Pacts 1.0: A Crowdsourced Reporting Standard For Paleoclimate Data, Kristine Delong Oct 2019

Pacts 1.0: A Crowdsourced Reporting Standard For Paleoclimate Data, Kristine Delong

Faculty Publications

The progress of science is tied to the standardization of measurements, instruments, and data. This is especially true in the Big Data age, where analyzing large data volumes critically hinges on the data being standardized. Accordingly, the lack of community-sanctioned data standards in paleoclimatology has largely precluded the benefits of Big Data advances in the field. Building upon recent efforts to standardize the format and terminology of paleoclimate data, this article describes the Paleoclimate Community reporTing Standard (PaCTS), a crowdsourced reporting standard for such data. PaCTS captures which information should be included when reporting paleoclimate data, with the goal of …

Hinge Region In Dna Packaging Terminase Pul15 Of Herpes Simplex Virus: A Potential Allosteric Target For Antiviral Drugs, Lana F. Thaljeh, J. Ainsley Rothschild, Misagh Naderi, Lyndon M. Coghill, Jeremy M. Brown, Michal Brylinski

Faculty Publications

Approximately 80% of adults are infected with a member of the herpesviridae family. Herpesviruses establish life-long latent infections within neurons, which may reactivate into lytic infections due to stress or immune suppression. There are nine human herpesviruses (HHV) posing health concerns from benign conditions to life threatening encephalitis, including cancers associated with viral infections. The current treatment options for most HHV conditions mainly include several nucleoside and nucleotide analogs targeting viral DNA polymerase. Although these drugs help manage infections, their common mechanism of action may lead to the development of drug resistance, which is particularly devastating in immunocompromised patients. Therefore, …

The recent discovery of significant brown fat depots in adult humans has revived discussion of exploiting brown fat thermogenesis in the control of energy balance and body weight. The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) has a key role in the activation of brown fat and functional mapping of its components will be crucial for the development of specific neuromodulation techniques. The mouse is an important species used for molecular genetic modulations, but its small size is …

Quantifying The Magic Of Quantum Channels, Xin Wang, Mark M. Wilde, Yuan Su Oct 2019

Quantifying The Magic Of Quantum Channels, Xin Wang, Mark M. Wilde, Yuan Su

Faculty Publications

To achieve universal quantum computation via general fault-tolerant schemes, stabilizer operations must be supplemented with other non-stabilizer quantum resources. Motivated by this necessity, we develop a resource theory for magic quantum channels to characterize and quantify the quantum 'magic' or non-stabilizerness of noisy quantum circuits. For qudit quantum computing with odd dimension d, it is known that quantum states with non-negative Wigner function can be efficiently simulated classically. First, inspired by this observation, we introduce a resource theory based on completely positive-Wigner-preserving quantum operations as free operations, and we show that they can be efficiently simulated via a classical algorithm. …

When formed through dynamical interactions, stellar-mass binary black holes (BBHs) may retain eccentric orbits (e > 0.1 at 10 Hz) detectable by ground-based gravitational-wave detectors. Eccentricity can therefore be used to differentiate dynamically formed binaries from isolated BBH mergers. Current template-based gravitational-wave searches do not use waveform models associated with eccentric orbits, rendering the search less efficient for eccentric binary systems. Here we present the results of a search for BBH mergers that inspiral in eccentric orbits using data from the first and second observing runs (O1 and O2) of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. We carried out the search with …

While most bacterial and archaeal taxa living in surface soils remain undescribed, this problem is exacerbated in deeper soils, owing to the unique oligotrophic conditions found in the subsurface. Additionally, previous studies of soil microbiomes have focused almost exclusively on surface soils, even though the microbes living in deeper soils also play critical roles in a wide range of biogeochemical processes. We examined soils collected from 20 distinct profiles across the United States to characterize the bacterial and archaeal communities that live in subsurface soils and to determine whether there are consistent changes in soil microbial communities with depth across …

The parental allele specificity of mammalian imprinted genes has been evolutionarily well conserved, although its functional constraints and associated mechanisms are not fully understood. In the current study, we generated a mouse mutant with switched active alleles driving the switch from paternal-to-maternal expression for Peg3 and the maternal-to-paternal expression for Zim1. The expression levels of Peg3 and Zim1, but not …

Virus-related degeneration constrains production of quality sweet potato seed, especially under open field conditions. Once in the open, virus-indexed seed is prone to virus infection leading to decline in performance. Insect-proof net tunnels have been proven to reduce virus infection under researcher management. However, their effectiveness under farmer-multiplier management is not known. This study investigated the ability of net tunnels to reduce degeneration in sweet potato under farmer-multiplier management. Infection and degeneration were assessed for two cultivars, Kabode and Polista, grown in net tunnels and open fields at two sites with varying virus pressures. There was zero virus incidence at …

Fecundity Of The Parental And Fitness Of The F1 Populations Of Corn Earworm From Refuge Ears Of Seed Blend Plantings With Genuity® Smartstax™ Maize, Jianguo Guo, Fei Yang, Sebe Brown, David Kern, Graham P. Head, Paula A. Price, Ying Niu, Fangneng Huang

