Portrayals Of Gender In The Media: A Content Analysis Approach To Identifying Gender Oppression And Legitimation Of Patriarchy In Magazine Advertisements, Autumn M. O’Toole
Portrayals Of Gender In The Media: A Content Analysis Approach To Identifying Gender Oppression And Legitimation Of Patriarchy In Magazine Advertisements, Autumn M. O’Toole
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Advertisements are among the most pervasive forms of media. Portrayals of gender in advertisements constitute a significant subject of social research based on this pervasiveness and the influence that advertising media have on audiences. This influence is based on the notion that media is an institutional vehicle for ideas about products, lifestyles, and oppression. In this study, the institution of media is examined through an analysis of representations of patriarchy and gender oppression in media advertisements. The primary research question is: In what ways can we identify gender oppression and the support of hegemonic masculinity and systems of patriarchy in …

A Coprological Survey Of Golden Mantled Howler Monkeys (Alouatta Palliata Palliata) In The Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica, Jess M. Conatser
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Interactions between free-ranging primates and their associated parasitic forms continue to be a point of interest in ecology for several reasons. External and internal parasitism is not atypical for wild populations of primates, and the repercussions of these relationships can range from benign to life-threatening and capable of altering the structure of naturally occurring groups. The ecological relationship between the golden mantled howler monkey (Alouatta palliata palliata) and its host-specific ectoparasite, the howler monkey bot fly (Alouattamyia baeri) poses significant potential detriment to the overall body quality and success of the host primate. A. p. palliata has also been recorded …

A Study Of The Fepac Accredited Graduate Forensic Science Programs' Curricula, Catherine Genice Rushton
A Study Of The Fepac Accredited Graduate Forensic Science Programs' Curricula, Catherine Genice Rushton
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The National Institute of Justice (1999) and the National Academy of Sciences (2009) recommended that forensic science training shift from on-the-job training to formal education. However, the reports cited inconsistencies in the curricula of the forensic science degree programs as an impediment to this. The Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC) Standards were created to address this issue; however, no studies have been conducted to determine how the accreditation standards have been implemented by the FEPAC accredited graduate programs. This study evaluated the self-study responses (n=11) and website information (n=17) specific to FEPAC’s Graduate Curriculum Standards to determine how …
Limited Trabecular Bone Density Heterogeneity In The Human Skeleton, Habiba Chirchir Phd
Limited Trabecular Bone Density Heterogeneity In The Human Skeleton, Habiba Chirchir Phd
Biological Sciences Faculty Research
There is evidence for variation in trabecular bone density and volume within an individual skeleton, albeit in a few anatomical sites, which is partly dependent on mechanical loading. However, little is known regarding the basic variation in trabecular bone density throughout the skeleton in healthy human adults. This is because research on bone density has been confined to a few skeletal elements, which can be readily measured using available imaging technology particularly in clinical settings. This study comprehensively investigates the distribution of trabecular bone density within the human skeleton in nine skeletal sites (femur, proximal and distal tibia, third metatarsal, …

Capitalizing On Distinctiveness: Creating West Virginia For A New Economy, Brian A. Hoey
Capitalizing On Distinctiveness: Creating West Virginia For A New Economy, Brian A. Hoey
Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Research
This paper explores use of images and ideas of place to promote particular social and economic agendas within the regional context of Appalachia. Despite prevailing imageries of backwardness and isolation that adhere to the region, as well as recent history of often-bleak economic conditions, communities such as Huntington, West Virginia, are ideal places to observe inventive forms of community-building, place-making, and place-marketing that borrow from emerging cultural and economic models and stand in sharp contrast to a once-dominant paradigm that encouraged capital investment by relying simply on tax breaks and the provision of cheap land and labor to attract large, …

