Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Computational Methods with Applications in Materials Science
Wheel-soil interaction simulations are critical for evaluating the performance of off-road vehicles, construction equipment, and planetary exploration systems. The Discrete Element Method (DEM) provides a physics-based approach for modeling these interactions but requires significant computational resources, making efficient use of high-performance computing (HPC) systems essential. This project evaluates the parallel performance of the open- source YADE DEM Wheel-Soil Simulator, a simulation framework developed at Mississippi State University and based on the DEM soil model of Nakanishi et al. (2020). A benchmark simulation representing a fixed 6.3% wheel-slip condition was selected to provide a consistent basis for performance evaluation. Existing benchmark …

Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Computational Methods with Applications in Materials Science
The Spin-Peierls (SP) transition is a classic phenomenon in low-dimensional quantum mechanics, wherein strong magnetoelastic coupling drives a structural lattice distortion, opening a spin gap and establishing a dimerized ground state. The SP transition is well understood in quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) materials. In the organic charge- transfer tetramethyltetrathiafulvalene (TMTTF)2X salts, pressure suppresses the SP transition, giving way to antiferromagnetism and then superconductivity. Pressure is expected to increase the two-dimensional character of the material but also to introduce geometric frustration and competing magnetic fluctuations. Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Computational Methods with Applications in Materials Science
Charge-shifting polymers are highly effective at binding nucleic acids during transport and releasing them once inside target cells. This project investigates the chemical behavior of te-pDMAEMA, (poly[2-(dimethylamino) ethyl thiomethacrylate), and the interactions between an RNA molecule and te-pDMAEMA within a water and NaCl solution that aims to mimic the cellular environment. H2B-mcherry is an RNA sequence that codes for the mCherry fluorescent protein. Molecular dynamics simulations are the methods used to analyze and visualize the physical movements of these molecules over time through Newton's laws of motion. Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Computational Methods with Applications in Materials Science
The acid-catalyzed conversion of cyclohexanol to cyclohexene is a vital chemical process across the pharmaceutical, polymer, and petrochemical industries. Zeolites are porous catalysts known for their shape and size selectivity, which makes them especially useful for this reaction by preventing the formation of bulkier, undesirable side products. In this work, we computationally explore the reaction mechanism by which cyclohexanol dehydrates at Bronsted acid sites within the zeolite frameworks MFI and FAU. To overcome the high computational cost of Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics (AIMD) while capturing long-timescale dynamics, we trained a Machine Learning Interatomic Potential (MUP) using data sampled from short …

This article analyses the expansion of vineyards in the parish of San Xiao de Vea, in the municipality of A Estrada (Galicia, Spain), as a concrete manifestation of extractive agrarian restructuring under contemporary capitalism. Drawing on land-use data, socio-metabolic indicators, and qualitative testimonies, it shows how financialization, speculative land practices, and state selectivity reorganize rural space, degrade mixed farming systems, and intensify contradictions between capital accumulation and the ecological and social conditions of reproduction. The article argues that existing green planning frameworks, shaped by market logics and technocratic indicators, are structurally incapable of confronting these dynamics. As an alternative, it …

The socialist economic calculation debate is often portrayed as a sharp and straightforward conflict between two opposing sides. While this characterization is valid given the ideological clash between defenders of capitalism and proponents of socialism, this paper offers a more nuanced perspective on the interaction between the main schools of economic thought involved in the debate, the Marxist and the Austrian. Drawing on the humanist approach of critical pedagogy developed by Brazilian philosopher Paulo Freire (1921–1997), the paper argues that the debate over socialist economic calculation is not only a clear expression of class struggle within economics. As ecological and social crises render the transformation of capitalist economic organization increasingly urgent, the resurgence of interest in democratic economic planning confronts a foundational blind spot: the systematic neglect of social reproduction. This paper argues that any genuinely needs-based planned economy must extend its scope beyond formally recognized productive activities to encompass the full spectrum of reproductive labor through which human and non-human life is sustained and regenerated. Drawing on feminist political economy and the Marxist-feminist tradition, the authors argue that meeting needs requires more than reorganizing production: it demands confronting the question of who does reproductive work, at …

The advancement of democratic economic planning theory depends crucially on improving our understanding of how technically feasible planning methods and instruments can be embedded in institutionally viable incentive structures, developing a coherent incentive-compatible as well as feasible planning procedure. Our contribution draws lessons for democratic economic planning from the historical experience with Yugoslav socialism, and especially its post-Stalinist, “contractual” phase. From the mid 1970s onwards, workers in Yugoslavia were empowered to plan their activities from the ground upward. Intended to re-energize worker participation in the construction of socialism, this experiment with economic planning from below provides useful insights for the …

In this article, I take for granted the existence of a field of social sciences called postcapitalist political economy. This field of research emanates from the critique of capitalism and seeks to establish, in theory and practice, alternative political and economic systems to capitalism. I argue that in its late and post-Soviet period (1988 – 2012), this field has mostly, but not solely, been based on debates between all-encompassing models. Analyzing its contemporary period (2013 to now), I will sustain that we are partly witnessing a transfer from a model-based approach to a modular one. I present six arguments to …

