Beyond The Dichotomy: Six Religious Views Of Homosexuality, Dawne Moon Jan 2014

Beyond The Dichotomy: Six Religious Views Of Homosexuality, Dawne Moon

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Using published theological and scholarly evidence, this article disrupts the stereotypical “born gay”/“sinful choice” dichotomy widely assumed to characterize religious views of homosexuality in the United States. It argues that we need to keep moral questions separate from questions about the fixity or fluidity of sexual orientation. Rather than two, American Christian and Jewish views of homosexuality can been seen on a range from the “God Hates Fags” view through “Love the Sinner, Hate the Sin,” “We Don’t Talk About That,” “They Can’t Help It,” “God’s Good Gift,” and a queer-theological view of the “Godly Calling.”

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which nurses practicing in a pediatric hospital encounter verbal abuse by patients and families and their reactions to this abuse.

Background: Verbal abuse, the most common type of workplace violence against nurses results in declining morale and job satisfaction, and can negatively impact nurse turnover and quality of patient care.

Methods: The study employed a concurrent triangulation strategy using mixed methods. The 162 nurses who volunteered completed a 3-part questionnaire, and a subgroup participated in one of three focus groups.

Results: Eighty-two percent of subjects reported verbal abuse …

Redemption From The Inside-Out: The Power Of Faith-Based Programming, Barbara H. Zaitzow, Richard S. Jones

Prisons are tense, cheerless, and often degrading places in which all inmates struggle to maintain their equilibrium despite violence, exploitation, lack of privacy, stringent limitations on family and community contacts, and a paucity of opportunities for meaningful education, work, or other productive activities. As a general matter, prisoners come to see prison as their home and try to make the most of the limited resources available in prison; they establish daily routines that allow them to find meaning and purpose in their prison lives, lives that might otherwise seem empty and hopeless. The resilience shown by prisoners should not be …

An Exploration Of Alternative Means Of Financial Sustainability For The Church In Tanzania, East Africa: A Donor And Donee Perspective, Juvenalis Baltazar Asantemungu Apr 2011

An Exploration Of Alternative Means Of Financial Sustainability For The Church In Tanzania, East Africa: A Donor And Donee Perspective, Juvenalis Baltazar Asantemungu

Dissertations (1934 -)

This academic enterprise is a result of careful research and detailed work that was done for the benefit of the Church in Tanzania in particular but with general implications to the Church in Africa and the Church Universal. According to Kalilombe (2002), "Self-reliance of the local Church in Africa remains a crucial subject matter" (p.2). The Catholic Church in Tanzania, as is true in most of other Churches in Sub-Saharan Africa, has traditionally been dependent to some extent on financial gifts and foreign aid (donations). However, as the financial needs of the rapidly growing dioceses are increasing, subsidies and donations …

Intersex And Imago: Sex, Gender, And Sexuality In Postmodern Theological Anthropology, Megan K. Defranza Apr 2011

Intersex And Imago: Sex, Gender, And Sexuality In Postmodern Theological Anthropology, Megan K. Defranza

Dissertations (1934 -)

Christian theologians regularly assume a binary model of human sex differentiation based on the creation narratives found in Genesis. Recent work in theological anthropology has grounded theological concepts such as the social view of the image of God, human personhood, and human relationality on the creation of humans as male and female in heterosexual marital relation. While these anthropologies have merit--particularly in correcting older versions of the imago Dei which privileged the male-- they are inadequate for addressing the phenomena of intersex.

Intersex is a broad term used for persons whose bodies display some physical characteristics of both sexes--historically labeled …

A Narrative Analysis Of Perinatal Hospice Stories, Anthony Adams Lathrop Apr 2010

A Narrative Analysis Of Perinatal Hospice Stories, Anthony Adams Lathrop

Dissertations (1934 -)

Technology has made it possible to detect abnormal fetal conditions, including lethal anomalies, prior to birth. Women who receive lethal fetal diagnoses during pregnancy face the decision whether to continue or terminate their affected pregnancies. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe women's experiences after the continuation of pregnancies affected by lethal fetal diagnoses and the subsequent loss of their infants.

A qualitative, descriptive methodology was chosen for this exploratory study. Fifteen women participants who learned during their pregnancies of lethal fetal diagnoses and chose to continue their pregnancies were recruited from perinatal hospice (PH) support organizations …

The Enochic Watchers' Template And The Gospel Of Matthew, Amy Elizabeth Richter Apr 2010

The Enochic Watchers' Template And The Gospel Of Matthew, Amy Elizabeth Richter

Dissertations (1934 -)

The writer of the Gospel according to Matthew was familiar with themes and traditions about the antediluvian patriarch Enoch, including the story of the fall of the watchers, and shows that Jesus brings about the eschatological repair of the consequences of the watchers' fall. In Matthew's Gospel, the foreshadowing of repair and then the repair itself are seen in the evangelist's genealogy and infancy narrative, the focus of this dissertation.

According to the Enochic watchers' template, evil came into the world when the watchers transgressed their heavenly boundary to engage in illicit sexual contact with women and teach them illicit …

What Is ‘Catholic Enlightenment’?, Ulrich Lehner Feb 2010

What Is ‘Catholic Enlightenment’?, Ulrich Lehner

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Recent research has demonstrated not only the existence of a variety of Enlightenments, but also the importance of the religious aspect to this worldwide process. In particular, special interest has been paid to the long-neglected Catholic Enlightenment, which entailed many strands of thought by Catholic intellectuals and political leaders who attempted to renew and reform Catholicism from the middle of the 18th to the early 19th century. This renewal was an apologetic endeavor designed to defend the essential dogmas of Catholic Christianity by explaining their rationality in modern terminology and by reconciling Catholicism with modern culture. The Catholic Enlightenment was …

Acculturation And Depression Among Hispanics: The Moderating Effect Of Intercultural Competence, Lucas Torres, David Rollock Jan 2007

Acculturation And Depression Among Hispanics: The Moderating Effect Of Intercultural Competence, Lucas Torres, David Rollock

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

In the present study the authors examined the relative contributions of typical acculturation indicators, general coping, and intercultural competence in predicting depression among 96 Hispanic adults. The results indicated that intercultural competence served to moderate the relationship between acculturation and depression. The combination of high acculturation and high intercultural competence was associated with fewer symptoms. General coping accounted for significant amounts of variance in predicting depression, over and above traditional acculturation variables alone, suggesting that an active problem-solving style was associated with a healthier outcome. The findings are discussed within the context of integrating competence-based variables into psychological conceptualizations of …

Cognitive Spirituality And Hope In Catholic High School Students, Bruce B. Frey, Jennifer Teramoto Pedrotti, Lisa M. Edwards, Diane M. Mcdermott

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

This study explores the validity of a construct of cognitive spirituality as measured by a recent measure, the Spirituality Index of Well-Being, in a sample of Catholic high school students. Spirituality on this scale is conceptualized as a composite of life scheme (having meaning in one's life) and generalized self-efficacy. Construct-based validity evidence was produced through factor analysis and examination of correlations between the spirituality scale and subscale scores with scale and subscale scores on the Children's Hope Scale, a well-being indicator previously used for this population. In addition, differences between male and female students were found, with …
