This interview is one of series conducted concerning the Oral History of Appalachia. At the time of the interview, Mr. Gearhart was a County Attorney for Boyd County, Kentucky. The interview begins with an autobiographical discussion, including life in Floyd County during the Great Depression and early school. Mr. Gearhart also discusses: Lee's Junior college; Marshall University (then College) and some of his professors there; Duke University law school; opening a law practice; election to County Attorney in 1953; his most important series of cases; work with other lawyers, and relations and acquaintances with the Republican and Democratic parties.

This interview is one of series conducted concerning the Oral History of Appalachia. Mr. Neal begins by talking about his first job in the coal mines, his early childhood, home remedies for illnesses, and some of their neighbors. He continues with the election of the National Labor Board in 1946 in Widen. He mentions the Depression briefly, then the interview turns back to a discussion of coal mining again. He also briefly discusses baseball and people he knew.

Highlights of the interview include her childhood in rural Wayne County, the Great Depression, her work during World War II in food rationing and the sale of war bonds, the career of her husband Oscar Watts who was a state legislator and the first president of the Tri-State Airport, her wedding reception, Christmases in the country, and the day she learned to drive.

Mr. Crook, a semi-retired employee of the International Nickel Plant in Huntington, discusses his experiences with the company, thereby touching on a variety of subjects concerning the Nickel Plant, including working conditions, safety hazards, various strikes, and the apprenticeship program. Grades, Grading, And The Law, Nicholas George Evans

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The problem is to devise for institutions of higher learning a model policy regarding grades and grading practices, specifically with respect to (1) grade appeal procedures, including instructor rights and student rights; (2) methods of determining grades; (3) definitions of grades; (4) responsibility for assigning grades; and (5) cheating regulations insofar as they affect grading policies. A model policy should assist colleges and universities in achieving conformity with recent court decisions and avoiding the many problems associated with litigation. At the same time, institutions should then be able to maintain their academic standards and provide academic fairness for all students. …
