A Research Framework For The Impact Of Cultural Differences On It Outsourcing, Anil Gurung, Edmund Pratter Sep 2014

A Research Framework For The Impact Of Cultural Differences On It Outsourcing, Anil Gurung, Edmund Pratter

Management Information Systems Faculty Research

Contracting Global Virtual Teams as part of global IT outsourcing is currently en vogue. As might be expected when virtual team members are from different countries, cultural factors play an important role in the success of outsourcing. However, there have been very few studies that assess the effect of culture on IT outsourcing and virtual teams. This conceptual paper addresses this oversight by looking at the effect of cultural differences on IT outsourcing and virtual teams' performance. The applicable literature on outsourcing, virtual teams and culture is analyzed and a framework of offshore outsourcing success is developed. This framework includes …

The Threat Of Terrorism And The Changing Public Discourse On Immigration After September 11, Joshua Woods, C. Damien Arthur Aug 2014

The Threat Of Terrorism And The Changing Public Discourse On Immigration After September 11, Joshua Woods, C. Damien Arthur

Political Science Faculty Research

This article uses articles from the opinion-leading press to investigate how the news media's repertoire of negative portrayals changed after the September 11 terrorist attacks. It is based on a systematic random sample of 360 articles from two, opinion-leading newspapers---one known for its liberal slant (New York Times) and one known for its conservative slant (Wall Street Journal). The sample is drawn from a large population of articles published over a six-year period (1998-2004). The findings show that the percentage of negative frames involving not only terrorism but also other non-terrorist threats increased significantly after September 11. The elevated frequency …

Cost-Savings Achieved In Two Semesters Through The Adoption Of Open Educational Resources, John Levi Hilton Iii, T. Jared Robinson, David Wiley, J. Dale Ackerman Apr 2014

Cost-Savings Achieved In Two Semesters Through The Adoption Of Open Educational Resources, John Levi Hilton Iii, T. Jared Robinson, David Wiley, J. Dale Ackerman

Entrepreneurship Faculty Research

Textbooks represent a significant portion of the overall cost of higher education in the United States. The burden of these costs is typically shouldered by students, those who support them, and the taxpayers who fund the grants and student loans which pay for textbooks. Open educational resources (OER) provide students a way to receive high quality learning materials at little or no cost to students. We report on the cost savings achieved by students at eight colleges when these colleges began utilizing OER in place of traditional commercial textbooks.

Home Tweet Home: Can Social Media Define A Community?, Amy Rock

ASA Annual Conference

The geography of the Appalachian region has been defined in many ways, from the extent of its mountains to the extent of its poverty. Appalachia as a community is harder to identify on a map. Ulack and Raitz (1982) found that insiders tend to define it more broadly than outsiders, although there is some agreement by both that the central part of the region is definitely Appalachian. The stereotypical tendency of Appalachians to be “reclusive” or “clannish” (Algeo 2003; Straw 2006) contrasted with the highly public nature of social media suggests that self-identification as physically or culturally part of the …

Examining The Impact Of The Great Recession On The Commuting Patterns Of Workers In West Virginia, Todd Sink, Brian Ceh Mar 2014

Examining The Impact Of The Great Recession On The Commuting Patterns Of Workers In West Virginia, Todd Sink, Brian Ceh

ASA Annual Conference

The Great Recession (2007-2009) continues to effect workers in West Virginia. For many people throughout the state it has become increasingly difficult to not only find a job, but to be hired. People can face job searches that can extend for months, with little or no success. It is not well known, however, if an unfavorable economic climate has caused people to travel farther abroad for employment. This paper uses Longitudinal Employer Household Dynamics Origin-Destination Employment Statistics (LODES) for the period 2002-2011 from the U.S. Census to evaluate the impact of the Great Recession on the commuting patterns of workers …

A Qualitative Life Course Study: Significant Life Events In The Lives Of Appalachian First-Generation College Graduates, Peggy Henderson Murphy Mar 2014

A Qualitative Life Course Study: Significant Life Events In The Lives Of Appalachian First-Generation College Graduates, Peggy Henderson Murphy

ASA Annual Conference

Traditionally, the Appalachian region has struggled with poverty and isolation. Although in recent decades many of the outer Appalachian counties have stabilized economically the central region of Appalachia that includes West Virginia, southeastern Ohio and Eastern Kentucky continues to have the highest concentration of distressed and at-risk counties in the country. One of the most effective ways of combating poverty and isolation is through education, yet, educational opportunities for Appalachian youth have been limited. This study used a qualitative approach; six Appalachian youths who had either recently graduated from university or who were in their junior or senior year of …

Demographic Trends In Appalachia And Implications For Enrollments In Higher Education: The Case Of Marshall University, Joshua Hagen, James Leonard, Aaron Nelson, Britt Arcardipane, Delbert Cannoy, Patrick Donovan, Godwin Dijetror Mar 2014

Demographic Trends In Appalachia And Implications For Enrollments In Higher Education: The Case Of Marshall University, Joshua Hagen, James Leonard, Aaron Nelson, Britt Arcardipane, Delbert Cannoy, Patrick Donovan, Godwin Dijetror

