Thomas, an American general in the Union Army during the American Civil War and one of the principal commanders in the Western Theater. The letter describes the work of a Mr. Bourlin and Rosecrans' desire to send him to work with General Thomas as Bourlin is too well known to be of further use to Rosecrans's unit. He remarks on a friend in Pontotoc being ''visited by the heartless foe'' and mentions ''cheering rumors'' about Knoxville and Ringgold. 1863.

Susan Batte mentions a cousin, Dick Batte, and his fear of being drafted into the army, and she asks if Hobbs has heard from his negroes yet. Mr. Batte writes of his recent return from some salt baths in Alabama, and his hope of soon visiting his wounded son, Howell. Howell H. Batte was a Private in Company A of the 18th Mississippi Infantry. Finally, Mr. Batte mentions that he doesn't want to bring his negroes home yet. 1863.
