Constructing The Secular: The Changing Relationship Between Religion And Politics In The Tibetan Exile Community, Emmi Okada
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
This paper aims to investigate the construction of secularity in the Tibetan exile society by examining the English-language discourse on the unfolding process of secularization, as well as the emergence of an ideology of secularism and secular democracy. I consider secularization in the exile polity to be occurring in two respects. The first is in the form of differentiation between the political and religious institutions, which culminated in the Dalai Lama’s complete devolution of his political powers to the elected government in 2011. The second is in the sense of the transfer and transition of political legitimacy from the Dalai …
Knowing King Gésar Between Buddhist Monastery And Socialist Academy, Or The Practices Of Secularism In Inner Asia, Matthew W. King
Knowing King Gésar Between Buddhist Monastery And Socialist Academy, Or The Practices Of Secularism In Inner Asia, Matthew W. King
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
This argues that selective memories of imperial-era Buddhist knowledge practices helped Soviet-era scholars localize secularist ideology, knowledge practices, and historical models in post-imperial Mongolia. At the root of one such memory was the eighteenth century eastern Tibetan Buddhist polymath Sumpa Khenpo, who differentiated between historical, legendary and enlightened King Gésars in a letter correspondence with the Sixth Panchen Lama, Palden Yéshé (1738-1780). To the delight of his later Soviet and socialist Mongolian readers, Sumpa Khenpo drew his conclusions about the historical Gésar based on observable evidence instead of scriptural authority. On the basis of a close examination of the contents …
Controversy Over Buddhist Ethical Reform: A Secular Critique Of Clerical Authority In The Tibetan Blogosphere, Holly Gayley
Controversy Over Buddhist Ethical Reform: A Secular Critique Of Clerical Authority In The Tibetan Blogosphere, Holly Gayley
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
This article explores the online debate in the Tibetan-language blogosphere over a burgeoning ethical reform movement. Annually, whole villages and clans in nomadic areas along the eastern reaches of the Tibetan plateau are committing to a newly formulated set of ten Buddhist virtues that include vows not to sell yaks for slaughter, not to fight with weapons, and not to drink, smoke, or gamble. Spearheaded by Khenpo Tsultrim Lodrö and cleric-scholars at Larung Buddhist Academy concerned with the erosion of social values in the face of state modernization policies, novel vow ceremonies have generated a new level of commitment to …
Introduction | Theorizing The Secular In Tibetan Cultural Worlds, Holly Gayley, Nicole Willock
Introduction | Theorizing The Secular In Tibetan Cultural Worlds, Holly Gayley, Nicole Willock
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
This special issue on ‘The Secular in Tibetan Cultural Worlds’ originated in a panel on The Secular in Tibet and Mongolia at the Thirteenth Seminar of the International Association of Tibetan Studies held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia in 2013. To contextualize the contributions to this issue, spanning diverse temporal and geographic contexts, this Introduction raises theoretical concerns and discusses contested terminology regarding ‘religion’ and the ‘secular’ in Tibetan discourse. The authors situate local articulations of the secular within broader academic discussions of the varieties of Asian secularisms and offer a key intervention to complicate the secularization thesis and prevailing views of …
The Persistence Of Gnosticism: Credit And The Apocalypse, Molly A. Wallace
The Persistence Of Gnosticism: Credit And The Apocalypse, Molly A. Wallace
Religious Studies Honors Projects
This paper follows Hans Blumenberg’s argument that gnosticism persisted throughout the Middle Ages due to Augustine of Hippo’s accidental incorporation of gnostic eschatology into his theory of voluntas. Gnosticism is a radically dualist structure originating in Late Antiquity that splits the cosmos between corrupt matter and a divine spirit. I take issue with Blumenberg’s assertion that modernity has truly rid itself of a concern with spirit, or transcendence. By doing so, I am able to take his argument to its logical conclusion: gnosticism persists today through the capitalist descendent of spirit—value. Moreover, I argue that the …