ASA Annual Conference

Demographic Trends in Appalachia and Implications for Enrollments in Higher Education: The Case of Marshall University Joshua Hagen, James Leonard, and Aaron Nelson Given Appalachia’s relatively depressed economic profile and limited opportunities, especially for young adults, out-migration to other regions has long been a prominent feature of the region. More recently, declining fertility rates have contributed to create a population that increasing skews toward older age groups, both in absolute numbers and as percentages of the total. This demographic dynamic has broad implications for the socio-economic future of the region. Some of these challenges, like coping with health care costs …

Making It Work: Factors That Influence The Success Of Programs At Rural Community Colleges, Rebecca Calwell Jan 2014

Making It Work: Factors That Influence The Success Of Programs At Rural Community Colleges, Rebecca Calwell

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Community colleges are expected to contribute to economic development efforts by implementing new programs that respond to the needs of business and industry. Program development is complex, especially for community colleges in rural areas where business and industry are scarce. This qualitative study explores the factors that influence successful occupational programs at rural community colleges. Participants included administrators, faculty members, and students associated with three rural community colleges in West Virginia, as well as one state-level administrator and a former community college president. This study indicates the importance of five factors that influence the success of occupational programs: demand for …

The Geography Of Stuck: Exceptions To Brain Drain In West Virginia, Lindsay Heinemann Jan 2014

The Geography Of Stuck: Exceptions To Brain Drain In West Virginia, Lindsay Heinemann

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Brain drain, also known as “human capital flight,” can be defined as “the mass emigration of technically skilled people from one country to another country” (Weeks, 2008, p. 250) or one state to another state. This theory surmises that highly skilled people or those with high education levels are more likely to migrate from places with little to no economic opportunities to places with better economic and job opportunities. West Virginia has largely been a state with few high paying or prestigious job opportunities. So why do highly educated people stay in West Virginia? Using census data and personal interviews, …

West Virginia's Low Percentage Of Population With At Least A Four-Year College Education, Britt Arcadipane Jan 2014

West Virginia's Low Percentage Of Population With At Least A Four-Year College Education, Britt Arcadipane

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This report analyzes key factors concerning West Virginia’s rank as last in the nation with residents that have obtained a four-year bachelor’s degree or higher. This quantitative study will examine political, economic, and sociological components at the state and county level using data collected primarily from various government and state institutions. An emphasis is placed on three main factors: poverty, parental education levels, and low socio-economic status (SES) high schools. Other variables analyzed will be high school graduation and dropout rates, free or reduced-price lunch (FRPL) eligibility, college retention rates, first-generation student population, and the influence of resource-extractive industries. Poverty …

Development Of Moral Didacticism In Children: A Cross-Cultural Study, Sixtus Obinna Iwuji Jan 2014

Development Of Moral Didacticism In Children: A Cross-Cultural Study, Sixtus Obinna Iwuji

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The use of folktales and fables in explaining the physical and spiritual worlds to children is cross-cultural, and precedes recorded history. Prior studies indicate a developmental process in children’s understanding of fables and folktales (Jose, D’Anna, & Krieg, 2005; Narvaez, Gleason, Mitchell, & Bentley, 1999). However, no known study has examined whether this developmental process is cross-cultural or culture specific. No known study also, has examined whether children as young as 6 years of age are aware that fables and folktales are non-historical. The present study fills these observed gaps by examining moral didacticism in children aged 6-11 years. The …

Poland’S Place In The Soviet Bloc: Historical And Cultural Linkages, Political Transformation, And Everyday Economic Alternatives In Gdańsk And Wałbrzych, Stephen W. Mays Jan 2014

Poland’S Place In The Soviet Bloc: Historical And Cultural Linkages, Political Transformation, And Everyday Economic Alternatives In Gdańsk And Wałbrzych, Stephen W. Mays

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The aim of this study is to arrive at a holistic understanding of Poland’s place in the Soviet Bloc, 1945 – 1989. Throughout, the study considers historical and cultural linkages between Poland and Russia, drawing parallels and contrasts which have shaped the destinies of both nations. It explains how Poland became part of the Soviet system, the successes and failures of the system, and how common people adapted to and eventually altered the system. Special emphasis is placed on the ‘lived experience’ of the last decade of socialism (1979 – 1989), including oral histories of subsistence economic strategies, black market …

Discourse Analysis Of Interpersonal Features In Esl And Jsl Textbooks, Yukina Takahira Jan 2014

Discourse Analysis Of Interpersonal Features In Esl And Jsl Textbooks, Yukina Takahira

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Textbooks play an important role in language classrooms. They serve as models for language use in a target community and significantly influence language learners in their development of language use and perceptions of the target community. In traditional grammar teaching, teachers seldom look into linguistic choices at the discourse level and mainly use language textbooks to focus on grammatical accuracy at the sentence level. Language cannot be divorced from the context and culture of its use; contextual and cultural aspects of language are inherent in discourse. Language textbooks provide not only the needed linguistic resources, but also reflect the interpersonal …
