Introduction To The Special Issue On English In The Southern United States: Social Factors And Language Variation, Irina Shport, Wendy Herd Jan 2020

Introduction To The Special Issue On English In The Southern United States: Social Factors And Language Variation, Irina Shport, Wendy Herd

Faculty Publications

The Southern United States have long been known for language diversity, yet linguistic research in this region has often focused on broad descriptions of characteristics of Southern American English as compared to other regional dialects of American English. Linguistic subregions in the South, however, are distinctly different from each other, and additional social variation also occurs within those subregions. Thus, the different English varieties spoken in the South cannot be collapsed under a single umbrella. Analyzing varieties of English in the Southern United States calls for a narrower approach, which will more accurately represent diverse Southern communities, their languages of …

Thermal Stability And Flame Resistance Of The Coextruded Wood-Plastic Composites Containing Talc-Filled Plastic Shells, Runzhou Huang, Xian Zhang, Zhilin Chen, Minli Wan, Qinglin Wu

Faculty Publications

Talc is a popular filler for the fabrication of plastic composites. The presence of talc helps improve mechanical, thermal, and flame resistance properties of the composite. In this work, we report the influence of a talc-filled plastic shell layer on thermal stability and fire flammability of the core-shell structured wood high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites manufactured through coextrusion. The result showed that morphological analysis of the char layer after combustion confirmed the formation of a continuous surface char layer with talc addition in the composites, helping block fire penetration and enhance overall fire resistance of the composites. The shell thickness averaged …

Running Local: Gender Stereotyping And Female Candidates In Local Elections, Nichole M. Bauer Jan 2020

Running Local: Gender Stereotyping And Female Candidates In Local Elections, Nichole M. Bauer

Faculty Publications

An implicit assumption underlying the gender stereotyping literature is that female candidates have an advantage in local elections. Two factors motivate this assumption. First, some local issues, such as the provision of social services, fit into the stereotypic strengths of female politicians. Second, as the level of office increases, so too does the perceived masculinity of the office. Research on local policymaking, however, indicates that the tasks associated with local political offices, such as economic competition with other cites, require masculine rather than feminine qualities. I integrate research on local policymaking with the gender stereotyping literature to clarify the role …

Side Information Dependence As A Regularizer For Analyzing Human Brain Conditions Across Cognitive Experiments, Shuo Zhou, Wenwen Li, Christopher R. Cox, Haiping Lu Jan 2020

Side Information Dependence As A Regularizer For Analyzing Human Brain Conditions Across Cognitive Experiments, Shuo Zhou, Wenwen Li, Christopher R. Cox, Haiping Lu

Faculty Publications

The increasing of public neuroimaging datasets opens a door to analyzing homogeneous human brain conditions across datasets by transfer learning (TL). However, neuroimaging data are high-dimensional, noisy, and with small sample sizes. It is challenging to learn a robust model for data across different cognitive experiments and subjects. A recent TL approach minimizes domain dependence to learn common cross-domain features, via the Hilbert-Schmidt Independence Criterion (HSIC). Inspired by this approach and the multi-source TL theory, we propose a Side Information Dependence Regularization (SIDeR) learning framework for TL in brain condition decoding. Specifically, SIDeR simultaneously minimizes the empirical risk and the …

Are Individual Differences In Auditory Processing Related To Auditory Distraction By Irrelevant Sound? A Replication Study, Emily M. Elliott, John E. Marsh, Jenna Zeringue, Corey I. Mcgill

Faculty Publications

Irrelevant sounds can be very distracting, especially when trying to recall information according to its serial order. The irrelevant sound effect (ISE) has been studied in the literature for more than 40 years, yet many questions remain. One goal that has received little attention involves the discernment of a predictive factor, or individual difference characteristic, that would help to determine the size of the ISE. The current experiments were designed to replicate and extend prior work by Macken, Phelps, and Jones (Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, 16, 139–144, 2009), who demonstrated a significant predictive relationship between the size of the ISE …

Emerging Infectious Disease, The Household Built Environment Characteristics, And Urban Planning: Evidence On Avian Influenza In Vietnam, James H. Spencer, Melissa L. Finucane, Jefferson M. Fox, Sumeet Saksena, Nargis Sultana

Faculty Publications

Recent concerns with pandemic outbreaks of human disease and their origins in animal populations have ignited concerns regarding connections between Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) and development. As disasters, health, and infectious disease become part of planning concern (Matthew & McDonald, 2007), greater focus on household infrastructure and EID disease outbreaks among poultry is warranted. Following Spencer (2013), this study examines the relationship between the mix of household-scale water supplies, sanitation systems, and construction materials, and Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) among poultry in a developing country: Vietnam. Findings of our multivariate logistic regressions suggest that a non-linear, Kuznets-shaped urban transition …

