Understanding The Impact Of Tropical Sea Surface Temperature Biases On The Projection Of North American Precipitation, William Tyler Edwards Aug 2024

Understanding The Impact Of Tropical Sea Surface Temperature Biases On The Projection Of North American Precipitation, William Tyler Edwards

Theses and Dissertations

Tropical SST biases in climate models significantly impact the projection of US precipitation. To show how these biases affect US precipitation simulation, I conducted nudging and flux adjustment experiments using the CESM1. In the nudging experiments, observed SSTs were prescribed over the three tropical oceans, and were compared to the control model to assess the effects of tropical SST biases. For the flux adjustment experiments, climatological SST and momentum fluxes were nudged towards the observed climatology, allowing us to characterize the effects of SST biases on the future projections of precipitation. Results indicate SST biases significantly affect the simulation of …

Three Rival Versions Of Physical Education: A Macintyrean Analysis Of The Field, Clayton Michael Whalen Aug 2024

Three Rival Versions Of Physical Education: A Macintyrean Analysis Of The Field, Clayton Michael Whalen

Theses and Dissertations

At both the theoretical and applied levels of analysis, the field of physical education is all too often completely incoherent. There appears to be little agreement as to how school-based programs ought to be implemented or what the goals of such programs really are. No two physical educators run their programs exactly the same and, chances are, those physical educators likely have wildly different understandings of their field and its proper place within the education of our youth. Borrowing from the title of moral philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre’s (1990) book, Three Rival Versions of Moral Enquiry, I’ve chosen to describe the …

Expanding The Emotional Cascade Model Of Borderline Personality Disorder With Negative Thoughts, Thought Control Strategies, Suicide Attempts, And Non-Suicidal Self-Injury, Courtney K. Mason

Theses and Dissertations

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is an impairing mental illness and has a core component of emotional dysregulation. Evidence suggests the emotional cascade model describes how this emotional dysregulation leads to engaging in risky and life-threatening behaviors, such as non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Specifically, this model describes rumination as a cognitive component that links the emotional and behavioral dysregulation. The current study aimed to expand the model by investigating how individuals with heightened BPD traits engage in NSSI and in cognitive strategies to cope with their negative affect. Specifically, it was investigated whether behaviors like suicide attempts and cognitions differentiated between those …

Designing And Understanding Physical Behavior Of Polymeric Materials, Chinmoy Saha Aug 2024

Designing And Understanding Physical Behavior Of Polymeric Materials, Chinmoy Saha

Theses and Dissertations

Organic conjugated polymers (CPs) are emerging materials for advanced electronic applications such as organic photovoltaics (OPVs), field-effect transistors (OFETs), light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), flexible and wearable electronics, and biomedicals. High-spin donor-acceptor CPs have been investigated for their potential applications in magnetic and spintronic devices. Inter-chain charge transfer among these high-spin polymers mainly depends on the nature of the local structure of the thin film and pi-stacking between the polymer chains. However, the microscopic structural details of high-spin polymeric materials are rarely studied, especially in the liquid phase, and remain largely unexplored. This study examined the effects of oligomer chain length, side …

Examining The Role Of Hypertension-Induced Mechanotransduction On Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells And Vascular Calcification, Jessica Moon Aug 2024

Examining The Role Of Hypertension-Induced Mechanotransduction On Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells And Vascular Calcification, Jessica Moon

Theses and Dissertations

Cardiovascular disease is the world’s number 1 killer. The cardiovascular system helps to pump blood throughout the human body and maintain a systemic balance. However, medial vascular calcification results when this system becomes off balance, such as in cases of high blood pressure leading to hypertension. Many factors are involved in this process, but the most important is the vascular smooth muscle cell phenotypic switch to osteoblast-like cells. When vascular smooth muscle cells are subject to mechanical stimuli, mechanotransduction occurs, causing an intracellular signaling cascade leading to a phenotypic switch associated with the Wnt signaling pathway and osteogenic markers. There …

Buffering The Strained Relation Between Masculinity And Social Support With Self-Compassion, Nathan Barclay Aug 2024

Buffering The Strained Relation Between Masculinity And Social Support With Self-Compassion, Nathan Barclay

Theses and Dissertations

Men experience high rates of negative health outcomes and often have difficulty identifying and seeking support for their issues. Traditional masculine socialization has been identified as a potential determinant of this effect, as masculine ideals often conflict with prosocial help-seeking behaviors. Men who experience this sort of socialization need better support for their mental health and are less likely to seek it out in a professional setting. Therefore, other models of support, like social support, should be investigated. Additionally, factors that impact the way that men perceive social support should be explored, one of which may be self-compassion. The current …