"As Our Ancestors Once Lived": Representation, Performance, And Constructing A National Culture Amongst The Nagas Of India., Arkotong Longkumer
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
This paper focuses on how a national culture emerges by examining the Nagas of India. To appreciate this process, the confluence of British colonialism, the postcolonial situation, and contemporary performance of Naga identity (visible in the Hornbill Festival) must be analyzed. I will argue that the colonial era representation of ‘primitivism’ of the Nagas continues into postcolonial narratives of ‘imperialist nostalgia’ disseminated primarily through travel, popular media and museum exhibitions. I will argue that the Nagas are not simply passive onlookers, but active participants in this enterprise through the strategic articulation of a distinct Naga national image. I will demonstrate …
Constructing The New Nepal: Religious Billboards In Nepal’S Second People’S Movement, Michael Baltutis
Constructing The New Nepal: Religious Billboards In Nepal’S Second People’S Movement, Michael Baltutis
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
Accompanying King Gyanendra’s February First, 2005, efforts to consolidate his loosening grip on national power, the royal Nepali government raised a series of highly visible billboards throughout the cities of the Kathmandu Valley. A small subset of these boards were explicitly religious, encouraging Nepal’s citizens to perform their patriotic bhakti (devotion), karma (action), and dharma (duty). This rhetorical support of a ‘universal’ Hinduism contradicted the inclusivism that was widely regarded as part and parcel of the ‘new Nepal’ and resulted in a contradictory vision of the same: a modern secular nation composed of citizens, rather than of subservient subjects, unified …

Hic Est Uxor Mihei: How Roman Funerary Portraits Carve The Ideal Freedwoman, Nora Kassner
Hic Est Uxor Mihei: How Roman Funerary Portraits Carve The Ideal Freedwoman, Nora Kassner
Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Honors Projects
This paper examines the depiction of Roman freedwomen (former slaves) in thirty-five late Republican and Augustan funerary portraits. Extant portraits utilize a complex visual and written vocabulary to reveal a wide variety of views of freedwomen’s status and agency. This paper relies upon analyses of the cultural climates of the late Republican and Augustan period, careful interrogation of the material evidence through the lens of both post-structuralist and affective theory, and the use of case studies. Ultimately, it argues that funerary portraits create diverse representations of the ideal freedwoman that become part of an ongoing cultural dialogue concerning the place …
How Much Of The Heterogeneity In Returns To College Major Can Be Explained By Institution Type?, Olivia Warner
How Much Of The Heterogeneity In Returns To College Major Can Be Explained By Institution Type?, Olivia Warner
Economics Honors Projects
Rising post-secondary education costs have increased the importance of undergraduate students’ institution and field of study choices, two aspects of higher education that affect post-graduation earnings. This paper analyzes the impact of the interaction between college major and attending a liberal arts institution on post-graduation wages. Using data on Minnesota bachelor’s degree completers who were employed at Minnesota firms 6 to 18 months after graduation, I find robust evidence that the interaction is significant. Liberal arts students are disadvantaged when other institutional and individual characteristics are controlled for, but they may be relatively less so depending on field of study.
South Asian Muslim Health Outcomes In Great Britain: The National Health Service And The British National Imaginary, Marni P. Schreiber
South Asian Muslim Health Outcomes In Great Britain: The National Health Service And The British National Imaginary, Marni P. Schreiber
Religious Studies Honors Projects
Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) ensures equal access care to all British residents. Health outcomes, nonetheless, vary across socioeconomic class, education level, and geographic location, a phenomenon particularly affecting Britain’s South Asian Muslim communities. This paper will contextualize the NHS within the British national imaginary and analyze discursive, social, and economic variables influencing Pakistani and Bangladeshi poor health. I will integrate religious-based analysis into healthcare studies and question if health outcomes act as a marker of distinction between minority and majority populations. Though Muslim organizations, the NHS, the Department of Health, and government multicultural policies hope to reverse health disparities, …

Roosevelt, Boy Scouts, And The Formation Of Muscular Christian Character, Gordon J. Christen
Roosevelt, Boy Scouts, And The Formation Of Muscular Christian Character, Gordon J. Christen
Religious Studies Honors Projects
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, many prominent Christians and political leaders saw a degenerative influence in industrializing America. For them, urban culture had eroded gender roles, personal strength, and moral fiber. So-called “Muscular Christians” prescribed physical exertion and wilderness experience to cure these ills. I argue that these values were embodied in idealized characters such as Theodore Roosevelt, Jesus, and the Boy Scout to give a form to cultural remedies. In the process, they became the terms upon which proper Americanism, and proper Christianity, were constructed.