“The Preservation Of Indigenous Knowledge In Contemporary Mexico In El Cultivo Del Maíz En Yojovi By Javier Castellanos Martínez.”, Ida Day
Modern Languages Faculty Research
The author applies an ecocritical perspective to the study of Javier Castellanos' 1988 monograph of Yojovi corn farmers' testimonies, El cultivo del maíz en Yojovi. The author's ecocritical lens establishes Yojovi rights to determine food sustainability practices and to determine land resource use. In particular, the author examines the conflicts between Yojovi knowledge of corn varieties and their cultivation and the pressure to alter their practices to adhere to genetically modified corn crop production. She also reveals the conflicts between Yojovi narratives that situate humans within their natural habitats and the Western scientific paradigm's narratives that tend to separate humans …
Lighting The Fuse: Building Regional Identity Through Public Library Services In Rural Central Appalachia, Laura C. Mcpherson
Lighting The Fuse: Building Regional Identity Through Public Library Services In Rural Central Appalachia, Laura C. Mcpherson
ASA Annual Conference
This presentation will relate survey and interview data that explore the perceptions and beliefs of librarians concerning the role of public libraries in fostering regional identity with a focus on libraries in rural Central Appalachia. As public libraries across the nation work to strengthen their connections to the communities they serve, the role of the library is being refined and redefined in relation to local needs and interests. During the past decade, the archival branch of librarianship has come to terms with the notion that by denying the inherently subjective nature of core archival duties such as acquisition, description, and …
Migrations Of Old Time Appalachian Fiddling Styles., Susan Eike Spalding, Aisha Ivey, Page Mcclean
Migrations Of Old Time Appalachian Fiddling Styles., Susan Eike Spalding, Aisha Ivey, Page Mcclean
ASA Annual Conference
The focus of Aisha’s research is the migration of traditional old time fiddling styles from the Appalachian region throughout the southeast United States. In this presentation, she will share some of her collection of video interviews with fiddlers from within and outside of Appalachia. The focus of the presentation will be the effects of the diaspora on the tradition, both positive and negative. The importance of events, camps or organizations that facilitate connections between the musicians in this era of increased mobility and information sharing will also be discussed. Appalachian old time music, being a culmination of many different traditional …
Many Mountains To Tour: Survey Of Cultural Icons In Tourist Sites Of The Southern Tier, Kristin M. Kant-Byers
Many Mountains To Tour: Survey Of Cultural Icons In Tourist Sites Of The Southern Tier, Kristin M. Kant-Byers
ASA Annual Conference
This paper presentation provides a survey of tourist sites in the Southern Tier of New York in an effort to document the kinds of cultural icons used to promote tourism. Meeting the challenge set by the conference theme, this presentation offers a fresh perspective of Appalachia by focusing on the emerging frontier of Appalachian Studies- that of Northern Appalachia. This part of the region, and specifically the Southern Tier of New York, has a creative and dynamic force shaping the local tourism industry. It is, subsequently, shaping local economies and politics, as well as representations of local communities. Sponsored by …
Miners And Mentors: Memory And Experiences In Coal Camp Schools In Appalachia, Harley D. Walden
Miners And Mentors: Memory And Experiences In Coal Camp Schools In Appalachia, Harley D. Walden
ASA Annual Conference
Appalachian educational history is as diverse as its mountains and music. As the number of the living students and teachers who taught and learned in coal camp schools dwindle over the years, their memories and experiences will also fade with them, if not preserved for future generations. I interviewed my grandmother, who taught in a small, rural two-room schoolhouse during the 1947-1948 school year in order to acquire the perspective from a former teacher who taught in a learning environment similar to that of a coal camp school. I also interviewed Dr. Stan Maynard, who attended two coal camp schools …
Topophilia Or Topophobia? Environment And Health In West Virginia, Brian A. Hoey
Topophilia Or Topophobia? Environment And Health In West Virginia, Brian A. Hoey
ASA Annual Conference
This paper explores existential tension between two radically opposed experiences of environment where West Virginia stands as a landscape that simultaneously promotes attachment and alienation. We may think of different locales as on a continuum from the potentially therapeutic to essentially pathogenic. What has been called a therapeutic landscape necessarily represents only one possible dimension of our relationship with place or, in this case, what geographer Yi-fu Tuan referred to as topophilia as the basis for positive affective attachment between person and place born of comfort and subjective well-being. A landscape of fear—captured in Tuan’s topophobia—establishes an essentially negative, or …
