Pathogen Entrance And Development Of Disease During Infection Of The American Channel Catfish Ictalurus Punctatus By The Enterobacterium Edwardsiella Ictaluri, Simon Menanteau-Ledouble

Theses and Dissertations

Since being first reported in the late 1980ies, the Enterobacterium Edwardsiella ictaluri has rose in prevalence to become one of the two most damaging pathogens affecting the channel catfish industry. Despite this significance of the pathogen, understanding of the development of the disease, especially its route of entry into the host and the earlier stages of the infection, is still incomplete. A series of challenges were conducted using bioluminescent E. ictaluri either by infecting fish through immersion or topical application of the bacteria directly on the intact or abraded epithelium. This showed that abraded fish developed septicemia and died faster …

Movements, Relatedness And Modeled Genetic Manipulation Of White-Tailed Deer, Stephen Lance Webb Dec 2009

Movements, Relatedness And Modeled Genetic Manipulation Of White-Tailed Deer, Stephen Lance Webb

Theses and Dissertations

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have been intensively studied across their range. However, many aspects of the white-tailed deer’s ecology have not been studied or are difficult to study. The advent of global positioning system (GPS) collar technology and molecular genetics techniques now allows researchers to collect fine-scale and cryptic phenomena. In addition, selective harvest of male white-tailed deer, based on antler size, has not been critically evaluated. Thus, development and use of quantitative genetics models will be useful for elucidating the effects of selective harvest on mean population antler size. I used GPS collar technology to further understand white-tailed deer …

Obstacle Array Drag Coefficient Parametric Response Surface Analysis, Mouthgalya Ganapathy Dec 2009

Obstacle Array Drag Coefficient Parametric Response Surface Analysis, Mouthgalya Ganapathy

Theses and Dissertations

Throughout literature, one finds where numerous methodologies and models have been developed to predict the effect of surface roughness on a flat surface. Many of the models utilize a drag coefficient as one of the necessary parameters. In urban settings with groups of buildings, the drag coefficient on an individual obstacle would be determined by parameters like wind direction and the relative positioning of a building, in addition to Reynolds number and shape. Computational experiments were performed to simulate the fluid flow around a single row and two rows of “cube” obstacles. Based on dimensional analysis, the drag coefficient was …

Optimal Control Of Voltage And Power In Mvdc Multi-Zonal Shipboard Power System, Padmavathy Kankanala

Theses and Dissertations

Recent advancements in Voltage Source Converters (VSCs) of high-voltage and high-power rating had a significant impact on the development of Multi-Terminal HVDC (MTDC) power transmission systems. The U.S. Navy has proposed Multi-Zonal Medium Voltage DC (MVDC) Shipboard Power System (SPS) architecture for the next generation of their surface combatant. A Multi-Zonal MVDC SPS consists of several VSCs exchanging power through a DC network. Following a system fault or damage, the current flow pattern in the DC distribution grid will change and the DC voltages across the VSCs will assume new values. DC voltage reference or power reference settings of VSCs …

Parallel Viterbi Search For Continuous Speech Recognition On A Multi-Core Architecture, Naveen Parihar Dec 2009

Parallel Viterbi Search For Continuous Speech Recognition On A Multi-Core Architecture, Naveen Parihar

Theses and Dissertations

State-of-the-art speech-recognition systems can successfully perform simple tasks in real-time on most computers, when the tasks are performed in controlled and noiseree environments. However, current algorithms and processors are not yet powerful enough for real-time large-vocabulary conversational speech recognition in noisy, real-world environments. Parallel processing can improve the real-time performance of speech recognition systems and increase their applicability, and developing an effective approach to parallelization is especially important given the recent trend toward multi-core processor design. In this dissertation, we introduce methods for parallelizing a single-pass across-word n-gram lexical-tree based Viterbi recognizer, which is the most popular architecture for Viterbi-based …

Flathead Catfish Stock Characteristics In The Pascagoula River Following Hurricane Katrina, Russell M. Barabe Dec 2009

Flathead Catfish Stock Characteristics In The Pascagoula River Following Hurricane Katrina, Russell M. Barabe

Theses and Dissertations

Flathead catfish stocks in the Pascagoula River were decimated by the passage of Hurricane Katrina. Age-0 fish survived the storm, producing a strong 2005 year-class. Reproduction by the remaining adults and/or downstream movement from tributaries produced an additional strong cohort in 2006. The strong 2005 year-class resulted in the capture of a high proportion of two-year-old fish in 2007. In 2008, a high proportion of two- and three-year-old fish were captured, illustrating the high rate of survival of the 2005 year-class, and the presence of a strong 2006 year-class. The flathead catfish population of the Pascagoula River was dominated by …

