How Secular Should Democracy Be? A Cross-Disciplinary Study Of Catholicism And Islam In Promoting Public Reason, David Ingram, David Ingram
How Secular Should Democracy Be? A Cross-Disciplinary Study Of Catholicism And Islam In Promoting Public Reason, David Ingram, David Ingram
Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works
I argue that the same factors (strategic and principled) that motivated Catholicism to champion liberal democracy are the same that motivate 21st Century Islam to do the same. I defend this claim by linking political liberalism to democratic secularism. Distinguishing institutional, political, and epistemic dimensions of democratic secularism, I show that moderate forms of political and epistemic secularism are most conducive to fostering the kind of public reasoning essential to democratic legitimacy. This demonstration draws upon the ambivalent impact of Indonesia’s Islamic parties in advancing universal social justice aims as against more sectarian policies.

Teaching, Learning, And Leading With Schools And Communities: One Urban University Re-Envisions Teacher Preparation For The Next Generation, Ann Marie Ryan, David C. Ensminger, Amy J. Heineke, Adam S. Kennedy, David P. Prasse, Lara K. Smetana
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
Ultimately, the national goals of improving learning outcomes for all students and reducing, if not eliminating, the achievement gap require a teaching corps that brings knowledge and professional competencies to have positive impacts on diverse learners in diverse settings (Gándara & Maxwell-Jolly, 2006). As central actors in schools, teachers have the greatest impact on student achievement (Cochran-Smith & Fries, 2005). Nevertheless, due to varied challenges of preparing high-quality teachers within the context of traditional schools of education, preparation programs have yet to consistently and comprehensively produce teachers who accomplish these outcomes (Ball & Forzani, 2009; Larabee, 2004, 2010). While substantive …

Epigenetics And Social Context: Implications For Disparity In Cardiovascular Disease, Karen L. Saban, Herbert L. Matthews, Holli A. Devon, Linda W. Janusek
Nursing: School of Nursing Faculty Publications and Other Works
BACKGROUND:
Although it is well established that African Americans (AA) experience greater social stressors than non-Hispanic Whites (NHW), the extent to which early life adversity and cumulative social stressors such as perceived discrimination, neighborhood violence, subjective social status, and socioeconomic status contribute to disparity in coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke between AA and NHW are not well understood.
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this paper is to propose a conceptual model based upon McEwen’s Allostatic Load Model suggesting how the relationships among social context, early life adversity, psychological stress, inflammation, adaptation, and epigenetic signature may contribute to the development of …

The Physics Of Music Course As An Introduction To Science, Gordon Ramsey
Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Our Physics of Music course is an integration of physics and music. We start with the mathematical structure of music, including scales, harmonies and chords. We discuss musical styles and how they differ. After an introduction of physics concepts, including waves, resonances, forces, energy and fluid flow, the physical structure of instruments in the various groups are studied. Connection is made of the instruments and how they reproduce the mathematical nature of music. Finally, venue acoustics are investigated. The course integrates different styles of learning by integrating different learning modes. The classes include lecture/demonstration, discussion, in-class laboratories and a final individual …

