In 1.848 Leszczyc-Suminski reported the appearance of sporophyte tissue element in a fern gametophyte. He observed tracheids near the apical notch of a prothallium of Pteris sulcata L. Wigand (1849) described an outgrowth from the apical notch of a fern prothallium. This was no doubt the development of an apogamous embryo. However, due to the uncertainty regarding the purity of some of his cultures, this development cannot be referred to any particular fern.

This peculiarity is characterized by white, brown, and corn-colored opaque areas of enamel surrounded by apparently normal enamel. The history of a pregnancy diagnosis is an old one. In the report of Dr. S. Ashheim is a note which bears this out. The women of ancient Egypt used a rather crude method. Whether it was an efficient test the records do not state. Considering the fact that pregnancy and germination and growth are correlative, these women of the Nile probably were not so far wrong theoretically, whatever the practical results may have been.