Fusion Of Spectral Reflectance And Derivative Information For Robust Hyperspectral Land Cover Classification, Hemanth Reddy Kalluri

Theses and Dissertations

Developments in sensor technology have made high resolution hyperspectral remote sensing data available to the remote sensing analyst for ground cover classification and target recognition tasks. Further, with limited ground-truth data in many real-life operating scenarios, such hyperspectral classification systems often employ dimensionality reduction algorithms. In this thesis, the efficacy of spectral derivative features for hyperspectral analysis is studied. These studies are conducted within the context of both single and multiple classifier systems. Finally, a modification of existing classification techniques is proposed and tested on spectral reflectance and derivative features that adapts the classification systems to the characteristics of the …

Changes In Chinese Policy Toward North Korean Refugees Over The Last Two Decades, Shinhea Eom Dec 2009

Changes In Chinese Policy Toward North Korean Refugees Over The Last Two Decades, Shinhea Eom

Theses and Dissertations

China does not view North Koreans who are staying in its territory as refugees and routinely deports them to North Korea. However, in the early 21st century, there have been some cases in which China has allowed North Koreans to leave China instead of sending them back to North Korea. This thesis examines how China’s North Korean refugee policy has changed over the last two decades and whether international factors have influenced this policy. The results suggest that in the 1990’s China gave priority to the repatriation agreement with North Korea. However, in the 2000’s from its own experience with …

Osteogenic Regulatory Mechanisms Activated By Pressure In Aortic Heart Valve, Carol Andrea Pregonero Gamez Dec 2009

Osteogenic Regulatory Mechanisms Activated By Pressure In Aortic Heart Valve, Carol Andrea Pregonero Gamez

Theses and Dissertations

Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) is the most common cause of aortic valve failure and replacement in the elderly population, affecting 25% of the population over 65 years of age. Current pharmacological approaches for preventing the onset and progression of calcific aortic valve disease have not shown consistent benefits in clinical studies. Differentiation of valvular interstitial cells (VICs) into osteoblast–like cells is an integral step in the calcification process. Although clinical evidence suggests hypertension as a potential candidate contributing to the development of CAVD, the underlying molecular mechanisms that cause de-differentiation remain unclear. The present study investigates the role of …

Faunal Communities Of Temporary Wetlands Of Upland And Floodplain Public Forested Lands In North Mississippi, Katherine E. Edwards Dec 2009

Faunal Communities Of Temporary Wetlands Of Upland And Floodplain Public Forested Lands In North Mississippi, Katherine E. Edwards

Theses and Dissertations

I conducted surveys of amphibian, reptile, and small mammal communities surrounding 4 isolated, upland and 6 stream-connected temporary wetlands on Tombigbee National Forest and Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge in north Mississippi from May 2001 - March 2006. Trap captures yielded 17 amphibian species (n = 11,142), 21 reptile species (n = 541), and 10 small mammal species (n = 472). Upland pools supported greater diversity of Ambystomatid salamanders, anurans, lizards, and mice (Peromyscus spp.), than floodplain pools. Factors including landscape position of pools, proximity to alternate water sources, and barriers to dispersal potentially influenced faunal communities of temporary wetlands. Infrared-triggered …

In Vitro Digestibilty Of Ryegrass Supplemented With Hay, Corn, Or Soybean Hulls, Chadwick Warren Dunaway Dec 2009

In Vitro Digestibilty Of Ryegrass Supplemented With Hay, Corn, Or Soybean Hulls, Chadwick Warren Dunaway

Theses and Dissertations

An in vitro continuous culture rumen fermentation experiment was conducted to evaluate digestibility of annual ryegrass either fed alone or annual ryegrass supplemented with hay, corn, or soybean hulls. Nutrient disappearance of feedstuffs offered were not different (P > 0.05) as a percentage of the diet however there were differences (P < 0.05) in amounts of individual nutrients digested for each treatment. Ammonia-N concentrations of culture samples were less (P < 0.05) for vessels fed corn as a supplement however there was no difference (P > 0.05) among vessels fed either ryegrass alone or supplemented with hay or soybean hulls. This may indicate a more efficient use of available nutrients from annual ryegrass when corn was supplemented.