Understanding The Yelp Review Filter: An Exploratory Study, David Kamerer
Understanding The Yelp Review Filter: An Exploratory Study, David Kamerer
School of Communication: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Reviews on Yelp.com can be an important factor in driving customers to a business. However, many business owners have expressed concern with Yelp’s review filtering system, which was created to flag low–quality or fake reviews. This study performs a content analysis of a subset of Yelp restaurant and religious organization reviews, visible and filtered, exploring signals from the reviews or the reviewers that might explain the filtering process. The study finds that factors intrinsic to the review itself are not related to filtering, but factors related to the reviewer are strong predictors. The Yelp system is much more likely to …
The Land Of Opportunity Doesn't Apply To Everyone: The Immigrant Experience, Race, And Asian American Career Choices, Oiyan Poon
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
Despite their popular portrayal as high achieving and structurally incorporated, race continues to shape the career choices of Asian American college students. As second-generation Americans, Asian Americans negotiate a constellation of factors when deciding their career choices, most notably, pressures from immigrant parents, awareness of labor market discrimination, fear of being tokenized in particular occupational fields, and influences from peer networks. These findings help elucidate how race and the social context of immigrant adaptation can affect the occupational trajectories of Asian Americans and other children of immigrants in the United States, regardless of their educational achievement and socioeconomic status.
Neural Correlates Of Suspiciousness And Interactions With Anxiety During Emotional And Neutral Word Processing, Joscelyn E. Fisher, George A. Miller, Sarah M. Sass, Rebecca L. Silton
Neural Correlates Of Suspiciousness And Interactions With Anxiety During Emotional And Neutral Word Processing, Joscelyn E. Fisher, George A. Miller, Sarah M. Sass, Rebecca L. Silton
Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Suspiciousness is usually classified as a symptom of psychosis, but it also occurs in depression and anxiety disorders. Though how suspiciousness overlaps with depression is not obvious, suspiciousness does seem to overlap with anxious apprehension and anxious arousal (e.g., verbal iterative processes and vigilance about environmental threat). However, suspiciousness also has unique characteristics (e.g., concern about harm from others and vigilance about social threat). Given that both anxiety and suspiciousness have been associated with abnormalities in emotion processing, it is unclear whether it is the unique characteristics of suspiciousness or the overlap with anxiety that drive abnormalities in emotion processing. …

Supporting Collaborative Efforts In Implementing Evidence-Based Reading Interventions: The Role Of Online Databases, Gina Coffee, Adam S. Kennedy, Markeda L. Newell
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
The purpose of this article is to provide an explanation of how effective reading interventions are identified. Through a review of the National Reading Panel’s general findings, along with a review of systems currently used to evaluate and disseminate specific reading interventions, a discussion of what works in reading is presented. The Evidence-Based Intervention (EBI) Network is presented as a resource for facilitating collaboration across disciplines. Finally, a framework to guide collaborating professionals in the implementation of evidence-based reading interventions is proposed.
N-Tuple S&P 500 Index Patterns Across Decades, 1950s To 2011, Anastasios G. Malliaris, Mary Malliaris
N-Tuple S&P 500 Index Patterns Across Decades, 1950s To 2011, Anastasios G. Malliaris, Mary Malliaris
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Numerous studies have analyzed the movements of the S&P 500 Index using several methodologies such as technical analysis, econometric modeling, time series techniques and theories from behavioral finance. In this paper we take a novel approach. We use daily closing prices for the S&P 500 Index for a very long period from 1/3/1950 to 7/19/2011 for a total of 15,488 daily observations. We then investigate the up and down movements and their combinations for 1 to 7 days giving us multiple possible patterns for over six decades. Some patterns of each type are more dominant across decades. We split the …
Dialoging About English Learners: Preparing Teachers Through Culturally Relevant Literature Circles., Amy J. Heineke
Dialoging About English Learners: Preparing Teachers Through Culturally Relevant Literature Circles., Amy J. Heineke
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
In this paper, I describe how culturally relevant children’s literature allowed teachers and teacher candidates to explore the lived realities of diverse students. Through my qualitative investigation of 23 literature discussions of undergraduate and graduate students across five academic semesters, I found that texts written by culturally and linguistically diverse authors gave participants new ways to articulate ideas and beliefs about English learners. I discovered specific factors that opened or closed opportunities for dialog and learning in literature circles, including implementation of reader response strategies and various participant groupings. Results hold implications for preparing and supporting teachers to recognize and …
The Rational Agent Or The Relational Agent: Moving From Freedom To Justice In Migration Systems Ethics, Tisha Rajendra
The Rational Agent Or The Relational Agent: Moving From Freedom To Justice In Migration Systems Ethics, Tisha Rajendra
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Most accounts of immigration ethics implicitly rely upon neoclassical migration theory, which understands migration as the result of poverty and unemployment in sending countries. This paper argues that neoclassical migration theory assumes an account of the human person as solely an autonomous rational agent which then leads to ethics of migration which overemphasize freedom and self-determination. This tendency to assume that migration works as neoclassical migration theory describes is shared by political philosophers, such as Joseph Carens, Michael Walzer, and David Miller. This paper argues that all three philosophers incorrectly frame migration as a contest between the freedom of the …
The Promise Of Healthcare Reform In Transforming Services For Jail Detainees, Maureen Mcdonnell, Laura Brookes, Arthur J. Lurigio
The Promise Of Healthcare Reform In Transforming Services For Jail Detainees, Maureen Mcdonnell, Laura Brookes, Arthur J. Lurigio
Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Chronic behavioral health conditions, such as psychiatric and substance use disorders, affect at least half of all arrestees, with two-thirds suffering from at least one chronic medical disorder. These conditions contribute to their criminal behaviors and propensities to recycle through the criminal justice system (Binswanger et al. Journal of Urban Health 89:183-190, 2012). Despite their limited resources, jails have nonetheless become de facto settings for the delivery of healthcare services. With the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010, jail releasees will become eligible for government-subsidized healthcare coverage in 2014. The widespread availability of integrated healthcare services for …
Electrophysiological Evidence Of The Time Course Of Attentional Bias In Nonpatients Reporting Symptoms Of Depression With And Without Co-Occurring Anxiety, Sarah M. Sass, Wendy Heller, Joscelyn Fisher, Rebecca L. Silton
Silton
Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Anxiety is characterized by attentional biases to threat, but findings are inconsistent for depression. To address this inconsistency, the present study systematically assessed the role of co-occurring anxiety in attentional bias in depression. In addition, the role of emotional valence, arousal, and gender was explored. Ninety-two non-patients completed the Penn State Worry Questionnaire (Meyer et al., 1990; Molina and Borkovec, 1994) and portions of the Mood and Anxiety Symptom Questionnaire (Watson et al., 1995a,b). Individuals reporting high levels of depression and low levels of anxiety (depression only), high levels of depression and anxiety …

