This tax receipt, dated November 27, 1876, documents the payment of taxes paid by Isaac R. Wade to J. B. McCormick, the Jefferson County sheriff and tax collector, in the amount of one thousand two hundred and eleven dollars and two cents for the 1876 fiscal year. The taxes paid were for the state, county, and teachers' fund split between personal taxes and real (property) taxes.

The photograph of Charles Sumner, the leader of the anti-slavery forces in Massachusetts and a leader of the Radical Republicans in the U.S. Senate during the American Civil War, depicts Sumner in a dark suite and tie with a white shirt. A lock of Sumner's hair is attached to a card date, August 25, 1876, collected by his niece, India Hastings.

Miscellaneous document number 186 of the House of Representatives documents the testimony before the select committee concerning the whiskey frauds of Saint Louis and Milwaukee. The whiskey fraud took place between 1871-1876 during President Grant's presidency and involved the diversion of tax revenues in a conspiracy among government agents, politicians, whiskey distillers, and distributors.

This state, county, and teacher's fund tax receipt, dated January 10, 1876, documents the one hundred and ten dollar and forty-seven cent payment made by Thomas L. Darden to Jefferson County, Mississippi for fiscal year 1875. The receipt is signed by M. Howard, the sheriff and C. W. Whitney, the Jefferson County tax collector. The receipt includes and itemized list of the property that was taxed, including 787 acres of land and the list of personal and real tax.