Clinical Research Faculty Publications

Current dietary guidelines advocate more plant-based, sustainable diets on the basis of scientific evidence about diet-health relations but also to address environmental concerns. Here, we critically review the effects of plant-based diets on the prevalence of obesity and other health outcomes. Plant-based diets per se have limited efficacy for the prevention and treatment of obesity, but most have beneficial effects in terms of chronic disease risk. However, with the considerable possibilities of translating plant-based diets into various types of dietary patterns, our analysis suggests that potential adverse health effects should also be considered in relation to vulnerable groups of the …

Emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) are linked to global warming and adverse climate changes. Meeting the needs of the increasing number of people on the planet presents a challenge for reducing total GHG burden. A further challenge may be the size of the average person on the planet and the increasing number of people with excess body weight. We used data on GHG emissions from various sources and estimated that obesity is associated with ~20% greater GHG emissions compared with the normal-weight state. On a global scale, obesity contributes to an extra GHG emissions of ~49 megatons per year of …

Background/objectives: Excess gestational weight gain (GWG) is a risk factor for maternal postpartum weight retention and excessive neonatal adiposity, especially in women with overweight or obesity. Whether lifestyle interventions to reduce excess GWG also reduce 12-month maternal postpartum weight retention and infant weight-for-length z score is unknown. Randomized controlled trials from the LIFE-Moms consortium investigated lifestyle interventions that began in pregnancy and tested whether there was benefit through 12 months on maternal postpartum weight retention (i.e., the difference in weight from early pregnancy to 12 months) and infant-weight-for-length z scores. Subjects/methods: In LIFE-Moms, women (N = 1150; 14.1 weeks gestation …

This study compared the effect of a snack with ingredients to slow carbohydrate digestion (Test-snack) on postprandial blood glucose and insulin concentrations and subjective appetite ratings. We hypothesized that Test-snack would lower glucose and insulin responses and reduce appetite compared with a Control-snack. Overweight or obese subjects (n = 17) completed a randomized crossover study. Glucose, insulin, and appetite ratings were measured before consuming each snack or white bread (Bread) and over a period of 4 h. Subjects received Test-snack, Control-snack, or Bread in random order at least a week apart. The a priori primary outcome was the glucose response, …

Faculty Publications

Forty-five cultivars of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) were field-grown using best management practices at the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center (LSU AgCenter) Botanic Gardens in Baton Rouge during the Fall 2011 and Fall 2012 seasons. Recommended cultivars were selected for commercial production in Louisiana based on fresh weight and lettuce size (width and height). Nitrate (NO3– ) concentration was analyzed for each cultivar, as lettuces are known to accumulate and concentrate NO3–, and were then compared with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) oral reference dose (RfD—the EPA’s maximum acceptable oral dose of a toxic substance) of 1.6 mg NO3-nitrogen (N) …

Population and Public Health Science Faculty Publications

Objective. The aim of this study was to explore the association of 1,5-anhydroglucitol with acute C peptide response (ACPR) to arginine among patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods. Patients with type 2 diabetes were enrolled from the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital. ACPR was assessed using arginine stimulation test. Decreased β-cell function was defined as ACPR< 2.1. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to demonstrate the association between 1,5-anhydroglucitol and decreased β-cell function. Results. Finally, 623 patients with type 2 diabetes were enrolled into the analysis. Multivariable-adjusted odds ratios for decreased β-cell function across quartiles of 1,5-anhydroglucitol were 1.00, 0.47 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.23-0.99), 0.41 (95% CI 0.20-0.84), and 0.27 (95% CI 0.13-0.57) (Ptrend=0.042), respectively. When 1,5-anhydroglucitol was considered as a continuous variable after logarithm, the corresponding odds ratio was 0.40 (95% CI 0.23-0.71). Conclusions. We demonstrated a dose-response linear association between 1,5-anhydroglucitol and ACPR. 1,5-Anhydroglucitol was likely to be associated with β-cell function. Further analysis with large sample size and prospective study design is warranted to validate our findings.

Boxed In: Beliefs About The Compatibility And Likability Of Mother-Occupation And Father-Occupation Role Combinations, Mary C. Noonan, Freda B. Lynn, Mark H. Walker

Faculty Publications

Researchers have long noted that role expectations of a “good” mother conflict with those of a “good” worker, described as the “cultural contradiction” of motherhood. But given that work roles vary tremendously in terms of the cultural meanings the public assigns them, the authors examine variability in the perceived compatibility of mother-occupation and father-occupation combinations. Building on previous research, the authors hypothesize that (1) some parent-occupation pairings will be viewed as significantly less compatible because of incongruent expectations and meanings, and (2) incumbents of supposedly compatible parent-occupation pairings will be evaluated more favorably than incumbents of incompatible pairings. Both hypotheses …