Who Are You Going To Call? Primary Care Patients’ Disclosure Decisions Regarding Direct–To–Consumer Genetic Testing, Katherine Wasson, Sara Cherny, Tonya Nashay Sanders, Nancy S. Hogan, Kathy J. Helzlsouer
Nursing: School of Nursing Faculty Publications and Other Works
Background: Direct–to–consumer genetic testing (DTCGT) offers risk estimates for a variety of complex diseases and conditions, yet little is known about its impact on actual users, including their decisions about sharing the information gleaned from testing. Ethical considerations include the impact of unsolicited genetic information with variable validity and clinical utility on relatives, and the possible burden to the health care system if revealed to physicians. Aims: The qualitative study explored primary care patients’ views, attitudes, and decision making considerations regarding DTCGT. This article focuses on the disclosure decisions participants made regarding participation, testing, and results of DTCGT, a topic …
The Interplay Between Child And Maternal Health: Reciprocal Relationships And Cumulative Disadvantage During Childhood And Adolescence, Dana Garbarski
The Interplay Between Child And Maternal Health: Reciprocal Relationships And Cumulative Disadvantage During Childhood And Adolescence, Dana Garbarski
Sociology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
While many studies use parental socioeconomic status and health to predict children’s health, this study examines the interplay over time between child and maternal health across childhood and adolescence. Using data from women in the National Longitudinal Study of Youth 1979 cohort and their children (N = 2,225), autoregressive cross-lagged models demonstrate a reciprocal relationship between child activity limitations and maternal health limitations in direct effects of child activity limitations on maternal health limitations two years later and vice versa—net of a range of health-relevant time-varying and time-invariant covariates. Furthermore, there are indirect effects of child activity limitations on …