Water striders (Hemiptera: Gerridae) are skating aquatic insects with piercing-sucking mouthparts that opportunistically feed on prey trapped by surface tension. The presence or absence of water striders and other aquatic Hemiptera in water systems may be important indicators of water quality. Despite their importance, the last aquatic Hemiptera checklist for the state was published in 1988. Since this publication, humans have altered waterways to meet their needs, and Gerridae taxonomy has continued to evolve. Estimated management costs and losses due to insects and other invertebrates in soybeans during the 2025 growing season were collected and compiled from 20 states to provide a record of insect pressure and management practices for the year. These annual estimates provide a historical record of pest pressure and insect management and have been compiled in some states since 2004. Participating states accounted for 68% of soybean acreage in the United States, with near 100% participation in the southern states. The ability to rear insects in the laboratory broadens the scope of research opportunities available to the scientist. Our laboratory routinely rears the sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis (F.), for research in host plant resistance and biological control of this important sugarcane pest. Unfortunately, insect rearing is a costly process. One option to reduce cost is to hold a founder population in diapause during times when insects are not needed. These insects can then be brought out of diapause and allowed to reconstitute the colony. A procedure was developed to put larvae of the sugarcane borer into diapuase, hold these larvae …

This project investigates the complex relationship between counties that house prisons in the United States and the rurality associated with them. The central research question explores how both county characteristics, such as variables corresponding to cost of living and demographics of a county, and prison characteristics, such as programming available to inmates and staffing levels, differ across the census-designated rural-urban distinctions. Furthermore, the study examines whether modern data science methods can more accurately define and distinguish these characteristics, providing a nuanced understanding of the Prison Industrial Complex (PIC) and its manifestation across various American communities. For the first part of this study, we conducted a descriptive research study with Purdue Extension educators to determine their evaluation competencies and their perceived level of importance for evaluation activities. We also asked about their competence in evaluation methods. For part two, we interviewed Purdue Extension administrators about their perceptions of Program Evaluation as a whole within Indiana Extension. The interview protocol questions were related to perceived roles of administrators, perceived strengths and opportunities for Purdue Extension Program Evaluation efforts, evaluation knowledge needed by educators, and possible future evaluation directions for Purdue Extension. This study evaluates Working Out Loud (WOL) Resilience, a program designed to enhance resilience through peer-to-peer learning, targeting social isolation and self-determination. The WOL Resilience pilot program, delivered by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach facilitators, included 29 participants and 5 facilitators over 8 weeks. Participants engaged in weekly sessions focusing on 8 resilience attributes. Evaluation included baseline, midpoint, and post surveys; facilitator feedback forms; and interviews. Results showed improvements in resilience attributes from baseline to post-program and indicated high program acceptability and positive behavioral changes. Using data from the University of Kentucky (UK) Extension statewide community needs assessment, this study uncovers the Extension education needs of Kentuckians who are not familiar with the Extension program. Typically, the Extension program development and evaluation model begins with a needs assessment to identify and prioritize community needs, issues, and/or opportunities that can be addressed through targeted educational programming/outreach. This evaluation study examines the effectiveness of the Leadership Dixie program in enhancing leadership capacity among participants in Washington County, Utah. As a program partner, Utah State University (USU) Extension conducted the evaluation on the program’s 25th class, comprising 27 participants (N = 27). The program, characterized by 10 monthly “Challenge Day” field tours, was evaluated using two instruments to collect data on participant learning and satisfaction levels, overall program experience, demographics, and impacts on social capital, interpersonal leadership skills, community engagement, and volunteerism. We conducted an extensive literature review to develop an assessment tool with both quantitative and qualitative items that can be used to conduct a statewide needs assessment of professional development needs in program evaluation for Extension educators and similar non-profit organizations. This tool can be used to identify priority topics for evaluating professional development trainings and materials. It can be easily distributed via Qualtrics. The results of the literature review and the needs assessment survey instrument are shared.

Maternal and infant health in the U.S. has worsened, with rising rates of maternal mortality, gestational diabetes, postpartum depression, and infant mortality. Prenatal education is a proven strategy to improve outcomes, yet many expecting parents rely on unvetted information or lack access to reliable resources. To address this gap, a pilot prenatal education program was implemented through Utah State University Extension to improve knowledge, attitudes, and intentions related to breastfeeding, nutrition, mental health, and other key topics. Cooperative Extension Services and non-profit farm advocacy organizations assist farmers through network development and resource referrals to access information and services needed to operate resilient farms. One method for building networks and assessing existing resources is through participatory asset-mapping tools to document community strengths. In this research brief, we describe the results of a pilot study to test, evaluate, and refine an asset-mapping tool based on Appreciative Inquiry principles. Career development is increasingly recognized as a lifelong process beginning in early childhood. While elementary students are developmentally ready to explore careers, few resources and strategies exist to support this age group. This qualitative, exploratory study investigates how Extension can support elementary career education by examining practices and perspectives of public-school teachers and administrators. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with educators in two urban elementary schools. Grounded theory methods revealed three key themes: barriers, facilitators, and supports/resources needed.