The Role Of Cattle And Gulf Coast Ticks (Amblyomma Maculatum) In The Epidemiology Of Rickettsia Parkeri Infection, Kristine T. Edwards Dec 2009

The Role Of Cattle And Gulf Coast Ticks (Amblyomma Maculatum) In The Epidemiology Of Rickettsia Parkeri Infection, Kristine T. Edwards

Theses and Dissertations

I hypothesized cattle and Gulf Coast ticks (GCT), Amblyomma maculatum, may be involved in epidemiology of Rickettsia parkeri infection. I demonstrated transient rickettsemia by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the 17 kilodalton (kDa) gene in 33% (2/6) of calves experimentally exposed to R. parkeri either by direct inoculation or by placement of R. parkeri-infected GCT on calves’ ears. Calves (4/4) receiving GCT developed lesions at attachment sites consistent with a pathologic condition known as “gotch” ear whether or not GCT were infected with R. parkeri, suggesting the condition is related to GCT attachment and not to rickettsial infection. In calves …

Flow Structure/Particle Interaction In The Small Bronchial Tubes, Belabahen Soni Dec 2009

Flow Structure/Particle Interaction In The Small Bronchial Tubes, Belabahen Soni

Theses and Dissertations

The laminar flow in the small bronchial tubes is quite complex due to the presence of vortex-dominated, secondary flows. Contributing to this complexity are the geometrical characteristics of the bronchial tubes that include asymmetric and nonplanar branching. These secondary flow fields play a crucial role in particle deposition; however, the actual mechanisms that determine the particle distributions are not fully understood. The research reported here increases understanding of this phenomenon by studying flow structure/ particle interaction in the small bronchial tubes for steady and unsteady respiratory conditions. Specifically, the effects of simultaneous nonplanar and asymmetric branching were investigated. The nonplanar …

The effect of yields of lighter fractions on fiber separation from size fractions was also investigated. At low yields of lighter fraction (5%), the quantity of fiber product separated was 3.7, 1.3 and 4.8% by weight of SBM, CSM and WM respectively. At high yields of lighter fractions (15%), the quantity of …

Gamma-Ray Bursts: New Parameters For Measuring Energy Dependent Spectral Lag Times, Phillip Jefferson Durst Dec 2009

Gamma-Ray Bursts: New Parameters For Measuring Energy Dependent Spectral Lag Times, Phillip Jefferson Durst

Theses and Dissertations

A new method for measuring the hardness-intensity correlation (HIC) present in gamma-ray bursts (GRB) is developed. This method is used to measure the HIC for 100 single-peak gamma-ray bursts, 17 with known redshifts. The HIC is thus shown to be a consequence of energy-dependent lag times between hard and soft photons. Parameters derived from time profile fits using a modified double sigmoidal function are used to calculate a new set of lag time parameters for bursts, and these parameters are analyzed statistically to look for correlations with intrinsic GRB properties. This analysis shows that GRB red shift is related to …

Effects Of Various Fumigants And Alternative Processing Methods On The Safety, Volatile Composition, And Sensory Quality Of Dry Cured Ham, Ramandeep Kaur Sekhon

Theses and Dissertations

Randomized complete block designs with three replications were utilized to evaluate the effects of fumigation with sulfuryl fluoride (SF) (0, 12, 24, 36 and 72 mg/L), phosphine (PH3) (0, 200 and 1000 ppm at 48 hr), methyl bromide (MB) (0, 4, 8, 16, and 32 mg/L for 48 hr), carbon dioxide (CO2) (0, 60% at 48 hr and 60% at 96 hr) and ozone (O3) (0 ppm and 175 ppm for 48 hr) on the volatile flavor compound concentrations in dry cured ham. Fluoride and SF concentrations increased (P < 0.05) in dry cured hams as SF fumigation concentration increased, but all samples contained fluoride and SF concentrations below the legal limits of 20 and 0.01 ppm, respectively. Also, as phosphine fumigation concentration increased, the residual concentration of phosphine also increased in the hams (P < 0.05), but all samples contained levels that were lower than the legal limit of phosphine in stored food products (0.01 ppm). Minimal differences existed in the presence and concentration of aroma active compounds in fumigated hams when compared to the control. Triangle tests indicated that consumers could not discern (P > 0.75) between the control hams and the fumigated hams. This study …

A Method For Integrating Heterogeneous Datasets Based On Go Term Similarity, Chamali Lankara Thanthiriwatte Dec 2009

A Method For Integrating Heterogeneous Datasets Based On Go Term Similarity, Chamali Lankara Thanthiriwatte

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a method for integrating heterogeneous gene/protein datasets at the functional level based on Gene Ontology term similarity. Often biologists want to integrate heterogeneous data sets obtain from different biological samples. A major challenge in this process is how to link the heterogeneous datasets. Currently, the most common approach is to link them through common reference database identifiers which tend to result in small number of matching identifiers. This is due to lack of standard accession schemes. Due to this problem, biologists may not recognize the underlying biological phenomena revealed by a combination of the data but by …