Finding Joy In The Past, Present, And Future: The Relationship Between Type A Behavior And Savoring Beliefs Among College Undergraduates, Fred B. Bryant, Paul R. Yarnold
Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Prior research investigating savoring behaviors and Type A behavior (TAB) found that extreme Type A undergraduates are most likely to score in the highest quintile on self-congratulation, and in the lowest three quintiles on memory-building. This study used scores on past-, present-, and future-focused savoring beliefs to discriminate 117 extreme Type A versus 131 extreme Type B college undergraduates. Univariate statistical analysis conducted via UniODA revealed that compared to extreme Type Bs, extreme Type As had significantly greater reminiscence (past focus) and anticipation (future focus) scores, and also had marginally greater savor the moment (present focus) scores. Multivariate analysis via …
The Problem Of Having Both A Body And A Name In The Work Of Jean-Luc Marion: Names, Fathers And The Hopeful Possibilities Of A Queer Phenomenology, Colby Dickinson
The Problem Of Having Both A Body And A Name In The Work Of Jean-Luc Marion: Names, Fathers And The Hopeful Possibilities Of A Queer Phenomenology, Colby Dickinson
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
In this essay, and following upon both Jacques Lacan’s and Jacques Derrida’s personal struggles with fatherhood and the naming of their children, I take up what I consider to be Jean-Luc Marion’s failure to deal with the embodiment of fatherhood through an examination of patriarchal signification, or, specifically, the naming of one’s children after the father—at least insofar as Marion’s brief analysis of this symbolic act points toward his failure to think through the various potential and lived embodiments of the father. I aim to illuminate how his efforts to continue this naming of the child with the father’s name …

The Profanation Of Revelation: On Language And Immanence In The Work Of Giorgio Agamben, Colby Dickinson
The Profanation Of Revelation: On Language And Immanence In The Work Of Giorgio Agamben, Colby Dickinson
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This essay seeks to articulate the many implications which Giorgio Agamben’s work holds for theology. It aims therefore to examine his (re)conceptualizations of language, in light of particular historical glosses on the ‘name of God’ and the nature of the ‘mystical’, as well as to highlight the political task of profanation, one of his most central concepts, in relation to the logos said to embody humanity’s ‘religious’ quest to find its Voice. As such, we see how he challenges those standard (ontotheological) notions of transcendence which have been consistently aligned with various historical forms of sovereignty. In addition, I intend …

Are The Only True Atheists Actually Theologians?, Colby Dickinson
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Contemporary continental European philosophy circulates around particular apocalyptic themes, offering new insights and suggestive proposals for theology to think through the implications of this often most difficult of religious subjects. As such philosophies manoeuvre to define apocalyptic through its return to questions of antinomian thought, of the 'interruption' of normative religious imagery, and of the negation of our most cherished theological representations (including our representations of God and the Law), we constantly find these philosophers engaged with the most basic foundations of Western religious history. From its inception, apocalyptic has been a genre of literature, and more generally of religious …
Let’S Take This One Step At A Time: The Effect Of Presenting The Brainstorming Rules In Stages On Brainstorming Effectiveness, Cassondra Batz
Let’S Take This One Step At A Time: The Effect Of Presenting The Brainstorming Rules In Stages On Brainstorming Effectiveness, Cassondra Batz
University Libraries Undergraduate Research Paper Award
The purpose of this research is to further our understanding of the way groups work together to generate ideas while using a procedure called brainstorming. Brainstorming requires groups to follow four procedural rules while generating their ideas (Osborn 1957). However, two of theses rules seem to call for contradictory processes. One of these rules states that “free-wheeling is welcomed; the wilder the idea the better,” while another rule says to “combine and build on the ideas already generated.” The contradiction is apparent when a person notices that one rule requests a group to generate ideas that are different from previously …

Chasing The Writer, Joyce Wexler
English: Faculty Publications and Other Works
"Why does the writing make us chase the writer?" Julian Barnes asks in Flaubert's Parrot. In the past, the answer was easy-we studied the writer to understand the writing. But Barnes suggests that now we study the writing to understand the writer. Barnes's interest in the writer marks a new direction in fiction and criticism.

Marx's Democratic Critique Of Capitalism And Its Implications For A Viable Socialism, C. David Schweickart
Marx's Democratic Critique Of Capitalism And Its Implications For A Viable Socialism, C. David Schweickart
Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This paper argues that Marx’s critique of capitalism is not, as commonly believed, a critique of the “free market.” I argue that the “market” under capitalism should be understood as a three-fold market—for goods and services, for labor and for capital. I argue that Marx’s critique is essentially a critique of the latter two markets, and not the first. Hence theoretical space opens up for “market socialism.” I proceed to elaborate briefly what specific institutions might comprise an economically viable socialism that would not be vulnerable to Marx’s critique.
