Elementary & Secondary Education Faculty Research

Background: To inform STEM education for benefiting emerging bilingual (EB) and English fluent (EF) students, the present study evaluated the order effects of integrating science and arts within a large-scale, ongoing effort investigating the efficacies of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)-aligned Science Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) methodologies to provide more equitable opportunities to students to learn science through Arts integration (STEAM). The experiment examines the curriculum integrating order of implementing combinations of STEM and STEAM approaches in fifth grade life and physical science instruction, comparing (STEM → STEAM) vs (STEAM → STEM).

Introduction

Health care workers (HCW) are at risk for occupational blood borne pathogen exposures (BBPE). Effective prevention and management of BBPEs relies upon reporting and post-exposure follow-up protocol adherence. As post-exposure monitoring completion is largely unexplored, seven years of a university healthcare system’s BBPE exposure data was explored and compared to documented rates.

Methods

The Marshall Health Occupational Health and Wellness division collected seven years (2012-2018) of BBPE follow-up monitoring adherence rates and demographic data. Data for HCW occupation, exposure incident, and source patient disease status were evaluated. Differences were analyzed with Chi square, Fischer Exact and logistic regression tests. …

Each year, hundreds of early childhood educators from the many parts of the world travel to a small town in the northern part of Italy to study the arts-based, project focused, a child-initiated method known as the Reggio Emilia approach. This unique approach focuses on infant-toddler through preschool and primary education. While teachers are engaged in professional learning and growth, it is hard to determine how many early childhood programs and classrooms are truly influenced by the Reggio Emilia approach.