Faculty Publications

Seed blend, also called ‘refuge-in-the-bag (RIB)’, has been used as a refuge strategy to generate susceptible insect populations for Bt maize resistance management in the U.S. Corn Belt. A major concern related to the use of RIB is the cross-pollination of maize plants that cause Bt protein expression in the kernels of refuge ears. Bt protein expression in the refuge ears can negatively affect the insect populations on refuge plants, especially for ear feeders such as the corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie). The current study investigated the reproduction of three populations of H. zea collected from a pure stand of …

Nature Of The Crust In The Northern Gulf Of California And Salton Trough, Patricia Persaud Oct 2019

Nature Of The Crust In The Northern Gulf Of California And Salton Trough, Patricia Persaud

Faculty Publications

In the southern Gulf of California, the generation of new oceanic crust has resulted in linear magnetic anomalies and seafloor bathymetry that are characteristic of active seafloor-spreading systems. In the northern Gulf of California and the onshore (southeastern California, USA) Salton Trough region, a thick sedimentary package overlies the crystalline crust, masking its nature, and linear magnetic anomalies are absent. We use potential-field data and a geotherm analysis to constrain the composition of the crust (oceanic or continental) and develop a conceptual model for rifting. Gravity anomalies in the northern Gulf of California and Salton Trough are best fit with …

The Impact Of Hurricane Harvey On Pavement Structures In The South East Texas And South West Louisiana, Stefan Romanoschi

Data

Corresponding data set for Tran-SET Project No. 18PUTA02. Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:

"This study developed a methodology to estimate the damage caused by flooding, such that caused by Hurricane Harvey, on a road or street network. The flooded street or pavement sections are identified using GIS flood maps with street GIS maps used for pavement management systems (PMS) by cities or state authorities. Then the damage caused by flooding directly through the increase moisture in foundation layers or indirectly due to the increase heavy traffic during the relief effort is estimated. An example Excel …

Anisotropy Of The Effective Toughness Of Layered Media, S. Brach, M. Z. Hossain, B. Bourdin, K. Bhattacharya Oct 2019

Anisotropy Of The Effective Toughness Of Layered Media, S. Brach, M. Z. Hossain, B. Bourdin, K. Bhattacharya

Faculty Publications

This continues the study of the effective toughness of layered materials started in Hossain et al. (2014) and Hsueh et al. (2018), with a focus on anisotropy. We use the phase-field model and the surfing boundary condition to propagate a crack macroscopically at various angles to the layers. We study two idealized situations, the first where the elastic modulus is uniform while the toughness alternates and a second where the toughness is uniform and the elastic modulus alternates. We find that in the first case of toughness heterogeneity the effective toughness displays ‘anomalous isotropy’ in that it is independent of …

A Geometric Analogue Of A Conjecture Of Gross And Reeder, Masoud Kamgarpour, Daniel S. Sage Oct 2019

A Geometric Analogue Of A Conjecture Of Gross And Reeder, Masoud Kamgarpour, Daniel S. Sage

Faculty Publications

Let G be a simple complex algebraic group. We prove that the irregularity of the adjoint connection of an irregular flat G-bundle on the formal punctured disk is always greater than or equal to the rank of G. This can be considered as a geometric analogue of a conjecture of Gross and Reeder. We will also show that the irregular connections with minimum adjoint irregularity are precisely the (formal) Frenkel-Gross connections. As a corollary, we establish the de Rham analogue of a conjecture of Heinloth, Nĝo, and Yun for G = SLn.

Higher Gauss Sums Of Modular Categories, Siu Hung Ng, Andrew Schopieray, Yilong Wang

Faculty Publications

The definitions of the nth Gauss sum and the associated nth central charge are introduced for premodular categories C and n∈ Z. We first derive an expression of the nth Gauss sum of a modular category C, for any integer n coprime to the order of the T-matrix of C, in terms of the first Gauss sum, the global dimension, the twist and their Galois conjugates. As a consequence, we show for these n, the higher Gauss sums are d-numbers and the associated central charges are roots of unity. In particular, if C is the Drinfeld center of a spherical …

Reduction Of Structural Damage From The Thermal Expansion Of Concrete Using Multifunctional Materials, Darren Hartl, Mirmilad Mirsayar Oct 2019

Reduction Of Structural Damage From The Thermal Expansion Of Concrete Using Multifunctional Materials, Darren Hartl, Mirmilad Mirsayar

Data

Corresponding data set for Tran-SET Project No. 18STTAM01. Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:

"This study leveraged past successes in the analysis and design of shape memory alloy (SMA) components to address the issue of thermal expansion in concrete structures. Since the SMA used in the current work is relatively cheaper than other common SMAs (less than $50/lb compared to NiTi which is $200/lb due to difficulties in processing), it is anticipated that the findings of the study could be implemented in real infrastructures made of concrete, asphalt concrete, and other complex large infrastructure. Low-cost Fe-SMAs …
