the quality of biomass. The objective is to economically harvest pellets matching pellet standards set forward by the U.S. markets. The single-mindedness of this study is to develop a Bayesian network model to ensure a high-quality flow through the supply chain of the pallet industry in the top ten counties in Mississippi state. Multiple critical decisions (harvesting, storage, transportation, and quality control) of a biomass-to-pellet supply system could potentially affect the …
A Mechanical And Finite Element Analysis Of Bone Screw Thread Design, Timothy H. Cook
A Mechanical And Finite Element Analysis Of Bone Screw Thread Design, Timothy H. Cook
Theses and Dissertations
This paper will seek to evaluate results obtained from mechanical testing and computational analysis to determine the efficacy of new thread designs for bone screws in their various applications and uses in surgical treatments. These new thread designs will be tested against the market standard buttress thread and any resulting trends will be analyzed.
Four different thread designs were tested in 90 degree cyclic loading and then subsequently an axial pullout test. The parameters of interest from these tests such as peak to peak displacement over cycle and axial load versus axial displacement were recorded. These four designs were the …
Effects Of Cyclic Intercritical Annealing On Strength-Ductility Combinations In Medium Manganese Steels, Dawn Van Iderstine
Effects Of Cyclic Intercritical Annealing On Strength-Ductility Combinations In Medium Manganese Steels, Dawn Van Iderstine
Theses and Dissertations
Intercritically annealed medium manganese steels are a promising third-generation advanced high-strength steel candidate, relying on large fractions of Mn-enriched retained austenite for excellent strength-ductility combinations. The present study proposes a novel cyclic intercritical annealing to promote nucleation and efficient stabilization of austenite in a medium Mn microstructure. Design of the heat treatment is driven by the hypothesis that the distribution of ductile austenite is key in mitigating the strain incompatibility that accelerates failure in these steels. Development and preliminary testing of the heat treatment are first detailed and compared with literature results for equivalent isothermal annealing. The effects of cyclic …

Evaluating Functional Zoning Based On Site Index To Achieve Competing Objectives Held By Family Forest Owners On Southern U.S. Pine Forest Tracts, Bradley S. Resch
Evaluating Functional Zoning Based On Site Index To Achieve Competing Objectives Held By Family Forest Owners On Southern U.S. Pine Forest Tracts, Bradley S. Resch
Theses and Dissertations
Family forests comprise a significant portion of total forest lands in the southern United States and their owners frequently have multiple, competing objectives. This research evaluated the effectiveness of functional zoning based on site index on forest sizes relevant to family forest owners. A total of fifty family forests were randomly selected from counties in the East Texas Pineywoods region. Timber production and quail habitat were used as proxies for competing objectives. It was found that 80% of family forest parcels had sufficient site index heterogeneity to benefit from functional zoning. For forest parcels that could benefit from functional zoning, …
Understanding The Consideration Set Of Potential Successors During The Ground-Rules Phase Of The Family-Firm Succession Process: A Family Social Capital And Goal Systems Theory Approach, Sara E. Davis
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation seeks to further the current understanding of the development of a consideration set of potential successors in the ground-rules phase of family-firm succession. To do so, this dissertation uses goal systems theory and family social capital to consider goal prioritization as a mechanism through which the family influences the identification of potential successors. Goal system theory emphasizes the prioritization of multiple goals and the corresponding means-ends relationships. Family social capital provides a more nuanced understanding of the influence of the family on the strategic prioritization of goals in the family firm. This dissertation explores the influence of family …
Consumption Of Fruits And Vegetables In The Mississippi Delta And The Role Of The Food Environment, Shannon Giscombe
Consumption Of Fruits And Vegetables In The Mississippi Delta And The Role Of The Food Environment, Shannon Giscombe
Theses and Dissertations
Differences in the prevalence of obesity are generally associated with disparities in the food environment which partially determine diet quality. In this research, I examine the relationship between the local food environment and the consumption of fruit and vegetables among individuals living in the Mississippi Delta region using survey and store availability data for individuals living in seven counties with the highest obesity rates in the state. An ordered probit model with an endogenous covariate is used to assess the marginal effect of food environment variables on the frequency of fruit or vegetable consumption. I find that longer distance traveled …
Identifying Pneumococcal Proteins That Elicit An Iga Response, Amber Travis
Identifying Pneumococcal Proteins That Elicit An Iga Response, Amber Travis
Theses and Dissertations
Streptococcus pneumoniae is an asymptomatic colonizer of the upper respiratory tract as well as an opportunistic pathogen. Colonization is prerequisite to causing disease in a host, and it often involves formation of biofilms. There are currently two vaccines available against pneumococcus, both of which focus on preventing invasive disease by targeting the polysaccharide capsule of the most invasive serotypes. We hypothesized that by using membrane proteins expressed during the biofilm state, we can formulate an effective vaccine against colonization which would lead to an overall decrease in disease incidence. To do this, we selected protein candidates expressed during biofilm growth …
Evaluating Virtual Training Methods To Train Caregivers Of Individuals With Charge Syndrome To Conduct Brief Functional Analyses Conditions, Megan N. Anderson
Evaluating Virtual Training Methods To Train Caregivers Of Individuals With Charge Syndrome To Conduct Brief Functional Analyses Conditions, Megan N. Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
Literature assessing behavior among individuals with disabilities largely focuses on individuals with high incidence disabilities leaving a gap for those with rare, or low incidence, genetic syndromes. Specifically, individuals with CHARGE syndrome who exhibit a unique behavioral phenotype, as a result of numerous medical complexities, are absent in literature functionally assessing behavior. Because of this unique behavioral phenotype, caregivers of individuals with CHARGE Syndrome are likely to be most familiar and knowledgeable about their child’s behavior and should therefore be trained to be included in the functional assessment of behavior. Because CHARGE Syndrome is rare, families may have limited access …
The Temperature Dependent Mechanical Response Of M250 Maraging Steel And Its Implications On Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing, Frank M. Brinkley Iii
The Temperature Dependent Mechanical Response Of M250 Maraging Steel And Its Implications On Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing, Frank M. Brinkley Iii
Theses and Dissertations
Wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is becoming increasingly common for large scale additive manufacturing (AM) applications because of its high deposition rate (2-3 kg/hr.). The rapid temperature changes and subsequent evolution of mechanical properties during AM can lead to large distortion and residual stresses. Finite element modeling of the AM process shows promise to minimize part distortion and residual stresses through improved path planning and process parameter optimization. However, accurate material properties of M250 before and after heat treatment are needed to properly characterize the property evolution from annealed to AM, to aged. Due to limited data on annealed M250, this …
